Music/RadioThe Top Nigerian Albums Of 2013 by vosquare(op): 6:48pm On Dec 28, 2013
2013 was an exciting year for Nigerian music, from great songs to new faces to new endorsements, to the exhilarating shows, not forgetting the numerous songs NBC banned.

A lot of albums were released, some highly anticipated(Tiwa Savage’s album), some overdue (like Waje’s debut album), some due to popular demand (Olamide’s BGEL), some worth entries/debut albums(Burna Boy), some were just to register in the ears of people or hearts as the case might have been.

HipHopWorld Online has compiled a list of 10 albums we thought were strong as regards production, delivery, features and the overall quality of music.

BANKY W – R&BW

PRODUCTION – Banky W, Cobhams Asuquo, Masterkraft, M.I., Sarz, Samklef, Spellz

GUEST ARTISTES – Camp Mulla, eLDEe, L-Tido, Lynxxx, M.I., Niyola, Rotimi, Sammy, Shaydee, Skales, Sarkodie, 2Face Idibia, Vector

Banky W went in on this album showing his versatility as a rapper on different tracks. Bulk of the songs was produced by Spellz who has also had an impressive year.

Olamide-Baddest-Guy-Ever-Liveth-album-cover-600x600

OLAMIDE – BADDEST GUY EVER LIVETH

Guest Appearances – Pheelz, Buckwyla, Ketchup, Ice Prince, Pepenazi, Endia, Viktoh, B.banks, Phyno, Pele Pele, and Bez.

Producer – Pheelz

Rapper Olamide has entered the history books as one of two Nigerian rappers to release two full albums in one year (the other being Eedris Abdulkareem). His second album YBNL was released in November 2012. His follow up Baddest Guy Ever Liveth comes one year after his highly successful sophomore. As an indigenous rapper Olamide has managed to make himself the hottest rapper in a country with so many ethnic groups.

BURNA BOY – L.I.F.E

Features – Tuface, Timaya, M.I, Olamide, Reminisce & Wizkid

Producer – Leriq

Fast forward three years later, a mixtape and three successful singles that stated the quality of the Nigerian sound was evolving, Damini Ogulu popularly called Burna boy has finally blessed us with an album. The 19 track deluxe edition titled L.I.F.E [Leaving an Impact for Eternity] takes us on a journey through his thought processes; where he’s coming from, where he is now and a glimpse of where he’s headed.

BRYMO – M.D & S (Merchant, Dealers and Slaves)

Guest Appearances- David
Producer- Mikky Me

Just eleven tracks long, BrymO has created a piece of work that will amaze, astound and more than impress even his most fervent critics. His voice sounds richer and rejuvenated. The production on the album is layered with enough soul to last three generations. And it probably will because BrymO is essentially saying that all that glitters is not gold, a well-known saying. Is it a classic? It’s too early for that. Is it a masterpiece? It is a soulful masterpiece that is emotionally charged with amazing production.Merchant, Dealers and Slaves is the best sounding album of the year – at least so far.

Jesse-Jagz-2

JESSE JAGZ – THY NATION COME

Guest Appearances- Lindsey, Brymo, Wizkid, 9ice,

Producers- Jesse Jagz, Kid Konnect, Samklef, Shady, Phaze Hop and Guilty Beatz

On Jagz Nation Vol. 1, Thy Nation Come, Jesse Jagz now presents himself as an anti-pop hero and mainstream music rebel. Listening to his sophomore set, you wouldn’t know Jesse Abaga was the genius behind crowd pleasers such as ‘Wetin Dey’ and ‘Jago’. He has shed his populist skin and is now wearing a new toga that is a tapestry of ‘Loopy bars’* and reggae music. There were fears that Jesse Jagz might go all Snoop Lion and get lost in the hazy firmaments of Zion. The instantaneous positive reaction his ‘Redemption’ single attracted online tempered these early fears. Jesse is using Rastafarianism to push his art and not his brand.

