Several houses have reportedly been burnt, and many injured in a communal clash between Urum and Achala communities in the Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday. The PUNCH gathered that residents have deserted the two communities as a result of the clash. A leader in Urum who spoke with our correspondent but pleaded not to be mentioned blamed the state government for treating the people of Achalla with a kid’s gloves on the matter. He said, “Each time these people ( Achalla) will attack us and destroy our houses and the state government will not do anything about it. “Is government waiting until when we are wiped out before it will intervene?” https://punchng.com/houses-burnt-many-injured-as-anambra-communities-clash/ |

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has barred the Edo Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party from going on with its governorship primary election scheduled for Thursday, 25th June, 2020. This was following a suit brought before the court on Monday by one of the governorship aspirants of the PDP, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who had vowed not to step down for Governor Godwin Obaseki. Hon. Justice E.A Obile, who granted the experts order, allowed the defendant to serve the parties in the suit through substituted means, in two national dailies and adjourned till 24th June, for hearing of the summon. Facebook Inc. has removed a series of ads and posts shared by U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign for violating the company’s policy against “organized hate.” The ads, which referred to “Dangerous MOBS of far-left groups,” included an image of an upside-down red triangle. “Nazis used red triangles to identify their political victims in concentration camps,” according to a tweet from Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive officer of the Anti-Defamation League. “@POTUS’ campaign needs to learn its history, as ignorance is no excuse for using Nazi-related symbols,” he added. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed that a handful of ads and posts had been removed. “We removed these posts and ads for violating our policy against organized hate,” the spokesperson said. “Our policy prohibits using a banned hate group’s symbol to identify political prisoners without the context that condemns or discusses the symbol.” Facebook has been criticized for letting political candidates lie in their ads, but has taken a stand before against ads that violate other policies. In March, Facebook removed a series of ads from the Trump campaign for encouraging people to take the census, but including a link to a re-election campaign survey instead. Facebook said the ads were removed to “prevent confusion.” “The inverted red triangle is a symbol used by Antifa, so it was included in an ad about Antifa,” said Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s director of communications. “We would note that Facebook still has an inverted red triangle emoji in use, which looks exactly the same, so it’s curious that they would target only this ad. The image is also not included in the Anti-Defamation League’s database of symbols of hate.” https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-06-18/facebook-removes-trump-campaign-ad-for-organized-hate?__twitter_impression=true |
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has left his supporters in confusion, by denying leaving the All Progressives Congress. Obaseki had in a pinned tweet on his profile on Tuesday said: ” I have officially resigned my membership of the All Progressives Congress (@OfficialAPCNg) after meeting with the CoS to @MBuhari. We shall continue the battle to protect the interest of Edo people and sustain good governance in the state.” Within hours, his deputy, Philip Shaibu, officially moved from APC. However, Obaseki on Wednesday morning made a U-turn, which appears to have been influenced by Tuesday’s sacking of his chief tormentor and erstwhile godfather, Adams Oshiomhole, by the Court of Appeal, Abuja as APC national chairman. He said: “I have not moved to a new platform yet to seek re-election. My focus now is to control the spread of the coronavirus (#COVID19) pandemic, which is ravaging our country and threatening our healthcare system. Stay safe.” https://metrostarng.com/2020/06/17/confusion-as-obaseki-denies-quitting-apc/ |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its resolve to probe into the genuineness of relevant documents including the educational certificates of Governor Godwin Obaseki and five others for the Party’s June 22, 2020, Primary Election to elect the Party’s Edo state governorship candidate. The six aspirants who have bought, completed and submitted the Party’s expression of interest and nomination forms are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, H.E. Godwin Obaseki, Rt. Hon. Dr Pius Odubu, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Hon. Osaro Obazee and Hon. Matthew Aigbuhuenze Iduoriyekemwen. APC in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu explained that the decision was aimed at ensuring due diligence and transparency in the screening exercise. Apparently referring to the circumstances surrounding the nullification of its victory in the Bayelsa governorship poll, the party explained that the measure was due to its “recent shocking experiences, and to avoid any lapses in the process.” It noted: “Therefore, we are making the submitted information and documents of the governorship aspirants available to our party members and the public for verification of claims and to support the screening panel with information or any objection to the claims contained in the submission by the aspirants. ‘Consequently, the various submissions will be displayed at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja and in Benin City, the Edo State capital from Monday 8th to Tuesday 9th June 2020 for claims and objections. “We are inviting party members and indeed members of the public to assist the screening committee by scrutinizing the information, credentials and documents provided by the governorship aspirants and availing the Screening Committee of counter and correct information, if applicable.” Recall that in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, APC had earlier released its time table and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2020 Governorship Primary Elections in Edo States. Accordingly, sales of nomination and expression of interest forms began at the APC National Secretariat from Wednesday 20th May to Tuesday 2nd June 2020. The last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents was Wednesday 3rd June 2020. As earlier stated, the publication of claims and objections will be from Monday 8th to Tuesday 9th June 2020. Screening of aspirants has been slated for Wednesday 10th to Thursday 11th June 2020. This will be followed by Screening Appeal which will hold on Friday 12th June 2020. The Primary Election will hold on Monday 22nd June 2020, while Election Appeal has been slated for Wednesday 24th June 2020. https://guardian.ng/politics/edo-guber-poll-apc-probes-certificates-of-obaseki-five-other-aspirants/ |

