My job as an HR Officer is very interesting and can also be sometimes so very funny. Part of my duty is recruitment and selections: interview job applicants, and fix them into positions they are better qualified for. I have been privileged to interview various kinds of job applicants across different fields; Mrs Folasade Akinyemi is one individual I will never forget. She interview was one of its kinds. I can’t stop laughing anytime I recall my encounter with her. Read my funny encounter with Mrs Folasade Akinyemi….http://www.workgist.com/read-my-funny-encounter-with-mrs-folasade-akinyemi/ |
I am finding that my eyes are a little more moist these days. I seem to be tearing up from time to time. Now it isn’t because I am sad. I am neither depressed nor stressed. Nothing bad has happened to me either. In fact, I find myself smiling and laughing more often too. The simple truth is that while my love and joy have grown over the years, my empathy has grown along with them. When I see an act of love, kindness, and goodness towards another then, my eyes moisten. When I see another soul hurting they grow damp as well. I don’t mind the tears, though. They mean that my heart is open and loving as it was meant to be........http://www.workgist.com/my-story-tears-and-laughter/ |

Here’s how you can tell when an opposite-sex friendship in the workplace is becoming dangerous: • You find yourself sharing personal information with her that you otherwise wouldn’t share with someone else or your spouse. • You begin looking for her when you get to work, and find yourself genuinely disappointed when she’s not there. • You start creating opportunities to be alone with your opposite-sex friend during the workday, such as through non-work related lunch appointments or lingering too long at her office or cubicle. • You’re physically attracted to the person......http://www.workgist.com/heres-how-you-can-tell-when-an-opposite-sex-friendship-in-the-workplace-is-becoming-dangerous/ |
Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She asked, “How is my little boy? Is he going to be OK? When can I see him?” The surgeon said, “I’m sorry. We did all we could.” Grief stricken, Sally asked, “Why do little children get cancer? Doesn’t God care anymore? God, where were you when my son needed you?” The Surgeon said, “One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes to let you spend time with your son’s remains before it is transported to the University.” Sally asked that the nurse stay with her while she said good-bye to her son. She ran her fingers through the thick, red, curly hair. The nurse asked , “Would you like to keep a lock of his hair,” to which Sally replied, “Yes, please.” The nurse gently cut the lock of hair, placed it in a plastic bag, and handed it to Sally. Sally said, “It was Jimmy’s idea to give his body to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else and that is what he wanted. I said no at first, but Jimmy said, ‘Mom, I won’t be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his mother.’ My Jimmy had a heart of gold, always thinking about someone else and wanting to help others if he could.”http://www.workgist.com/a-letter-from-heaven/ |

