You did well for the first time, the challenge is that the cake didn't rise well enough.

I got concerned when I saw oil and butter together, both won't help the cake rise well.

Then what's the quantity of liquid milk added?
That also might have contributed.

Another factor is the heat of the oven.
If it's too hot, it will dry up before the batter gets the opportunity to rise.

Personally, my oven has different temperature for different things even when set at the same level. For example if you turn the knob to 150 for baking, it's not the same temperature with 150 for grilling meat. So the heat needs to be at the right temperature.
To help me with that, I prefer using the pot tightly closed and bake at low heat.

Another issue could be the measurements, if things are not measured rightly it will affect the cake.

Did you sift the flour?
Sifting the flour helps break in the flour molecules and helps it rise in the oven.

One last thing I learnt in pastries was not to use long stored flour in anything that should rise except Chin chin.
Anytime I want to bake, I buy the quantity of flour I need that I don't have to store.

Thank you for your efforts. It will still taste nice but not fluffy.
So many lessons. It's been over a year I baked, so it felt like I was learning afresh. I'll try to bake more often.

That oil plus butter... I'll jejely just pick one.

Milk, I used 1 cup

Flour was sifted,, but I didn't sift the baking powder. I thought there was no need for it.

I used electric oven, and both the top and bottom heating elements were on... So the cake was getting heat from top and bottom. I did 180° or so for 35mins. I'll try just the bottom heat elements for my next bake, at 180°... Lemme see how it goes.

Thanks for the review, it really feels good cooking for the family. One of my boys has been singing my praises, he called his uncle who came visiting... His words "Uncle come, my daddy baked cake for us". Omo.... My heard swell small. I'll remember to keep getting better. Thanks again

Did you measure the ingredients correctly?
The first rule to baking a (near) perfect cake is measuring the ingredients correctly.

You tried though.
My measurements were okay. I think the oven heat was too high, and I left it for a bit too long.

Madam said the butter I added distorted my measurements; well, I shouldn't have added bitter. Lessons taken... I'll do way better next time

Cake is ready, and I got just what I wanted

FoodRe: I'm Baking A Cake Today by wehdone(op): 2:47pm On Nov 13, 2022
Sorry gloryhomemaker, I couldn't cope with the pot; I didn't know how to cope with the low heat. So, I took the pan and transferred it to the oven instead. I reduced the heat this time to 150° from 170° I used the first time

I saw this post yesterday, and I decided to emulate @Gloryhomemaker

https://www.nairaland.com/7135389/making-cake-blender-no-oven

I was excited because the procedures looked simplified. Besides, I have most of the ingredients at home, so why not?

The idea of using a blender seemed genius, so I decided to try it out. I mixed double of the ingredients she listed, so I'll use the electri oven for a portion, and pot for the other portion.

I didn't use baking soda, and I used nutmeg in addition to other ingredients.

**I didn't get the thickness I preferred, so I added some butter

4 Eggs
1/2 Soya oil
1 Sugar
Butter

People displaying their food on social media only tells me one thing. There is poverty in Nigeria , they few people that can afford to get some foods on the table can’t wait to announce it to the world.
Lol... I didn't mean to make a philosopher out of anyone. No reason am ooo. If people start to announce food here, you no go see space read other news on social media. Poverty or not, Nigerians love food, and they eat very good foods!

Some people post it to attract customers, some others do it for the fun. I did it to encourage other men to help their wives once in a while; and women to remember to teach their sons how to cook. It might come handy in future.

This statement doesn't make sense. Your wife is Nigerian just like your mother and sisters, and there's nothing atypical about them. If they're great people, it's because Nigeria is diverse and has both the good and the bad. You can't praise your woman and trash her identity in the same sentence. I thought a married man should know better than to join nairaland teenagers in bashing thier mothers and sisters.
Sorry bro if you are offended. But you see my wife ba... I've not seen another 2 people like her. She's an atypical Naija woman; even my sisters no reach her. No vex ooo... But my wife type no reach 2 again for market

1. All her salaries she's ever earned, I contribute on how it's spent. And I mean ALL! (Her last salary was almost 150k). Abeg how many women still de do this one?

2. My home is so clean, I beg her to allow it get dirty sometimes (but will she ever agree?). No plates stay dirty till day break!

3. The day we have only 500 cash, she use it like that and still make sumptuous meals (the foods are always delicious). I believe say God bless me more because of her.

This is someone that almost saved up our house rent from the money I give her for home upkeep ooo... I shock the day she told me about the money. Even my mom would have bought wrapper; my sister would have bought shoes and bags. Some other women might have bought make-up and human hair. Na only very very few women go give you that money. My wife and maybe 2 or 3 other women.

See bro, I can't even talk so many qualities here; let's just say she's an atypical Naija woman. Thank you