Three persons were reportedly killed on Friday in a land feud between Urum and Achalla communities in the Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State. This was the second time the two communities unleashed hostilities on themselves this week. The first attack was on Wednesday. The two communities, our correspondent gathered, had disputed a parcel of land on their boundary for years. The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Emmanuel Nweke, confirmed the incident. He said, “It’s like a war, with repeated shootings and invasion of our land by our neighbours. He said many members of his community had fled the place for other areas for fear of being harmed, adding, “who will like to stay seeing death staring him or her in the face.” Speaking, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Haruna, said the command had not been briefed on the number of casualties. He said the command had deployed policemen in the area to avoid more destruction and killings. Mohammed added, “The command has dispatched joint police team comprising PMF/SARS and other conventional units led by the Area Commander, Awka, Yemi Ajayi. “Situation was brought under control, while the joint patrol is still ongoing to restore normalcy in the affected areas. “Extent of damage and injuries sustained have not yet been ascertained.” He said the CP had directed the State CID to carry out a discreet investigation in order to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident and bring perpetrators to book. Our correspondent gathered that the Commissioner of Police in the state, John Abang, had held a meeting with the leaders of the communities last week where he enjoined the feuding parties to explore legal options to resolve their differences. https://punchng.com/residents-flee-as-anambra-communities-clash-over-land-ownership/ |

Canadian authorities have commenced efforts to execute a corresponding arrest warrant issued for a Nigerian businessman accused of fraud in the United States. Allen Onyema, chairman of Air Peace Limited in Nigeria, is facing multiple charges of money laundering and bank fraud in excess of $20 million. A United States grand jury recently indicted Mr Onyema and Ejiroghene Eghagha, Air Peace’s head of finance and administration. Both suspects denied the allegations in a statement Saturday and indicated their determination to fight the charges in court. Although Messrs Onyema and Eghagha are currently believed to be in Nigeria, judges in the U.S. have been issuing warrants for their arrest, according to court filings seen by PREMIUM TIMES. On September 5, Russell Vineyard, a magistrate at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, issued a corresponding warrant of arrest for Messrs Onyema and Eghagha in Canada. American prosecutors had sought the warrant to enable Canadian law enforcement authorities take the suspects into custody if sighted in their jurisdiction. As part of a longstanding tradition on cross-border crimes, American authorities have briefed their Canadian counterparts about their case against the two Nigerians, documents said. Similarly, on November 19, Justin Anand, a magistrate at the same district, issued a separate warrant against Messrs Onyema and Eghagha for their arrest in the United States, especially by the U.S. Marshals Service. Although the major aspects of the alleged fraud were committed in the U.S., some of the bank accounts used in some of the suspicious transactions were domiciled in Canada. The U.S. and Nigeria have an extradition agreement. Several Nigerians have been extradited to the U.S. to face criminal charges, but no high-profile citizen of Mr Onyema’s standing has ever been handed over. Buruji Kashamu, a Nigerian politician, has spent decades fighting his extradition to the U.S. on drugs charges, using Nigerian courts to frustrate the process. He was elected into the Nigerian Senate in 2015 and served a full four-year term despite several outstanding court warrants, including appellate court rulings in Nigeria and in America, for his extradition. It was unclear whether American authorities have filed extradition requests for Messrs Onyema and Eghagha based on the court warrants. A spokesperson for the Nigerian attorney-general’s office did not immediately return requests for comments Saturday afternoon. American prosecutors said the two connived to launder funds and defraud American banks with falsified letters of credit for aircraft and equipment purchases. The indictment leveled serious charges of money laundering and foreign exchange fraud against the individuals. Already, several companies which the U.S. authorities alleged Mr Onyema set up to carry out fraudulent transactions between Nigerian and American banks have had their bank accounts frozen. At least $14.2 million (N5 billion) had been confiscated in three bank accounts run by Mr Onyema’s companies in the U.S. and Canada. A final forfeiture of the funds is being pursued as part of the charges against the airline executives. Mr Onyema did not return PREMIUM TIMES’ calls and text messages seeking his comments about the arrest warrants and funds seizures. In an earlier statement Saturday, Mr Onyema denied the charges and said he was ready to defend his “innocence”. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/364889-air-peace-boss-onyema-wanted-in-canada-for-alleged-multimillion-dollar-fraud-in-u-s.html