TIWA SAVAGE – ONCE UPON A TIME

Guest Appearances- Don Jazzy, Iceberg Slim, Sarkodie, Don Jazzy, Leo Wonder, General Pype, Flavour

Producers- Marcus Macauley, Warren ‘Oak’ Felder, Gospel on the beat, Raydar Ellis, Sauce Wilson, Don Jazzy, Altims, Baby Fresh, Harmony Samuels, Spellz ‘Magik Boi’, Sossick and Del B.

After 2 years of dropping singles that have shaped pop music by female artistes in Nigerian music, Tiwa Savage finally drops her highly anticipated album‘Once Upon A Time’. Spanning over an hour, Tiwa Savage takes us on a fairy tale of mostly about love and other things.

dkm-dbanj

D’BANJ, KAY SWITCH, JSOL – D’KINGS MEN

Artist- D’Banj, Kay Switch and J. Sol

Guest Appearances- Falli Ipupa, Snoop Lion, Big Sean, Olamide, Durella, Ikechukwu, Olamide, Naeto C

On D’ Kings Men there are no huge pop anthems like the ones crafted by Don Jazzy in the Mo’ Hits period. What we have on this compilation are strong pop songs hinged on D’Banj’s infectious personality and amazing instrumentals. The doomsday prophecies concerning D’Banj’s demise do not come through on this compilation, on the contrary he is flourishing. D’ Kings Men exposes us to D’Banj’s new kingdom. He is still very much a king with a smaller but promising empire.

OMAWUNMI – LASSO OF TRUTH

Guest features – Timaya, Wizkid, Flavour, 2Face Idibia and Afay
Producers – Cobhams Asuquo, Don Jazzy, Sizzle-Pro, Oscar Herman Acker, Young D, Sarz and Soso Soberekon

So what truth does Omawumi show us with The Lasso of Truth? The wonder woman lets us know that life is not a bed of roses, never give up on love, have fun, fight for what is right and if you’ve got it flaunt it. Oh yeah she also lets us know that she is a bloody good singer. The Lasso of Truth is a well thought out album derive of the gimmickry and half-assed effort by many singers in the country. This makes Omawumi a hero in my book, a wonder woman and that is the truth.

REMINISCE – ALAGA IBILE

Guest Artistes- Sossick, Endia, Olamide, Obadice, Naeto C, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy

Producers- Sossick, Shizzi, Chopstix, Sarz, Dee Vee, Jospo

On this project majority of the production is handled by Sossick who is best known for his work on Da Grin’s classic sophomore rap album C.E.O which is also regarded as the greatest Yoruba rap album ever. With additional production from wonder boy Sarz, Alaga Ibile is Reminisce’s most impressive work so far.

Sossick who is no stranger to producing solid albums has helped Reminisce orchestrate a solid piece of work that is part Hip Hop and part pop. Reminisce should no longer be regarded as the chief of indigenous rap (alaga ibile) but the high chief.

WAJE – W.A.J.E

Producers- Del B, Spelz, Ekely,Sizzle Pro, Cobhams Asuquo, Leriq , M.I
Guest Appearances- Tiwa Savage, Burna Boy, M.I, Phyno, Eva

Waje has made us wait a while (a pretty long time actually) for her debut album W.A.J.E - Words Aren’t Just Enough. Before her debut LP Waje had steadily risen to be one of the best vocalists in the country. After pushing the release date of her album endlessly and tweaking it numerous times, Waje finally drops her first body of work.

Words aren’t just enough to express what Waje has packed in her debut. It is a musical tour de force boasting of a strong voice and amazing songs.

Nairaland GeneralOgun Fire Truck Kills Woman, Son, Grandpa by vosquare(op): 12:42am On Dec 25, 2013
It was tears at Ijako Owode Road, Sango Ota area of Ogun State after an emergency fire service truck belonging to the Ogun State Government Fire Service swerved off the road and crushed a trader, Bunmi Fatoyinbo, her seven-year-old son, Emmanuel Fatoyinbo and her 76-year-old father, Pa Moses Sogunro.

