Some Bureau De Change operators on Thursday said that the requirements of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for sale of foreign exchange was affecting their sales.

They disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

They said that inability of customers to provide all the required data had been posing challenges in the sale of foreign exchange

An operator, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that many customers had discrepancies with the information on their international passports and the Biometric Verification Number (BVN).

He cited the problem of not having same information such as difference in date of birth on the two requirements.

The trader said that the extension of BVN to the sub sector as part of requirements for sale of foreign exchange was giving the BDCs some problems.

According to him, foreign exchange should be allowed to be sold without challenges.

He said that the policy had reduced the level of foreign exchange sold on weekly basis by the BDCs.

“Extending BVN to BDCs has brought problem to us. This is because we do not have the power to store people’s data like the bank.

“Commercial banks are deposit money institutions that are backed by Data Protection Act to store customers’ data.

“In our own case, customers are not willing to divulge personal information,” the trader said.

NAN reports that the requirement needed for purchase of forex before the BVN registration were international passports, travel tickets and valid visas.

The adoption of BVN as a condition for the sale of foreign exchange is expected to reduce the incidence of multiple purchases, round tripping and illicit transfer of funds.

It also facilitate enforcement of authorised limits of forex sales to end users, sanitize the retail segment of the market and engender policies that will facilitate better allocation of foreign exchange.

As part of the 100-city tour for The Future Awards Africa’s (TFAA) 10th anniversary, the awards visited conflict zones across the North of Nigeria last week – to highlight challenges,spotlight inspiring stories and set up hubs to solve problems at scale.The delegation was led by the co-founder of TFAA, Chude Jideonwo and visited Chibok, Mubi and Yola. The tour, led by project managers Bukonla Adebakin and Seun Oluyemi had previously visited Enugu, Banjul, Badagry, Ibadan, Akure, Port Harcourt and Kano.

The tour has a three-pronged focus: a) re-focus attention on the issues young people are facing across the continent, b) the case studies of how TFAA’s global brain trust has solved these issues and then c) set up hubs in each city - made up of past winners, nominees, partners and volunteers at community-levels – to solve these problems.“The stories and the people we have met on this trip have confirmed some of our worst fears, but more importantly also fired up our resolve,” said Jideonwo after the tour. “There is so much work we have to do, and we are building a network of problem solvers across the continent to engage, solve and sustain the solutions to these problems.
“We are celebrating 10 years of TFAA, but more importantly, we are fired up to begin 10 more years of building entrepreneurs,supporting change makers and transforming societies.”The one-year tour, which kicked off in October 2015, has now visited Kano, Banjul, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu, Abuja, Lagos, Yola, Mubi and Chibok.

“The challenges we saw on this tour are enough to make you worry,” said Mohamed Diaby, a member of the Central Working Committee, from Abidjan. “From young people feeling their own communities and countries to communicable diseases from recused individuals coming back into town, rebuilding of clinic/hospital, school, bridge and markets, education, employment, drug use, to cities that urgently demand government reconstruction, there is so much work left to be done. We are determined to lead an army of young people, through our hubs, to do this urgent work, to solve these problems.”

Hubs have now been set up in Mubi with the Initiative for Human Rights, Yola with Centre for Caring, Empowerment and Peace Initiative (CCEPI) and Chibok with the Red Cross. These hubs will work together with the Global TFAA Secretariat to pull resources and media attention to solve the identified problems in each community.
The next stop for the tour is Johannesburg, South Africa, after which phase one of the tour will conclude.

A five-year-old girl has accused five of her father’s colleagues of rape. The victim, it was learnt, was allegedly raped alongside her three-year-old sister.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims and their father, Ayodele Ekundayo, who is a driver at a cement factory, lived in the same compound with the suspects who all work in the same company.It was learnt that the company, which is located in the Fagba area of Lagos State, provided accommodation for its employees.

It was learnt that the suspects – John Mahansi, Taiye Ojo, aka Ejima, Deji Adenekan, aka Orobo and Peter Irobo, aka Apako, are between the ages of 24 and 33.

Speaking with our correspondent at the Lagos headquarters of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the father of the victims said he was disappointed when he found out that his colleagues raped his daughters.

