Nigerians will from Wednesday , April 1 , 2020 , pay more for electricity , The PUNCH reports . The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had disclosed this in its December 2019 Minor Review of Multi - Year Tariff Order 2015 and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2020 . Checks by The PUNCH on Monday showed that the decision to increase tariff had not yet been suspended despite the lockdown occasioned by the COVID- 19 pandemic . A top source at Ikeja Electric told The PUNCH that the firm had not received any directive from NERC as regards reversal of the plan . He said , “ According to the tariff order for the year, we are supposed to increase on April 1 , 2020 . So far , we have not received any directive not to go ahead . ” Efforts to get NERC to speak on the matter were not successful on Monday as the spokesman for the commission , Usman Arabi , said he was not around but on a course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies . Arabi ’ s substitute , however , did not respond to calls or a text message sent to him . NERC had disclosed in its December 2019 Minor Review of Multi - Year Tariff Order 2015 and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2020 that the order was issued to reflect the impact of changes in the minor review variables in the determination of cost- reflective tariffs and relevant tariff and market shortfalls for 2019 and 2020 . The commission said the order also determined the minimum remittances payable by the distribution companies in meeting their market obligations based on the allowed tariffs . It said , “The Federal Government’ s updated Power Sector Recovery Programme does not envisage an immediate increase in end- user tariffs until April 1 , 2020 , and a transition to full cost reflectivity by end of 2021 . “ In the interim , the Federal Government has committed to funding the revenue gap arising from the difference between cost- reflective tariffs determined by the commission and the actual end- user tariffs payable by customers . ” According to NERC , all Discos are obligated to settle their market invoices in full as adjusted and netted off by applicable tariff shortfall . Powered by RubiQu It said , “ All FGN intervention from the financing plan of the PSRP for funding tariff shortfall shall be applied through NBET and the market operator to ensure 100 per cent settlement of invoices issued by market participants . “ Effectively , this order places a freeze on the tariffs of the TCN and administrative charges until April 2020 at the rates applied in generating MO invoices for the period of January to October 2019 . ” https://punchng.com/electricity-tariff-to-increase-on-wednesday/

Nigeria's death toll from the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak has risen to 176, data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has shown. Nigeria is now battling two deadly diseases: Lassa fever and COVID-19, which has infected 65 people and caused one death. While COVID-19 is a new global disease with less epidemiological information, Lassa fever has become endemic in Nigeria and the country has battled it annually for the past 50 years. The NCDC, on Thursday, said since the onset of the 2020 Lassa fever outbreak, the country has recorded 932 confirmed cases and 176 deaths. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW Last week, the total number of deaths was 161, meaning 15 people died from the disease within the last week. Outbreak NCDC said for reporting week 12, the number of newly confirmed cases decreased from 51 cases in week 11, to 28 cases. The new cases were reported from 12 states - Edo, Ondo, Ebonyi, Bauchi, Taraba, Plateau, Kogi, Abia, Enugu, FCT, Benue and Gombe. The gradual reduction of new cases could be as a result of the rains in some parts of the country especially in places with a high burden of the disease. Lassa fever outbreaks have become an epidemic disease in Nigeria as it is diagnosed all year round. The outbreak peaks in the dry season from November to May. As at the time of reporting, a total of 4012 suspected cases with 932 confirmed cases (11 probable) and 176 deaths have so far been reported in 125 local government areas in 27 states. ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW These figures represent the total cases from the beginning of the year until March 22. Figures from NCDC for the same reporting period in the previous year show that cases this year are higher than what was obtainable last year. As of the same period in 2019, a total of 1924 suspected cases, 510 confirmed cases and 119 deaths were reported in 74 local government areas in 21 states. Health Workers From the report, no health worker newly contracted the virus. This is good news for the health workers as their members are usually susceptible to contracting the disease. Since January, a total of 34 health workers have been affected. Cumulatively, from week 1 to week 12, 176 deaths have been reported with a case fatality rate of 18.9 per cent. In total for 2020, 27 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 125 local government areas. Of all confirmed cases, 72 per cent are from Edo, Ondo, and Ebonyi states. The predominant age-group affected is 21-30 years and the male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:1.2. Lassa Fever Lassa Fever is a hemorrhagic disease transmitted by a vector called multimammate rat. The virus is transmitted from the excreta or urine of the vector to humans, and from humans to humans. There is also no vaccine yet to prevent the spread of the virus. However, the federal government has said there are ongoing researches to find a lasting solution (vaccine) to the outbreak. In the meantime, NCDC has advised that anyone suspected of being in contact with a Lassa patient needs to be presented to the health facilities within a period of 21 days. Symptoms of the disease at early stages are similar to febrile illness such as malaria. General symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pains, chest pain, and in severe cases, unexplainable bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth, vagina, anus and other body orifices. It could also present persistent bleeding from sites of intravenous cannulation. The son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Mohammed Atiku Abubakar, has accused the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, of lying about how he contracted coronavirus. Mr Abubakar, in a short message shared with PREMIUM TIMES via a WhatsApp platform, said he never shook hands with the governor when they met on board an Aero Contractors aircraft. The duo, accompanied by their wives, boarded the plane on March 18 at about 5:20 p.m from Lagos to Abuja. On his return to Abuja, Mr Abubakar tested positive for the virus, and has since been undergoing treatment at a government facility. Following Atiku Abubakar’s open declaration of his son’s health status, the governor’s spokesperson, Mukhtar Gidado, announced in a