SUMMARY

This lesson, “laying foundation for family is an eye-opener for all those who want a godly family in the present generation. There are some worldly postulations and philosophy that have been proffered concerning marriage but have not yielded positive result. Children of God should bear it in mind that nothing can compare favourably to the standard of God. It is, therefore, advisable for children of God to stick to what God has stipulated for His children.

LESSON 2

GOD’S PATTERN FOR THE FAMILY

Suggested Hymns: G.H.B. 223, 260

Devotional Reading: Matt. 19:1-12

The Greatest Fellowship

Matt. 11:28-30

In today’s passage, Jesus made a universal call to all human being who want to fellowship with Him. Fellowshipping with God through Christ is the greatest fellowship. If you answer this call, He will give you rest as you continue to learn from Him. He is the only one who can forgive sin and make everything new in people’s lives. The call of Jesus to this fellowship is to all the oppressed (they that are heavy laden) and weary. To those who have no hope of escape from the bondage of Satan. When you answer the call, He will give you peace and rest. You will also learn holiness from Him, you will learn meekness and consecration from Him. You will then know how to persevere to the end.

Point of Emphasis: Come unto Jesus for the greatest and rewarding fellowship.

Prayer Point: Oh Lord, help those who have not answered this call to answer quickly and help all of us that have answered to continue to learn from you and live like You.

BACKGROUND

Relationship is simply a significant connection or similarity between two or more subjects of discussion. In social term, it centres on how do I get along with others. The greatest relationship was demonstrated in ambition by God. He created us in His image and likeness so that we can have fellowship with Him. Through Adam and Eve’s transgression, the bubble burst, yet God reconciled us through His Son – Jesus Christ, what a love. This week’s lesson is based on the greatest relationship which is divinely shown and displayed by God towards mankind.

NOTES ON THE TEXT

PART 1: THE GREATEST LOVE STORY (JN. 3:16; ROM. 3:8, 23-25)

John 3:16 summarised the whole Bible in one sentence “For God so love the world, that He gave His only begotten Son…” This gives us an insight to unconditional love displayed by God that is wide enough to embrace anyone in the world who believes in Him.

The greatest love was done at the expense of the Lord Jesus Christ who paid the supreme sacrifice for us on the cross of calvary. Man does not merit to be loved by God because all have sinned (Rom. 3:23) Though man loves conditionally but God demonstrated His greatest relationship toward us unconditionally.

God set forth Christ as a propitiation to show His greatest relationship to mankind through love. He needs not to be persuaded before showing us mercy. However, anyone who wishes to benefit from the greatest love in believing in Jesus Christ must take these three steps (Jn. 3:16)

Have sure conviction that Jesus is the Son of God and the only Saviour for lost mankind.
Surrender to have fellowship with God and live in complete obedience to Christ Jesus.
Have absolute trust that Jesus is both able and willing to bring you to a final salvation and to fellowship with God in Heaven.
Note: The word ‘not perish’ denotes escaping a dreadful reality of eternal punishment.

PART 2: IT IS ALL ABOUT CHANGES IN NATURE (GEN. 1:26; GEN. 2:7; 5:3; 2 COR. 5:17)

The Bible gives us account about the creation of man. Gen. 1:26 and 2:4-25 give us two complementary account. Man and woman were created in the image of God. We were specially created to respond and have fellowship with God. We are not products of evolution. We are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14). God specifically imparted and breathed into the first man. This shows a unique relationship of divine life to human life (Gen. 2:7). It was the same unique image that Adam passed to his Son (Gen. 5:3)

Human nature became corrupted through sin. Man knows what is good but lacks the ability to do it. Therefore, he became ineffective. The remedy for restoration is made possible through Jesus alone. No one comes to God except through Jesus Christ (Jn. 14:6)

The fallen nature must be renewed for anyone to enjoy God’s greatest love. The restoration of sinners to fellowship with God is achieved through Christ’s work of redemption. God made those who accept Jesus Christ by faith to become new creations. Believers become new creations and are renewed after the image of God, sharing His glory (2 Cor. 5:17; Co. 3:10)

God has removed the hostility, barrier of sin through the atoning death of Jesus. All that a sinner needs to do is to forsake his sin, change his nature and become a child of God through Jesus.

PART 3: LIKE-MINDEDNESS IN RELATIONSHIP (AMOS 3:3; 2 TIM. 2:19; EPH. 1:4)

Relationship requires agreement to thrive. Amos 3:3 says “can two walk together, except they be a greed? No real fellowship can exist between two people unless they agree on fundamental truths. This shows that a person cannot have a genuine relationship with God unless he or she accepts His word and term.

Despite the increase in false teachers (Matt. 24:11) and many straying from the truth, God knows those who remain faithful. Those who belong to Him must turn away from sin (2 Tim. 2:19). Paul describes those chosen by God in Christ as those destined to be holy and blameless (2 Thess. 2:13). Election of mankind is only in union with Jesus Christ – it is “Christocentric” – He is the first of all the elect of God (Matt. 12:18) while the election to salvation and holiness is always certain for the body of Christ, the certainly for individuals depends on personal living faith in Jesus Christ and having a like mind with Him on things relating to divine injuctions.

