A former governor of Ekiti State , Chief Segun Oni , and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress , on Thursday , disagreed over his planned defection to the Peoples Democratic Party . Oni , an APC chieftain and a former Deputy National Chairman of the party , said his proposed return to the PDP under which platform he governed Ekiti State was necessitated by calls by his loyalists to leave in view of the shoddy treatment they were receiving from the APC despite their contributions to the party ’ s victory in the 2018 governorship election. However , the APC state Publicity Secretary , Ade Ajayi, denied the allegations . Oni , who spoke through the Director General of ‘ Atunse Ekiti ’ , Ife Arowosoge , accused the Dr Kayode Fayemi - led government of exhibiting “ oppressive nature against Oni ’ s people, coupled with the nepotism and clannishness witnessed in the appointment into federal , state and local government positions . ” Arowosoge , also said the decision to leave the APC was a collective decision taken by the former governor’ s loyalists . He noted that they had since discovered that the PDP was more democratic . The director general said , “ The PDP made mistakes and apologised , but things are getting worse in the APC. We have contributed to the APC, but get nothing in return , so our defection is justifiable and not self - serving . “ It was our observation that the Ekiti APC does not believe in democracy from ward , local government and state levels while the appointments to government positions at the state and federal levels are limited to family members , friends and associates of the governor. “ Governor Fayemi and his group in Ekiti introduced a novelty of nepotism and clannishness in selecting people into elective positions that is not known to democracy anywhere in the world . In the last election , no nomination form was made available or refund made to any Oni ’ s supporters . “ Many of our members were threatened with expulsion and suspension while some handpicked ward executives were instigated to suspend Oni indefinitely . We sent a petition to the APC NWC about this irresponsible action , but nothing was done , ” he said . Responding , the APC spokesman , said , “ The APC never gave Oni any unfair treatment , rather he was accorded the necessary respect and recognition when he joined the party from the PDP in 2014 . “ We are not surprised that he is going back to the PDP where he came from , but I don ’ t know the shabby treatment that made him defect to the PDP. He was suspended from his political ward because he offended them and instead of him to attend the ward meeting to explain himself , he refused. https://punchng.com/oni-apc-trade-words-over-ekiti-ex-govs-defection/?fbclid=IwAR2y680W7UmA0k-P0--c6L6gv92hnNaGCAEomyfERFuIN5rglGa2BcrUNjY

Abegunde said TESCOM , on getting a hint about the development, carried out a thorough investigation and followed the due process before arriving at the decision to dismiss the teacher . The TESCOM boss , who said the dismissal would serve as a deterrent to others, who might want to indulge in such a “depraved and unethical ” act , praised the state government for swinging into action by arresting Owoosi . He assured members of the public that Ekiti values would be restored by the Governor Kayode Fayemi administration by ensuring justice and bringing offenders to justice without hesitation . Owoosi , who was until his dismissal, a Grade Level 10 Economics teacher at the Alarelu Comprehensive High School , Igbara Odo- Ekiti , in the Ekiti South West Local Government Area of the state, was alleged to have impregnated the SS 3 pupil. Popular gospel actor, Lanre Teriba aka Atorise is presently in an unstable condition following injuries he sustained during an attack in Lagos at the weekend, by men suspected to be herdsmen. According to an eyewitness account, the incident happened on Saturday night at the Berger end of the Lagos/ Ibadan expressway while the act was returning from an engagement. The Pageonline gathered that a group of unknown gunmen attacked the musician while returning from a wedding ceremony where he entertained guests. The attack victim who is currently receiving treatment in a Lagos hospital sustained serious injury in the head and neck. Speaking with ThePage’s Tosin Faleye on his hospital bed, Atorise said that he is still alive is a miracle, informing that he was only revived to life after he was rushed to the hospital from the scene of the incident as he had earlier passed out as a result of the devastating effect of the deadly weapon unleashed on him by his attackers who actually left him lifeless until God took control. Recall that the singer just released a song titled WHY THE KILLINGS, where he lamented the state of insecurity in the country. In the song, Atorise campaigned against the unending cases of kidnapping and wanton killings especially by suspected Fulani herdsmen among other murderous gangs responsible for the various reported cases of killing in the country in the name of religion. https://thenationonlineng.net/gunmen-attack-gospel-singer-atorise/

