DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Tue. 6/12/2016 Be Willing To Trust God Matt. 18:1-6 The word “converted” in verse 3 could be rendered as change required by Jesus which begins with becoming like little children. See yourself as a dependant whose sufficiency is in Christ Jesus. As children rely on their parents for supplies, so must you rely on God, because of your new relationship to Him? Be humble like the little child and trust God wholeheartedly. Don’t allow flesh to dictate your actions. Point of Emphasis: Be humble like a little child and depend on God alone. Prayer Point: Lord, the arm of flesh will fail me, help me Lord Jesus to trust You for my needs. |

DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Mon. 5/12/2016 Be Born Again Jn. 3:1-8 Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish council. He believed that Jesus was sent by God having heard and seen what He had done. He came one night to give Jesus compliments for the miracles He had performed. It was the issue of being born-again that was paramount in the heart of Jesus. He told Nicodemus frankly that “verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born-again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (verse 3). This was repeated in verse 5 to show the importance of the subject matter. The issue is as vital today as it was in the days of Jesus’ ministry. The starting point of entering into God’s kingdom is that you must be born-again. It is a core course that any believer who wants to make heaven should take it serious. Irrespective of the name you may claim to bear or whatever people call you, if you are not born-again, you are just deceiving yourself. Point of Emphasis: You must be born-again. Prayer Point: Lord Jesus, I have realised the importance of being born-again, I surrender my totality unto You; be the Lord over my life and help me to tell others about you. |

LESSON 1 4/12/2016 THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM Suggested Hymn: G.H.B. 147, 148 Devotional Reading: Ps. 19:7-14 Topic For Adults: The Gospel Of The Kingdom Is Perfect Topic For Youths: Embrace The Gospel Of The Kingdom Topic For Intermediates: Be Equipped Thoroughly Scripture Lesson: Matt. 5:20; 18:3; 3:7; Rom. 3:23; 1 Jn. 1:10; Matt. 3:1-8; 4:17; 5:19 Memory Verse: From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt. 4:17) NKJV DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Sun. 4/12/2016 Reward For Gospel Proclaimer Dan. 12:1-3 Daniel prophesied the time of trouble for the nation of Israel in fulfilling Jeremiah 30:7 but they will finally place their faith in Jesus as their Messiah, Lord and Saviour. Verse 2 contains the clearest Old Testament reference to the righteous and the wicked. He says the wise who show the wisdom (verse 3) by the way they live their lives and how they lead others to righteous way of life shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, transformed and the glory of God will reflect in and through them. Since we have such a wonderful promise for the proclaimer of the gospel, why don’t you make it a point of duty to preach the gospel always? Point of Emphasis: There is great reward for those who proclaim the gospel. Prayer Point: Holy Spirit, give me grace to proclaim the gospel so that I can be rewarded. BACKGROUND The understanding of the gospel of the kingdom is very important as to make success of our Christian race. There are things we should know about God and His kingdom. This week’s lesson conveys to us what we need to know about the expedience of living a holy life to please God and how to subscribe to and live in the kingdom of God. NOTES ON THE TEXT PART 1: BACKGROUND OF THE KINGDOM (MATT. 5:20, 18:3) We regard God as sovereign over all things. The Old Testament bears witness that ‘God reigns’ both in the kingdom of God among men and the kingdom of His providence (Ps. 93:1; 95:1). The kingdom of God is significant in the nation of Israel, the declaration of the gospel and presence of the church. In both Old Testament and New Testament, we discovered that God rules sovereingly as King over all His works. Regrettably, man resisted God’s reign by following the enticement of Satan. This is against what Jesus implied in Matt. 5:20 that an iota of His word must not be violated. Jesus canvased for a change from those who had transgressed against His word in Matt. 18:3. With time, the gospel spread to the gentile nations. Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of God has two aspects. The reign of God became a reality in the New Testament through His proclamation and ministry, climaxed in His death and resurrection. It is necessary for us to understand Jesus’ teaching and central claim, that the kingdom of God is near (Matt. 12:28) because the long awaited day of salvation in the Old Testament has now been realised in the New Testament. PART 2: REASON FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM (MATT. 3:7; ROM. 3:23; 1 JN. 1:10) The Pharisees and the Sadducess were the two prominent religious groups in Judaism. The Pharisees adhered strictly to both the entire Old Testament and their own human interpretations. They emphasised that salvation came by obeying the letter of God’s law. Their religion has to do with outward form without inner change of the heart. They refused to acknowledge the depravity of their own nature. The Sadducees on their own were theological liberals and anti-supernaturalists, they appeared to hold on to the law of God but they denied many of its teachings like resurrection, angels miracle, immortality and the judgment to come. The ignorance of these groups of people made them unqualified for the kingdom of God. What necessitate the gospel is the need for people to accept God’s offer of mercy in order to become the citizen of God’s kingdom. Rom. 3:23 affirms that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The fallen state of man made man to run foul of acceptance before God but through the mercy of God, the gospel of God’s salvation which gives room for second chance was proclaimed. The act of God’s goodness to forgive sin and pardon people of their guilt is the heart of the gospel of the kingdom. PART 3: REQUIREMENT AND REWARD FOR THE RECIPIENT (MATT. 3:1-8; 4:17; 5:19) Christ came to inaugurate His kingdom by preaching ‘repentance’. This is a free decision on the part of sinners made possible through grace given to them as they hear the gospel. Jesus began His ministry by preaching repentance to the sinners (Matt. 4:17) He went to where the sinners were and preached the gospel of the kingdom to them. This was what John the Baptist centred his message upon – Matthew 3:2. So, also some prophets in the Old Testament. The primary requirement for becoming a member of God’s kingdom is stated in Matthew 3:8 ‘bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. It can, therefore, be deduced that fruit of righteousness must follow genuine repentance. Fruit of righteousness must be evident in the life of a believer who has forsaken sin. Anyone who claims to believe in Christ and has true saving faith does not live life that does not produce good fruits. This fruit-bearing refers to spiritual virtues, such as the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Gal. 5:22-23 - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control. It is expected of anyone who is obedient and possesses these virtues to witness God’s power in his or her life here on Earth. Because being a member of God’s kingdom is to proclaim God’s power and thereby enjoy forever in that kingdom. Genuine believers are given the inner compulsion and power to fulfil God’s will – Rom. 8:13; Matt. 7:21). Those who walk uprightly according to the gospel are made great in the kingdom of God. The reward of believers in the kingdom of heaven will be determined by their attitude toward God’s commandments, that is, teaching and obeying them (Matt. 5:19). CONCLUSION God’s intention for all mankind is seen in His kindness which He had shown through the gospel. Let’s endeavour to be faithful to the requirement of the gospel and allow our external confession of Christ be accompanied by inner transformation of our hearts. (Matt. 5:21-28) QUESTIONS Why is the understanding of the gospel necessary to believers? How did the gospel of salvation preached in the Old Testament become a reality in the New Testament? Why are the Pharisees and the Sadducees not eligible for the kingdom of God? Explain why salvation is the reason for gospel proclamation. State the primary requirement for becoming a member of God’s kingdom. |

DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Sat. 3/12/2016 Regeneration: Power Of The Gospel 2 Cor. 5:11-21 Paul asserted that all men must appear at the judgment seat of Christ. He enjoined Christians to consecrate their lives to Christ. The apostle mentioned two things that are necessary in order to live for Christ, these are regeneration and reconciliation. Divine grace enables us to have a thorough change of heart. Regeneration power makes us to act from a new perspective inherited from Christ Jesus. You must evaluate your life if it’s reflecting Christlike life, because if you are truly born-again and regenerated, you must truly be a new creature. Point of Emphasis: Regeneration comes only by the power of the gospel. Prayer Point: O Lord, it is Your will that I should not know Christ after the flesh, but to live for Him in truth and spirit. Help me to do this on daily basis. |
DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Fri. 2/12/2016 Core Message Of The Kingdom’s Gospel Matt. 4:12-17 In Matt. 3:1-12, John the Baptist’s role as precursor to Jesus is emphasised and his message is described as one of repentance and preparations. A school of thought says that the arrest of John served as the stimulus for the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. The passage read this morning gives an account of Christ’s preaching in the Synagogue of Galilee. In fulfilment of prophet Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 9:1-2, Jesus preached the core message of God’s kingdom to the people so that those who lived in darkness could come into the light that gives salvation. Christ put a great respect upon John’s ministry when He preached the same core message of repentance which John had earlier preached to the people (Matt. 3: . The core message of the Church should centre on repentance so that genuine repentance can be accompanied by the fruits of righteousness.Point of Emphasis: Let not the preaching of repentance cease in our church. Prayer Point: Help me O Lord to preach repentance to those living in darkness. |
DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Thur. 1/12/2016 The Invisible Power Of The Gospel Acts 2:36-43 Peter preached the gospel with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; He succeeded in doing great exploit for the Lord. The promise which Jesus had earlier made to His follower was in action. In pouring out the Spirit, Jesus intend that the Spirit would mediate His presence to believers and empower them to continue to do all that He did while on Earth (Jn. 14:12). The invisible power of the gospel was displayed when Peter preached the gospel for couple of minutes: sinners repented and came en-masses. The same result can still be achieved by you if you will endeavour to live a holy life and preach the gospel under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Point of Emphasis: Maximum result will be achieved if you preach the gospel under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Prayer Point: Characterise my ministry O Lord with signs and wonders as I preach the gospel. |

DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Wed. 30/11/2016 The Needs For The Gospel Rom. 3:21-26 Nobody is born a saint. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (v. 23). God executes His redemptive plan through Jesus Christ so that we can be reconciled to God. God made Jesus Christ to pay for our sins so that we can be in right relationship with Him and be liberated from the power of sin. There is a need to preach the gospel to make everybody come to the knowledge of the truth. The only condition God requires for salvation is faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. The atoning death of Jesus has the power to produce the full desired effect of redemption when appropriated by faith. As a believer, you must proclaim it. Point of Emphasis: Proclaim the power of God for salvation which is constantly fresh and relevant. Prayer Point: Having been saved, help me to preach the gospel on daily basis. |
DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Tue. 29/11/2016 Universality Of The Gospel Foretold Ps. 22:22-28 This is a song of praise by the psalmist. He sang it to Jesus Christ’s victory on the cross. Jesus is the exalted Redeemer who gathers around Himself His brethren. Verse 24 reveals that the death of Jesus Christ results in help for the afflicted (v. 26) and the preaching of the gospel in all nations (v. 27). He rules over all the nations. All the nations of the world will worship the Lord and submit to His rulership. Jesus reigns, let the world tremble before Him. Point of Emphasis: For the kingdom is the LORD’S and He is the governor among the nations. Prayer Point: As I worship You in truth and in spirit, let me eat and be satisfied. |
4:17) NKJV DAILY DEVOTIONAL READING Mon. 28/11/2016 Recovery And Restoration Through The Word Isa. 29:17-24 Isaiah’s prophecies of God’s judgment are never without hope. There is a later assurance of a hopeful future. He envisioned that in the last days of this age, the humble and poor of Israel will turn to God. The rejection of Israel is only partial and temporary. They will eventually accept God’s salvation in Christ. Their present failure to respond to Christ is not due to an unconditional divine decree, but to their own unbelief and disobedience (Rom. 10:3). The salvation of individual Jews depends on faith in Jesus Christ through the gospel, because there is no fixed decree of God which offers salvation to a set of people and another which makes the other set doomed. Recovery and restoration comes through the word of God. Obey God’s word today through faith in Christ and become a child of the Living God. Point of Emphasis: Recovery and restoration is made possible only by believing the word of God. Prayer Point: Lord, make me a fruitful field (v. 17) and do not allow me to be put to shame. Help me to recover all that You have purposed for me. |

REVISION DAY 6 SATURDAY 26/11/2016 LESSON 11 CHRISTIAN RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GOVERNMENT Suggested Hymns: G.H.B. 33, 35 Devotional Reading: Rom. 13:1-7 Topic For Adults: Your Duty To The Government Topic For Youths: Don’t Resist Authorities Topic For Intermediates: Respect The Law Scripture Lesson: Rom. 13:1-7; Mk. 12:16-17; 1 Tim. 2:1-4; 1 Pet. 2:13-14 Memory Verse: Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authorities except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God (Rom. 13:1) NKJV. SUMMARY The subject of the duty which Christians owe to civil government; a subject which is extremely important, and at the same time exceedingly difficult is being considered today. There is no doubt that the Apostle Paul had expressed reference to the peculiar situation of the Christians in Rome; but the subject was of so much important that he gave it a general bearing as Christianity is to extend to the uttermost part of the age as Jesus prophesied. Summarily, Christians are to submit to authorities and people in position of power. They are to respect the constitution, obey the law, pay their dues and above all, live as Ambassadors of Jesus who endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy that was set before Him. However, Christians are to take a stand when the laws interfered with the right of conscience; when they commanded the worship of idols, or any moral wrong, then it was their duty to refuse submission. LESSON 12 THE GREATEST RELATIONSIHP Suggested Hymns: G.H.B. 28, 32 Devotional Reading: Rom. 8:31-39 Topic For Adults: The Heart And Purpose Of God Topic For Youths: Live in God’s Love Topic For Intermediates: Demonstrate God’s Love Scripture Lesson: Jn. 3:16; Gen. 1:26; Gen. 2:7; Amos 3:3 Memory Verse: Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law (Rom. 13: NKJVSUMMARY The greatest relationship and love that one can enjoy in this world is to have harmonious relationship with God. It is certain for the body of Christ to continue to experience the deepest love ever made available through Jesus Christ. Each individual must thrive to avail themselves this relationship by making holy living a culture. |

They must show forth the light they have received through salvation to the unbelievers. They must love unbelievers but hate their sin. They must do all things possible, through their honourable conducts and cautions relationship to win unbelievers to Christ. |
