Monrovia — Barely weeks after the United States of America cancelled the visas of three Liberian officials, FrontPageAfrica has gathered as reported by GhanaWeb that corrupt government officials from Ghana and all over Africa will be denied visas into the United States as part of moves by the U.S. to clamp down on corruption in Africa.

According to the Ghanaian news outlet, the move, which was initially only applicable to only a number of African countries, will now cover all. Africa has been battling with corruption for decades.

The West has been heavily criticised by civil society organizations for not doing enough to help the continent deal with the matter, among others. Most of Africa’s corrupt officials spend and stash their booty in the West.

Quoting a senior American official, the report states that the Principal Deputy Assistant secretary at the Department of State‘s bureau of African Affairs for the US, Robert Jackson, told Citi FM’s Vivian Kai Mensah that America will not issue visas to government officials in Africa that are corrupt.

‘We are not giving visas to them anymore.’

Meanwhile, about forty African leaders, including Ghana’s John Mahama, will be meeting with US President, Barack Obama, next week for the US-Africa Leaders Summit.

Here in Liberia a FrontPageAfrica revelation week reported that three officials, including Associate Supreme Court Justice Kabineh J’aneh, Youth and Sports Minister Eugene Nagbe, and Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff were denied entry either en route or upon entry in the U.S. after they were granted visas by the embassy in Monrovia in diplomatic passports. The trio had some affiliation with different rebel groups during Liberia’s civil war, which lasted from 1989 to 2003.

Information Minister Lewis Brown confirmed that three senior Liberian government official’s one from each branch of the government visas have been revoked by the United States government. The Minister said the government of Liberia like any other responsible government around the world will write the U.S. government inquiring why those senior officials’ visas were revoked.

Said Brown: “We are hearing all sorts of speculations, some claiming that my visa has been revoked. These are all speculations that are totally untrue.” Responding to questions that the US has requested President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to present the blueprint of all those accused of war and economic crimes, the Minister described the comment as totally False, noting that the U.S. government respects Liberia as a sovereign state. The United States Embassy in Monrovia also confirmed the reports of the cancellation of visa of some Liberian government officials.

“We are aware of reports that several Liberian government officials had their U.S. visas cancelled recently. Under U.S. law, we cannot comment on individual visa cases. That said, the partnership between the United States and Liberia remains strong. ”

“We have worked together through many difficult times. We are committed to supporting Liberia and her people as they seek to foster democracy and economic growth and to rebuild the country”, the Embassy indicated in a Statement.

In the wake of the latest development, there is growing fear amongst Liberian officials majority of whom have their families residing in the United States and pay frequent visit there.

Malam Shamuna Ustaz Jibril, known for his spiritual interpretations and predictions, has descended on the Ebola pandemic attributing it to the consumption of carcasses.

He has challenged medical researchers to probe the effects of the consumption of the carcasses of felines.

He disagreed that the disease is transmitted through handshake explaining that “it can be passed through coughing and blood transfusion and therefore not by handshakes.”

The disease, for now, he said, has no cure but there are medicines that could suppress it.

With time, however, he said he would come up with some recommendations.

Until then, he said those who are suspected of infection should chew tobacco leaves or bitter leaves and drink honey.

To doctors dealing with infected patients, he said, “They should inhale tobacco leaves and wash their hands with ‘dawadawa’ solution followed by the chewing of the ‘dawadawa’ seeds.

Those who wash the dead bodies should put tobacco leaves and seeds into the mouth, ears, nose with fresh tobacco leaves.

Earlier, bitter kola was presented as something that could prevent people catching the disease.

The Municipal Health Director for Tarkwa Nsueam, Dr. Jack Galley, has appealed to Ghanaians not to panic as the Ebola disease had not yet been recorded in the country.

He said health service officials had put in place strict measures to ensure that people who enter the country from any of the infected countries are properly screened.

Dr. Galley said when his outfit organized an awareness creation programme for some stakeholders in the municipality on how to prevent the spread of the Ebola disease.

He said an isolated ward had been created at the old Tarkwa Government Hospital and an additional ward would soon be set up at the new Tarkwa Government Hospital located at Bogrekrom to handle Ebola cases.

Dr. Galley called on all to join in the fight against the spread of Ebola by adhering to basic healthy lifestyle by washing hands after visiting patients in hospitals.

The Municipal Disease Control Officer, Mr. Ebenezer Tetteh, said symptoms of Ebola include intense weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden and severe fever, sore throat, headache, internal and external bleeding, muscle pain, rash, impaired kidney and liver function.

Mr. Tetteh called on the public to report to the hospital authorities if they detect any body with these signs.

Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah is confident Ghanaians will not see the Ebola virus even though they will hear about it in other countries.

He gave the assurance in an interview with Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng shortly after visiting the Elubo border, Tuesday.

Immigration and Port officials at the Elubo border in the Western Region say measures they have put in place will make it extremely difficult for anyone with the Ebola virus to enter Ghana from their end.

According to them, the Elubo border and all unapproved routes to Ghana from Ivory Coast have been well secured to make it impossible for anyone to enter Ghana without their knowledge.

The Health Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah, his deputy, Director General from the Ghana Health Service and Country representative of the World Health Organization spent time with officials at the Elubo border to learn at first hand what they are doing to ensure that no one with the deadly disease enters Ghana from that border.

The head of Port Health in Takoradi Edward Saka said there has not been any suspected case of Ebola in the area.

He stressed that they take people coming from neighboring Ivory Coast through stringent health checks before they are allowed entry into Ghana.

Head of Immigration at the Elubo border Staff officer Alexander Kpodji told the minister and his entourage they have well secured border.

He said Ghanaians should trust them to do a good job and prevent the disease from getting into Ghana from their end.

Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah told Joy News' Seth Kwame Boateng what he has seen at the Elubo border gives him hope that Ghana will not record any case of Ebola.

"I am impressed with what i have seen here and the assurances given by the Port Health and Immigration," he said

He however called for more vigilance to ensure that the virus is kept out of the country. "When it comes to Ebola we may hear of it but will never see it," he assured.

The Country Representative of the World Health Organization Magda Robalo said she is convinced Ghana’s borders are secured.

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has overtaken Manchester City’s Yaya Toure and Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon to become Africa’s highest paid sportsman.

The Black Stars captain topped Ivorian midfielder Toure and Eto’o to become Africa’s highest paid sportsman by The Magazine’s Money Issue salary survey project.

Gyan will make $16m annual profit from his salaries, wages and endorsements as well as his private businesses, breaking even with Tamba Hali who plays for NFL side Kansas City Chiefs.

The UAE-based striker, who earns a tax free salary in the Arabian country, finishes ahead of Toure who earns US$ 15.4 yearly income from his weekly US$ 322,000 salary at the Etihad club.

Samuel Eto’o was said to be on the salary of $13.3m while Emmanuel Adebayor is at a distant fourth.

Gyan has invested his money in the food industry with Vits Instant Noodles with other interests in boxing, music, real estate and education.

After seven years since the discovery of oil and gas reserves, Ghana's gas infrastructure will be ready for commissioning this August, the Ghana National Gas company has said.

The gas project which has been punctuated by delays and postponements is now 99.78% ready, Director of projects at the GNGC Ben Asante, told Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur.

Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur was there on a working visit last Wednesday. The new August date comes after the company missed its announced deadline of April 2014.

The Vice President was told, the delays were because engineers have had to run some 1,200 tests and follow-up adjustments.

The announcement that the project is near complete confirms the Energy Minister's expressed hope that Ghana will get gas by September.

The impact of having gas supply among Ghana's energy options cannot be under estimated.

According to the Energy Minister, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, "the future of our electricity is going to be thermal generation. Those thermal plants need a lot of gas".

Ghana has been suffering erratic power supply for the past two years.

"120 million cubic feet of gas is going to give us 400 megawatts of power...cheap...there will be reduction in tariffs".

Dr Ben Asante added, some of the products to be expected from the Ghana Gas outfit are lean gas, LPGs, Pentanes and condensates which according to him should meet 76% of the country’s gas and energy needs.

The Western Corridor Gas Infrastructure Project is expected to support the supply of fertilisers (ammonia and urea), and begin industrialization in the salt, alumina, petro-chemicals such as plastics, methanol.

He also noted in his presentation that with the Ghana Gas coming on stream, some 500 million dollars a year will be saved by the state.

The initial revenue expected to accrue to the company is estimated at 0.5 billion dollars yearly, he said.

Dr. Ben Asante said as much as the company is ready for take-off at the end of this month, this also depends on some external factors including readiness of its partners such as Tullow and the Volta River Authority.

He said they have been given some concrete assurances. Road networks in the area would also have to be well developed, he said, pointing out the Krisan- Tikobo route as one of the road networks crucial to the Gas Company’s take off.

His team, he said, has a short term plan to rehabilitate some of these roads and even as they work on long term constructions.

In his assessment, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur said as much as he is skeptical when it comes to engineers and timelines, he still believes a lot of work has been done and especially noted that he was impressed with the number of Ghanaians working on the project.

The GNGC was established in 2011 to develop the infrastructure needed to utilise gas freely flowing from the Jubilee oil fields in the Western Region.
