Politics / National Convention: PDP Will Emerge Stronger - Wike by viviangist2: 6:21pm On May 17, 2016
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has emerged stronger from the recent challenges because all leaders of the party are working to keep the party united.

The governor also said that he has lost confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, because the commission is too inconsistent, as it works to promote the interest of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State.

Speaking during his appearance on Channels Television Sunrise Daily on Tuesday broadcast from Port Harcourt , Governor Wike said that the party stakeholders have resolved their differences by placing the survival of the party above other considerations.

The governor said that the National Convention of the party will hold on May 21 as scheduled because shifting the convention will be dangerous as there would be no national working committee (NWC) after that date.

He said that the right processes have been followed and congresses held at different levels leading to the National Convention.

On the alleged court order stopping the National Convention, Governor Wike said as the Chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee, he has not been served any such order. He added that the said suit was filed on the premise of impersonation, hence the National Chairman has written to the court informing it of the fraud.

He said: "There is no valid court order stopping the PDP National Convention. The suit at the Federal High Court Lagos was filed by an impersonator. As a chairman of the National Convention Planning Committee, I have not been served any court order. How can there be an order when I did not go to court?

"At the point we are now, we want everybody to be together to form a united opposition in the interest of the nation . When a Presidential Candidate emerges from the north in 2018, the Chairman of the party will come from the South "

Speaking further, the governor said: "We will no longer allow the imposition of candidates. We are encouraging every candidate to contest elections and emerge through popular votes. We will not allow impunity or imposition .

"I don't have confidence in the present INEC. It is too inconsistent and acts outside the law"

The governor explained that in Rivers State, the APC has used INEC to generate tension by attempting to manipulate the electoral process for 8 local government areas where INEC had already cancelled elections during the March 19, 2015 rerun elections in the State.

He said that it was unfortunate that INEC has set a committee to review already cancelled elections which will lead to avoidable crisis.

Governor Wike recalled that the APC after the March 19 rerun elections issued statements calling for the cancellation of the elections, but pointed out that the same APC has made a u-turn by approaching the election tribunal to declare her candidates winners. He regretted that INEC has tacitly supported APC by refusing to file defence for the declared results at the election tribunals.

He said the rerun elections in Rivers State has proved that money cannot win elections as the ruling party had access to loads of money which made no impact.

Commenting on Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Wike said the former President was no longer in active politics as he plays advisory role.

He said with the situation on ground in Edo State, the PDP will win over the state.

"From what we have seen on ground in Edo State, this is the best time to capture the state. We have sent independent assessors to the state and they have adjudged that the PDP has the opportunity to take over Edo", he said.

While he maintained that the PDP is in the process of being rebuilt, the governor said that the party can no longer have one mega financier.

He said: "The party cannot have one person to be the sole financiers. There is no need allowing the party to be in the hands of the money bags. We have handed over the party to the people "

On leadership in Rivers State , the governor said there is no godfather or god-mother in the state in the state as all stakeholders are important to the development of the state.

He noted that godfatherism is detrimental to the development of any state, hence it will never be encouraged.

The governor said that since he became governor, he has judiciously used scarce Federation allocation resources which hovers between N4b to N5b to pay salaries and projects, while the immediate past administration left a backlog of salaries and abandoned projects.

He added that his administration will work with the Federal Government to clean up Ogoni land, if the the Federal Government involves it. He warned against the politicisation of the Ogoni land.

