As Nigerians continue to lament the impacts of flooding across the country, the federal government has said the country was not yet out of the wood, disclosing that five states are still at risk of experiencing flooding up to November, this year. This came as it disclosed that the natural disaster claimed 603 lives, affected 2,504,095 persons and displaced 1,302,589 persons across the country. Similarly, the government disclosed that the disaster injured 2,407 persons, partially damaged 121,318 houses, totally damaged 82,053 houses, partially damaged 108,392 hectares of farmlands and totally damaged 332,327 hectares of farmlands, all across Nigeria. The government which named the states still at risk this year as Anambra, Delta, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa, have called for the immediate evacuation of residents of the identified areas to avert a catastrophic outcome. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar- Farouq, who disclosed these at a press conference in Abuja, on Sunday, in Abuja, tasked the governments of the respective states, local government councils and communities to “prepare by evacuating people living on flood plains to high grounds, providing tents and relief materials, fresh water as well as medical supply for a possible outbreak of water-borne disease.” The minister said the government had initiated a bilateral discussion with authorities in Cameroon next month (November 2022) on the periodic opening of the Lagdo dam. The delegation to Cameroon is to be led by the Permanent Secretary and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be requested to facilitate it,” she said. She expressed sadness over the loss of lives and destruction of property occasioned by the recent flooding across the country. She said,”The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development is concerned that despite all our efforts of averting the consequence of the 2022 flooding season, unfortunately, we have recorded the loss of over 500 lives, partial or total damage of more than 90,000 houses, damage of more than 140, 000 hectares of farmland, so many roads and other critical infrastructures were also affected.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/10/nigeria-not-safe-yet-says-fg-after-floods-claim-603-lives/

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, disclosed yesterday that he rejected a suggestion from the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to take a loan of N1bn. According to Ayu, the idea was, however, rejected. He made the remarks in reaction to claims by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State that he collected N1bn from a presidential aspirant, Ayu on Friday said he never collected N1bn from anyone. Ayu explained that when he assumed office as the chairman and needed to raise money for the party, he did;t take money from the party as suggested by Atiku. He said he refrained from commenting on Wike’s allegations against him to avoid public altercations that could complicate matters for the party. Wike had in a media chat on September 23 accused Ayu of collecting N1bn from a presidential aspirant, which according to him, aided the emergence of Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate. “Can Ayu deny that he did not collect N1bn from Lagos? He told one of the PDP presidential aspirants before the primaries that the governors were not ready to fund the party,” he said, claiming that he knew “how the money was arranged and those involved in packaging the money. He N1bn; let him come out to tell Nigerians (that) it is not true and I will reveal more,” Wike said. Source ”In his latest media chat on Friday, the governor said he stood by his claim, alleging further that the party chairman collected N100m from a governor to renovate the Peoples Democratic Institute, a subsidiary of the party, and that he turned round to collect the same amount from the party. But responding to the governor’s claims during a press briefing at the end of a special Board of Trustees meeting at the party’s headquarters after the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, had submitted the report of his reconciliation committee, Ayu said the consistent attacks on his person were unfortunate. He stated, “When my BoT chairman talks, I am not supposed to say anything more. But since these allegations have persisted, I want to use this opportunity to clear the air. When the first allegation was made about the N1bn, I decided not to respond because we don’t want to cause altercations in the party. Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo state has raised the alarm over, what he described as the activities of an established syndicate with the sole aim of manufacturing fake news, reports claiming he was against the Appeal Court judgement acquitting Nnamdi Kanu. Yesterday, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja sets free the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. A development that has been hailed by most Igbo leaders and Nigerians. But a section of the media, apparently sponsored by suspected Imo state govt opposition, had reported that the Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma criticized the ruling of the Court of Appeal, saying “the Court didn’t take into consideration the impact of its judgement, saying “The insecurity in Imo was as a result of Nnamdi Kanu.” However, In a swift reaction, the Imo govt described the report quoting the governor to have said “The insecurity in Imo was as a result of Nnamdi Kanu,” as the activities of an established syndicate with the sole aim of manufacturing fake news and maliciously crediting same to the Governor and Government of Imo State, urging the public to disregard the attempt to maliciously discredit the Imo governor from the good works of providing dividends of democracy to citizens of Imo. In a statement made available to Vanguard, the IMO govt said Those behind the fake news are advised to desist from the practice as the 3R Government is focused on delivering transformational policies and programmes to the Imo people. “It has come to our knowledge, the activities of an established syndicate with the sole aim of manufacturing fake news and maliciously crediting same to the Governor and Government of Imo State. “The objective of this group is not far-fetched as they struggle to discredit Governor Hope Uzodimma who is committed to the governance of Imo State and the wellbeing of Ndi Imo and Ndi Igbo in general. “The false publication with the heading “The release of Nnamdi Kanu by Appeal Court is not a good one for Nigerians, FG should do the needful” DID NOT emanate from the Governor nor the Government of Imo State.
