PoliticsWelcome To My Father’s Land: The Real Picture by workgist(op): 2:49pm On Nov 10, 2014
With the largest population in Africa, My people are known for their ingenuity and optimism, even in the face of many difficulties. A home to both the very rich and the very poor, it is known by many young Nigerians as 'Naija'. This term expresses the hope for change and a nation of which to be proud.

Our Economy:
Nigeria is Africa’s leading oil producer with an output of over 2 million barrels of crude each day. Despite its growing wealth and economy, poverty levels in Nigeria are on the rise. This is because the oil wealth is not trickling down into society at large. Without naming names, we know the benefactors.

Over a century ago, two-thirds of Nigeria was covered by rich tropical forest. But due to the pressures of a fast-growing population, Nigeria’s forests have been disappearing at one of the highest rates in the world.

Communications play a vital role in a vast and populous country like Nigeria. Radio, television and newspapers vie to keep people informed. It is use as a means of income generation not forgetting entertainment.

Poverty:
We can't talk about our economy and not talk about the poverty rate in a nation that is blessed with so many natural resources.
Poverty is sometimes more about how society shares money out than how much money there is overall. Some African countries are very poor, but others are wealthier (often from oil) with extreme inequalities between their citizens. My land is blessed but the blessing is not circulating.
Developing efforts to combat poverty require many different parts of society working together towards the same goals. In reality, this is hard to achieve.http://www.workgist.com/welcome-to-my-fathers-land-the-real-picture/
BusinessSimple Ways To Raise Business Capital In Nigeria by workgist(op): 5:12pm On Nov 07, 2014
Starting a business in Nigeria can be difficult especially if you don’t have the financial muscle to kick off. Leaving corporate slavery may seem like a perfect idea but there are certain pros and cons of business that needs to be considered before we look at the simple ways to raise capital.

PROS AND CONS OF BUSINESS

One: To make more money

— Pros: You get pay yourself what you want. No one else profit from your work, just you.

— Cons: You can pay yourself only what is surplus. You have to carry the can for any losses

Two: To turn your hobby into a business

— Pros: You know you will enjoy it

— Cons: There may not be enough people prepared to pay for that idea

Three: To be self employed

— Pros: You don’t have to keep updating your CV, filling in application forms & going for interviews

— Cons: You will have to constantly sell yourself & your business idea/ product/ services to the public

Four: To set your own working hours

— Pros: You can’t be kicked off by a boss for being late. You don’t have to ask to take time off. You can be flexible with your hours

— Cons: You will probably find that you have to work more hours than ever before. You have to be on time for your customers/ client. You won’t get sick pay or holiday pay

Five: To invest some available funds in your business

— Pros: No one else is going to take a cut of the profit

— Cons: if you blow it, you have only yourself to blame

Six: To implement a brilliant idea that could be “ the next big time”

— Pros: Your idea might really take off

— Cons: are you absolutely sure that if hasn’t been done? How do you intent to protect this idea from people who might copy it

Okay, having made up your mind regardless of the pros and cons, here are six simple ways to raise business capital. I have grouped them into two major categories for ease of understanding.http://www.workgist.com/simple-ways-to-raise-business-capital-in-nigeria/

CareerSEXUAL HARASSMENT: A Common Phenomenal In Nigeria by workgist(op): 12:55pm On Nov 06, 2014
Sexual harassment is unfortunately a common occurrence in our environment, most especially in the work place. It can take on the form of verbal or physical conduct. When an employee is sexually harassed by employer or fellow colleague. What should be the steps or action to be taken? Another question is who harasses who? Is it the staff that was wearing a too revealing/ overly seductive cloth or the boss that took advantage and smacks her in the Ass? The truth is people have different moral standard and some sees even their wrong actions as a normal thing. I’m not saying that as a justification for doing what is not right. When it occurs, it is important to learn the ways to effectively deal with it. Failing to deal with sexual harassment correctly can result in not getting your claim heard. Many different ways to deal with sexual harassment exist, and the right approach to take depends on your particular situation.
So what constitutes sexual harassment and what can you do to resolve the situation, here are the few things you need to know about sexual harassment at work:http://www.workgist.com/sexual-harassment-a-common-phenomenal-in-nigeria/