Politics / Ebelechukwu Obiano And Abandoned Baby In Anambra - Touching Story With Photos by viviangist2: 5:49am On Mar 25, 2016
Baby Moses is Easter Gift to Anambra – Mrs. Obiano

The wife of the governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano has described “Baby Moses” who was abandoned at a rubbish dump at Nibo in Awka South Local Government and later rescued as a perfect Easter gift to Ndi Anambra. The wife of the governor stated this during a visit to ascertain the health status of little Baby Moses Thursday at Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, Anambra State.
Mrs. Obiano who disclosed that Baby Moses is the third abandoned baby rescued under the two-year old administration of Governor Obiano, her husband, assured that she would take full responsibility for the care and upkeep of the baby like the previous ones through her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ). Said she: “As the mother of six million Ndi Anambra, it is my responsibility to care and nurture the baby who may eventually turn-out to be governor of the state in future.”
On what may have induced a mother to abandon her child, Mrs. Obiano said that no one knows. According to her, “On one hand I condemn the act of abandoning the baby but in another breath, I want to commend her for wrapping the baby well and ensuring that he did not suffocate. Perhaps, she heeded my previous plea for mothers with unwanted babies to keep them where they can be seen and taken care of. They can drop them near Governor’s Lodge, Fire station or a hospital.”
Mrs. Obiano who expressed happiness that the baby she saw is healthy and well-taken care of by the Teaching Hospital, praised the professionalism of the Doctors, Nurses and management for sparing no effort and material in their response to ensure the survival of Baby Moses.
Also in the spirit of Easter, Mrs. Obiano stated that like every Anambra woman she is ready to help and ensure that Baby Moses and every other baby grow up healthy because they have a right to life. She also called on Anambra women to imbibe the Biblical injunction to “love your neighbor as yourself,” and “Be our brothers and sisters keeper,“ by always looking out to help those in need around us especially in the present harsh economic condition of the country.
Earlier, Chief Medical Director, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor, said that they received Baby Moses in critical condition from agile State Sweepers but thanked God that he is responding to treatment. He revealed that the baby, who weighs 1.25 kilogram, will remain in the incubator for two weeks when they expect that the weight would improve to 1.8kg.
Dr. Ikeakor commended the wife of the governor for her caring nature and visit to the hospital, as well as the Anambra State Government for providing the equipment necessary for treatment of cases like that of Baby Moses and others which according to him; “is assisting us in the effective discharge of our duties.”

Education / Record Breaker Daniel Ayodele Dada Has Been Honoured By House Of Reps by viviangist2: 10:15pm On Mar 23, 2016
Ayodele Daniel Dada, the 29-year-old Psychology graduate from the University of Lagos, who had an outstanding 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA), has been honoured by the Nigerian House of Representatives. The parliament awarded him the rare privilege of admittance to its plenary session.

While commending the scholar, sponsor of the motion, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the act was a dream come true which should be shown to other Nigerians, while stating that the federal government needed to tap into Dada’s potential. It is possible that Gbajabiamila sponsored the motion as a result of the activism several young Nigerians undertook on social media platform, Twitter, saying the young man deserved a national honour or an endorsement deal as an ambassador of the country’s failing education sector.

One of the major challenges millennials currently face is an ‘information overload’ as well as often being accused of only addressing everyday issues through social media platforms. However, this has shown it does not matter that young people are constantly mocked for having no real influence over society as social media awareness has helped tremendously in this case.

The House of Representatives’ recognition may be the starting point for proper integration of the country’s scholars into positions of note in Nigeria. This is a major issue as many reputable Nigerian experts have been adopted by western countries while the country languishes in a myriad of socio-economic problems that could easily be solved by these people.

Dada was encouraged by several lawmakers to live a life worthy of emulation as well as being a role model to younger Nigerians.

Although there was no monetary reward (which is something many Nigerians were expecting for Dada), the invite by the House of Representatives could be the much needed jump start he needs to begin making a positive impact in the country.

Why we honour Gov. Sani Bello - VC Imo State University

The Vice Chancellor Imo State University, Owerri, Professor (Mrs.) Victoria Adaoni Obasi at the weekend said the nationalism and patriotism spirit of Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello earned the award of institution's Honorary Doctor of Business Administration.

The university administrator stated this at the weekend during the grand finale of the 7th Convocation ceremony of the institution in Owerri.

Prof. Obasi noted that the decision of the Senate of the university to honour the Niger State governor came after rigorous search and assessment of his antecedents, which placed him far above his peers.

