The World Bank has praised Ghana for what it calls the enviable growth of the country’s economy in terms of development over the past ten years. According to the World Bank, Ghana’s significant growth is as a result of strong governance systems, increased productivity and the discovery of oil in recent years, ranking Ghana 67th on the world rankings. This was disclosed at the opening ceremony of the first Global Public – Private Partnership (PPP) Conference here in Accra, under the theme: “Addressing Ghana’s Infrastructure Deficit: Moving from Policy to Implementation- the Public-Private Partnership Alternative." Delivering a message on behalf of the World Bank, Country Director for Ghana Yusupha Crookes noted that the strides made by the country is one that needs to be recommended. Mr. Crookes also assured that the World Bank is ready and willing to support Ghana’s PPP program to ensure targets and goals set under the program are achieved. The three-day event is the first of its kind to be organized in the country by C – Nergy Global Holdings, an investment advisory services firm and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. The conference is to create the platform for practitioners of PPPs to engage with investors and countries that have successfully implemented the PPPs. It will also see delegates from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia among other countries. http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=322240 |
Ghana continues to make strides as far as the development of ICT is concerned. In this report Charles Benoni Okine writes about the implications of Ghana’s ranking as number one in Africa with the highest internet speed. The heightened competition within the telecommunications sector in the country coupled with the huge investments in infrastructure upgrading and replacement by the players in the industry seems to be paying off. Consequently, Ghana has been ranked first in Africa as the country with the highest Internet speed according to the latest global internet speed report released early this month. By implication fast internet speed, aside improving productivity and job creation establishes, it can create an enabling environment for businesses and the government as a whole. According to The Global Information and Communications Technology Department of the World Bank and IFC, for every 10 percentage-point increase in high-speed Internet connections there is an increase in economic growth of 1.3 percentage points. The Internet Society also points out that the Internet is about sharing. It is successful because it makes all Internet resources available to all users simultaneously. This resource sharing ability is central to the Internet’s utility and success because it enables the interconnection of diverse applications over heterogeneous networking media running at diverse speeds. High speed internet allows for growth without central control because everybody shares in the control of the network. For instance, when one places a phone call one is connected with the person at the number one dialled: when one is on the Internet, one is connected with everybody else on the Internet, all of the time. The Internet is continuously evolving. Some of the more profound recent changes have been caused by the impact of broadband access networks. In the last decade, the number of broadband subscribers worldwide has grown over one hundred times. Widespread broadband deployment has led to tremendous innovation in Internet applications and huge increases in the average amount of bandwidth consumed per user. The effects of these changes are now being felt around the globe and Ghana is no exception. Ghana ranking in Africa. Ghana is ranked number one and it is followed by Kenya, Angola and Rwanda. The Ookla Net Index, saw Ghana placing 73rd globally with an average broadband speed of 5.36 millions of bits per second (Mbps). Lithuania was first in the world with 31.67 Mbps followed by South Korea 30.59 Mbps and Latvia in third position with 27.42 Mbps. The index listed Ghana Telecom (6.13 Mbps), Zipnet/Broadband Home Limited (2.02 Mbps) and Scancom Limited (1.51 Mbps) as the major Internet service providers (ISPs) in the country. Ookla is a broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. The company’s software and methodologies set the broadband industry standards for accuracy, popularity, ease of use and the subsequent development of statistical data. The broadband is what? Upon landing the various offshore fibre optic cables - a technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data, at the shores of the country, SAT 3, Glo One, Main One and now West Africa Computer Systems (WACS), indicated the importance of the project. One key thing the players mentioned in the various statements during ceremonies to outdoor the cables is the ability of the cables to increase the broadband speed to allow for fast downloading of data among other thing using the internet. The term bandwidth refers to the amount of information that can be passed through a communications channel in a given amount of time; that is, the capacity of the channel. It is often expressed in bits per second, or alternatively bytes per second, leading