Nigerians are set to face another blackout for the next 10 days as the shortage of gas has hit 16 power generating plants causing power generation to drop to 3,675 megawatts (MW) from its highest point. According to Daily Trust, operators said until scheduled maintenance is completed on the gas pipelines the drop in power supply will continue for another 10 days. Power generation statistics from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) puts peak generation at 4,055MW on Friday, March 6, but by the close of the day, it had dropped to 3,236MW. Meanwhile, Ndidi Mbah, TCN spokesperson, in a statement on Saturday, March 7, confirmed this development. She said: “The nation’s power sector is experiencing power supply shortage caused by low gas supply which has restrained the ability of many thermal power stations to generate optimally.” Due to the cut in gas supply, four Generation Companies (GenCos) namely Sapele NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP, and Azura Edo generated zero megawatts (MW) on Friday, March 6. Though twelve other power plants were affected they generated at lower capacities. The TCN spokesperson went on to add that the gas constraint has caused a remarkable reduction in the amount of power transmitted to the various Distribution Companies (DisCos) for supply to electricity consumers. The Nation previously reported that Mele Kyari, the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), said it is lamentable that electricity has become a luxury to citizens of the country. Kyari said that before the federal government goes into the issue of renewable energy, it must first deal with the availability of power supply. The NNPC boss said that currently, many Nigerians are still struggling to provide themselves with a meal for a day, while the full power supply is reserved for the rich and mighty. In a related development, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed that the national grid has been restored after a system collapse on Thursday, January 16. Ndidi Mbah, the general manager, TCN's public affairs department, disclosed that the fault on the power grid was restored on Friday, January 17. “Full restoration of the grid was achieved at 2:19 am today (Friday),” Mbah, said.

Afghanistan lurched deeper into political crisis Monday as the country’ s two rival leaders swore themselves in as president at simultaneous ceremonies that were interrupted by at least two blasts . The bitter feud between President Ashraf Ghani and his former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah has raised fears for Afghanistan ’ s fragile democracy as the US prepares to leave the country following an agreement last month with a strong and largely unified Taliban . Polls were held in September , but repeated delays and accusations of voter fraud meant that Ghani , the incumbent president , was only declared as the winner of the second term in February — sparking a furious response from Abdullah , who vowed to form his own parallel government . On Monday Ghani , dressed in traditional Afghan clothing and white turban , arrived at the presidential palace to be sworn in , surrounded by supporters , senior political figures , diplomats and foreign dignitaries including US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad . Minutes later , in another corner of the sprawling presidential palace compound , a suit - clad Abdullah inaugurated himself as president , vowing to “ safeguard the independence , national sovereignty, territorial integrity ” of Afghanistan . As hundreds of people watched Ghani ’ s ceremony , two loud explosions were heard , prompting some people to flee . There were no reports of casualties from the blasts , which mirrored a similar incident in August 2018 when militants fired several mortars as Ghani was making a speech at the palace , injuring six civilians . “ I have no bulletproof vest on , only my shirt , ” Ghani told those who stayed behind as sirens wailed . “ I will stay even if I have to sacrifice my head . ” An AFP reporter saw many of those who fled return to their seats after Ghani ’ s refusal to leave the podium prompted cheers and applause . The game of thrones has strained the patience of the international community and Afghans alike , with Washington warning earlier that the bickering posed a risk to the US withdrawal deal , which requires the Taliban to hold talks with Kabul . Widening divisions among Afghan politicians would leave the insurgents with the upper hand in those negotiations . The row has left many Afghans despairing for their country ’ s future . “ It is impossible to have two presidents in one country, ” said Ahmad Jawed , 22 , who urged the men “ to put their personal interests aside and only think of their country instead of fighting for power ” . Powered by RubiQu “ Instead of holding oath - taking ceremonies they should talk to each other to find a solution ” , he told AFP. During Monday ’ s speech , Ghani appeared to extend an olive branch to his opponents , saying, “ Today is the day for unity we have to think about the future . ” “ I call on … (past ) political rivals to lend me a hand and a shoulder to serve this country. Our mission is peace and ending the 40 years of war , ” he added. https://punchng.com/blasts-as-afghanistan-swears-in-two-presidents/

The teachers of Obafemi Awolowo University Staff School , Ile- Ife, on Tuesday protested the failure of the university’s authority to pay over 18 months’ salaries. The teachers, who trooped out with placards bearing various inscriptions, obstructed vehicular movement while demanding immediate payment of their salaries in arrears. They were joined by members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), as they also demanded the inclusion of workers of the institution’s staff school on its payroll. Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Adeleye Olufemi said the university has refused to pay their salaries. “We have protested on several occasions but the Ogunbodede administration will always turn deaf ears,” he said. Another protester, who declined to say her name because she was scared of victimisation, said many of the teachers in the school find getting their ‘daily meal’ difficult. because they were neglected. “There are times we held meetings that we should go on strike but we later discovered that when we do this, we are only punishing the innocent kids in school,” she said. The chairman, SSANU OAU chapter, Ademola Oketunde, said the federal government’s non-payment of salaries is affecting teachers’ ability to give their best to the next generation. The crisis on non-payment of staff school teachers in OAU started in 2016 and several protests have been held, without solution. Efforts by this newspaper to reach Abiodun Olanrewaju, the school’s spokesperson at the time of filing this report were not successful. His known telephone numbers were not connecting and text message sent did not get a response.
