Wayne Rooney has spoken about the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Manchester United manager for the first time, with the striker claiming his new boss is ‘one of the best in the world’.

Mourinho was formally unveiled as Louis van Gaal’s successor at Old Trafford on Friday, ending a drawn-out process which lasted several months, and the Portuguese will begin building towards a Premier League title tilt when his players return from Euro 2016 and any subsequent summer breaks next month.

Rooney was quizzed on the subject of the incoming United boss at a press conference ahead of England’s clash with Portugal and he was quick to say how eagerly he is anticipating life under the former Chelsea chief.

‘It’s exciting. He’s one of the best managers in the world and knows the Premier League very well,’ said Rooney.

‘I’m looking forward to it.’

The Three Lions skipper also heaped praise on Marcus Rashford following his inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for the European Championship in France.

‘He’s certainly showed what he can do in his first game for England, getting his first goal in the first couple of minutes,’ said Rooney.

‘I think what’s pleasing about him is his attitude. It’s first class and that’s shown around the hotel and on the training pitch and he deserves it.’
