Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), says there isn't any progress in the country because our leaders are "sick" and they are using our future and destinies for rituals.

He therefore warned Nigerians that they cannot afford "another four years of hunger, poverty and suffering".

He called on the people to ensure active participation in the 2019 general election in order to bring an end to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country.

He stated this on Thursday, when he campaigned in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, as part of his party's activities in the build-up to the 2019 general election.

Speaking on the need to usher in a new administration, he said: “We have been oppressed for years; your resources have been looted for years. There has been hunger, poverty and suffering in this country for years. You have to stop voting for the heavy weight parties so that they won’t continue to give heavy weight punishment to our people.

"We want to put an end to the government of PDP, APC. We have to stop voting for PDP and APC because that are giving us heavy duty of hunger, starvation and poverty. We want you to have a country where you can send your children to school, not to be hired as political thugs. That is why our party AAC is here to encourage you to take your country back next year.

"We cannot wait for another four years of suffering in this country. We cannot wait for another four years of sickness for our people. Our leaders are sick; our leaders are using our future and destinies for rituals that is why there isn't any progress. But we can say with fresh ideas, we can make this country a fantastic country, to make Nigeria to start working like a country. Ghana, Rwanda and South Africa are not better than Nigeria. Nigeria should be compared with Brazil, South Korea, Malaysia and the rest, but the suffering is too much. In Nigeria, APC (Association of Poverty Congress) and PDP (Papa Deceiving Pikin). The suffering they are imposing on us is too much; the money that should be used to send our children to school and to build hospitals has been squandered.

“Vote for our party so that this will be state of progress and not poverty, problem or hardship state. We want a situation where you will be able to send your children to school. Our minimum wage is not N30,000, it is going to be N100,000. If your children did not go to school, we promise to give them free education. Anyone who does not have job, we are going to provide them jobs; not that you will be an oil-producing state and it will be a white man that will be exploring the oil. Any of your children who is a graduate will work in our company.

"Do not vote for N500 or N5,000 again, because if you divide N5,000 in four years, what will be your gain? The rest of it will be hunger and poverty. Our religion is not Islam or Christianity. It is hunger and poverty that is our religion. How can we survive if we are unable to change the government that destroyed us? Vote for me so that I can drive away the ‘Baba’ that is in Daura also Atiku, so that we can have a Nigerian who has fresh ideas."

He also spoke on his plans to ensure economic development, such that will affect people across all sectors and at all levels.

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has taken his campaign to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Addressing a crowd at The Plaza in Uyo on Monday, Sowore urged the people of Uyo and Nigerians not to vote for those who have destroyed the country and now parade themselves as the “messiah”.

Speaking on the need to vote out leaders who don’t have the best interest of the country at heart, Sowore said: “It is time to vote for the right candidate and to stop voting for ancestors interested in ruling Nigeria forever. It is time for young people with fresh ideas to rule this country. We are tired of old people who are recycling themselves. They have governed this country for 58 years.

“They’ve given ignorance instead of education; sickness instead of health; unemployment in place of jobs; poverty in place of wealth. I’m standing in front of you with capability, full of intellectuality, character and integrity. I’m not one of them who steal.”

Speaking further, Sowore, who is also the publisher of SaharaReporters, said the old politicians were able to capture the votes of people over the past years by giving them stipends during campaign and they believe it’s not time to be liberated. He implored then to say ‘no’ to vote-buying this time.

He continued: “They said that the people of Nigeria are not ready to be freed, that our destiny will be tied to the N4,000 cycle. But we are saying ‘no’ to that; ‘no’ to those who destroyed Nigeria and destroy it the more. They have killed all the industries and they are promising that if they come back again they are going to sell all.

“I have been fighting for the liberation of Nigeria for 30 years; enough is enough. We are tired of idiots and fools ruling this country. We are tired of people being ruled without certificates. When people who graduated from university don’t have jobs, people who do not go to school are becoming President. It is time for an educated person to become the President of Nigeria.


I don’t have money to distribute but I have the ideas to give you, because that will be the new currency in this country. Instead of funding lazy senators, we will fund our students. Instead of funding the armed robbers of the House of Representatives, we want to invest in our children.

