You see why I dislike Tinubu. Typically issues like this should get Wike immediately suspended or fired if we were in a country that abhors corruption but Tinubu won't do that. I should be shocked at most of the responses so far. But you know what, that is what an under developed country looks like. The very difference between it and a developed economy.

Tinubu Approves Sweeping Sports Infrastructure Overhaul Nationwide

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive package of sports infrastructure projects across Nigeria, with the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja set for a major overhaul as part of the first phase of what the National Sports Commission describes as an unprecedented nationwide renewal drive.

The NSC in a statement signed by its Director of Press, Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Ajayi, said approvals were ratified at the NSC’s Tenders Board Meeting and cover a wide range of projects — from elite facility upgrades in Abuja to community mini-stadiums, tertiary institution sports centres, and direct support for states hosting upcoming editions of the National Sports Festival.

At the heart of the first phase is the complete revamp of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, whose pitch and tartan tracks have fallen into a state of disrepair that has limited their use by Nigeria’s national teams. The rehabilitation will extend to dressing rooms, the media centre, VIP seating, corporate suites, PA and security systems, heating and cooling infrastructure, and the roof membrane.

The stadium will also benefit from the installation of internationally compliant floodlights, electronic advertising boards, a protective pitch cover to enable the venue to host concerts and generate revenue, and the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to meet modern international standards.

Further approvals at the Abuja complex include the establishment of a High Performance Centre, the redevelopment of a 200-bed athletes’ hostel into a hotel facility open to the public, the rehabilitation of the swimming pool at Package B, the construction of two new training pitches, and the building of a National Sports Centre to provide dedicated office space for the Commission and all sports federations. An anti-doping laboratory and upgraded sports medical facilities with advanced equipment have also been approved.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko said the approvals signal a decisive shift in government policy.

“These projects represent a bold step towards restoring Nigeria’s sporting glory and creating sustainable opportunities for future generations. Mr. President is deliberately repositioning sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, infrastructure development and economic growth,” Dikko said, adding that President Tinubu has already approved the establishment of a National Sports Infrastructure Development Bond to fund the sustainable revamp and maintenance of key facilities nationwide.

NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade described the scope as transformational. “This is beyond infrastructure renewal — it is about building a complete sports ecosystem that supports talent discovery, athlete development, job creation, and global competitiveness,” she said.

Beyond Abuja, the Federal Government approved direct support for states hosting the next three editions of the National Sports Festival.

Enugu State, which hosts the next edition later this year, will receive funding for an Olympic-size swimming pool, an upgraded indoor sports hall, and rehabilitated athletes’ hostels, among other projects.

Nationwide, approvals were also granted for the establishment of sports centres across 15 tertiary institutions spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, as well as the construction of 20 mini sports centres and mini stadiums in communities across the country — targeted at youth engagement, grassroots development, and local economic opportunity.

Work is already underway on several other major stadium projects under NSC-led partnerships. The Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna is undergoing total redevelopment in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani, with completion expected in 2027. Construction is also progressing on the new Bichi Stadium in Kano through a collaboration between the NSC and the National Assembly.

The Commission confirmed that processes are at an advanced stage for the complete redevelopment of the National Stadium Lagos through a public-private partnership, and the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan through a collaboration with the Oyo State Government.

The NSC said the projects align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Commission’s RHINSE — Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria Sports Economy — framework, under which sports is being repositioned as a strategic driver of economic growth, job creation, and national development.