statement that the governor had self-isolated, citing his meeting with Mr Abubakar. Mr Mohammed said he boarded the same flight and shook hands with Mr Abubakar. On Tuesday, Mr Gidado said in another statement that Gov Mohammed had tested positive for the virus. “This is to inform the general public that the results of the six initial tests carried out by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on His Excellency, Senator Bala Mohammed, his family and aides that accompanied him to Lagos is (sic) out,” the statement said. “Of the six initial tests carried out, one sample was confirmed positive of COVID-19. The positive result happens to be that of His Excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State. “At this point, it should be noted that the governor is on self-isolation as his doctors and officials from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) have taken full charge of his quarantine.” “His Excellency solicits for prayers from all and requests that all those who had contact with him or anyone known to have the same medical condition to go for test immediately in order to avert further spread of COVID-19 epidemic,” the statement reads. But Mr Abubakar said the governor sat on one side of the aisle, while he was on another side with his wife. “We greeted but never shook hands,” he said. Governor’s trip abroad Meanwhile, findings by PREMIUM TIMES have shown that like the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, the Bauchi governor was also in Germany between March 12 and 15. He was said to have returned to Nigeria on March 15. Another source within the Atiku family, who did not want to be named, also told PREMIUM TIMES that; “It was, therefore, surprising that the governor in his statements never mentioned that he travelled to Germany where he met many business partners and investors. Why did he hide such important aspect of his movement and the emphasis was on a handshake that never happened.” Corroborating the claim were some of the governor’s tweets and pictures posted on March 13, which showed his trip in Germany, sitting on a round table amongst foreign partners. PREMIUM TIMES learned that the governor signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a German organisation, Water is Right Foundation, and also reportedly met two representatives of Bauchi community in Germany. Usman Giade of Deutsche Welle Radio and another Bauchi State indigene, identified as Gar of the University of Berlin’s Linguistics department, represented the community at a meeting. Meeting Dangote, Nanono, others Since then, the governor had other meetings. He met with the business mogul, Aliko Dangote, and the minister of agriculture, Sabo Nanono, last week, according to his tweets. The tweets said Mr Dangote led a team of the Aliko Dangote Foundation to his office, and pledged to empower 1,000 rural women in each of the 20 local government areas in the state. “Also, resulting from our meeting this afternoon, the @AlikoDangoteFdn further committed to building five additional primary healthcare centres for enhanced healthcare service delivery in the state. #GreaterBauchi,” the governor tweeted six days ago. The tweet was accompanied by a group picture with the governor standing beside Mr Dangote among other personalities. Similarly, on Thursday, the governor tweeted about the minister’s visit with their picture was also shared. He also shared his photo at the National Economic Council meeting where he sat close to the Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, and another where he was in a discussion with his Edo State counterpart, Godwin Obaseki. It is, however, not clear, if these individuals and officials the governor had met within the last one week have embarked on self-isolation or not. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/383720-coronavirus-i-never-shook-hands-with-bauchi-governor-atikus-son.html

Musician Davido proceeded with a club appearance that had more than 50 people in attendance at Nigeria’s largest city of Ibadan on Saturday, missing an opportunity to be a voice for awareness against coronavirus. Governments across the world have been advising citizens to desist from taking part in a gathering that would have more than 50 people. In Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, officials have announced a downward review of the threshold to only 20 people. Health experts, including the World Health Organisation, strongly recommended social distancing, a practice that involves people keeping a physical distance of at least one metre from one another, as a potent form of suppressing the spread of COVID-19, a new strain of coronavirus currently ravaging the globe. Social distancing was implemented in China, where the virus was believed to have broken out in November 2019, and the country has now recorded tremendous progress, including reporting no new infections for three days and counting. Even though celebrities across the world, including Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres, have been lending their voice towards social distancing and self-isolation awareness by the larger populace, Davido still proceeded with at least three events around Ibadan on Saturday, PREMIUM TIMES gathered. First in the afternoon, Davido appeared at a wedding in Ibadan. Later in the day, he was cited at Club Derok and Stone Café, both in Ibadan, PREMIUM TIMES learnt from those who attended and multimedia shared online. Stone Café said on its Instagram page at about 10:42 p.m. that Davido and his crew arrived at the club, although the information now seemed to have been taken down. Dozens of people turned up at all the events where the artist performed. Before hitting the clubs, he was hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde, but it was unclear whether the governor had prior knowledge of the musician’s other missions across Ibadan. Aways Club Asa Asika, Davido’s manager and publicist, could not be reached for comment Sunday morning. Stone Café and Club Derok could not be reached for comments. The club events were held as Oyo State was announcing its first confirmed coronavirus infection shortly after midnight on Sunday. The case has taken Nigeria’s confirmed coronavirus infections to 26, per Nigeria’s disease control department. Daizey Lounge Oyo State has closed down schools and urged postponement of religious and other social gatherings of more than 50 people. Mr Makinde leads the state’s task force against coronavirus. It was unclear whether the state has commenced enforcement of its restrictions on social gatherings. Taiwo Adisa, Governor Makinde’s spokesperson, did not answer calls to his phone Sunday morning. In Lagos on Saturday, several events centres were shut down by officials for apparent violation of safety guidelines against coronavirus. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/383132-despite-govt-advisory-davido-performs-at-ibadan-clubs.html?fbclid=IwAR1swZDM26sd2xwlxuyF86f4Fr5F56B8sshCMjS02B2-2-BTeiCBWw7a5qs
