Pastor Ashimolowo’s church under investigation over alleged fraud in UK

The police in London, United Kingdom has kicked off fraud investigations into alleged mismanagement of finances at Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), the church of popular Nigerian pastor Matthew Ashimolowo.


The UK Guardian reports that the criminal investigation by the City of London police followed a report of the Charity Commission which found KICC lost most of £5m invested by the former Charlton footballer Richard Rufus, a Ponzi scheme operator.

“Detectives from City of London police’s fraud teams are investigating,” an unnamed police spokesman confirmed, although no arrests have been made.

The Guardian reports that Charity Commission accused the church’s former trustees who invested in Rufus’ Ponzi scheme of “not exercise(ing) sufficient care” when they gave Rufus the church’s money.

The Commission said they failed to check if Rufus had any investment qualifications or experience and gave little thought to the extraordinarily high rate of return the former Premier League footballer was promising yet concluded that his “personal guarantee makes this as safe an investment as any”.

The church’s chief operating officer James McGlashan said that Pastor Ashimolowo knew about the investment with Rufus but denied his being any part of the decision to invest the money as he was not a trustee of the KICC.

The United Kingdom is proposing to amend its border control system to give preference to citizens from 52 Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria.


According to 45 members of the UK parliament, Commonwealth countries may get fast-tracked visas to the UK after Brexit, if the proposal sails through.

According to UK Telegraph, the suggestion was made in a letter addressed to Amber Rudd, Home Secretary. The letter said Commonwealth stood with Britain when it faced “existential threats,” but that UK had left its allies in the cold as it “pivoted to Europe.”

The letter read: “I am writing to urge you to extend the hand of friendship to our Commonwealth partners. In the previous century, Commonwealth countries stood with Britain as we faced existential threats from abroad but as we pivoted to Europe, increasingly, our Commonwealth allies were left in the cold. “The lack of consideration for Commonwealth citizens is at its starkest at our border.

While EU citizens are collecting their luggage or exchanging greetings with loved ones, our Commonwealth friends wait tirelessly in the ‘All other passports’ queue.”

A Nigerian, Okonkwo M. Tony, has been arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi, India, for alleged drug trafficking.


Tony, upon his arrest by Narcotics Control Bureau sleuths had swallowed 90 capsules of cocaine.

The drugs were found in his stomach during a routine search.

Tony was apprehended after he landed at the airport from Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa and had been admitted to a hospital by the sleuths of the Delhi Zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau.

A joint commissioner, crime, Ravindra Yadav, told The Hindu the suspect ejected 90 cocaine-filled capsules weighing 1.3kg in two days.


According to him, Tony had initially misled the sleuths saying he had come to India for business purpose while carrying a tourist visa.

“He was admitted to a hospital and after medical intervention he ejected the drug-filled capsules.

“He told investigators that he had swallowed these at a guest house in Lagos and then reached Addis Ababa via Lome (Togo).

“He was apprehended as soon as he landed here from the Ethiopian capital.

“Tony was supposed to hand over the drug capsules to another Nigerian national here, whom the agency has been trailing.

“Tony has been arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

“This is the fourth case of seizure of cocaine by the NCB in Delhi in the last one month.



“The method of smuggling after swallowing the drug is not easy to detect as it is hard to identify any concealment inside the body,” Yadav said.

Makinwa was alleged to have signed a legal separation agreement in July 2014,. The letter said it was well documented that Makinwa and Ayida had agreed to separate by July 2014, which the book failed to record. .

Pinheiro LP said it was untrue that Maje had given her an “STI." The law firm further noted that the publication has brought “public ridicule” on Maje.” According to the law firm, Makinwa’s representation of Ayida in the book was “not a true reflection of who he is.” .

Ayida, through his lawyers, has, among other things, informed Makinwa to retrieve the already-sold books and stop all forms of distribution and deliver up same at the place to be agreed upon by our client for destruction.”

It further said a failure to do so and tender a full page unreserved apology to Ayida in three national dailies “will result in the commencement of legal action.” She was given 7 days upon receipt of the letter to comply with the demands or they’d be forced to seek legal redress. The letter was sent last year, but it's not sure if Makinwa got it.

He was accused of collecting the said certificates from its original owner under the pretence of helping him to secure a job in a popular oil company based in Ilorin, Kwara state. .

It was further revealed that the suspect has practiced as a legal practitioner and appeared in several matters in all levels of Nigerian Courts up to Supreme Court. He was eventually arrested while hiding inside the roof of his house.