“We want to turn Akwa-Ibom into a touristic centre where two million of people will be coming to visit. It is no longer going to be an oil-spillage state again and a place where politicians will lie to you that they’ve built a world-class hospital and when they are sick, they travel out to treat themselves.

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), has called on the Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) to include Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the presidential debate scheduled for January 2019.

NEDG and BON had issued a statement on Tuesday, noting that only five political parties — Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP) — would participate in the presidential debate scheduled to hold on January 19, 2019.

Making her comments on the subject, she tweeted: “As a country with huge contingent of parties fielding candidates for election, it does make sense to at least allow more than five such parties, at least 25 per cent of those candidates, to participate in the most influential of presidential debates. #PresidentialDebates

“I especially want to see a candidate like @YeleSowore whose AAC has been diligent in crisscrossing universities to awaken our young to engage in our politics.

Omoyele Sowore, presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), continued his campaign on Monday, December 3, 2018 in Enugu.

A crowd held him 'hostage' just after the grassroots campaign at Enugu main market premises, as he was compelled to address the crowd.

In his address, he assured the people of his determination to lift Nigeria from economic and political underdevelopment. He also expressed his displeasure with how the government under PDP and APC have looted the country.

"We have come here today to inform the good people of Enugu State that you should change the change in 2019. Vote for a new candidate; a young person that is capable with vision and mission for Nigeria so that he can change the future of this country. Our economy is down and we are ready to reinvigorate it," he said.

He spoke on the APC's ‘Next Level’ stating that “Don’t vote ‘Next Level’; it's a scam. Vote for the highest level".

“We are taking back our country in February 2019 from the people who have destroyed and looted Nigeria, to young people who have ideas, because ideas must become the new currency and politics in Nigeria. This is the reason we are here in Enugu.

“We appreciate the people of Enugu for your help is on the way. Vote for African Action Congress. Don’t ever vote for APC and PDP because they are killers,” he concluded.

Sowore had embarked on a week-long campaign tour of Northern Nigeria. He has been to states like Sokoto, Jigawa, Kano, Kastina among others, where also met with young people, who represent not less than 60 per cent of Nigeria's voting population.

It initially started out as 44. Then 100, then ‘more than 100’. And now 118. There is even a chance it could, when all is said and done, end up more than 200. In the end, the truth is somewhere in between. In an attack that ranks among the deadliest this year, Boko Haram downed scores of soldiers in Metele, Borno State, on November 18.

With the benefit of hindsight, we now know the insurgents lurked around for the Army to dispatch a team to retrieve its killed or injured men. When that rescue, treatment and evacuation team arrived in Metele, the insurgents struck again. Among the victims of that first raid are five officers, including a Lieutenant-Colonel; and from the second raid, the fallen include the Major who led the rescue team.

The latest attack is a continuation of Boko Haram’s newfound confidence to take the battle to military zones in recent months, often yielding high casualty tolls. The past few days have been truly difficult for the political neutrals. The social media has been awash with mourning and gnashing of teeth, not only by the opposition, as the government and the Army are wont to always believe, but by those genuinely concerned about the failure of two governments running to pocket Boko Haram. This grand-scale attack has happened despite repeated government assurances of “decimating” and “technically defeating” the insurgents. So, the question goes: why, and three years after electing a Major-General as President, can Boko Haram so easily overrun hundreds of soldiers in one fell swoop?

As I have previously written, the Army is indeed waging a war against Boko Haram — not with weapons but with propaganda. In its trademark downplaying of its own casualties and exaggerating the insurgents’, the Army attempted to sweep the Metele attack under the carpet. And despite its protestations over the so-called “well-doctored” reports by the media, the Army has, after eight days, refrained from making definitive remarks about the attack, particularly the casualty on its side. A war that thrives on misleading the public, ostensibly including the President and Commander-in-Chief, is doomed to fail.

