the fact that this soldiers intercepted ballot paper says a lot about last saturdays election
though the story is still unconfirmed, it is still a slap on our faces as nigerians.
i admit that things are elections are never 100% fair even in the more established democratic nations,
it is still quite when we hear electoral malpratice rated as high as 90% (my own analysis)

Politics › Troops Intercept A Truck-load Of Already Completed Ballots by viee(op): 12:31pm On Apr 20, 2007
ABUJA (Reuters) - Troops have intercepted a truck-load of already completed ballots the day before Nigeria's presidential election, the opposition said on Friday, heightening fears the vote will be rigged.

The accusation followed widespread abuses and violence in regional elections last week which handed the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) a landslide and prompted opposition parties to declare no confidence in the electoral commission.

"Soldiers in Kaduna have intercepted a truck-load of ballot papers, all already thumb-printed for the PDP ahead of Saturday's elections," said Lai Mohammed of the opposition Action Congress, adding that the ballots were being held at a barracks in the town of Kawo, in northern Kaduna state.

Spokesmen for the military and the electoral commission said they had no information.

The election is intended to mark a big step forward for democracy in Africa's most populous nation, ushering in the first handover from one elected president to another in a country scarred by three decades of military government.

But observers witnessed every form of rigging at the regional poll last Saturday, and said many of the results did not reflect the will of the people.

In a nationwide address on Friday, President Olusegun Obasanjo conceded the first election was flawed, but told aggrieved losers to seek redress through the legal system.

The former military ruler said there was no alternative to democracy, which returned to Nigeria in 1999.

"Let us continue to improve on the structure and the house rather than pull it down because it is leaking in part."

THEY ARE TWO VERSIONS OF THE STORY, HERE IS FROM LOCAL SOURCE:

Soldiers intercept truckload of ballot papers
By Segun Olatunji, Kaduna
Published: Friday, 20 Apr 2007
The One Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, on Thursday apprehended and detained a trailer alleged to be carrying ballot boxes and other electoral materials for Saturday‘s presidential and National Assembly elections.

Nigerian Soldiers

The vehicle, with registration number AA765 FKA, and about 20 passengers were still being held as at 8pm at the Army barracks in Kawo, on Zaria-Kaduna Expressway.

Attempts by journalists to move closer to the trailer to ascertain the goods were resisted by heavily armed military personnel detailed to guard it.

Also, efforts to get the comments of the Army authorities on the matter were rebuffed.

One Lt. J. Jang of the division‘s Public Relations Department only said that the matter was still being investigated.

He added that the General Officer Commanding the Division, Maj.-Gen. Lawrence Jokotola, had warned the personnel not to talk to the press on the matter.

However, from a few distance away from the trailer, it could be said that the vehicle was loaded with goods which looked like bags of grains and assorted foodstuffs.

Rumours were rife among the residents in the state capital that the intercepted trailer was conveying ballot papers and other electoral materials allegedly hidden under the bags of grains and foodstuffs.

But the Action Congress, in a statement on Thursday alleged that the seized ballot papers had been thumb-printed for the Peoples Democratic Party.

The party in the statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said, “We have said time and again that the PDP and its so-called leaders are bent on rigging themselves back to power.

“What further evidence does one need to confirm that statement?

“The thumb-printed ballot paper-filled truck that was intercepted in Kaduna is just a tip of the iceberg in the desperate scheming by the Presidency and the PDP, in collusion with INEC and the police, to rig Saturday’s poll as they willfully manipulated the state legislative and governorship elections.

“We have no confidence in the police or INEC to investigate and get to the bottom of the strange discovery in Kaduna, hence we will set in motion our own investigations and inform Nigerians accordingly.

“We have also set in motion our own machinery to expose the evil machination of the PDP, where such rears its head, before, during and after the forthcoming poll.”

Speaking on the allegation in Abuja on Thursday, INEC‘s National Commissioner in charge of Operations, Dr. Mohammed Jumare, said, “I am not aware of an incident like that. There is none of our trucks that left Abuja today for Kaduna or any part of the country for that matter. All our materials are already in the states.