Psychologist Joseph Weintruab of Babson of Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is a Scholar of Perfectionism. He says if you work for someone who is a perfectionist, there are no coping mechanisms other than to quit. “Obviously Weintruab wasn’t thinking about the plight of the self- employed individual who works for a perfectionist. When you are your own perfectionist boss, you can’t quit on yourself. Instead you need to realize that research shows employees who work for perfection bosses 1.Usually have bad morale 2.Get sick more often than others and 3.Are driven to put performance first, so their interpersonal relationships with customers and others suffer........http://www.workgist.com/escaping-perfectionism/ |
Women have more imagination than men. They need it to tell men how wonderful they are. • Women have a number of faults. Men have only two – everything they say and everything they do. • A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. • Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. • When women are depressed they either eat or go shopping. When men are depressed, they invade another country. • A man is a person who will pay N2 for a N1 item he wants. Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when it comes to your job. Many employees quit organizations in manners that they are not able to go back or relate effectively with their ex-boss after leaving the work place. So we consider some ways to quit such that you don’t burn bridges along the way. Do it on Friday: The best day for employees to let their company know they are leaving is at the end of the week. The best time to give your notice, especially if you’re in a less than desirable situation at work, is Fridays. Because it helps everyone involved to avoid the post-meeting awkwardness, and gives you a couple days to regroup before entering your last two or four weeks at work. Tell direct boss: Employees who have developed a close relationship with their supervisor should let him or her know first, before giving the company official notice. If an employee is close friends with his or her boss, the may feel slighted and blindsided by the sudden act of resigning. It may make more sense for an employee to inform the boss of their intention to resign, well before formal notice of the resignation is provided to the organization.http://www.workgist.com/how-to-quit-your-job/ |
I discovered a letter from one of my employee on my work desk this morning, to my uttermost surprise it was a love letter. I wouldn’t say I was shocked, neither will I say I was flattered. What amazed me most was the approach she used. “My Darling …….., I know am ridiculous but how can I deny what my feelings are to you. Words are not enough to express how much I’ve loved you even though I’m aware you are married with two handsome boys. I’m afraid this might be the end of our good acquaintance, or if I’m lucky, the realization of my dreams, which is for you to love me as I love you. I told myself I might as well take the risks because it’s the only remedy I know that could unburden this feeling I’ve been keeping ever since. I love you. I know you’ll find it hard to believe me if I tell you how much you mean to me. I could hardly understand what I feel for you, I’ve endured long sleepless nights just thinking only of you. About me wrapped in your arms all night long.http://www.workgist.com/in-love-with-my-boss/ |
Employees in Nigeria quit their job for many reasons. Some ladies follow their spouses across the country, stay home with children, go back to school, the salary is below their qualification/expectation.e.tc. These reasons are tough to address by an employer because they involve life events in the employee’s world outside of work. But, the majority of reasons why employees quit their job are under the control of the employers. The best way to retain employees is to stay in touch with what they’re thinking. Are they happy with their work? Are their needs for challenge, belonging, development, and meaningful work met? Do they have the communication, problem solving, feedback, and recognition that they need from their boss? Ask them. Hold interviews to determine why employees stay with your organization. Then, pay attention to and enhance the factors they identify that keep them coming back every day. Find out what it is before the employee announces her departure. Here are seven critical reasons why employees quit their job. You can manage them....... http://www.workgist.com/reasons-why-nigerian-employees-quit-their-jobs-way-forward/ |
Children are born with two natural fears: 1) the fear of falling and 2) the fear of loud noise. Aside from these fears all other fears are learned. Just as these fears are learnt you can also learn to be supremely confident. Fear as we know is real and the greatest enemy to success. Below we highlight five confidence destroying fears that you are likely to face on the road to success. 1) Fear of success, 2) Fear of failure, 3) Fear of rejection, 4) Fear of taking a risk and 5) Fear of the unknown. CONFIDENCE DESTROYER 1- FEAR OF SUCCESS Yes, many people are actually afraid of becoming successful. You will think everybody wants to be successful, but life has taught me that many people actually sabotage their own success, just to stay at a comfortable, mediocre level. These kinds of people sometimes appear to be very humble and modest and are disgusted by others who are highly confident. They feel unworthy and undeserving of higher levels of success. You will hear words like “I don’t think I need to earn more money”, “what will people think of me if I become very successful. People can experience fear of success because they don’t want others to think less of them or suspects they have become successful, rich or have dreams beyond their current status in life. If you have this fear, you need to be convinced that it is appropriate to like yourself and that you are worthy of higher level of success. CONFIDENCE DESTROYER 2- FEAR OF FAILURE This fear will keep you from attempting to do things that you have always longed to do. Fear of failure keeps you stuck at a job that you hate or a career path that is leading you no were, its stops you from making forward progress in your life. Being confident means that you are not deterred by problems, mistakes or errors because they are only setbacks and not failures. Confident people recognise that three steps forward and two steps back still equals one step forward.http://www.workgist.com/confidence-destroyers/ |
Our trustworthiness is only as high as the balance in our personal integrity Account. Because our integrity is the basis of our confidence in ourselves and the confidence we inspire in others, one of the greatest manifestations of effective personal leadership is the exercise of care and wisdom in building a high positive balance in that account. Primarily, we build it through the exercise of independent will in making and keeping commitments. But without self-awareness, we don’t have the wisdom necessary to manage such an account. We may set our goals too high, turning potential deposits into huge withdrawals when we fail to achieve them. We may pass up daily, weekly, moment-by-moment opportunities to make deposits because we’re too busy blaming circumstances or other people for our own failure to achieve our goals. Self-awareness involves deep personal honesty. It comes from asking and answering hard questions: Do I really want to do it? Am I willing to pay the price? Do I have enough strength to do it? Do I accept the responsibility for my own growth? Am I settling for mediocrity when I could be achieving excellence? Am I blaming and accusing others for my own inability to set and achieve goals?http://www.workgist.com/self-awareness-empowers-us-to-build-integrity/ |

