The American soldiers were mostly killed by Taliban terrorists hiding in the midst of civilians and if it was total invasion, there would be no reason for the deployment of ground troops to look for terrorists in the midst of ordinary civilians. Instead of going down to selectively kill the terrorists amongst them, they would have simply wiped out the whole country from the air before deploying ground troops to finish off the job.