So is a war steeped in hypocrisy. Two soldiers who survived the Metele attack, and are set to desert the Army, released a now-viral video of the post-attack ruins. Laden with anger, frustration and despair, it is a video that should humble every true Nigerian patriot. It is a video that President Muhammadu Buhari — if his advisers have any idea what they’re doing — should have seen and self-analysed by now. But the shocking response of the Army has been to brand members of the public as “detractors or tacit supporters of the enemies of our beloved country” and to threaten them with court suits. This type of sickening hypocrisy should not be judged just on its face value but on its implications for decision-taking in the highest recesses of the Army. It is the same type of hypocrisy that caused Alex Badeh, as Chief of Army Staff in January 2015, to say soldiers cannot say they’re not well-equipped when they have a rifle, only for him to claim, at his pull-out ceremony six months later, that he was “head of a military that lacked the relevant equipment and motivation to fight an enemy that was invisible and embedded with the local populace”. Badeh had already rendered himself an accomplice to the damage that had been done. Unfortunately, this same strategy of misleading the government and the people has been adopted by the current Army hierarchy. Boko Haram can only be the beneficiary.

Everyone knows the most important move that must be made to whittle down Boko Haram’s powers. The foot soldiers know; the senior officers do. Even the insurgents themselves know. I found out in June 2016. During an undercover trip to the North-East in June of that year, I was in a hospital where a soldier receiving treatment for a gunshot injury was recalling events on the battlefield to his colleagues. He was one of 15 soldiers who ran into 18 insurgents in Kala Balge, the easternmost local government area of Borno, very close to Cameroon, on April 30, 2016. While the insurgents came in six motorcycles and carried a mortar Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) and a General-Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), the soldiers had only their trucks and their 1949-made Kalashnikov (AK-47) rifles. Still, it was the insurgents who took to their heels while the soldiers chased on with their trucks. One by one, the soldiers killed the insurgents until only two were left. Then they ran out of ammo. Tables suddenly turned, and the hunter became the hunted.

“When our ammo finished, we were looking at them and they were looking at us,” the soldier recalled. “We were about boarding the truck when three of us were fired at the same time with a GPMG.” In all, six of the soldiers were shot. I remember that soldier was filled with optimism about how Buhari’s coming would strengthen the weaponry of the Army. If that soldier is still alive — he promised to return to the field once his leg healed up — he must feel let down the coming of Buhari hasn’t altered the balance of weapons between soldiers and insurgents.

Much as it hurts to say, Boko Haram will continue killing soldiers. I have met quite a number of Nigerian soldiers involved in the counter-insurgency operations, and my conviction is that they are some of the bravest soldiers available anywhere in the world. However, if we’re stuck with fighting Boko Haram with weapons that are older than Nigeria itself (the AK-47 was made 11 years before Nigeria’s Independence), then our soldiers have no chance. No serious military should still be parading the T-12 in this age. This was a tank made between 1925 and 1931, and they are prone to mechanical failures; the soldiers in that video weren’t lying. As they said, Buhari must “interfere” in this matter. This is beyond intervening, the President, as the C-in-C should ‘interfere’ with the operations of the Military same way he does with the petroleum industry. At the very least, it’s time to establish the correlation between the Army’s armoury and the funds recently invested in this war. Until such a time when that gap is closed, expect high casualties on the Army’s side, from time to time.

The political fund-raiser inaugurated on GoFundMe by the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has generated $97, 226 out of the $2m mark.

The amount was raised by 1,168 people in eight months, the site says.

Omoyele had told his audience that if 10,000 Nigerians and friends of Nigeria could each donate $200, the goal would be reached. However, the donations, so far, range from five dollars (lowest) to $650 (highest).

GoFundMe is an online fund-raiser platform. It situates Sowore’s location as New York City.

Sowore, who is contesting the presidency with the slogan, ‘Take Back Nigeria Movement,’ said he inaugurated the online platform “to raise funds via a clean, transparent and open manner.”

He had written, “Nigerian People! Our goal is to raise $2 million via a clean, transparent and open manner in order to advance our movement and fund our election into the Presidency without the interference of Godfathers and Godmothers.”

As more people showed interest, they also tweeted and shared the appeal on social media handles, while Sowore intimated donors and other stakeholders of the fund-raiser progress.

As the money came pouring in, Sowore derided those he called “political elites,” saying, they “are already shaking in their boots, realising that their choke-hold on Nigeria’s destiny of greatness is about to end.”

He also intimated his ‘constituency’ of the activities of his party. “We have done major town halls that have reached millions of people across Nigeria and beyond.

“These Nigerians are desirous of a complete sanitisation of the political order in Nigeria,” he said.