Nairaland General6 Rules To Success by workgist(op): 5:01pm On Nov 04, 2014
Many times we wonder what steps or things we need to do to be successful in life. I have highlighted six (6) rules to success as listed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The First Rule: TRUST YOURSELF. What is most important is that you have to dig deep down, dig deep down and ask yourselves, who do you want to be? Not what, but who? And I’m talking about not what your parents and teachers want you to be, but YOU I’m talking about figuring out for yourselves what makes you HAPPY no matter how crazy it may sound to other people. So rule number one is, of course, trust yourself no matter how and what anyone else thinks.
The Second Rule: BREAK THE RULES. We have so many rules in life about everything. I say break the rules. Not the law, but break the rules. It is impossible to be a maverick or a true original. If you’re too well behaved and don’t want to break the rules. You have to think outside the box. That’s what I believe. After all, what is the point of being on this earth if all you want to do is be liked by everyone and avoid trouble? The only way that I ever got anyplace was by breaking some of the rules.
The Third Rule: DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL. Anything I’ve ever attempted, I was always willing to fail. You can’t always win, but don’t be afraid of making decisions. You can’t be paralyzed by fear of failure or you will never push yourself, you keep pushing because you believe in yourself and in your vision and you know that it is the right thing to do and success will come. So don’t be afraid to fail.
The Fourth Rule: DON’T LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS. How many times have you heard that you can’t do this, you can’t do that and it’s never been done before? I love it when someone says that no one has ever done this before, because then when I do it that means that I’m the first one that has done it so pay no attention to the people that say it can’t be done I always listen to myself and say “Yes, you can.”http://www.workgist.com/6-rules-to-successs/
Nairaland GeneralAgainst All Odds; My Battle Against Cancer by workgist(op): 3:59pm On Nov 03, 2014
I am an active, friendly, hardworking and beautiful woman. I love my job and my family dearly; I was a perfect definition of a career woman, until cancer showed its ugly face and turned what used to be perfect into hell on earth.

Hmm!4 years ago, on a beautiful Saturday, I went shopping with my two kids, Jane and Richard. I love spoiling my two angels with gifts since my work does not allow me to spend much time with them. Jane begged me to buy her a new school bag. So we stopped at a store in Bodija, Ibadan. Before we could enter the store, some group of woman got my attention all wearing pink vest, and pink being Jane’s favorite color she started shouting “mum let us go and watch the pink ladies” not knowing that was the beginning of another life transforming chapter.

The pink ladies were doing breast cancer awareness, I was invited by one of them, a very old and pretty woman also in pink to come and do a free MAMMOGRAM test. She said it is just a machine that examines the breast. So I went for the test, who can reject a freebie. After the test, I went into a room. I saw two other women in pink. They started asking me some personal question. The moment one of them said “you have lump in your breast”, my ears and vision blocked, I could not hear or see them for few minute. I was referred to the General Hospital.

I was shocked, angry, speechless and confessed. It is defiantly a mistake I said to myself. That was the end of our shopping. My kids noticed my mood so they left me to my thought. The journey and battle with cancer started. I got confirmation from the doctors.http://www.workgist.com/against-all-odds-my-battle-against-cancer/

Whenever you read or hear stories about people who run successful businesses in Nigeria, your first thought mostly is “he is from a wealthy home or he/she must have embezzled government money”.

Sorry to disappoint you! Not every entrepreneur started with a mouth watering capital. So what can you do if you have no rich parent or spouse, how will you leave your life of steady income (even if it does not last you for a month) for the insecurity of no pay check and running your own show.

Below are seven businesses you can start with little money and probably hold on to your current job until you can stand on your own...........http://www.workgist.com/seven-affordable-businesses-you-can-start-in-nigeria/
FamilyMy Work, My Life by workgist(op): 1:54pm On Oct 30, 2014
Emeka was a young energetic man who had only a secondary school certificate from a college in his village in Anambra State.

