The Kenyan government, on Monday, re-introduced fuel subsidies to curb soaring prices of petrol, kerosene, and diesel in the country.

The move came after months of violent anti-government protests over the burden of high cost of living.

Court Fines Stanbic IBTC N120million Over Customer’s Failed Transaction


He claimed that the money was for the payment of school fees for his children.

He told the tribunal that on September 8, 2022, he filled a form under the NIS instant payment option for a transfer of N500,000.

Osuya said his Stanbic IBTC account was debited on both occasions but his Access Bank account was never credited.

He told the tribunal that the reversal on the first transaction was done after 24 hours while the second transaction was reversed after 72 hours.

He alleged that the neglect of duty of care by the bank caused him trauma, embarrassment and a dent in his reputation as he was forced to collect a loan.

Delivering judgement, Salako-Ajulo also ordered the bank to pay the claimant the sum of N1 million as the cost of filing the action.

N1.7bn Electronic Transfer Fraud Rocks Globus Bank


In an affidavit sworn to by the legal officer, Kosisochukwu Ngene, Globus bank said fraudsters took advantage of system glitch in its USSD application between Monday 6th and Saturday 11th of June 2022 to process several fraudulent and unauthorized electronic transfer totalling N1,755,376,156.34 (One Billion, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Five Million, Three Hundred and Seventy-Six Thousand, One Hundred Fifty-Six Naira thirty four kobo.

The bank said 709 people who were its customers were involved in the fraudulent transfer of the funds to accounts domiciled in eight commercial banks.It added that immediately it discovered the glitch, it instantaneously notified all the banks involved and requested that the beneficiary accounts be restricted.

This, Globus Bank said was in line with Central bank of Nigeria regulation to avoid dissipation of the funds fraudulently transferred into the accounts domiciled with the banks.

US Imposes Visa Ban On Nigerians Undermining Democracy


The United States Government has said it had taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle.

This was made known in a statement by the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, on Monday, published on the website of the US government.

The Federal Government in April announced its plan to spend the $800 million loan as ‘part of its subsidy palliatives measures’. Also, last week, President Buhari requested the Senate’s approval for the World Bank loan. It is unclear whether the request to the Senate is for a fresh loan or the one announced in April.

SERAP said, “Suspending any disbursement of the loan to the government would reduce the risks and vulnerability to corruption and mismanagement.”

The letter, read in part: “SERAP is concerned that the government is seeking to spend the loan when it has barely two weeks to leave office and when the project objectives and intended purposes for which the loan is reportedly approved and will be disbursed remain unclear.”

“The government has not satisfactorily explained or justified the need for the loan at this time, especially given the lack of clarity on its use and the crippling debt burden, and the disproportionately negative impact of these retrogressive measures on poor Nigerians.”

NAFDAC Commences Testing Indomie Noodles Tuesday Over Cancer-causing Substance

NAFDAC also said the importation of Indomie noodles into Nigeria had been banned for many years and the products were on the prohibition list.

This is following the detection of a compound called ethylene oxide, a potentially cancer-causing substance in Indomie’s “special chicken” flavour noodles by health officials in Malaysia and Taiwan.
