Politics / Why I Stopped N250m Monthly Pay To Ex-militants - Gov Dickson by viviangist2: 8:35am On Feb 06, 2016
Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, yesterday, said he stopped the monthly payment of N250 million to militants on assumption of office to challenge the beneficiaries to work and earn a decent living and create equal opportunities for natives of the state to benefit from its resources.

He added that he had created an enabling environment for all to excel and achieve their set goals and would continue to explore ways and means of catering for the majority of the people.Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Dickson said he had to put an end to the illicit practice because he knew that it could not be sustained and that the beneficiaries were not entitled to such largesse.

According to him, the insecurity that was once the hallmark of the state was due largely to inadequate investment in human capital by past administrations, which bred “a teeming youth population without adequate education to earn a living in an economy requiring skills and knowledge.”

He added that some people who engaged in kidnapping were doing so purely out of criminality and that his administration had decided to be firm in its decision to stamp out all forms of criminality in the state.

The governor said it was in a determined bid to stamp out criminality and give hope to the people that his administration had decided to pay unprecedented attention to education and agriculture as a means of preparing the state for the post-oil era.

He said that his administration had commenced a massive investment in education with the award of various categories of scholarships from secondary school to doctorate level, revealing that the state had so far expended over N3.1 billion on the scheme.

No fewer than 789 indigenes of the state studying in 20 countries around the globe have benefitted from the programme with an unprecedented 137 PhD scholars pursuing their dreams in various universities in and outside Nigeria.

Politics / Abdullahi Abubakar: Best Governor In 2015 by viviangist2: 8:23am On Feb 06, 2016
Honour for Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar's sterling leadership qualities as he emerges Best Governor of the Year.

The Governor was yesterday ago pronounced as the Best Governor of the Year 2015 by the Political Observers Organization.

His Excellency'spenchant for transparency, accountability, people-oriented programmes in fulfilment of his campaign promises were some of the key considerations for the coveted award as stated by the national Chairman of the organisation, Comrade Umar Shariff.

The Chairman stated that the immediate past governor of Kano of Kano State, Engr. Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso won the best governor award twice. He declared that Governor MA Abubakar Esq is the Governor of Education, Governor of Health and Governor of infrastructure because of the amount of attention those 3 important sectors are receiving from Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.

Comrade Shariff said he went round the state independently and discreetly to asses the progress being made and found out that the government, despite the little they receive from the federation account, has put in place solid foundations for the development of the state some of which was the reconstruction of major roads in Bauchi town and one in Misau, free healthcare for women and children and the rebranding of Yankari game reserve.

At the end of his speech, the Chairman on behalf of the organization which has a representative from all the major political parties in Nigeria, termed Governor MA Abubakar as the 'Architect of Modern Bauchi.'

In his remarks, the Governor thanked Allah Almighty for blessing him and also thanked the leadership of the organization for deeming him fit for the award. He went on to thank his deputy, Engr Nuhu Gidado whom he said stood by him and they did it all together, he also thanked the leadership of the state Assembly and the entire members of the Assembly for supporting him and his government. Lastly he thanked the leadership of the APC under Alh. Ahmed Uba Nana for the party's indefatigable support.

His Excellency the governor took time to explain how he got the approval of the 4 billion naira loan from the speaker of the 7th Assembly and how he judiciously used the money in paying 4 months outstanding salaries, acquired more fertilizers and other projects. He also explained how he made sure the cost of rooms for the pilgrims of Bauchi was reduced from an outrageous sum of 3700SAR per room to 900SAR saving Bauchi government the sum of 2800SR (about 150,000 Naira per bed space). The governor attributed this to the prudence of his government.

The grand event which was held at the banquet hall of the Bauchi State government house was attended by dignitaries within and outside Bauchi.