According to the Vice Chancellor, "The selection by the Senate of this University and the award of Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) on Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor of Niger State was in recognition of his zeal for a united Nigeria and patriotism. He is a nationalist who strongly believe in the Nigerian Project.

"As a reputable businessman, investor and employer of labour, our awardee has given employment to many Nigerian youth. He has through this singular act help to reduce unemployment and curtail youth restiveness. This act placed him ahead of his peers.

"Imo State University found in Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello a perfect gentleman of vision, a man of drive and discipline, a multi-talented industrialist, an ebullient man of action, and a motivator and mobiliser of people and resources, hence the award of the Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa)".

Justifying the award, the Visitor of the institution and governor of Imo State, Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha said Governor Sani Bello is an highly detribalised leader and bridge builder.

"I salute the decision of the Senate and management of Imo State University, Owerri for awarding Governor Abubakar Sani Bello with an honorary doctorate degree, it is a well deserving one. The awardee has indeed distinguished himself as a nationalist and a detribalised leader".

Education / Sokoto To Pay Parents N5,000 Monthly For Sending Their Daughters To School by viviangist2: 6:43pm On Mar 22, 2016
Sokoto Govt, UNICEF Train 830 ‘Role Model’ Female Teachers

Sokoto government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), is training 830 female teachers in a pioneer scheme to provide enough role models for female students, especially in rural communities in different parts of the state.

The Female Train the Trainee scheme is being executed under UNICEF’s Girls Education Project (GEP3). It’s main aim is to train female teachers from rural areas who would in turn go back to their communities and teach.

Giving an insight into the project when she led a team on a sensitisation visit to the wife of the state Governor, Hajiya Mariya Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a Consultant overseeing the implementation of the project, Maryam Usman Na’ibi, said the GEP3 project also aims to get out of school rural children back to school without further delay.

“We have discovered that among the reasons behind girls dropping out of school children are poverty, religious misconception, ignorance, cultural beliefs and insecurity. Parents are afraid of sending their girl children to school because of fear that they may be molested by male teachers.

“So in order to reassure communities holding such misconceptions, we decided to train female teachers from among themselves who will in turn take the lead in teaching children from their localities,” she added.

Naibi said in order to take care of poverty issues, the Sokoto state government and UNICEF introduced a cash transfer programme where mothers or care givers get 5000 Naira monthly for sending a girl child to school to assist them buy books and other things for the girls.

In addition to the payment to mothers and care givers, the trainee female teachers also get paid to aid their education while at the end of their studies, they are absorbed into the state civil service as teachers in their localities.

So far, the GEP3 is implemented in six local government areas namely Binji, Bodinga, Gudu, Goronyo, Kebbe and Wurno.

Politics / Rivers Rerun : We Have Videos Of Atrocities Committed By The Military - Wike by viviangist2: 8:28pm On Mar 21, 2016
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the state government has compiled videos of the atrocities committed by the military across the state during the rerun elections, saying that the videos will be released to the public at the appropriate time.
The governor also stated that with the declaration of results by returning officers in the respective constituencies, no INEC official is empowered by law to cancel or nullify such results.
.
He said that the military orchestrated violence in the state could be part of a plot by the APC to declare a state of emergency on the state on the premise of heightened propaganda.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, Governor Wike said : "We have videos of the atrocities committed by the military across Rivers State. We shall release them at the appropriate time.
"There is an attempt to cause violence to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. "
He noted that the statement by the National Secretariat of the PDP that the Federal Government plans a state of emergency in the state should not be disregarded as there is always an element of truth to every rumour.
According to him, the APC is merely involved in propaganda to create the impression of violence.
On the further rerun in eight local government areas, Governor Wike said measures should be taken by INEC to address the challenges noticed during the March 19 elections.
He suggested that one Resident Electoral Commissioner should be assigned to one local government area for greater efficiency in the conduct of the polls.
The governor said that the PDP won the elections in the declared constituencies because Rivers State is purely a PDP state.
"While we campaigned, they were not campaigning .With what I have done in a few months , it will be difficult to defeat PDP in the state," he stated.
On the failed attempt by the Defeated Rivers State APC Governorship Candidate, Dakuku Peterside to hijack result spreadsheet from Ikwere /Emohua Federal Constituency in Isiokpo on Sunday , Governor Wike said it was unfortunate that the APC used the media to lie that the APC chieftain escaped assassination attempt. He said the falsehood was possible because APC controls the management of majority of the media.
The governor explained that Rivers State since the 1970s has always been a one -party state, but noted that in 2015, an opposition party arose for the first time.
"Now, we have a strong opposition for the first time. It is a healthy development ", he said.

