Hellfire is like the lines of longitude...they are imaginary but yet help in air travelling among others ,so is hellfire simply checking people from sinning but yet imaginary.

haibe: If you mean lake of fire, it is really true, a place where all the ungodly will be destroyed eternally. If however you mean the imaginary hell fire like the Greek mythology where Lord hades punishes sinners, then this is unbiblical.

When you die, you remain dead and unconscious until the resurrection, either to eternal life or to eternal death in the lake of fire.

But as Christians, christ has promised us resurrection to eternal/everlasting life. The ungodly will perish in the lake of fire.