In the last update on his fund solicitation platform 16 days ago, Sowore discussed his vice presidential candidate, one Dr. Rabiu Ahmed Rufai.

As President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar launched their presidential campaigns Sunday and Monday respectively, two of their rivals have warned against choosing either of the two veterans.
Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC) and Oby Ezekwesili of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) described the two front runners as failed participants in Nigeria’s democratic history.
According to a statement on Monday, Mr Sowore spoke while addressing Nigerians in Diaspora at a town hall meeting and fundraiser organised by his campaign group, #TakeItBack Movement, at the Christ International Community Church, Columbus, Ohio, United States of America.
He warned Nigerians to be cautious of the “fake promises and documents which will be used by some candidates to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians.
Mr Sowore, who is seeking elective office for the first time in Nigeria, said as the campaigns start officially, he would allow the opposition lead while he catches up when he returns to Nigeria.
“Today in Nigeria is the beginning of the campaigns for the elections that will be happening next year…I am supposed to be back home but the truth is we are dealing with two old men if we are going to start the race is better to let them start first and when I return to Nigeria I can always catch up,” Mr Sowore said.
He urged Nigerians to be wise in their choice because the leaders who have put many Nigerians in pains are the same clamouring for their votes.
”They did an event and launched what they called Next Level, but Nigerians are very creative people who can see through all that, they have already done a lot of cartoons which shows President Buhari Blindfolded and his followers following to fall over a cliff and they said that is the Next Level.
”They said the same thing about Atiku with a cartoon where everyone following him was holding on to their wallets, you know what that means.
“Those who are positioning themselves to lead Nigerians today, are the same people who caused Nigerians pains and sorrow that Nigeria is in today,” he said.
Mr Sowore urged Nigerians “do the right thing by freeing yourselves of your oppressors who have no fresh ideas or capacity to solve Nigeria’s problems which they created.”


Mrs Ezekwesili also spoke on Monday but in Abuja, urging Nigerians not to resign to low standards by voting for parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC).
She said the mistakes of previous PDP administrations were being repeated by President Buhari of the APC.
“Sometimes it is hard to believe Nigeria’s greatness in the midst of our daily struggles, and as we watch our country repeat the same mistakes over and over again, it is hard to remember the contributions our country has made for freedom and peace across the African continent,” Mrs Ezekwisili said.
“I cannot stand it when we choose to accept mediocrity or resign ourselves to lowly standards. Nigeria can do much better. I care about Nigeria and Nigerians enough to know that the back-to-back failed leadership has held us back for far too long, and if we do not take a stand and take our country back, they would still be here in years to come, holding back our children and their children. God forbid!”
The former Minister of Education assured Nigerians she would fulfill her electoral promises, adding that a situation where elected candidates deny their promises was bad for Nigeria’s growth.
“The APC campaigned in 2015 on a manifesto that propagated the doctrine of restructuring. President Buhari went along with it every step of the way because it is all about getting into power for him.
”He won and then began to renege on his promises, including on restructuring. He suddenly remembered all the reasons why ‘structure is not the problem’ with Nigeria.
“I want to reignite belief in Nigeria’s greatness by leading a government that would make clear promises to citizens and deliver on them, not like the current leadership which spent its first year in office denying all the promises it made to get into that office,” she said.
She furthered accused Mr Buhari of placing a lesser value on the lives of Nigerians, warning that Nigerians need to vote for a candidate who would make their well-being a priority.
The former Vice-President of World Bank explained that Nigeria’s current federal structure was not working and recommended a review.


“Entire communities and even local government areas in this country have been driven into hunger and poverty, as their sources of livelihoods are completely wiped out due to insecurity. The value of a Nigerian life has been devalued and cheapened,” she said.
“The structure of a federation is its skeleton. A functional structure gives shape, support, and aids the movement of the federation. No wonder Nigeria is handicapped under this dysfunctional structure,” she said.
She recalled that the APC before the last elections agreed on the need to restructure the federation and devolve more powers to the regions and states. She added

SaharaReporters learnt that Mimiko would, any moment from now, announce his ambition to contest as the candidate of ZLP for Ondo Central Senatorial District for the 2019 general election.

