More than 1.4 million birds were destroyed across Nigeria to stamp out bird influenza that hit poultry farms early this year, according to Mohammed Ahmed, the Executive Director, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom. Mr. Ahmed told the News Agency of Nigeria in Vom on Sunday that 18 states were affected by the flu whose last case was reported on May 28. He said 800 suspicions were diagnosed in the institute’s laboratory out of which 500 tested positive to the disease. The NVRI boss said that compensations for the destroyed birds were already being paid by the Federal Government. “Payment of compensation for the destroyed birds is already in progress; it started and stopped at a point, but it has resumed,” he said. He observed that the compensation was being handled by the Federal Government and appealed to the states to help by initiating steps to assist farmers. “Since it is the economies of the affected states that are being largely affected, the states should augment the compensation as they did during the first outbreak years ago. “The states should specifically help in the design of poultry farms to encourage bio-security of the farms,’’ he explained. Mr. Ahmed particularly warned against cluster farms, and blamed that trend for the large number of birds that had to be destroyed. The NVRI boss singled out Plateau and Kano as states with the largest concentration of cluster farms, and explained that the flu usually spread faster and engulf more birds in cluster farms. He expressed satisfaction that the flu was contained in few months compared to the first outbreak that lasted from 2006-2008, but observed that more birds were destroyed this time. “More birds had to go because the production of poultry has changed with the cluster farms. In Rantya, a village in Jos South Local Government, for instance, the cluster farms are so close and heavily concentrated in one vicinity,” he said. Mr. Ahmed said that the disease had subsided but “certainly not over yet’’. “We are not taking anything for granted and have therefore gone into active surveillance. “We have already trained people to take samples; their task is to buy and test chickens randomly from farms and live birds markets all over the nation. “We are virtually out of the passive, so we must go to look for possible cases. There are states and federal offices and officers to handle surveillance even in the remotest of the rural settlements. “Such surveillance is usually the most expensive part of disease control, but Nigeria is being supported by some interventions from the World Bank, FAO, USAID and other development partners.’’ Mr. Ahmed said that the Federal Government was also carrying out forensic investigation to ascertain how the disease came in. “We are forced to do that because what was diagnosed in NVRI laboratories is not related with previous cases, it is a new introduction all together,’’ explained. He said that there were many speculations with humans suspected to be possible carriers, while poultry importations could also be a source of disease dissemination. The official, however, expressed happiness that no human case had been found, saying that people tested, including farm workers, proved negative. The NVRI boss disclosed that another poultry disease, known as Newcastle disease, was being zeroed in for eradication by the international community through vaccinations like Thermostable and MDV12 that is usually targeted at poultry farmers in the hinterlands |

ABUJA—FORMER Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, who is currently facing trial in two courts for alleged fraud and loan conversion, was in a dejected mood yesterday following his week-long detention in the not-so-cosy EFCC custody. An EFCC operative, who would not like to be mentioned, told Vanguard that Bankole has obviously lost his cool after more than seven days in custody. He said: “The man has lost some of his ‘swag’ after all these days in almost solitary confinement. He appears dejected and frustrated at his condition. Everyone who is accustomed to living lavishly would feel the same way when those niceties are taken away, even if momentarily.” The operative noted, however, that the former number four man in the polity was not enjoying any preferential treatment from the operatives detailed to guard him, adding: “No; he is treated like any other suspect in our custody, though we make sure that he gets access to his lawyers and other people who matter to the case. Don’t forget that he is being held under orders from the court.” Those who have visited him say the former speaker is being detained in an underground cell at the EFCC headquarters with only a mat for him to sleep on.” He said: “Our cells are relatively new and well-kept. Don’t forget that they are the same cells that held other high profile suspects including former governors, former ministers and chief executives of banks, and I do not remember anyone of them coming back to say we treated them badly.” Bankole was arrested penultimate Sunday at his Asokoro residence after weeks of ‘hide and seek’ with operatives of the EFCC. |

MINISTERIAL LIST: Buhari Dumps Amaechi, Oronsaye As EFCC, DSS Screen Nominees By Admin • On July 12, 2015 • In Local News Local News 0 As President Muhammadu Buhari gets set to form his cabinet, indications are rife that immediate past governor of Rivers State and Director General of Buhari/Osinbajo campaign organisation, Rotimi Ameachi may not make the list of appointees. Also a favourite of Buhari’s new cabinet and former head of service, Steve Oronsaye is to be docked tomorrow at a federal high court. EFCC sources said that the former Rivers governor is currently under investigation over allegation of corruption and money laundering, following several petitions allegedly against him, Nigerian Pilot reports. A highly placed official of the commission said that the former governor might have lost out following President Buhari’s stand that those currently under probe and facing corruption charges will not make his cabinet. The President is under pressure from some eminent Nigerians, including a former President, to appoint ministers without further delay. According to the source, measures preparatory to receive Buhari’s nominees are already in place by the commission and Department of State Security Service, DSS, which are to screen all the nominees of the president before he will make a form all presentation to the Senate. The top official noted that Amaechi may not make the list because the commission started investigating him over allegation of fraud amounting to N30 billion in 2007 when he was the then speaker of the Rivers state House of Assembly. Apart from the alleged N30 billion fraud there are new pending petitions written against him as the governor of Rivers State which the commission is still investigating. The President had promised to constitute his cabinet by September, but eminent Nigerians, it was learnt, advised that any further delay would be counter-productive. It was gathered that anybody arrested, detained, quizzed, or arraigned by the EFCC may not make Buhari’s cabinet in line with his commitment to probity and transparency. It also gathered that the increasing numbers of arrest s and arraignments of some politically exposed persons by the EFCC and the delay in raising the Federal Executive Council may be a setback for such politicians and technocrats eyeing ministerial slots. Besides Amaechi, one of those who might be affected is the former Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, who is said to be in contention for a prominent job in the Buhari’s cabinet, but will be docked tomorrow (Monday) before a federal high court in Abuja over alleged N1.9 billion fraud. Oronsaye, who was arrested on Wednesday by the EFCC and might be prosecuted next week, is competing for the SGF slot with ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi, and Ogbonnaya Onu. It was learnt that Oronsaye is a favoured candidate of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Further checks revealed that in addition to Amaechi, there are also petitions against ex- Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso before the EFCC. The action is said to be a plot by some politicians to abort plans to make him a minister. Some forces and groups were said to have made a case for Kwankwaso as the next Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Similarly, others who may have difficulty in serving in Buhari’s government in any capacity are ex-governors Timipre Sylva, Murtala Nyako, Prince Abubakar Audu and Danjuma Goje. |