The incident, which happened on Friday afternoon, was said to have thrown residents into confusion and caused a gridlock for hours.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Baba Vulcaniser, said the crimson-coloured Mercedez Benz 911 water truck, marked, Ogun AG 123 A09, was occupied by two men and a woman.

Our correspondent learnt that it was driven by one Sokunbo Michael of Ogun State Fire Service, Ota.

The eyewitness added the driver was on top speed, before he lost control and rammed the vehicle into where the victims were sitting.

He said, “We have all been here together for the past eight years and Fatoyinbo (Bunmi) had been the one selling food, recharge cards to all of us.

“On Friday, around 1pm, I saw the truck coming on top speed. The brake must have failed; the driver swerved off the road and headed straight for where she was sitting. Her father was on a brief visit and was with her. The truck crushed Fatoyinbo (Bunmi), Emmanuel and their grandpa.”

Our correspondent learnt that the fire truck was still fully loaded with water and was returning from a fire incident scene when the tragedy happened.

The first daughter of the deceased woman, Esther, told our correspondent that the three victims were rushed to a specialist hospital, where her mother gave up.

“Before the accident, my mom had sent me on an errand. I was in the bus when people started calling me from different places, saying there had been an accident.

“When I finally got there, my mom had been rushed to Medicare Hospital in Ado Odo, Ota. The doctors said they needed blood for her. Before I knew it, she just stopped breathing and I was told she had died.”

The first son of Sogunro and a brother to Bunmi, Oluwatoyin Sogunro, said the remaining two victims were referred to another hospital in Lantoro, Abeokuta.

He added that before they could get to the hospital, they also died, throwing the entire family into mourning.

When our correspondent visited the Sango Police Station on Monday, where family members had gathered to see the policemen investigating the incident, the remaining five children of the deceased were there.

One of them, 10-year-old David, who is in Primary four, said their mother had promised to take them to a tailor a day to the incident.

He said, “My mom told us to prepare to take our cloths to a tailor for Christmas on Thursday. Then on Friday, when I was playing in our neighbour’s house, they called me. I saw my sister, Esther crying; she said mummy had died. When they told daddy that mummy had died, daddy also fainted and people started to beat his chest to wake him up. After that time, they told me that my grandpa and Emmanuel died too.”

The husband of the deceased, Sunday Fatoyinbo, said his world had collapsed because his late wife had been the bread winner of the family since he lost his job 10 years ago.

The certified Agricultural Science expert pleaded with the state government to give him a job, and give scholarship to his children who now faced a bleak future without the usual support of their mother.

He said, “Being a Christian, I have taken this tragedy with a strong mind. Losing three souls in a day is painful. I have nothing left again. I lost my job 10 years ago, and it had been my wife that was supporting the family and sending the children to school.

“I have handed this matter to God. But I appeal to the government to give me a job, and probably give scholarship to my first and second born, to relieve me of this burden.”

The Police Public Relations officer for Ogun State command, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident and said the suspect was in police custody and would be charged for manslaughter.

He added that the Fatoyinbo family had told the police that they were not interested in pursuing a court case against the driver.

He said, “The family has said they don’t want any case. However, as police officers, we would play our role and pursue the course of the law. It is now left to them to file an application to the court to indicate that they were no longer interested.”

The head of the Ogun State Fire Service, Sango Unit, Mr. Obiwunmi Akanbi, said the agency had visited the deceased family to condole with them and would render all necessary assistance.

“We are with them as we speak because we heard that mother and son will be buried soon,” he said.

Nairaland GeneralBritish Airways Plane Collides With Building At Johannesburg Airport by vosquare(op): 9:27pm On Dec 23, 2013
A plane carrying more than 200 people has struck an office building while preparing to take off from the South African city of Johannesburg.
The British Airways flight to London was taxiing at OR Tambo International Airport when its right wing hit the building, injuring four people inside.

South Africa's Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft had travelled down a taxi-way that was too narrow for it.
The incident involving the Boeing 747-400 happened late on December 22, 2013, Sunday.