A source in the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) confirmed this to our correspondent, saying Mimiko made tha about-face after an inner caucus meeting of members of his "think tank".

"It's true, Iroko (Mimiko) is no longer vying for the presidential seat again because he has decided to change his mind by making u-turn after our meeting," said the source.

"He now prefers to contest for the Senate seat and would now be the candidate of our party for the Ondo Central Senatorial District."

Although, Gboye Adegbenro, the Commissioner for Works during the tenure of Mimiko, had also been gunning for same position under the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

It was gathered that Adegbenro's name had already been enlisted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a candidate of Ondo Central Senatorial District.

A source told SaharaReporters via the phone that the sudden u-turn of Mimiko had also changed the political calculations in the camp of Adegbenro.

"This same Gboye Adegbenro who was the Commissioner for Works during Mimiko's government got his blessings to contest as candidate of the ZLP for this same Ondo Central Senatorial District.

"It is unfortunate that Iroko [Mimiko] cannot change his skin, just like a leopard. He has again dribbled us and we know what to do next."

The Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation has offered the spokesman of the Muhammadu Buhari campaign team a free two-week crash course on how to run an "issue-based campaign that is guided by civility and refined language".

A statement issued by Atiku's team on Wednesday said the offer was in the light of conflicting statements by the President's campaign office.

"Just last week, our attention was drawn to a statement by the All Progressives Congress falsely accusing the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party of attempting to smuggle in large sums of money into the nation for the purpose of funding his campaign," read the statement.

"In the said statement from November 5, 2018, the APC called for security agents to be on the watch to prevent the imaginary ‘illicit cash’ from entering Nigeria. Thus, we are surprised that the same APC which made that false allegation has made a 180-degree turn by releasing a new statement contradicting their earlier statement and alleging that the former Vice President is broke.

"In their statement, they contend that ‘Atiku Abubakar is at a crossroads on how to source funds for the 2019 electioneering campaign'. Our response is to urge the APC to make up its mind on which lie it wants to tell the Nigerian people and then stick to that lie. As a party in power, there ought to be more stability in the APC at least to give the public and the international community some assurance that the party is not imploding. No wonder there is a lot of policy flip flop under the APC administration!

"We know that the APC is desperate to distract attention from the recent indictment of Vice President Osinbajo by the House of Representatives for Grand corruption and the interrogation of their chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, by the Department of State Security on charges of collecting huge bribes to influence party primaries. Given the sordid state of things in the APC and its imminent implosion over money politics, we are not surprised that the APC is throwing wild allegations at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the hope that something will stick.

"Our advice to the APC is that they should send their spokesman to the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation for a two weeks crash course on how to run an issue-based campaign that is guided by civility and refined language.

"While the APC is throwing about baseless accusations, our candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is set to launch tangible policies that will Get Nigeria Working Again in the next week. The United States yesterday shed light on why Nigeria must get it right in the 2019 general election, stating categorically that if the country fails to conduct credible polls, the democratic process in Africa might fail.

Specifically, the US government said it was interested in the democratic process in Nigeria because of the country’s strategic nature of being the largest population and economy in Africa.

Speaking after a dinner with the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakubu, at the US Ambassador’s residence, the US assistant secretary of state for African Affairs, Ambassador Tibor P. Nagy (Jr), said Nigeria must serve as an example to the African continent.

“The state should be neutral,” Tibor said, referring to the Nigerian government, even as he added that “US views the election as very important”.

“Nigeria has the largest population and economy. They should be an example of how elections should be conducted,” he said.

Noting that the US government knows the difficulties the electoral umpire might be facing, Tibor stated, however, that America also knows that INEC is up to the task.

“We heard him,” Tibor said, referring to the discussion they had with INEC chairman during the dinner.

While calling political parties to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner before, during and after the elections, Tibor said all political parties and candidates must advise their followers to be non-violent.

“We thank you for the difficult work you are doing,” the assistant secretary of state told The INEC boss, just as he observed that each election had its own criteria for assessments.

He explained that the frequent statements issued by the US government about Nigeria’s 2019 general election only seek a transparent process.

“Election is not about the election day. It’s like preparing for a feast”, Tibor said, adding that critical elements must be addressed to get a credible election.