to lots of confusion. Bandwidth figures are used to express the capacity of a network link or interface (e.g., a 100Mbps Ethernet interface) or the rate of information transfer (e.g. a file downloading at 3.2KB/s). Broadband speed is the rate that information is sent (upload speed) or received (download speed) on your broadband line. It is measured in 'Mb' ('megabits per second') - a unit of data transfer to and from a computer storage device. Broadband usage refers to the volume of information a user is allowed to use over your broadband connection each time. In using the broadband, it is easy for the user to measure the strength of the service provided. In doing so one must ensure that one is not using his/her Internet connection for anything else while the test runs. It is also advised that multiple tests are run at different times of the day; peak hours may make a significant difference. Reaction by Telecoms Chamber The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications shares the view that most of our mobile operators have upgraded their 3G networks to deliver greater speed. The detail behind the figures shows vast improvements in the speed of internet cafes in Ghana, and competitive consumer broadband tariffs. All of these factors have added to our African leading performance. According to the Chamber, Ghana’s ranking has been growing over the last 2 years. Ghana was 157th two years ago. The driver of sustainability is internet adoption. As more people surf on the internet at home, at work or on their mobiles, we’ll see even further improvement in service and speed, and the industry will move to correspond with this demand. Most sites and applications require high speed to work effectively, so if mobile operators and ISPs want to give their customers the best internet experience; they need to be able to deliver network speed that supports it. Our members have taken up that challenge and are conquering in Africa. “Our members are very proud that they are clearly a driving force in Ghana’s ranking as Ookla Net Index specifically mentioned three of them in the latest global Internet speed report”, the Chamber pointed out. Conclusion. The Chamber is of the view that broadband today, aside improving productivity and job creation establishes an enabling environment for businesses and the government as a whole. “As a Chamber, we are proud of this development and considering the global mobile data traffic growth figures, we can envisage a gradual increase data penetration in Ghana for which our members are investing to cater for that demand”, its said.

Surfline has officially launched Ghana’s first 4G LTE network in Accra and Tema, giving both consumers and business internet speeds that are ten times faster than 3G services currently on offer. Marking the historic occasion, Surfline – the only telecoms company owned 100% by Ghanaians – announced a tasty, limited launch offer: free devices and double bonus for life, for all new customers. Less than 20% of Ghanaians currently use the internet; a statistic not lost on Surfline, who believe this represents an opportunity to inspire businesses, families and students to embrace the internet and achieve and experience much more, in less time. Speaking to Citi Business news at the launch, Head of Marketing Communications at Surfline, Rosey Fynn said “with strong reliable network, we will actually be able to increase the internet penetration to get Ghana to be a part of a connected world.” She hinted to Citi Business News that her outfit will, next year, roll out their services to the Ashanti and Western regions. The move forms part of an aggressive expansion campaign she indicates is to position Surfline as the first choice internet service provider in Ghana. “Our plan is to rollout nationwide and do that quickly. Part of our license regulation requires us to and our goal is to be across the rest of the country in a couple of years”, she said Dr Yaw Akoto, Chief Executive Officer for Surfline Limited said: “Ghanaians are disillusioned with the internet services that are currently on offer, because they have not experienced what was promised. “Surfline’s 4G LTE service has been created with a single-minded focus on data, which means our network quality will not be compromised. With our service, customers are always guaranteed a 4G LTE service and nothing less.” “As Ghanaians ourselves, we believe that people living and working in Ghana deserve the best. Across the world, people are enjoying super-fast internet speeds powered by 4G LTE and Surfline is proud to bring this into Ghana for the first time; and for Ghanaians to experience the difference this brings”, said Dr Yaw Akoto. He also revealed that Surfline would continue its network rollout across Ghana in the coming months. The benefits of using the Surfline 4G LTE service are astonishing: 100mb files can be downloaded in seconds; films that take four hours to download can be downloaded in just 15 minutes; streaming music and standard videos takes less than a second to buffer and 20mb games can be downloaded in 25 seconds. Surfline has also unveiled a matchless shopping experience at its flagship shop in Osu (near Firefly) and has also opened further shops in