Travel / 9 Party Members Died Going For Appeal Court Ruling On Governorship Election by vivianblog2(f): 2:42pm On Dec 11, 2015
No fewer than nine persons lost their lives in a road accident that occurred along the Abakaliki-Enugu highway in the early hours of Friday, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The accident occurred along Ezzangbo portion of the Abakaliki-Enugu highway and involved a Toyota Sienna bus and an articulated vehicle with registration number HKW 436 XA.

Mr Charles Abuochi, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi, confirmed the story in an interview with NAN.

He, however, said that the details of the auto crash were still sketchy.

There is an accident that happened along the Ezzangbo portion of the Abakaliki-Enugu Federal highway.

Our men are still at the scene of the crash to ensure free flow of traffic.

Preliminary report confirmed that nine persons died on the spot while one person sustained injuries and had been rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

Corpses of deceased victims have been deposited at the mortuary.’’

According to him, the accident victims were party supporters travelling to Enugu to observe the Appeal Court ruling on the Ebonyi Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

He said that the driver of the Sienna bus was moving on a high speed when he lost control of the wheel, skidded off his lane and crashed into the articulated vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

Abuochi expressed regret over the loss of many lives in the accident.

He said the FRSC was ready to make Christmas and New Year celebrations accident-free and warned motorists and other road users to obey road traffic laws.

We sympathise with the families of the deceased but I want to assure the general public that the FRSC is ready and prepared to ensure accident-free Yuletide.

We wish to advise that motorists and other road users should comply with safety standards to prevent the loss of lives and property of the passengers.

Our men have been fully mobilised and deployed to several accident flashpoints for proper surveillance,’’ he said. (NAN)

Politics / Court Adjourns Trial Of Ex-bank PHB, Spring Bank Mds TILL March 22 2016 by vivianblog2(f): 2:51pm On Dec 10, 2015
A Federal High Court in Lagos State, on Thursday, fixed March 22 for the commencement of trial of Francis Atuche, a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB.

Atuche is standing trial alongside Charles Ojo, a former Managing Director of the defunct Spring Bank Plc, on amended 45 charges of N125 billion fraud.

When the case was called for mention, Mr Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) announced his appearance for the prosecution.

Also, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN) and Mr Victor Obaro announced their appearances for Atuche and Ojo respectively.

The prosecution, thereafter, applied for a date for trial.

Justice Saliu Saidu, while adjourning the case, fixed March 22 and 23 for trial.

The accused were re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 20, 2014 before Justice Saidu following a re-assignment of the case.

They were first arraigned in 2009 before Justice Akinjide Ajakaiye.

Ajakaiye had granted them bail in the sum of N50 million each with two sureties each in like sum.

They were later re-arraigned before Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako on February 3, 2012 and subsequently, before Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia on January 16, 2013.

Both judges had adopted the bail terms granted by Ajakaiye.

In the charge, the accused were alleged to have granted credit facilities, manipulated shares and committed general banking fraud to the tune of N125 billion.

The offences contravened Section 7 (2) (b) of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act, 2004, and Section 15(1) of the Failed Banks (Recovery of Debts) and Financial Malpractices in Banks Act, 2004.

It also contravenes Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C 38, Laws of the Federation, 2004, as well as Section 14 (1) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2004.

Crime / Man Jumps Off Storey Building To Evade Court Trial (pictured) by vivianblog2(f): 4:09pm On Dec 08, 2015

There was drama at Ejigbo Magistrates’ court in Lagos State western Nigeria, on Tuesday after a 22-year-old man who was arrested and charged before the court did the unthinkable by jumping off the court’s storey building to evade trial.

The suspect, Tomiwa Bolaji, had already beat the court security guards and was attempting to escape through the adjoining street close to the court premises.

Both the court registrar, security guards and police officers present pursued him and later re-arrested him in the street and brought him back into the courtroom to face trial.

The incident caused tension at the court premises as the litigants present were apprehensive.
Tomiwa Bolaji was brought to the court and arraigned for allegedly stealing a generator set valued at N25,000 belonging to Moses Udeze.
The incident happened at 11, Adenekan Street where Udeze resides.

While he was escaping with the generator, he was caught by the residents and handed over to the police at Ejigbo Division.

At the station, Bolaji confessed that he actually stole the set to sell in order to raise money.
He was charged to court on a one count charge of stealing under the Criminal Code.

When he was arraigned, he pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr Ishaku Babaji urged the court to give a short date to enable him present fact and sentence.

Consequently, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs J. O. E. Adeyemi ordered him to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending the date for fact and sentence.

The matter was adjourned till 14 December for fact and sentence.

While the court officials were preparing for his remand papers, he suddenly got up and jumped off the court building before he was re-arrested and sent to prison.

Politics / Pay Our 5 Months Salary From Our Bailout Fund, COASU Tells Oshiomhole by vivianblog2(f): 3:43pm On Dec 08, 2015
Edo state workers under the aegis of Coalition of Unions of state owned Tertiary Institutions, (COASU), Monday protested to the Government House asking for immediate payment of 5 months backlog of salaries.

The aggrieved workers dressed in black attire were armed with spoons and bowls while others carried placards with anti-government inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions reads “Governor what happened to the bailout fund you collected on our behalf”, “Governor can you survive without 6months salaries? “bail us out, pay us our salaries among others.

The affected institutions are College of Education, Ekiadolor, College of Education, Igueben, ‎Edo state Polytechnic Usen and College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi.

Addressing newsmen on behalf ‎of the workers, President of the Unions, Comrade Fred Omonuwa also decried the decay of infrastructures in the affected institutions and vowed to sustain the protest until their demands are met.

He urged the state to settle the outstanding salaries of workers from the bail out fund received from the federal government meant for the purpose of paying workers salaries.

“Our people are been owned 5 months salaries, we all have children and families. The governor has gone to town that he is not owning and now they brought bail out from the federal government and they don’t want to bail us out”

“It is sad that they have politicised everything. When you ask for your right they will say you are ‎PDP. Our children must celebrate this Christmas”
