Lesson 1 - 1.0 What is a resume and why is it so important? A resume is a one- to two-page document summarizing your career objectives, professional experiences and achievements, and educational background. The heading of the resume should contain your name, address and contact information. The body of the resume should be broken into the following sections: career objective, profile/summary, professional experience, achievements, scholastics, and references. Your career objective should be brief, up to two sentences; it should give your potential employers an idea of how you wish to move forward in your professional life. A concise profile or a summary should discuss who you are and how your skills and experience best apply to the job you are interested in. The summary, as well as other parts of your resume, should not contain personal information that discloses ethnicity, sexual orientation, marital status, age, living situations, or any other personal information that is not directly related to your career. Personal profile/summary should only contain a few well-written sentences that convey what you can bring to the table in terms of the specific job. Use this section to attract the employer’s attention, but don’t go overboard in trying to be creative – stay professional. Your experience listing should include information on one to five jobs you’ve held, starting with your current or last job, and listing previous positions in chronological order. The listing should include the date range of your employment, name of the companies or person(s) you have worked for, and the city and state where the place of employment is located (full address of employment is not necessary). List your title and your main responsibilities, with emphasis on duties that are applicable to the type of work you are seeking. Your education should include college, graduate and post-graduate work, as well as any courses or professional certifications that are relevant to your career development. Achievements, volunteer positions, publications and interests should only be listed if they apply to your professional work experience References should be listed if requested; best practices suggest not to list generic statements about references being available upon request as this is understood. In the competitive, internet-driven world of job searches, your resume represents you to potential employers. It serves as your tool to attract attention, get the interview and/or get a job. A great resume will make you stand out from other candidates by showcasing your aptitudes. Think of your resume as your sales pitch – you need to sell yourself in the best possible way. Invest some time and research into developing your resume. You will want to make sure that your resume is error free – double check your grammar and spelling, make sure that all company and school names and cities are spelled properly. A resume containing errors, no matter how minimal, will give your potential employer an impression that you do not have attention to detail, that you don’t take time to double check your work, and that you are a poor communicator. Additionally, make sure that your resume is formatted well. Stick to basic fonts, like Arial and Times New Roman. Keep the font size and color standard; don’t use large fonts or multi-colors in your resume. Don’t go overboard with bold, italicized, or large-cap text. Keep your format consistent and make sure that the resume looks great when viewed online as well as when printed out. Keep your resume to one or two pages – any additional pages give an impression that you either don’t know how to concisely summarize your education and experience, or that you are listing unnecessary information for the sake of taking up space. If you’ve never written a resume before, reference books, Internet resources or seek assistance from a professional resume writing service. A well-written resume can make a difference between being stuck at your current job and getting an interview to land the job of your dreams. Please post all your question here about creating job-winning resume Next lesson will focus on how to write a professional summary for your resume |

Subject line: First Lesson - Blogging From The Beginning Welcome to the first lesson in the "Blogging From The Beginning" crash course. Over the next few days you will receive several lessons that will help you learn the ins and outs of beginning to build your own successful blog. In your lessons will go over some basic options for setting up your blog as well as some different techniques that you can use to make it popular and profitable. In this first lesson let's talk about how to choose the right blog platform to suit your blogging needs. Starting a blog is one of the most accessible ways to make money online. If you are starting your first blog, you are being confronted with many choices about how to set up your blog, including selecting your blogging platform. A blogging platform is the software that will help you turn your writing into a website that can be easily navigated and accessed by visitors from around the world. There are two basic platforms to choose from when it comes to successful blogging: Wordpress and Blogger. Both of these options have advantages and disadvantages. Before you make your decision, you should read through the pros and cons of each and think about which will be best for your needs. Blogger has several advantages. It’s very easy for new bloggers to use. Setting up a blog with Blogger is as simple as following a few prompts. There is nothing to install. Some of the other advantages include: Price: Blogger is totally free to use. You don’t have to purchase a domain name as the system will give you an address based on the name of your blog. Ease of use: Posting to your blog is easy. You can also change the look of your blog very easily. This is all done through Blogger’s dashboard. If you have more than one blog with Blogger, you can access all of the blogs from the same dashboard. However, Blogger does have some major disadvantages when it comes to creating money making blogs. Lack of flexibility: Compared to other options out there, the design and function of a Blogger blog is very limited. You can download and install custom themes for the blog, but most look very similar. This means your blog won't stand out as well in your niche. Domain name: You will get a free domain name with your Blogger blog, but the domain name will be “yourblogname..com” instead of “yourblogname.com.” Ownership: You will never truly own your Blogger blog because the files and content are hosted on Blogger’s server. Wordpress is the other popular platform for blogging. There is a free option that functions similarly to Blogger. However, there is also a free option that allows you to have your own website name. You install Wordpress on you website hosting and hook it up to a domain name that you own. If you don’t know how to do this, your hosting company should be able to walk you through the process. There are two ways to install wordpress. The first is through the auto installer software such as Fantastico. The other is manual installation. I usually recommend the manual installation although it requires professional skills Other advantages include: Customization: Wordpress themes are diverse and plentiful. Some themes will even make your blog look like an online newspaper. Features: Wordpress users have created tons of “plugins” that will increase the functionality of your blog and help you make the most out of your site. Do you know that most of Nigeria online newspaper are built with wordpress? However, Wordpress is not without its problems. It is not as user friendly as Blogger, which can make it intimidating for newbies. You will also have to spend money to get your domain name and your website hosting. Despite these disadvantages, most professional bloggers go with the Wordpress option because they maintain ownership of their blogs and can customize them to their heart’s content, but ultimately the choice is up to you and what will fit your needs the best. That's it for today's lesson. In your next lesson we will talk about brainstorming and generating good topic ideas to write about on your new blog. Exercise for Today Play around blogger and wordpress and decide which to start with. After you have decided, open an account on the platform you choose. 1. Although I am not a Fan of 9-5 job, I prefer working as a freelancer for companies in Nigeria and abroad and that is how I make my money. Who does not like to earn in dollar. But I think job failure come from two major factors. First reason why many do not get called up for interview is because of the way they prepare their resume. While I was starting as a freelancer, I often find it difficult to find job just as traditionally. But then I went into research and finally come up with about 50 articles that show how my resume was responsible. When I apply the information I started getting jobs online. I tried the advise offline and I was invited for a couple of interview which I never honoured. The other reason is because many do not follow the right ethical procedure during interview and they lost their opportunity to impress their employer.

Making money blogging in Nigeria is not easy. You need to choose a niche that people will like. The important thing is traffic. Linda make money from traffic even though the content of her blog may not impress many. For you to succeed, you need regular source of content. I will recommend MRR & PLR material. That is what I used to create my own profitable blog.
