1966 coup was never an Igbo agenda as acclaimed by Southwest history rewriters.

Nobody said Awolowo had any interest in Southeast or then Eastern region, what we are saying is that after he joined Nigerian side in the civil war, he masterminded lots of plans to end the war in favour of Nigerian government which nobody can blame him of.

Yes in war, commanders make mistake and miscalculation, the great Adolf Hitler who almost captured the world also made a mistake of miscalculation, yet, Adolf Hitler remains a known warrior in the history of mankind, same applies to Ojukwu, both of them held a larger part of the world in a long battle to the surprise of war historians and military analysts.

Major point is and remains, the 1966 Major Nzeogwu led coup was never an Igbo agenda and it was executed by Nigerian soldiers drawn from Igbo, Yoruba, Urhobo, Efik, Bini, and even Middlebelt, including Abacha.

They coup would have been a success if not for Igbo military officers that stopped Nzeogwu, they are:

1. Maj. General Ironsi
2. Col. Ojukwu
3. Conrad Chukwujimje Dibia Nwawo (NA 10),
4. Alexander Attah Madiebo
5. Major Alphonso Keshi.

These officers stopped the Nzeogwu coup and they are all Igbo military officers so where is the Igbo agenda here


How did they foil the 1966 coup

Brigade Major, 2 BDE Kaduna, Keshi informed Madiebo of the coup. Madiebo moved over to the Brigade Headquarters where Nzeogwu had taken over Ademulegun’s seat and worked on Nzeogwu. Ojukwu, Commanding Officer Third Battalion, Kano stood his ground strategically and all worked with Ironsi to fly in Nwawo, then Defence Attaché in London, and Nzeogwu’s teacher. Only then could Major Nzeogwu's heart be softened.

All the none Igbo military officers were so scared of Nzeogwu, no none Igbo officer was bold enough to challenge Nzeogwu.

Major Hassan Usman Katsina, Inspector of the Recce Squadron in Kaduna was confused. Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon ‘ s contribution from Lagos was for Madiebo to ask the doctor to sedate Nzeogwu, a man who was in full control of Kaduna.

The man that should have made a broadcast after the January coup was Ademoyega, a Yoruba. Their plan was to release Chief Obafemi Awolowo, another Yoruba from jail and make him Prime Minister.


The Army Chief would have been Lt. Col David Akpode Ejoor, an Urhobo. The young officer who secured radio Nigeria was Capt. Gibson Sanda Jalo.

Among those who took part in Exercise Damissa were subalterns like John Atom Kpera, Harris Eghagha, Sani Abacha, Bob Egbikor, Fola Oyewole and Olafimihan.

Of the 28 officers and men that followed Nzeogwu to the Sardauna’s house, 22 were non Igbo. Yoruba officers like Victor Adebukunola Banjo,Fajuyi, Olusegun Obasanjo and Oluchi Olutoye knew about the coup.

Nzeogwu did not believe in Biafra , was named Kaduna by his Northern friends and spoke Hausa more than Igbo.

But then, It was not in the place of some overzealous barrack boys (who unfortunately are majorly of a tribe that was as at then controversial) to resolve something everyone else was carefully and tactically watching how it would play out... The colonials were also aware of the whole intrigues.

The Eastern version/excuse abt the coup is that it was all about Awolowo (who as at then was aggrieved) Awolowo never asked for such. Ask yourself ....What would have those boys done if Awolowo declined after that coup? How did they think Awolowo would calm all nerves, knowing well that Awolowo himself was aggrieved and Zik was at then the tall bride? How did they think Awolowo would rule ? By owing some gun thirsty boys a huge favour? It would have worsened things

Man, the coup was all about some Eastern young boys in close proximity to power drawing the first blood (being too cocky and zealous... the same things the North despised abt them then). That's the truth.

The major targets were Northern and Western elites...how gracious can concidence and luck-chance be to the Eastern leaders. A coup void of tribal sentiments would have taken at least one Eastern elite....Ofcourse the North got the message, (Ironsi made things seem more as though it was nothing bad) and it was obvious when they came after Ironsi and others in the counter-coup.

All stories about a few Yorubas being involved is just to save face. Some of the Yorubas knew either too little or too late abt the whole thing.
K. Nzeogwu's interview after Ironsi came to power doesn't seem like he had Awolowo nor Nigeria in mind for the coup. His confidence was like someone who is happy abt the turn of events (Ironsi coming to power and doing nothing abt the plotters)

I repeat, if the coup was abt Awolowo, the sequence and dynamics of the coup would have led to a different story entirely.

