Funding aspect of ASUU's agitation is just a public -opinion controlling machination, the main issues lies in the earned allowance. one of my lecturers told me that if the earned allowance is approved without any renegotiation, he is expecting nothing less than 12 million naira as his own entitlement

Ilorin – Two 500 level students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Ali David and Patrick Effiong, have constructed an aircraft prototype.

The duo told newsmen in Ilorin that they had nurtured the passion to construct the aircraft when they were in 100 level, adding that it was now their final year project.

David noted that many of his colleagues were sceptical when they first broached the subject, adding that they were not deterred by the challenges they faced.

“What we are actually working on is a machine that will lift up itself through the law of aerodynamics and having an engine, a propeller and the fuselage,” he added.

Effiong, on his part, said: “With some of our lecturers backing us, we were motivated; we decided that we can carry out the construction.

“Ali brought the idea to me that he had the dream of constructing an aircraft, but I didn’t really buy the idea then and I thought he had forgotten about it.

“ So when we got to 400 level, he raised the idea again.’’

Also speaking with newsmen, the project supervisor, Dr Tajudeen Ajiboye, said the students had demonstrated a high level of intellectualism inspite of the challenges they faced.

Ajiboye, who said the students were faced with the problems of materials and manpower at the initial stage, commended them for their tenacity to accomplish the project. (NAN)

FG to ASUU: We can’t meet your demands

Hopes of quick resolution of the present face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities were dashed on Tuesday as the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the government has no resources to meet the union demands.



Foreclosing possible truce to the five-week old industrial action that has paralysed academic activities in the nation’s ivory towers, Okonjo-Iwela said the striking university lecturers were asking for #92 billion in extra allowances, maintaining that government lack means of picking the bill.

Speaking in Minna at the annual National Council on Finance and Economic Development meeting, the minister said that ASUU demand was coming at a time government was making efforts at reducing the structure of public expenditures.

The theme of the meeting is: “Restructuring Nigeria’s Finances.”

She said, “At present ASUU wants the government to pay N92 billion in extra allowances when resources are not there and when we are working to integrate past increases in pensions. We need to make choices in this country as we are getting to the stage where recurrent expenditures take the bulk of our resources and people get paid but can do no work.”

She declared that if the demands of the university lecturers are met and “we continue to pay them salaries and allowances we will not be able to provide infrastructure in the universities.”

The minister argued that when she assumed office “the share of recurrent expenditure in our total budgets had increased astronomically. “

“In fact recurrent expenditures accounted for about 77.2 per cent of the federal budget and we are now working to re-balance this ratio,” the minister added.

I'm also a graduate of both polytechnic and University. To me if the analytical gap necessitating this study has do with lack of empirical evidence on the level of job competence/efficiency of University graduate in relation to Poly graduates, then the study subjects are not students/graduates themselves but Human resource managers/personnel managers of various types of firms (having both type of graduates as part of their workforce) in the country. surveying/interviewing these set of people will give snapshot of productivity and proficiency of each type of graduate in their field.

raynoni: Online registration for the KWASU Diploma in Information Technology, Mass Communication and Business Information Technology is out. It is a 15 month program with student having the opportunity to enroll for the IJMB exam in February 2014 and 2015. Students that pass the IJMB in February 2014 will be eligible for admission into KWASU in 2014 direct entry while students that are not successful with that will complete their diploma program in December 2014 and will be eligible for direct entry into KWASU 2015. Its a good plan especially if you don't get admission this year

Few months ago i saw an advertorial on your website pertaining postgraduate studies at KWASU. Then I tried to navigate to your list of academic programmes available for PG studies but i didn't make any considerable headway. Therefore, i had to glue my ears to the air for further information from the Institution. However, to my ultimate dismay, few weeks later the whole advertorial disappeared from your website and no information surface on the whole KWASU postgraduate things again. Please can you enlighten me on the whole scenario as i'm currently on the verge of making my postgraduate studies decision. Thank You

He told me that the NSCC(National Strike Coordinating Committee) which can even consider any plea to call off the strike is not scheduled for meeting until the next 2 weeks. An unthinkable happened earlier today at one of the female hostels in Ahmadu Bello University when a casual cleaner discovered a 7-month old baby inside a dust bin. Presently, all the students in the hostel are undergoing a test to discover the culprit of this barbaric act. Pictures and details later
