After eating chicken here in Egypt, I concluded that what we eat in Nigeria is nothing far from chaff. Their broiler meat is stronger than layers in Nigeria and very cheap. They sell by kg. You can get live chicken of weight 5kg for 170egyptian pounds equivalent to 5270. They go all natural on the Feeding and no supplement. Trust me, in Nigeria, you can’t get it for 10k

Well, to be fair to poultry farmers, the cost of feed in Naija is definitely higher than in Egypt! Besides, the breed of chicken you bought should be what we have here as Noilers. They are kept for much longer periods (up to 6 months); thus they grow denser muscles. Their prices are fair because their economy helps the farmers, and most of their birds come from large-scale poultry farms that keep upto 100k, 1m birds. This actually gives so many advantages that I can't list here

Just leave those who are small scale farmers alone o! You can take such risks with small number of birds but in a farm with over 200,000 layers with a closed housing system. You dare not risk such!
Lastly, not every individual who is called a Vet is truly one. Kindly ask for such persons VCN number.

Thanks. They should take that advice and put it in a 20k poultry farm, and come and tell us the outcome. They should as little as use a vaccine whose coldchain was not properly maintained

Doing my time as an assistant doctor (The Indians are the main doctors) in a very big farm in sw.

We always buy our medicine and vaccines in bulks and we use them timely, both 3days own, 5days own, 7days own etc.
I've worked in Hatchery, Broiler and commercial layers section.

One thing is
It depends on how you wanna rare your broilers

You can rare them for 6 weeks
In our own farm, we rare them 7 - 9 months before selling. And they do buy them in trucks, 10,000birds, 12k, 15k etc

They won't even be able to walk after been well feeded and taken their medicines accordingly.

But you don't have to wait till they get infections before you start treating them.


You think it's easy to monitor water inside tanks for over 100k birds?

We're saying the same thing. Those drugs are necessary, as some are in the written rules of poultry production in Nigeria. You vaccinate on Days 1, 7, 14, and 21; antibiotics from day 1-3 or 5. Some large scale farmers incorporate anticoccidia in the poultry feed (to be administered from day 28; some others do it in their drinking water.

My point? You can almost not completely rule out drugs in poultry farming, but you can reduce the use drastically (and only when necessary) following a good biosecurity. I'm sure you don't allow strangers/other poultry farm owners into your pens. Car tyres are sprayed with disinfectants before they drive into your farms, lizards and wild birds are not allowed to come in contact with your birds and their feed and water, etc. The pens are clean and not foul-smelly, etc.

On issues of monitoring water, you simple get water from a reliable source. Your attendants drink from the water. You also use isochlor and other water sterilizers in your tanks for the birds. 1 tablet sterilizes about 200-1000 liter of water


Ps: you keep your birds for 7-9 week, not months right? I'm sure that was a mistake up there.

You're not yet a pourtry farmer. You have poultry at your backyard. When you become a farmer, you'll employ vets as farm managers to advice you and make your farm work

You made me to calm down. As a vet, I feel insulted when I read things like these. I especially advice poultry farmers to always remember that you're in this business for profit. I practice ECONOMICS OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION. I advice clients to as much as possible, cut their costs on drugs; especially antibiotics. Growth boosters are a complete NO for me.

If you cannot drink the water in your farm, don't give it to your birds (especially layers).

Practice biosecurity, and you have most of the threats eliminated.

You go to most farms, and you can't even drink the bottled water you brought (the whole place stinks like gutter).

Besides, before you give advice, consider a lot of factors. Some of those backyard poultry farmers give anything and everything to their birds; and expect them to grow to 2kg in 7 weeks. See I'm tired

Simple solutions...

1. Don't masturbate on the day you want to have sex with them girls.

2. Relax your mind, and know that even if you last only 1 or 2 minutes, you don't owe any girl or woman 1 hour sex! (Na fúck you fúck; you no kee person).
