Three policemen attached to the Igando Police Division, allegedly killed two drivers at a road block for refusing to give them a bribe in the early hours of Wednesday. The development came less than a week after the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, ordered that no policeman should mount any roadblock again. It was learnt that after killing the drivers who were staff of Multiple Covenant Investment Limited, the policemen labeled them robbers. It was gathered that the victims were on their way to work on a motorcycle and were flagged down by the policemen who demanded money from them but they refused to part with any money. It was learnt that they were about to speed off, when one of the policemen was said to have opened fire. The bullet perforated the back of the man on the passenger seat and burst out from his front and entered the back of the man who was riding the motorbike. The victim on the passenger seat was said to have died instantly, while the rider was still alive. According to reports, in a bid to cover up their crime, the policemen took the corpse and the other victim, who was seriously injured, to their station where they were labeled armed robbers. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/policemen-kill-two-drivers-at-illegal-checkpoint/ |
By Emma Amaize WARRI— ABOUT 20 persons were reported to have been wounded, while the whereabouts of two persons remained unknown following an inter-communal clash between two neighbouring communities, Okuno Jesse and Otumara-Jesse in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State. It was gathered that the crisis caused by the disappearance of a two-year-old child of a native of Okuno-Jesse, which made his kinsmen to storm Otumara-Jesse with guns, cutlasses, battle axes, among others and allegedly unleashed mayhem on the villagers. One Chief Joseph Akodi was allegedly kidnapped and beaten by the youths, who mutilated his body after attacking a police station in Jesse. The two missing Otumara-Jesse indigenes were identified as Iboyi Okoro and Unuvwota Okoro, while the father of the two-year-old child, whose disappearance generated the crisis is Mr. Okpanoko. It was further gathered that since February 9, residents had been fleeing Otumara-Jesse as a result of the attack. Property worth millions of naira, including crops, domestic animals, electricity poles, cables, buildings, and an oil palm mill, belonging to the Unugbrogodo of Idjerhe Kingdom, Chief J. I. Ogude, at Otumara-Jesse, were allegedly destroyed by invading youths. https://naija-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/former-Minister-of-Aviation-Chief-Femi-Fani-Kayode-300x199.jpg The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday re-arraigned a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, before a Federal High Court, Lagos on 47 counts of money laundering. The re-arraignment followed the transfer of former trial judge, Justice Ramat Mohammed, out of the division. The development prompted the re-assignment of the case and subsequent re-arraignment before Justice Binta Nyako on Thursday. The first arraignment was in December 2008. Fani-Kayode, who pleaded not guilty to all the counts again on Thursday, was accused by the EFCC of involvement in money laundering by, among others, transacting with funds exceeding N500,000 without using a financial institution and accepting cash payment of about N230m. He was granted bail shortly after his arraignment though the judge ordered that he should not travel out of the country until the final determination of the case. Earlier, the defence counsel, Chief Ladi Williams, had opposed the arraignment on the grounds that the defence was having a pending motion for stay of proceedings in the case before the Supreme Court. He therefore sought an adjournment till after May 21 when the Supreme Court would hear their motion. He said an interlocutory appeal against the decision of the Appeal Court in Lagos, which admitted Fani-Kayode’s statement of account as evidence had been entered at the Supreme Court. Williams also contended that the appellate court, while admitting his client’s statement of account as evidence, did not order for a fresh trial. While opposing the application for adjournment, the prosecution’s counsel, Festus Afeiyodion, said the re-assignment of the case had rendered the interlocutory appeal filed at the Supreme court an academic exercise. He also added that there was no proof that the said interlocutory appeal had been entered at the Supreme Court. Justice Nyako adjourned the matter till April 24 for mention and directed the defence to file all necessary processes regarding the interlocutory appeal. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/efcc-re-arraigns-fani-kayode-for-money-laundering/ |
No fewer than 1,000 Ndigbo who fled the northern parts of the country as a result of the attacks by the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have relocated to Calabar, the Cross River State capital. Our correspondent learnt on Thursday that at least 100 people from the South-East arrive in Calabar weekly from either the northern parts of the country or Libya, Malawi and some other African countries experiencing crisis. The leader of Igboezuo Youths Assembly, Mr. Okey Maduekwe, and the association’s secretary, Mr. Onyema Udohirinwa, commended the Cross River State Government for providing a peaceful environment to accommodate the displaced people. The group noted that the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Liyel Imoke, did well to provide a peaceful environment as well as infrastructure in key areas like road, water, education, hospital, and rural development. It added that because of the peaceful nature of the state, non indigenes living in areas that have been witnessing crisis had decided to relocate to Calabar. The group said, “We thank God for Senator Liyel Imoke. He has proved himself a nationalist and manager of resources even with the meagre resources available to the state; he has been able to make a remarkable impact.” The Assembly, however, appealed to the state government to expedite action on building mega markets as the present Watt and Etim Edem markets were congested. They noted that the mega markets would accommodate businessmen that were relocating to the state. The group also urged the state government to open up estates in Calabar, Ugep, Ikom, Ogoja and other urban areas to accommodate more of the displaced people coming to the state, stressing that such new places would help to decongest the state capital and boost the economy of the state. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/boko-haram-1000-displaced-igbo-take-refuge-in-calabar/ |