The control tower "told them to take one taxi-way and they took another one. They took a wrong one," said aviation authority spokeswoman Phindiwe Gwebu.
Passenger John Hart told the BBC: “We were just taxiing along and then boom!”

He said the captain described it as a “little incident” but everyone on the right-hand side of the plane could see what had really happened.

None of those on board was injured but four ground staff in the building were hurt.

"They sustained slight injuries and are fine," a spokesperson for Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) told Eyewitness News.

Mr. Hart said the passengers were allowed to leave the plane after about an hour but because of the fuel spillage they had still not been able to reclaim their luggage.

The aircraft has since been moved and operations have not been disrupted, ACSA says.

In a statement to the BBC, British Airways said all 182 passengers were provided with hotel accommodation and alternative flights are being arranged.

BA said an investigation was under way and that it was "giving our assistance to the independent South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA)".

PoliticsI Will Not React To Jonathan’s Reply –obasanjo by vosquare(op): 7:55pm On Dec 23, 2013
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he will not react to the response of President Goodluck Jonathan to his letter.

Jonathan had on Sunday sent an 11-page reply to Obasanjo’s letter, dated December 2 and titled ‘Before it is too late’, where the President debunked various allegations leveled against him by the Obasanjo ranging from corruption; Jonathan 2015 ambition; to training of a killer squad.

In a statement on Monday by Obasanjo’s Media aide, Tunde Oladunjoye, the ex-president said he had fulfilled his desire to call the attention of Jonathan to salient issues, adding that he would no longer elaborate on the content on the letter.

The statement read, “Since the publication of the letter written by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, which was in response to the letter earlier written by revered former President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR; we have received several requests from local and international media asking to know Chief Obasanjo’s reaction to Mr. President’s response.

“One, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, acknowledges Mr. President’s letter/response. However, Baba, as he already indicated in his December 2, 2013 letter, does not wish to make further comments beyond the contents of his last letter to Mr. President or react to the said letter/response from Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Let me quote from page fourteen, paragraph two of Chief Obasanjo’s letter to Mr. President dated December 2, 2013 and titled Before It Is Too Late:

‘I will maintain my serenity, because by this letter I have done my duty to you as I have always done, to your government, to the party, PDP, and to our country, Nigeria’.

“Two, let me reiterate here, that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR has tremendous respect for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The statement added, “Chief Olusegun Obasanjo sincerely appreciates all of you, my cherished colleagues; gentlemen and women of the media profession, who have been very upright, ethical and robust on the subject matter.

SportsCHAN 2014 SHAME: Home-based Eagles Lack Training Kits by vosquare(op): 1:24pm On Dec 22, 2013
As the 2014 African Nations Championship in January draws nearer, the Super Eagles are reportedly short of Adidas training kits, thus resorting to sub-standard kits in preparation for the event, reports ’TANA AIYEJINA

As African football fans anxiously await the commencement of the 2014 African Nations Championship, scheduled for South Africa from January 11 to February 1, it is not the same story for Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles, who are making their debut in the competition.

The Eagles are taking part in the competition exclusively designed for African players active in their domestic leagues, for the first time, having failed to qualify for the two previous events in Cote d’Ivoire (2009) and Sudan (2011).

But our correspondent gathered exclusively that the team, which began preparations for the championship on December 10 in Abuja, with coach Stephen Keshi inviting 30 players to camp, have no training kits.

It was learnt that the players were made to settle for sub-standard kits reportedly bought in Lagos by the football federation.

An official of the team, who pleaded anonymity, said the players have been alternating the few training kits left.

He said, “As I speak to you, the national team doesn’t have kits in camp with few weeks to the 2014 CHAN. Chidi (an official of the team in charge of balls and kits) was sent to the market to buy kits last week.

“When we asked for the kits, we were told that some were shared to government officials and the others to the junior national teams. We don’t knoww the manner of contract they signed with Adidas.”