Accra at East Legon (American House), where customers can experience and purchase the latest 4G LTE-enabled devices, SIM cards and top-up vouchers. Surfline kiosks have also been established across Accra and Tema, where customers can purchase Surfline SIM cards and top-up vouchers. A zero-rated website: www.surflinegh.com has also been introduced, where customers can access all the information they need on Surfline’s services, buy data packages and top-up credit on their accounts with debit cards. Customers can find out much more through the website and Surfline GH page on Facebook. Surfline’s world-class 4G LTE network was developed; and is supported by global partners including: IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and Alcatel-Lucent. http://www.citifmonline.com/2014/08/20/surfline-first-4g-lte-launched-in-ghana/ |

Emotions ran high last Friday at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region following the startling confession of a 28- year old gold dealer of how he had sex with more than 183 women and used their vaginal fluids for money rituals. Kwame Assenso, who raced to the Life Way Miracle Centre at Obuasi Asonkore for a spiritual solution after nemesis had caught up with him, said his sexual escapades with the young women happened within a period of one year. Showing signs of remorse, Kwame Assenso said he committed the act in order to get rich quickly and also become the don of the gold trading business at Obuasi. In his search for money and power, the young man claimed he was introduced to a Mallam at Navrongo in the Upper East Region, who gave him a money god, while he was a galamsey operator at Obuasi. Narrating how he came by his money, the gold dealer said he was directed by the Mallam to sleep around with women and use the vaginal fluids of the victims to perform rituals for the blood money. "It all started a year ago when I was introduced to this Mallam by my friends. I wanted to fortify my position as a gold dealer and get more money as well. He helped me out by giving me a money god which needed the vaginal fluids of women," Assenso recounted. The Obuasi Tutuka resident revealed that he bonked several women and lost count of them after the 183rd woman, and paid each of the women between Ghc 300 and Ghc 500 for a night's encounter, which all happened at his residence in Obuasi. Trouble started for the renowned old dealer, Kwame Assenso, when he met one "prayerful woman" whom he brought home for a hot sex session one night, but it turned out to be the end of the road for him. According to him, he returned to his room to find this lady praying on his bed, after going out to pass urine, which action rendered him motionless, and he began experiencing sleepless nights thereafter. "I asked why she was praying, and she replied that it was nothing. I could not touch her and since then, till my deliverance, I experienced nightmares," he disclosed. He narrated that he began experiencing recurrent nightmares and therefore went to Prophet Kofi Sarfo's church for spiritual intervention, where he made the startling revelation of the blood money and the number of women he preyed upon. Kwame Assenso asked the victims of his blood money for forgiveness and pledged to use the proceeds to help the poor, professing that he had turned over a new leaf. "Our women like money and I want them to know that not all that glitters is gold. They should be careful and not cheapen themselves for money." http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=321374 |
Bad refereeing is worth €1 billion, apparently. FIFA is getting sued for having bad referees at the World Cup. A Colombian lawyer has taken it upon himself to get justice on behalf of the globe. But mainly himself for the "distress" that the referees caused. And how much does he want? €1 billion. Yep, 74-year-old Aurelio Jimenez has sued FIFA for €1 billion because of his emotional and physical distress. That includes being taken to the hospital with cardiac problems, something that is apparently all Carlos Velasco Carballo's -- and thus, FIFA's -- fault. Carballo was the referee in Brazil's quarterfinal win over Colombia, which saw both teams play very physically and Carballo come under fire for not getting the match under control. There were several bad tackles, many of them aimed at James Rodriguez, which caused Jimenez distress. It is assumed that Brazil's Neymar was also caused distress when Colombia's Juan Zuniga kicked him in the back and broke a vertebrae, but the Colombians are the ones who were distressed. "I decided to sue FIFA in the Colombian judiciary system because in the past world soccer championship in Brazil, there were many wrongdoings related to referees who damaged many countries and their selections, among them the Colombia team," Jimenez continued. "Moreover, FIFA's referees caused big moral damages and distress to Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, England, Uruguay, Mexico and Costa Rica." Jimenez has said that if he wins his lawsuit, he will give the money to a government organization aimed at helping Colombian children, which is nice. Bad World Cup referees can help kids! http://sports.yahoo.com/news/fifa-sued-1-billion-over-232124792.html |
