Your answer “anyone who had that sort of followership would be desperate to try their luck” would make sense if and only if the person was talking about/asking what led Obi to be so desperate. He expressly said that Obi was desperate. They are two very different things.
If he had asked for the reason why Obi was so desperate, then the right answer could be something like: “ he’s desperate because he enjoyed a cult-like followership he never dreamed of getting and anyone who gets that level of popularity within that short period would surely be desperate to try his luck” Notice how that answer didn’t debate his being desperate? Saying he’s not entirely desperate means you have something contrary to the allegation. Also, with that example I gave above, you are not saying he’s not desperate/only partially desperate but that he was motivated by the popularity he got, ultimately answering the question he asked. I.e what motivated him to be so desperate.
You could as well say he’s not desperate and that his actions were borne out of love and compassion for the masses. With that, you’re completely dismissing the commenter’s standpoint that Obi was being moved/motivated by desperation.