CONCLUSION

The greatest relationship and love that one can enjoy in this world is to have harmonious relationship with God. It is certain for the body of Christ to continue to experience the deepest love ever made available through Jesus Christ, each individual must thrive to avail themselves this relationship by making holy living a culture.

QUESTIONS

In your own word, explain John 3:16 as the greatest love story ever in history

At whose expense was the greatest love made possible, what did he do?

Mention the three steps that anyone who wants to benefit from the greatest love should take.

Proof that man is not an object of evolution

What is christocentric?

Love: An Evidence of New Life

1 Jn. 3:14-18

One receives the life of Christ at the point of accepting Him as one’s Lord and Saviour. The Bible gives an assurance of being born again in 1 John 3:9 by saying that, “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God”. The seed of God in this verse means the nature of God. As the nature of God if holiness, so is His nature love. The Bible even says God is love. This, therefore, implies that anyone who claims to be born again possesses God’s nature of love. This love is practical. It is relational. It is the direct opposite of hate. Another basic assurance of being born again and having eternal life, according to this passage is love. Anyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer. He has no portion of eternal life because no murderer will enter God’s kingdom. If you have Jesus in you, you must demonstrate it by acting in love to the brethren around you. Show a true love to that widow, orphan, and hungry brethren around you today. You can by so doing raise a hope of eternal life in them.

Point of Emphasis: Prove that you have the new life by loving in deed and in truth.

Prayer Point: Lord, I receive the seed of love and ability to demonstrate it in Jesus’ name.

Regeneration

Jn. 3:1-8; 4:34

As it is in the natural, so it is also in the spiritual, birth signifies the beginning of either a natural life or the spiritual life. The story of the new birth and regeneration are central to the restoration of the lost relationship and fellowship with God. Regeneration is an act of God alone in which He renews the human heart and makes his spirit come alive again to relate and fellowship with God. in regeneration, God acts at the origin and deepest point of human person to affect the functional distortion caused by sin. This work of regeneration and new birth is effected by the Holy Spirit quickening us to spiritual life from spiritual death by changing the disposition of our heart, inclining it back to God as the inclination and disposition of the heart reflects the real man – Jn. 14:16-18. Regeneration begins the process of restoring God’s image in our live. Since regeneration is spiritual rebirth, have you experienced it in your life?

Point of Emphasis: The Holy Spirit works upon our heart to change our person.

Prayer Point: Lord, let me experience the new birth and sustain my relationship with you.

God’s Loving Grace

Jn. 3:16-17

The human race got it wrong but God is saying, I still love you”, I don’t want you to die and waste away, I still desire a relationship with you, your sinful nature and past notwithstanding, I have catered for you by sending Jesus. Because of His love, He sent Jesus to save us from the impending doom and its fatal consequences upon the whole human race. The transition from this terrestrial life to the great beyond has no rethink or exit opportunity once you embark on it and as such God is showing love which should be reciprocated by accepting Jesus as salvation is a gift which is activated by acceptance. It does not fall on all and it is not imputed on anyone without his or her consent. It is a gift that must be accepted. Since relationship must involve at least two parties, God’s loving position towards mankind is fixed and positive, He is waiting for you to come on board. He has played His loving role, the deal is only completed by your loving role of accepting God’s golden offer that brings you back to a loving relationship with Him. Mind you, it cannot be enforced, you need to decide for Him today.

Point of Emphasis: Salvation is a gift which must be accepted.

Prayer Point: The death of Jesus and His shed blood will not be in vain over my life.

Roads That Lead Nowhere

Acts 4:5-12

The fall of man left him an orphan with no relationship and fellowship with God as he was sent out of grace to disgrace. God being a loving Father pitied man’s fate and, therefore, adopted many measures by which man might be restored back into fellowship and relationship with Him. God adopted measures by which man might be restored – He first used the law and later the prophets including other means which failed. Religion is man’s effort to reach God – the fallen nature made man incapable to live up to the demands of fellowship and relationship with God because the power over the flesh is lost. Man’s effort has led to the springing up of so many religions and modes of worship but there still remains a vaccum in man crying for occupation apart from many religions, man has made many alternative road to God. All other roads apart from Jesus lead to hell.

Point of Emphasis: Religion is man’s effort to reach God and it is inadequate to secure a relationship with God.

Prayer Point: Help me oh God to know how to travel on the right path so as to end at the right destination.

The Fall Of Man Distrupted The Relationship

Gen. 3:1-10

Whenever anything that is treasured and fragile falls, the result is the breaking, shattering and distortion of its original image. The story of the sin of Adam and Eve, our fore parents which by extension affected the whole human race is a representation of the fatal fall from a height so high and glorious to a depth so shameful and hopeless. The fall left the image that was erstwhile good and enviable, battered and distorted not only in Adam and Eve but all their descendants – the human race. Sin has a sting that sinks, shrinks and makes one stink. Man retains the image structurally but not functionally, and man became alienated from God, lost relationship and fellowship and man became slaves of sin. Sin reduces, debases and disgraces. Old time photography treasures the dark room for the development of film negatives and as such any life given to sin is lived in darkness in which everything negative thrives so well.

Point of Emphasis: Sin has a sting that sinks, shrinks and makes one to stink.

Prayer Point: God give me power over sin and let your image be restored functionally in my life so that I can relate with you properly