Politics / Supreme Court Upholds Ikepazu ( Abia State ) Election by viviangist2: 10:10pm On Feb 03, 2016
The supreme court has upheld the election of Emmanuel Udom as governor of Akwa Ibom state. The apex court held that Udom’s appeal challenging the decision of the appeal court, which sacked him, was “meritorious.” The court affirmed the declaration of Udom as the winner of the April 11 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It said it would advance reasons for its decision on February 15. The Akwa Ibom state governorship election petition tribunal had ordered a rerun election in 18 local government areas of the state. But Umana Okon Umana, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), challenged the decision of the tribunal on that grounds that the April 11 governorship election in the state should have been cancelled, owing to wanton irregularities. In December 2015, the appeal court gave judgment in Umana’s favour, cancelling the entire election; and it directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a fresh one in the state within 90 days. But Udom went to the apex court to challenge the decision of the lower court. He asked the supreme court to set aside the judgments of the lower courts for being “perverse.” In the case of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu, governor of the state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the April 11 governorship election, challenged the judgment of the appeal court declaring Alex Otti, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), as winner of the poll. Ikpeazu, through his counsel, Wole Olanipekun, senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), asked the court overturn the judgment because the appeal court erred by declaring Otti winner in an election in which he scored a fewer votes than he did. Olanipekun argued that the APGA candidate should not take victory in an election he claimed was marred by corrupt practices. But Otti, through Akin Olujimi (SAN), prayed the court to strike out Ikpeazu’s appeal for lacking in merit. He argued that Otti won in 14 out of 17 local governments areas in Abia state before “some PDP people hijacked the election”. “I pray your lordships to dismiss the appeal; it has no merit,” he said. But the apex court upheld Ikpeazu’s election, stating that his appeal challenging the decision of the appeal court had merit and was allowed.

The "meet the people victory parade " was carnival-like as Rivers people sang popular Wike campaign songs as his motorcade drove by. Governor Wike who drove in an open roof Sports Utility Vehicle waived and shook hands with residents, thanking them via the use of a megaphone.

"I wholeheartedly thank the people of Rivers State for their votes, support and prayers all through this process. We are building a new Rivers State that will benefit all our people.

"You have played your part in this social contract. It is now my turn to continue to deliver. Politics / Buhari Reaffirms Commitment To Clean-up Of Ogoniland by viviangist2: 6:39pm On Jan 29, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Nairobi reaffirmed his administration's steadfast commitment to the implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programme's recommendations for the clean-up of Ogoniland and other parts of the Niger Delta which have been damaged by crude oil spillage.
In a statement by the President's Media Aide, Garba Shehu said;
Speaking during a visit to the United Nations Office in the Kenyan capital, President Buhari urged the United Nations to give more support for his administration's efforts to clean up the region.
"When I came into office on 29th May 2015, one of the first tasks I carried out was to authorise the implementation of the recommendations of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for the clean-up of Ogoni land.
"The devastation caused by oil spillage has destroyed many lives and livelihoods and is clearly one of the reasons why many people in that region lost faith in Government and resorted to the many criminal activities we are seeing in the region today.
"The action our government took to implement UNEP's recommendations has given the indigenes of the region hope that there are better days ahead.
"Let me, therefore, express appreciation on behalf of the Government of Nigeria to UNEP and other development partners for their cooperation and support on this very delicate matter and also request for their continued support as we implement the recommendations and transform the fortunes of the region," President Buhari said.
The President applauded the outcome of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that held in Paris in December last year.
"The commitments agreed in Paris will clearly benefit Nigeria and many African nations adversely impacted by climate change. We therefore look forward to their fulfilment and implementation.
"As the UN Office in Nairobi gears up to host the 2nd session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) this year under the auspices of UNEP, I would like to take this opportunity to further pledge Nigeria’s commitment to this very worthy cause of having a safe, secure and clean planet," he said.
President Buhari also said that with half of the world’s population now living in cities, world leaders must give greater attention to the challenges of rapid urbanisation.
"In our effort to promote the sustainable urbanization in Africa, the Federal Government of Nigeria funded and anchored the Africa Urban Agenda (AUA) programme in partnership with the UN-Habitat.
"The Programme aims to enhance engagements between state and non-state actors to build consensus around identified urban development priorities and amplify Africa’s voice at the global level towards HABITAT III.
"The Africa Urban Agenda will culminate in a major conference of African Ministers of Housing where numerous issues will be discussed.
"I am pleased to announce that this conference will be hosted by Nigeria in Abuja next month and I look forward to meeting and deliberating with you, and other stakeholders on this very important topic," the President said.
The Resident Coordinator of United Nations Office, Ms Sahle-Work Zewde said that the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in a free and fair election last year demonstrated the commitment of Nigerians to democracy as a system of government.
She described Nigeria as a "crucial member of the UN, a vital partner and a major contributor to UN peace-keeping operations."
Before leaving the United Nations Office, President Buhari undertook the symbolic planting of a tree, a tradition reserved for all visiting Heads of State and Government.
He also addressed the ongoing session of the "Mini-United Nations," an annual event that brings children from all of the world's regions together to draft, debate and pass resolutions on issues of current global interest.