Recruitment is a long process that eats up hours of time, from vacancy placement to interviews and the selection and screening.etc. Employers invest time and energy to select the right employee/Applicant. Job seekers can increase their likelihood of landing the job by avoiding these job seekers’ behaviors employers hate. Employers magnify their chances of hiring a superior/better qualify candidate, when they avoid job seekers who exhibit these ten fatal errors.http://www.workgist.com/why-you-are-still-unemployed/ |
She has two beautiful girls, 3 years and 1 year. She is 29 years old and lives a devastating life. After struggling on her own to care for her two daughters, done all meaner jobs possible, from housekeeper to nanny to sales girl, Amanda decided it was time to go back home and apologize to her parents. She got home to Ghana and surprisingly, mummy was happy to see her and of course her grand kids, but dad was furious. “How the hell did you end up with another child for that idiot of a man?” Where did I go wrong with you Amanda”, dad continues, “ we sent you to school , but no you said you were in love and ran away to Nigeria with that good for nothing idiot. Now you are back, to do what exactly?” As I sit back and watch the situation unfold, I’m filled with tears and pity for my sister. She had such a bright future until James came into her life with all the flashy, flashy things. Now that she is back, how do I tell her that James just got married two weeks ago to a friend of hers? Here’s Amanda’s story; We grew up in a comfortable home. Dad gave us the best of everything. Amanda is my immediate elder sister and I really do love her. We both confide in each other as we grew up. Amanda had just gotten admission to study Medicine in a University here at home (Ghana), dad was super proud. I was also studying International Relations in the same University. One day, we were walking down to the Library when James’ car pulled over. He is our friend Naomi’s elder brother. He just gave her a surprise visit. Naomi jumped with excitement, ran to him, hugged him and introduced us (Amanda and I) to him. Immediately he shook hands with Amanda, I saw a connection. Naomi offered that we follow them to her room to see what James had brought her. Well, that was how Library was cancelled for the day. James works in a big company in Nigeria. He was given official home, official car, official everything. Coming home to Ghana, he looked comfortable. Well, Amanda and I exchanged phone numbers with him and he left. One day, Amanda came to me and said James invited her over to his place in Nigeria. She made me promise not to tell our parents. She came back with loads of gifts. The visits got more frequent. Amanda was definitely in love. About six months into their relationship, Amanda turned 25 years old and she celebrated with James in Nigeria. When she got back, she told me she was moving in with James. She had processed Admission into a University in Nigeria. My dad was mad as could be, but to keep the story simple, she moved to Nigeria to start afresh. Before long, she called to say she’s pregnant and James has agreed they will get married after the baby comes. The Baby came, it was a girl. Dad insisted James needed to come do the right thing.http://www.workgist.com/my-story-experience-of-love-and-betrayal/ |

I came to find out about my HIV status last year in July; my cd4 was very low 24, which meant I had to start ARVs (drugs to manage the virus from eating up my system). I started taking drugs after a month and right now as am writing, am on drugs. It means that I have been positive for a long time without knowing. Once you start using the drugs, you will not stop for the rest of your days on earth. I never thought for once about HIV/AIDS. Well, I always thought I will never be positive but it has happened and there’s nothing I can do about it but to live a positive life and my prayer is for God’s protection throughout the days I have left to spend on earth. Discovering my status was not the main problem but how it happened, and the reaction after. On a Thursday in that July, some health workers came to our office to lecture us and run free medical test. Since work won’t start till 10am on that day, because of environmental. They had all the time to lecture us on health issues. After which we had few test which was made compulsory the management for everyone. A room was created for the exercise..........http://www.workgist.com/my-story-i-wish-my-tears-can-make-it-stop/ |

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that, we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.....http://www.workgist.com/happiness-is-a-journey/ |