He said since he had no wife, he usually left the little girls in the care of his colleagues.

Ekundayo said he discovered the alleged rape when his daughters started complaining about pains in their private parts.

He said, “Five days ago (on Thursday), my younger daughter ran to me and was shouting ‘pepper, pepper’ pointing to her private parts. She took off her pants and cried when I did not answer her. When I asked her who put pepper in it, she said it was Apako.

“I called her elder sister and she confessed to me and narrated all that happened. She said they (the suspects) threatened to kill them if they told me what was going on.

“Others did not talk when I approached them but Apako was shouting and threatening me when I challenged him. I am surprised they could do such a thing to my daughters. Those children are precious to me.

“At times, I take them with me to where we offload bags of cement when there is nobody to look after them. My older daughter told me that two drivers, Ejima and Orobo, used to touch her private parts while I was busy at work. I left my daughters with the security guards, Mahansi and Segun, whenever I was on night duty. I didn’t know that they were also defiling my daughters.”

The suspects, who were paraded by the NSCDC, however, denied the allegations.

The five-year-old victim, however, told PUNCH Metro that she was indeed raped by the suspects.

The victim, who gave graphic details of her encounter, said one of the suspects instructed her to put his private parts in her mouth.

She said, “Yes. Apako, John, Segun, Orobo and Ejima raped me. They put their ‘willy’ in my ‘bum-bum’ two times. They kissed me. It was only Apako that put his ‘willy’ in my sister’s ‘bum-bum.’”

A resident of Fagba, identified only as Dr. Solanke, was said to have informed a rights group, Ihuoma Girls Care and Support Initiative, about the incident and it later reported at the NSCDC command, leading to the suspects’ arrest on Monday.

The Lagos State NSCDC Commandant, Gabriel Abafi, said the victims were taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on Tuesday for medical examination and treatment, adding that the medical results were being awaited.

He, however, said that a preliminary check revealed that there were bruises in the minors’ private parts and urged members of the public not to hesitate to report such incidents to the command.

He said, “We have yet to know what the reason of the suspects was for defiling these little girls. We have just been to the hospital to ascertain the virginity of the victims. There are bruises in their private parts which is evidence that they were sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing.”

4 members of a family lost their lives today in a fatal accident along the Abakwa, Buruku local government area of Benue state. The accident involved an 18-seater commercial bus that collided with a motorcycle carrying the deceased persons which comprised of a man, his wife and two brothers. They all died on the spot, while a few passengers in the bus, including the driver, sustained serious injuries. The deceased were returning from the burial of a family member when they met their untimely death

After several days of extended interrogations, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will today arraign the former Benue State Governor, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, for money laundering and embezzlement.

The arraignment of Suswam, who ruled Benue State from 2007 to 2015, follows the filing of a nine-count charge largely bordering on money laundering to the tune of N3.1 billion against him at the Federal High Court Abuja on October 2.

Suswam and his former finance commissioner, Omodachi Okolobia were alleged to have diverted the proceeds of the sale of shares owned by the Benue State government and Benue Investment and Property Company Ltd.

The offence is punishable under section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 20111 as amended in 2012.

It will be recalled that in a bid to set the stage for the prosecution of Suswam, the commission grilled him and his former finance commissioner, Mr. Omadachi Oklobia, for many days last month but released them on administrative bail.

The two men, it was learned from their interrogators, were shown documents relating to the alleged crimes preferred against them and they were asked to defend themselves to enable the commission to determine their culpability or otherwise.

A source in the agency confirmed, last night, that the commission was convinced that the former governor and those who aided him to lauder the funds of the state must be charged to court.

The source said: “Barring any last minute hitch, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, will formally arraign the former governor of Benue State,Gabriel Suswam before an Abuja Court tomorrow, November 4, 2014.

“The anti-graft agency had on Monday, October 2, 2015 filed a nine-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N3.1 billion at a Federal High Court, Abuja.”

While Suswam is facing the trial by the EFCC, he had successfully stopped his probe by the state governor, Samuel Ortom, by securing the order of the Benue State High Court to restrain the commission of enquiry raised by the governor from investigating his tenure.

It is not clear if Suswam will also get the same court to restrain the EFCC from proceeding with his trial.