He further said the US government had been involved in the electoral process in Nigeria, with particular interest in the transparency.

On his part, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, said America had a candidate in every election in the world.

“The transparent process is our candidate,” Stuart said, referring to that country’s involvement in the Nigeria’s elections, which he described as critical and important.

“What happens to Nigeria is significant to Africa and the world. That is why we have been organising meetings with the Nigerian officials,” he said.

According to Stuart, Nigeria is coming up democratically, which is why US cares so much about the country.

“We care so much about Nigeria,” the ambassador said, adding that during a visit to one of the states in Nigeria, he was impressed that the voter register was displayed for all Nigerians to see.

In his response, the INEC chairman, Yakubu, assured the US envoy that the commission would improve on the conduct of the 2015 general election.

“INEC is pleased with what the US is doing because they are the first, while Nigeria is second largest in democracy. This (2019 polls) will be an affirmation. We have 99 days to the general election. The election will be fair and credible,” Yakubu said, adding that the commission would follow all the processes.

On what the commission had put in place to ensure credible elections, Yakubu said since his appointment as INEC chairman, he had conducted over 190 elections.

According to him, the electoral process had improved both in transparency, planning and logistics, adding that INEC was committed to protecting the integrity of the election process.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that Nigeria will come out of the 2019 general election stronger.

According to the president, the nation had been able to weather the storm over the years only because of God’s intervention.

Buhari, who spoke at the annual breakfast prayer session organised by the National Assembly Christian legislators’ prayer breakfast fellowship, said in spite of doomsday prophesies, the country is tackling its problems and becoming more prosperous.

He pointed out that while doomsday prophets had prophesied that the country would plunge into crisis, the Nigeria would witness a great rebirth in 2019, especially after the polls, which many unpatriotic critics had predicted would be crisis-ridden.

In his goodwill message at the occasion, Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said that Nigeria can overcome her numerous challenges through constant prayers.

Dogara stated that through collective prayers, Nigerians can change the narrative and the destiny of the country.

In his sermon, the guest speaker, Apostle Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, said that God is at the verge of raising godly leaders for the country.

Drawing inspiration and reference from biblical quotations, particularly Isaiah 40:46, Jeremiah 33:25, 2nd Chronicles 20:35-37 and Joshua 10:1-9, he said political leaders must desist from making uncomplimentary statements about the polity.

The Director-General Brigadier-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Suleiman Kazaure, has advised corps members that will be deployed for 2019 general elections against stopping politicians from snatching materials.

Addressing corps members yesterday at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Darkingari, Kebbi State, Kazaure advised:”If politicians want to snatch election materials from you, don’t drag issues with them. Help them carry it to their vehicle to avoid problems”.

He also warned corps members against bribe taking during the elections, saying “You are not covered by any immunity; anybody caught violating the Electoral Act is going to face the full wrath of the law”.

Kazaure, who was represented by a deputy director at the Evaluation Department of the NYSC Headquarters, Mrs Victoria Ango, also told the corps members: “You are the future leaders. So, don’t lose your life for politicians.

He said the NYSC had assisted in the successful conduct of elections across the country; while the election security committee had ensured corps members’ safety.

He said the scheme had set up a security committee to come up with mechanisms to monitor corps members during elections.

He said: “INEC will also train corps members on how to discharge their electoral duties during the polls”.

NYSC State Coordinator Mr Usman Barde commended corps members for complying with camp rules and regulations.

ohn Agim, spokesman of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has told members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), to be ready to face the consequences if they take on the military.

Members of the movement better known as Shi’ites clashed with soldiers in some parts of Abuja last week.

The Army confirmed that three Shi’ites were killed, while four soldiers sustained injuries. But the group declared 1,000 of its members missing.

Speaking in an interview with Osasu Igbinedion on The Osasu Show, Agim denied allegations that the military was sent to disrupt the procession of the movement, saying those accusing the military wanted to paint it bad.

“There are different narratives out there that are not correct. It is not true that the military is being used to stop the Shi’ites from their normal procession.

“Right from 2015, we have been hearing about the issue of Shi’ites and the military. It has never been that the military was sent to stop whatever thing they are doing.

“The problem emanates from the philosophy that guide the movement. The clash that you see, in fact three times now, is that the Shi’ites obstruct the military from doing their job. They are a law unto themselves. They do anything.