”Today is Thursday. The materials will only leave for the local government areas on Friday. The claim that our truck was intercepted is a fabrication. The AC is only trying to create the impression that something is fishy in INEC.”

i always try to avoid getting into arguments or whatever u call this about religion,
i feel inclined to point out that the verses were you keep pointing out only refers to our state as humans

u keep talking about prophets who do this and that in the bible,
my brother let me ask you a simple question,
have ever gone contrary to the dictates of the quran?

it simply shows that you are human.

i dont know mushy about islam but i know a lot about christianity and i can say that it surely gurantees salvation since Almighty God is slow to anger and generous to forgiveness, it is not about how many times we fall but how many times we are able to stand!

as a christian i try hard to show love, which is the greatest commandment so i can have salvation.but it has not been easy since so pple will get on my nerves, so i still work hard to control myself.

i believe that the argument here should be how hard do you work towards attaining salvation.

we can openly argue about our faith but putting it into action is what really counts and in that particular sector we always falter.

if someone wants to convert me to islam ; which will never happen ( no offense intended, just me) i will refer to admire the person's relationship with the neighbours he/she can see.

how good it will be if we can actually put into action what we are so eager to preach!
this country would have been a far more better place. sad

i agree with you to some extent.also went to school in the eastern part of the country and i tell u , i can hold my head high anyway.

the decay in our education sector isn't an igbo thing, it a general problem in Nigeria.

However, i agree with you in terms of 'greed'; otherwise how can explain the ever high price for PMS?it is just sad, the tribe that feels the pain more is the igbo because we use it as an avenue to rub ourselves.how about transportation?especially during the festive season?disaster!the price of everything will skyrocate!

we do have our good sides.we are surely not the most underdeveloped, rather we are quite resourseful.the likes of Nnewi, Onitsha, Aba etc, are towns that grew out of community effort even with no so encouraging Government policies.

so nwanne, our good side far outweighs our bad side!

Politics › Re: Pat Utomi Did Not Withdraw From The Presidential Race by viee(f): 11:14am On Apr 17, 2007
i have always felt that Pat Utomi like Gani should not bother getting in voled in Naija politics. I feel that withdrawal is a smart move since they will certainly be no election come Saturday.

I'm sure baba OBJ would have taken Yaradua on a tour of Aso Rock for familiarization, what's the point?

it is really not up them to fight this shame in Nigeria because they can never win but if we can collectively fight the fight as Nigerians and stand for what we believe then pple like gani  and utomi can favorably contest.

i remember someone saying that we are the architect of our own misfourtune, looking at it from the point of view of the fact that we have less than 1% representing us. all we need to do is say enough is enough!

but in a situation where by the labour calls for strike and pple are protesting, the private sector is requesting to be left alone, the few influential pple are give millions that last just a year, Resistance is just impossible.

while i detest violence, i still know that any change i sorry to say must involve violence.

this days, peace demonstration always bring up the question; how peaceful?

it is all about revolution really.

for us in Naija any day / year / or hour we all decide to leave our homes sit down on our dirty streets in protest, things will never change, and of course the likes of iwu will always be there while the likes of Gani and Utomi will keep withdrawing

i fail to understand why this matter has degenerated to an Igbo thing.as a matter of i have had cause to visit so many cyber cafes during a research project and i can tell u authoritatively that Cyber crime isnt just an igbo thing but a nigerian thing. i met pple from diverse tribes doing excatly the same thing.
my friend that sponsored the research also own a cyber, had problem with EFFC for the same cause and was arrested.
while in jail, this same topic incidentally was raised, he pointed out that it is hardly a tribe thing.maybe a couple of years back u could say that the igbo started it (u say this based on the fact that they exhibited their wealth more than others therefore, u can identify them easily)
but today it has gone beyound igbo case,so many youths are looking for fast cash to join the 'big boys' and unfortunately cyber seem to offer that.
there i summit that this is not an igbo issue but a general cankerworm.

on another level, i have also had cause to sample peoples's opinion regarding this issue and i have also come to the conclusion that u must be a dupe to be duped.
How can someone tell u that u provide some cash for something so silly and earn almost triple the amount and u fall for it?
it is really a huge pity.
if i had a chance on Oprah, i will tell them that if we are making laws here to prosecute our guys down here they should also promugate a law for pple who actually send the cash xpecting thae same fast cash.

at the long wrong, i believe that igbo or no igbo, yoruba or no yourba, wasnt this what their fore fathers did to us?
they arrived with a bibile /quran in one hand and colonilism in the other.  thousands of years later we are still suffering from neo colonialism/imperialism.

while i dont supporu what is happening as it gives us bad image(more actually) sometimes i feel like saying it serves them right.

they have a choice; whether to send the money or not
during slave trade trade;our parents didnt have that choice

but brothers, revenge is not ours
especially when it is not even commesurate with the offence
theirs will take centuries ie if we ever get over it
ours may take years
it is not worth it cool