There are many accounts, theories and conspiracies about who did what before during and after the war... Some will even accuse Britain.... but the facts are that some boys majorly of a tribe killed leaders from other tribes for reasons best known to them, at a time when every other tribes were nervy, wary yet careful.

Ojukwu wanted Banjo and Ifeajuna to capture Lagos so they can as well have more access to Nigeria's military wares or arsenal which were mostly concentrated in Lagos and Kaduna then, that was the plan...to capture Lagos so Gowon can relocate Nigeria's government then to Kaduna and possibly make a national broadcast announcing that Biafra can go and have their freedom.

This was the plan....there was no intention to invade Midwestern Nigeria to take over, the target was to capture Lagos as an easy route to winning the war fast before foreign supports come for Nigeria which later came from Britain, Egypt, Russia, etc.

Biafra soldiers marching towards Lagos under the command of Col. Banjo and Ifeajuna were confused as to the reason why their commanders suddenly changed mind and told them to retreat back to Benin. Some insider soldiers close to Col. Banjo and Ifeajuna then revealed to Ojukwu that Col. Banjo had a secret meeting with Awolowo to carry out a coup in Biafra to overthrow Ojukwu and bring him to Nigerian government.

Now, while this ascertion could not be ruled out is this; Banjo had written several letters to Gowon explaining his innocence on the 1966 coup, but Gowon and his govt weren't convinced, reason they refused to free him before the civil war broke out and Ojukwu freed him.

So it was learnt that Banjo was only fighting for Biafra cos he had no choice since he would be arrested and jailed again or even executed by Gowon led Nigerian government if he had returned to Nigeria after he was released by Ojukwu, so he stayed in Biafra fighting with Biafra with hope of gaining freedom, but then, a sweeter offer came from Nigerian government through Awolowo promising him freedom + reinstatement into Nigerian army with promotion and all entitlements should he bring Ojukwu's head to Lagos; this part of the story came from insiders that were close to him and Ifeajuna during that war.

But notwithstanding, Ojukwu ought to have spared his life at least for the sacrifice he made for Biafra no matter his offense, Ojukwu was kind of wrong here I must admit. May Banjo's soul continue to rest in peace, we will never forget him, never and I am sure whenever Biafra comes, he will be honored

I beg to differ.
Firstly, Awo never had such interest in taking over anyone's region. If anything, he is well known as a regional-nationalist. His early tussle with Zik, the famous cross-carpeting, attests to this. Awo is a man of "Keep your house clean, I keep mine clean, together, we keep the community clean". I believe if only Ojukwu defended his territory, built bridges with neighbouring lands and consolidated his hold on Benin and other areas won,(this would been cheaper for him) Biafra would be today, probably, Awolowo too might have held on to his word of seccesion...but then, Ojukwu moved westward. I'm still to understand if Ojukwu actually wanted to seccede his small region or take over the whole country?

If at all Major Banjo and Awolowo, both who as at then, were not in the good books of ruling govt, actually decided to take such daring and stupid move to met and plan to have Ojukwu's head and the East, I can say that Ojukwu's head would have been in Lagos before anyone from the East heard of such, considering that both men are political and millitary strategists. Both men had nothing to gain with such move. Till date, Awo nor the West never had vested interest in the East. Yorubas rarely moved eastward pre and post war.
If Awolowo had issues with any region then, it would have been the North. The fact that the North was using its landmass to the advantage of others was Awolowo's problem with them. History has it that Awolowo was always in the opposition and jail because of that undue landmass advantage of the North. It was even said that Awo reached out to Ojukwu.. but did Ojukwu inform him of his plans to march south west? Ojukwu's undoing was not �thinking over why his victory machine Major Banjo decided to turn back.
Banjo had choices. After writing letters to Gowon as you claimed....the best for him would have been to fight for Nigeria to prove his faithfulness, patriotism or sobreity, or return home. He chose to fight for Biafra because he thought the East could have their freedom.

Secondly, If truly Ojukwu wanted to march over the West to Lagos, just to sieze military gains... Then that was his undoing. Clandestine infiltration, aerial attacks, Ondo/Ogun coastline, etc should have been better excuses. How did he think he would seat in Nnewi and Banjo and his colleagues would walk straight into the seat of power, moving far away from the region you want freedom for?.
Instead of him to have a strong footing in his region, win more neighbouring lands and won teritories, curry favours and alliances with neighbouring lands. He would have had access to the coast through Delta, more food and able bodied men in the South south and Middle Belt and consolidate his base. I'm sure he killed Major Banjo for giving him these advices.