“They are supposed to be a religious organisation. Where did they get those arms and ammunition? This was how Boko Haram started, in fact, it was not even as serious as this. The narrative is being given by an international community and it is very simple. They want to make the military look unprofessional.

“They have the right to protest. But when you protest, protest lawfully. Anybody that does not obey the laws of the land should be sanctioned,” Agim said.

Asked why the Shiites are asked to obey the law, while the federal government has refused to obey the court order to release Zakzaky, Agim said: “So they are attacking the military to show their dissatisfaction with the government? Then they should be ready for the consequence.

“We don’t have rubber bullets when we are sent on assignments. So, if any organisation that is not happy with the government want to take on the military, then they should be ready for the consequence.

“Whatever the problem of the Shi’ites with the federal government, let them take it constitutionally. You take on any military in the world and you will be taken down.”

United States President Donald Trump had announced plans to revoke citizenship rights for children born to non-natives on American soil.

According to Washington Post, Trump revealed this in a television interview taped on Monday.

During an interview with Axios scheduled to air as part of a new HBO series starting this weekend, Trump was quoted as saying: "We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits. It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.”

However, for thousands of foreigners who desire American residency for their children, according to the provision of the US Constitution, a "baby on the way" is enough reason to get citizenship for such children.

Research also shows that in 1965, the US Congress passed the Immigration Act. When read with the 14th Amendment, babies born on US soil have automatic American citizenship, whether or not their parents are in the country illegally.

However, in the attempt to gain citizenship for their children through birth, it is not unusual to find people embracing immigration fraud, exploiting the health care system and in some cases, place the lives of the unborn children in jeopardy. Varying motivations fuel the race to have children on American soil and Nigerians are not excluded in this regard.

Dr. Fola Adebowale, who is a healthcare consultant at 1st Recon Healthcare Centre, Lagos refuted the claim that better health care facilities constitute the main motivation for many parents seeking to have children within US confines.

According to Adebowale, Nigeria boasts of standard facilities, just as is available in America.

He said: “There are actually a lot of quality standard facilities that people have invested millions of Naira in, and those that can afford it can actually give birth there. But it is somehow like a socio-cultural trend to want to go and deliver in the US. It is not as if there are no facilities here.

“For example in Abuja, there is a kidney specialist hospital and if I’m going to value that hospital, it will be nothing less than N2 billion and because of the huge investment, it might not be affordable for the majority. However, the few elite that can afford such treatment still prefer to go outside the country to benefit from similar facilities.

“Even the people that want to invest heavily in the health sector will be discouraged that those that can afford it will go abroad. It is not encouraging.

"The reason they go there is not about getting quality health facilities and care. It is a socio-cultural thing so that the child can become a citizen and they believe it is the right footing to secure the child’s future."

However, Nigerians have also taken to social media to respond to the declaration by Donald Trump.

Chidiebere Nwobodo wrote: "I love Donald Trump. No one will mess up this country and take his wife to America to give birth to make his children American citizens again. Everyone must stay home and fix this mess of a country we found ourselves in. My wife doesn't need to have our kids in the US for their future to be 'secured'. We should stop consuming abroad what we cannot afford in our own nation."

Legal scholars have countered Trump's move, as it runs against the provision of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside".

However, contrary to Trump's claim that only the US offers birthright citizenship, NumbersUSA, a group that reports migration-related issues, listed at least 30 countries offering same.

The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has granted leave to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to seek its reliefs to compel the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), to account for power-sector spending.

Hon. Justice C.J. Aneke granted SERAP the leave as prayed to seek judicial review and order of mandamus to compel Fashola to act over the “failure to account for the spending on the privatisation of the electricity sector and the exact amount of post-privatisation spending on generation companies (GENCOS), distribution companies (DISCOS) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to date, and to explain if such spending came from budgetary allocations or other sources.”

Justice Aneke granted the order for leave following the hearing of an argument in court on an ex parte motion by SERAP's counsel, Ms Bamisope Adeyanju. While adjourning the matter to Tuesday November 20, 2018, for mention. the court also ruled that Fashola be put on notice.