All efforts to reach the media officer of the team, Ben Alaiya, proved abortive as his phone was switched off.

However, when our correspondent called the Nigeria Football Federation spokesman, Ademola Olajire, for his reaction, he replied, “Let’s talk later. I don’t understand what you are saying.”

One of the players in camp, who also pleaded not to be named, said it was a dishonour to the home-based players.

“I don’t know why they are treating us like this. Is it because we are home-based players? The foreign-based pros cannot be treated like this,” he said.

Former Eagles centre-back, Taribo West, lamented the sad development, saying it was worrisome that the team had no kits to train with ahead of a major competition like CHAN.

The Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games gold medalist said it was part of efforts by some people to frustrate the efforts of Keshi.

Taribo said, “In our time (in the Eagles) the officials even gave out the kits to their girlfriends. Somebody can just lock them somewhere just to punish the boys because they are home-based.

“They will do everything to frustrate the team because they want Keshi to fail. They said ex-internationals were not good coaches. Keshi came in and has been giving us favourable results but they want the downfall of the man and the team. However, they won’t succeed.”

Despite the shortcoming, the team’s technical crew has been working tirelessly to ensure that the final squad put up a fine performance in South Africa next month.

What first caught the eye when Keshi’s list of 30 was released was the inclusion of Kelechi Iheanacho, Dele Alampasu and Taiwo Awoniyi, the trio members of the Golden Eaglets that won the U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in November.

In the team’s first practice match, goals from Gbolahan Salami, Aliyu Abubakar, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Oghenekavro Etebor gave the Eagles a 4-1 win over newly promoted Nigerian National League side, Prisons FC of Abuja.

On December 16, Keshi changed the team’s training schedule from once daily to twice as he toughened the players ahead of the competition.

Two players Bayelsa United midfielder Mohammed Ajia and Elkanemi defender, Reuben Ogbonnaya, were dropped for low productivity while Bendel Insurance duo of Obannu Erhune and Ikeleji Bello were brought in as their replacements.

Also invited were Warri Wolves midfielder Ewenike Achibi and Enyimba striker Mfon Udoh.

On Wednesday, Barnabas Imenger and Ikechukwu Azubuike’s goals helped the national side to a 2-0 win over hard-fighting Niger Tornadoes in Abuja.

Even though the team may not have the opportunity of playing another national team before the commencement of CHAN, observers are optimistic that the team can get the job done in South Africa, just like their counterparts did early in the year, winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations for a third time.

“South Africa is a fertile land for Nigeria and the team can do it again. They can win the double despite the insensitivity of the officials,” Taribo said.

Former Nigeria midfielder, Etim Esin, was also upbeat about the home-based Eagles’ chances of conquering Africa despite participating in the competition for the first time.

“In Africa, you cannot write-off Nigeria. We may not have the best league, but we have the best players; players who are hungry to succeed and make names for themselves. I think that will be the driving force when the boys get to South Africa,” Esin said.

Ex-junior international, Mike Onyemachara, said, “We’ve got fantastic players who can get the CHAN job done.”

However, Keshi has lamented the absence of the trio of Gabriel Oboabona, Gabriel Reuben and Juwon Oshaniwa from the team.

The players, once the foundation on which the team was built, have secured contracts in Turkey, Scotland and Israel respectively.

“The only problem we have is that of time; we have little time to prepare but we will still give it our best shot and ensure that we replace some of our players that have left us for bigger things abroad,” Keshi said.

But the former Nigeria captain refused to make promises.

“It’s because we’ve got little or no time and we are working with new boys on this project. I hope we do the nation proud in CHAN but I cannot promise the trophy,” he added.

The creation of CHAN by the Confederation of African Football was a response to the desire to revive and strengthen domestic leagues on the continent regularly weakened by a mass exodus of top players who leave their home countries to play for foreign teams.

Congo DR won the first edition in 2009, beating Ghana 2-0 in the final while Tunisia defeated Angola 3-0 two years ago to emerge the champions of Africa at that level.