He got married to his college girlfriend and they both had three beautiful kids together. Emeka had friends who they all graduated from school together and moved out of Anambra State to further their education and got good jobs. Anytime his friends came back home during festive periods, Emeka always felt intimidated.

Last Christmas, he discussed with one of his friends Fabian that he will appreciate if he could help him get any small paying job in Lagos. Fabian agreed to work on it.

Fabian works with a manufacturing company in Lagos and got his job through a consulting firm. He really wanted Emeka to come to Lagos so he invited him over, linked him up with the recruitment company who finally got Emeka a driving job at a big Automobile company.

Emeka was excited. He spent so much time at his job, that he hardly went home to visit his family. Three months on the job, he started evening classes, seeking to gain a degree so that he can get a better job.

His wife and kids often complained about his absence and how they miss him, but he usually will say “I’m doing all this for you so you can all have a better life”.

Soon after completing his OND program with LASU, he got a better job offer with much higher salary than the previous one. Emeka got a two bedroom flat, brought his family from the village to Lagos, and enrolled their children in better schools than the ones they went to in the village.

Indeed his hard work was paying off; he was promoted, enrolled for an online degree. He decided to relieve his wife of some housework and got a maid, also got her to start a fashion business since she had gained skills in fashion designing. With all this going on, Emeka still didn’t get to see his family for most of the week. After work, he will spend time studying, sorting out office issues and trying to meet deadlines.......

Mercy, a smart hardworking young lady has just been suspended indefinitely for an offense at work that she couldn’t be exonerated from. Here is Mercy’s story;

She graduated from the university in year 2009, completed her NYSC program in 2011. Waited to get the job of her dream for over two years and when a job wasn’t coming, she was determined to do whatever it takes. She attended training programs on employ-ability, changed her looks to a more professional looking lady. Redesigned her CV to meet employers expectations, gave more time to developing her vocabulary and developing business ethics.

Early 2014, February to be specific, Mercy got a good paying job as a Supervisor in a Retail store. Happy to get a job finally, she was passionate about her work. She would go the extra mile to meet her targets. She ensured her section was always neat, visual merchandising of her products was superb. She paid attention to every detail. Ensured her team members would attend to customers in a professional manner. She was never late. CareerLove Affair In The Workplace by workgist(op): 4:20pm On Oct 23, 2014
A paint factory situated has staff strength of 386 with 355 able men and 31 females in the organization.

Carolina, a young dynamic lady with high hopes and deep sense of professionalism and creativity, joined the organization in 2011 and spent one year in their training school to come out as the most out standing management trainee for that year. She was then posted to the Packaging department to express her new ideas and creative skills to build the growing department; her performance was outstanding and positioned her ready for new levels.

After working in the packaging department for Six months with high performance great creativity for solving problems, she was transferred to Quality control department.

Dapo was made her line head; he was young dynamic and single. Dapo, a 29 year old guy with an extreme gorgeous looks, refined poise and gentleman manners that makes all heads turn and keeps eyes hitched in admiration of his fineness, he developed great ideas that delivered exceptional quality products that the organization used as a competitive advantage.

Upon working together for a short period, He was drawn deeply to Caroline and fell deeply in love with her and a strong bond grew and bloomed into deep affection and near open romance. Their relationship became common knowledge in rest rooms and walk ways.

The Human Resource department got to know about their deeply romantic relationship and based on performance concerns advised Dapo to resign from the organization while Caroline was transferred to the logistics department. She was heart-broken and did not come to work for three days, breaking the policy of absenteeism. After a short while, her performance began to drop significantly and her new line manager had to issue performance caution letter.

What is wrong in having affection in the workplace? Was the decision of the personnel department right, just or fair? Now Dapo is filing for a law suit to challenge the decision of management and Caroline’s creative strength seems to have disappeared over the last 5 months.