In June, SERAP had sued Fashola in suit number FHC/L/CS/972/18 at the Federal High Court, seeking “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing and/or compelling Mr Fashola to provide specific detailson the privatization of the electricity sector, the names of all the companies and individuals involved; and to publish widely including on a dedicated website any such information.”

The suit followed SERAP’s Freedom of Information request dated May 7, 2018, to Fashola, giving him 14 days to provide “information on the status of implementation of the 25-year national energy development plan, and whether the Code of Ethics of the privatization process, which bars staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and members of the National Council on Privatization (NCP) from buying shares in companies being privatized, were deliberately flouted.”

The suit read in part: “Most of the companies that won the bids had no prior experience in the power sector and little or no capacity at all to manage the sector. The privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has yielded the country total darkness. The gains of privatization have been lost through alleged corruption, manipulation of rules and disregard to extant laws and lack of transparency in the exercise.

“The Goodluck Jonathan government reportedly spent over N400 billion on the power sector while the present government spent over N500 billion on the sector despite privatisation. It is unclear if this spending is drawn from budgetary allocations and if these are loans to generation companies (GENCOS), Distribution companies (DISCOS) and Transmission Company of Nigeria.

“Publishing the information requested and making it widely available to the public would serve the public interest and provide insights relevant to the public debate on the ongoing efforts to prevent and combat a culture of mismanagement of public funds, corruption and impunity of perpetrators.

“To further highlight the seriousness of the situation, several years after the country’s power sector was privatized, millions of Nigerian households particularly the socially and economically vulnerable sectors of the population continue to complain about outrageous bills for electricity not consumed, and poor power supply from distribution firms. Millions of Nigerians continue to be exploited through the use of patently illegal estimated billing by DISCOs. One wonders the essence of the privatization if there has been no corresponding improvement in power for Nigerians.”

“Enforcing the right to truth would allow Nigerians to gain access to information essential to the fight against corruption and provide a form of reparation to victims of grand corruption in the power sector. The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in its General Comment 3 has implied that privatization process should not be detrimental to the effective realization of all human rights, including access to regular electricity supply.

"SERAP has the right to request the information under contention on the basis of several provisions of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011. By Section (1) of the FoI Act, SERAP is entitled as of right to request for or gain access to information, including information on post-privatization spending by the Federal Government and accounts of spending on the private entities such asGENCOS and DISCOS.”

The suit is seeking the following reliefs:

"A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to furnish the Applicant with information on specific details on the spending on the privatization of the electricity sector, the exact amount of post-privatization spending to date and the names of all the companies and individuals involved, as well as explain if such spending came from budgetary allocations or other sources, is unlawful as it contradicts and in conflict with the obligations of the Respondent under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

"A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to furnish the Applicant with information on the details of spending on and status of implementation of the twenty-five (25) year national energy development plan is unlawful as it contradicts and in conflict with the obligations of the Respondent under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

"A DECLARATION that the failure of the Respondent to clarify to the Applicant the degree of compliance with the Code of Ethics of the privatization process which bars staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and members of the National Council on Privatization (NCP) from buying shares in companies being privatized is unlawful as it contradicts and in conflict with the obligations of the Respondent under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

"AN ORDER OF MANDAMUS directing and/or compelling the Respondent to furnish the Applicant with information on specific details of spending on the privatization of the electricity sector, the exact amount of post-privatization spending to date and the names of all the companies and individuals involved; as well as to explain if such spending came from budgetary allocations or other sources, and to publish widely including on a dedicated website any such information.

"AN ORDER OF MANDAMUS directing and/or compelling the Respondent to furnish the Applicant with information on the details of spending and status of implementation of the twenty-five (25) year national energy development plan, and to publish widely including on a dedicated website any such information.

"AN ORDER OF MANDAMUS directing and/or compelling the Respondent to clarify the degree of compliance with the Code of Ethics of the privatization process, which bars staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and members of the National Council on Privatization (NCP) from buying shares in companies being privatized.

"The privatization of power assets has already caused major crises, ranging from illiquidity, load rejection, metering problems, corrupt practices, lack of gas to power the stations, disinterestedness of investors, lack of injection of fresh capital after acquisition of financing, tariff interest, consumer apathy, foreign exchange hostilities, and a host of other sundry issues associated with it.”