Simeon Nwakaudu,
Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

Politics / Rivers Rerun: Corps Member's Experience As INEC Worker by viviangist2: 8:03pm On Mar 20, 2016
MY EXPERIENCE AS APO 1 IN UNIT 6, WARD 4, OF EMOHUA LGA, IN RIVERS STATE SENATORIAL, STATE HOUSE OF REP AND NATIONAL HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY RE-RUN ELECTION ON 19/03/2016

I have been hearing that hudlums do snatch election materials from INEC officials during voting process until 19th March, 2016 when election materials were snatched in my polling unit where am acting as the Assistant Prisiding Officer 1(APO 1).
When we first arrived our RAC(Registration Area Center) on 18/03/2016, many people who are not INEC ad hoc staffs were seen hovering around the RAC. After collecting election material from our SPOs(Supervising Presiding Officers) at around 6:00AM, we set out to our various polling units after much delay. The buses that were conveying us to our various polling units were just crawling. Peole that are to work at different polling units were to move together accompanied by soldiers, SARS and police officers.
The crawling way of movement made us(my team-PO, APO 1, APO 11 and three police officers) to arrive our polling unit at around 3:20PM. We were the last people to reach their polling unit in our ward. The card reader failed after trying all the 10 fingers of the first person that came to vote. As the second person showed up for accreditation, a group of huddlums entered our polling unit from unknown where and made away with some of our election materials except our card reader(with me), ballot paper and election result(with the APO 11) . We all ran away including the 3 police men that were working with us. There was a pandemonium in the unit.
After the noises subsided, we re-converged at one place to discuss on how to move back to the LGA, since all the people that we called to come for our rescue who actually picked the call did not give us quick attention and there is only one road leading to the place except through water. One of the party agents among the two main party in Nigeria, who told us that the election materials were snatched by the other party member, offered to help us move out of the village. After much contemplation on whether we are save to move out of the village at that time or not, we agreed to move since we believed that the huddlums might come back to harm us or carry the remaining election materials. One of the villagers offered his car too. So, the police men entered the bus that conveyed us to the place and the rest of us with 2 of the villagers(the party agent and one other village boy) and the owner of the car left for the LGA.
On our way to the LGA, the party agent that were with us said that we have to pass through his party senetorial candidate to confess that it is other party member that snatched the materials from us. That was when we began to fill unconfortable with them. Then, th APO 11 insisted to board a car to Choba against the wish of the party agent and ours too. By then, we have lost the police men on the way from the community. The driver called me separately and asked me whether we and the party agent did not discuss anything? Which I sincerely replied that we did not discuss anything. On my own, I have decided not to meet or talk with the politician because some of them are heartless. After seeing how the guy was serious about taking us especially the woman(APO 11 who was with the result sheets and ballot paper) to the politician, the PO knelt down and begged the woman to give them the ballot paper and the election result sheets that she was carrying.
I left the scene with my phone on my ear as if i was making call. After I have given them about 300m gap to the LGA, I saw my PO running towards my direction. I asked him " what happened?" And he told me that the APO 11 has been tied and thrown into a Honda accord. Then, we ran together to the LGA. We saw many other corpers too who were complaining of the same snatch experience in their polling unit too. This is just the summary of what happened.
Please, thank God with me for this is my true life story. I am a serving corp member in Emohua LGA of Rivers state