You talked about Ojukwu winning the war before Britain, Russia and co came to help...How and with what were you winning? Winning Asaba and Benin with the help of Banjo? I must tell you that such were the ego brushing fairytales your fore-fathers told to feel good about themselves. Nigeria never wanted such stupid loss of lives, Ojukwu begged for it when he advanced past where Banjo and Ifeajuna turned back.

The mercenaries helping Ojukwu were just being mercenaries... there for the money and gains. Some of them were South Africans who knew nothing about sociopolitical strategies. They couldnt have done any better. The UK did not support Biafra because what is there for them to support. The French was only using Ojukwu for thier own self reasons.

The truth is bitter.... Igbos would rather blame the people in Aburi, Ghana than accept that they messed the whole place up. How they particularly think the Yorubas betrayed them is the mystery no one can solve

Maj Banjo was never left to himself... He was always with his companion Biafran soldiers, one of which is Ifeajuna.

The biggest victory on the Biafran side was that of Benin conquest. Banjo won it... I won't know if Ojukwu was not comfortable with his exploits though.

Banjo fought for Biafra to stand.. As at when he won Benin he believed Biafra could stand and guard the lands won and rule over that as the Republic of Biafra. He didn't believe in matching over to Lagos because the initial plan wch he signed up to was to get freedom for the East from Nigeria, and not to match all over Nigeria. Technically, he was right because of the resources they had. If Ojukwu had listened to him, Benin would have been in Biafra today, and not in Nigeria. Biafra would have stood.

Banjo was an Ijebu, he was reluctant to match past Ore, in Ondo state. Ore would have been easy for him, at least compared to Benin and the fact that Ore is quite solitary. But after Ore would have been Ijebu.
So why go farther when you already have what you wanted and needed. Biafra having Benin was over jara sef.

Why invade West, when you already have your East and can secure it against the North? I guess these were Banjos thoughts and that was all Biafra needed.

Awolowo was from Ikenne. I guess he decided to stand up with Nigeria (against Ojukwu even after assuring Ojukwu initially) when Biafran troops were close to Ore and Oguns state, Awolowo's land. Otherwise, the Yorubas had nothing much to gain or loss in the whole issue ab initio. Not until Ojukwu foolishly decided to go against Banjos advice, Biafra was making exploits.

Why was Ojukwu bent on going over the West to Lagos. He could have stood with the Biafra he wanted, and not match over the West. Was he thinking Awolowo and the Yorubas , after giving him his word would stand and watch him invade the West and take more than he requested for ( freedom for the East)?

But then majority of youths know little or nothing about the truth and the folly of their leaders, even before the war...i mean the senseless coup, the tauting and the lack of zeal to make amends after the biased coup.

I am a follower of Big Brother Naija (and other shows, films or movies like it) not for anything but as a social science student, I take it as Sociology and Psychology 701.
One of the reasons I watch is to observe social dynamics, predict human behaviours, psychoanalyse housemates and watch as things go. However, I recently considered these social comments and questions.

1. What influences our choices and decisions as a people?

2. What are our core values and priorities as Nigerians?

My thoughts and the hunch to write this is influenced by comments here on Nairaland and other popular social media.

The "Shithole talk" was a political jab from Trump and people who were brave enough to accept the truth agreed with him.

The Shithole mentality is a prerequisite for a Shithole country. My opinions from the BBN series makes me more convinced it's so imprinted into the DNA of the Nigerian youths.

I understand that humans are wired differently and everyone has reasons for and entitled to their choices, but then, I know not of any sane clime where pple are always happy and proud to make biased and sentimental decisions that are negatively skewed from common sense, merit, due diligence, hardwork, intelligence, versatility, pragmatism.....and every other good attributes. It's sad to find that more Nigerian youths have a high affinity for anyone or anything mediocre, inferior, unrefined, unpolised, lacking in intellectual content, docile, full of inferiority complex, ....and every other stupid reasons.

I can't figure how we Nigerians think physical appearance shld be considered before intelligence, talent, creativity or pragmatism?

More amusing is how the folle deux spreads and the "mumu" bandwagon effect makes people accept and follow what in saner climes would have long been thrashed.