A Champions League love story – Barcelona’s Lionel Messi breaks the competition record with his 19th strike in knockout games. The Argentine, still only 24, surpassed Raul and Andriy Shevchenko with his late strike away to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night The Ballon d’Or winner scored an incredible 53 in all competitions last term and has already added an astonishing 37 in 2010-12 for Barca, playing – as always – with plenty of heart. So it is perhaps fitting that on Saint Valentine’s Day, the much-admired Argentine created his own celebration of love by breaking yet another record, as he surpassed the mark set for goals scored in the knockout stages of the Champions League in Germany on Tuesday, with his 19th strike in games played at the business end of the tournament. Messi had scored six against Arsenal and 12 others before Tuesday, to bring up 18 in total, leaving him level – at the age of just 24 – with Raul and Andriy Shevchenko, now in their mid-30s and on the verge of retirement from the game. Messi now has 44 goals in Europe’s premier club competition, leaving him sixth on the tournament’s all-time list of top goalscorers – behind Raul (71), Ruud van Nistelrooy (56), Thierry Henry (55), Shevchenko (48) and Inzaghi (46) while Cristiano Ronaldo, incidentally, is in 10th place with 31. But almost half of his goals have come in the knockout stages, which is a measure of Barca’s success in the competition over the last few years. Messi missed the latter stages of the Catalans’ 2006 win due to injury, but was instrumental in both the 2009 and 2011 successes, scoring in the two finals against Manchester United and netting a delightful double at Real Madrid in last year’s semi-final showdown at the Bernabeu. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/uefalionel-messi-breaks-record/ |
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, said the defunct Nigeria Airways was a failure to the country and the aviation industry in particular. Speaking at the launch of a book by Oba Olufemi Ogunleye, entitled: “Nigerian Civil Aviation: Decade of Security, Safety and Passenger Comfort Development in NCAA” in Lagos, Obasanjo said the defunct Nigeria Airways was run by a board of directors, that was very corrupt. He noted that the airline failed because of the high level of corruption perpetrated by those running it, adding that all that could be done to salvage the situation then was to liquidate the airline. He said: “Nigeria Airways was a failure. When you go through the history of what Nigerians have done to run down their country, it is bad. When I was leaving public office in 1979, there were 32 aircraft in Nigeria Airways fleet but when I came back in 1999, I only met one. “I looked back to history and discovered that the board of directors of the airline was corrupt. The board will form a company in Jessey Island, USA and will give the repairs of the aircraft to that company. So, that was how they embezzled the airline’s fund and ran it down” “Where is Okada Air, where is Albakar Air, where is Afri Air? They all went the way of Nigeria Airways. The situation of Nigeria Airways was not different from the Nigerian National Shipping Lines.” He noted that if Nigeria would achieve the Vision 202020, transportation should be regarded as one aspect of the country’s economy, which civil aviation was a core part of it. “I believe that if we are going to achieve Vision 202020, transportation is one aspect of our national economy that we cannot do without and civil aviation is a core part of it. I hope that what we have achieved so far, we will continue to build on it,” he stressed. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/nigeria-airways-was-a-failure-obasanjo/ |

A Nigerian man has been convicted of raping a woman while she slept. Kazeem Kadiri sneaked into the woman's bed in the middle of the night after being rejected by another woman with whom he and his friend had been having a party. During a trial at High Court in Livingston the 29-year-old victim gave evidence from behind a screen in closed court. Judge Lady Stacey deferred sentence for social work reports. The court heard the rape took place at a house in Livingston, West Lothian, in November 2010, after the woman, an Edinburgh office worker, had been on night out for a birthday celebration. She admitted she had had well over 20 drinks and had gone to bed very drunk. During the night she was woke to find a man lying on top of her. She told him to get off her and pushed him away. 'Lightbulb moment' She contacted the police the next morning after realising she had been raped. During the trial, the jury heard forensic evidence that Kadiri's DNA matched samples taken from the woman's body. Another woman, the householder, said she had invited Kadiri and his friend Bola Sodimu, 37, back from a nightclub at 03:00. She said she had sex with both men but then had a "lightbulb moment" and told Kadiri she wanted to take his friend, who is also Nigerian, upstairs. She told how she had to get up and close the door after she saw Kadiri on the stairs watching them. "One or two minutes later" they heard the sound of two people having sex in the spare bedroom. They went to the room and saw Kadiri sitting on the edge of the woman's bed in his boxer shorts. Kadiri, 38, denied rape and claimed his victim had consented to sex. But the jury returned a majority verdict of guilty. Kadiri's name has been placed on the sex offenders' register. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/man-raped-woman-as-she-slept-at-house-in-livingston/ |
How long will one continue to hear this? SYMPATHISERS were moved to tears, weekend as they watched the lifeless body of a 38-year old man, Amidu Olajire, a hunter who reportedly killed himself after his wife abandoned him and their six children. The corpse of the hunter, who was said to have committed suicide by shooting himself with a locally-made gun was discovered around 6.40am on Saturday after unsuccessful attempt by his mother to pacify him over the issue of his runaway wife. The incident happened at Bakatari area of Ibadan, in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State. Some moments after the deceased reportedly left his mother in annoyance, he went straight to his uncompleted building and pulled the trigger of the Dane-gun. It was the sound of the gun that reportedly attracted neighbours but before they could get to him, he was dead, lying in his pool of blood. Speaking on the sad incident, the Chairman, Landlords’ Association of the area, Mr. Mathew Bolaji, who described the incident as “shocking” wondered why the hunter who was popular in the area could commit suicide. According to one of the community leaders in the area, Chief Mukaila Adebayo, he was in his house some minutes before 7am when he heard a booming sound of a gun followed by wailing of people who later told him the hunter had shot himself dead. Vanguard gathered that a long local gun, a bottle of gunpowder and his mobile phone were found at the scene of the incident. Already, policemen from Apata Police Station have taken the remains of the hunter to Adeoyo Hospital and said preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the man killed himself out of frustration. The grandmother of the deceased was quoted as saying that hunter left her around 6.30am after telling her how his wife deserted him with six children. She said: “After expressing his displeasure at the attitude of his wife, I tried to pacify him, not to take laws into his hand. He asked me to take him to a doctor for treatment but I told him that we cannot get any treatment from the doctor because we were still indebted to the hospital. He then left in annoyance saying I would not like what he would do after now. All that I heard was that he had killed himself.” http://naija-online.com/2012/02/38-years-old-man-commits-suicide-after-wife-jilted-him/ |

The python, when it was tendered as exhibit by the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, caused disorder in the court. When it was brought out, lawyers and other litigants panicked. Prosecutor informed the court that they were tired of keeping the snake since the arrest of the suspects last Saturday. The prosecutor, Oladejo Balogun, asked the court to order the police to return the live python to the court’s custody till the next adjourned date, adding that the prosecutor has no accommodation for the snake and does not know the type of food the snake eats. By FESTUS AHON UGHELLI—Two soldiers attached to the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, have died in a motor accident at Okpare-Olomu, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, while chasing suspected armed robbers. The suspected armed robbers, Vanguard gathered, had robbed a petrol station in Ovwor and stopped over at Okpare-Olomu to rob another petrol station, before fleeing through the Olomu bridge. According to a reliable source, the soldiers, who acted on a tip off, chased the robbers to Okpare upon hearing that the dare-devil robbers were robbing another petrol station. The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the soldiers lost control while negotiating a sharp curve in Okpare, close to the bridge, adding that the patrol van somersaulted, leaving the two soldiers dead on the spot. While noting with dismay that the robbers had a field day, the source said the surviving soldiers who sustained severe injuries, were rushed to the hospital for treatment. When contacted, spokesman of the JTF in the Niger Delta, Lt Col Timothy Antiga, confirmed that there was an accident involving soldiers attached to the force. He said: “I cannot confirm if there was any casualty. I cannot also speak on where they were going to or coming from. We are expecting a detailed report on the issue from the commander of the unit the victims were attached to.” At press time, the white Toyota Hilux pick up van in which the soldiers drove was still at the scene of the accident badly damaged. http://naija-online.com/2012/02/2-soldiers-killed-in-auto-crash/ |
By EMMAN OVUAKPORIE ABUJA— MEMBERS of the House of Representatives yesterday urged the Federal Government to commence dredging of River Benue from Lokoja to Jimeta with River Ports at Makurdi in Benue State, Ibi/Lau in Taraba State to ensure socio-economic activities in both zones of the country. This was sequel to a motion brought by Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, representing Yola North/Yola South Girel of Adamawa State, tagged “Need to dredge the River Benue for rapid socio-Economic development.” She had noted that “the Niger and the Benue are the great Nigerian rivers with enormous natural endowment for socio-economic development of Nigeria.” According to her, the 572 kilometres dredging of the lower Niger River from Baro in Niger State to Warri in Delta State has been completed by the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIIWA, and put to commercial use. Ahmed stated that the House was aware that the Federal Government promised that Benue River will also be dredged from Lokoja to Makurdi this year to enhance inland waterways transportation. She said: “To ensure effective inland transportation and business activity throughout the country whatever was done to River Niger should be done to River Benue. The length of dredging of the River Benue should extend beyond Makurdi to serve Numan, Jimeta Yola and terminate at Wuro Bokki. “ She told the House that dredging River Benue would bring about navigation, reduce pressure on roads and vehicles, as well as, boost inter-modal network of transport modes as a barge that could take 300 tons of loads was capable of taking about 15 to 20 trailer loads. Speaker of the House, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal ,had put the motion on a voice vote and the motion was unanimously adopted. The House committee on Marine Transportation was mandated to urgently look into it and submit a report on the issue. The motion was seconded by Mohammed Udeh, who represents Adamawa State.
