Jobs/VacanciesMainstreet Bank Sacks Over 650 Staff by xrazzy(op): 5:20pm On Jun 25, 2012
The management of Mainsteet Bank Plc (formerly Afribank Plc)has terminated the appointment of over 650 staff in its employ.

The exercise took place last Friday through the electronic mails of the affected workers comprising both senior and junior cadres.

Confirming this at a press conference in Lagos on Mondayt,Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria(TUC),Chief John Kolawole, said the action of the bank lacks due process and manifests its height of provocation and lawlessness which is condemnable.

He urged the affected workers not to receive termination letter from the bank as the union is determined to come to their rescue.

He also urged to immediately reverse the termination and other anti-labour acts, failing which his members will shut down the operation of the bank.

‘’Consequently,TUC unequivocally state and demand the reversal of these terminations and other anti-labour acts immediately, failing which TUC will mobilize all its affiliates, allies and resources to shut down completely the operations of the Bank nationwide.

EducationInsecurity: Jigawa, Rivers, Bayelsa Evacuate Students From ABU by xrazzy(op): 10:40am On Jun 25, 2012
Eighty students of Ahmadu Bello University were evacuated from the school in Zaria by their states following recent crisis that rocked parts of Kaduna State without the knowledge of the university authority, the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Mustapha, raised the alarm yesterday.

A statement by VC’s media consultant Waziru Isa Gwantu said Rivers and Jigawa states “whisked away 80 students of the university in suspicious manner” and the institution had already alerted the federal government of the development, as the university’s authorities were not contacted before the students were “smuggled out”.
“Rivers and Jigawa State governments have whisked away 80 students of our university in a suspicious manner on Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23. Four buses belonging to the Jigawa State government with armed mobile police escort forced their way into the Kongo campus of the university where the state’s students numbering 50 were whisked away.

“The Rivers State government, too, on Saturday committed a similar trespass and illegally evacuated students from the state in a 40-seater bus. The bus was also escorted by armed mobile policemen. Neither of the governments of these states consulted the Kaduna State governor, who is the chief security officer of the state or the authorities of the university before evacuating the students. This was why the university management alerted the federal government of this development,” it said.

When contacted, Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s spokesman David Iyofor said he would get back to our correspondent later because he needed to get certain things clear before making comments.

In its response, the Jigawa State Education Commissioner, Professor Haruna Wakili, said it was wrong for ABU authorities to go to press over the issue of the evacuation of its students from the school. Professor Wakili said the right thing for the institution to do was to contact the state government over the matter, adding that the state government did not call a press conference when they evacuated the students for security reasons.

In a related development, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has ordered the immediate evacuation of students of the state’s origin from trouble zones in the country.

The decision, according to him stemmed from the incessant attacks by militants suspected to be Boko Haram on innocent citizens in some parts of the northern states.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Daniel Iworiso yesterday in Yenagoa, the governor said the action was meant to safeguard the lives of its indigenes from the persistent activities of terrorism in the north, especially as witnessed in Kaduna and Yobe in the past one week.

While praying for peace to return to the area, a team including officials from the state’s ministry of Education had already been dispatched to Kaduna state with a mandate to bring back home safely students of Bayelsa origin from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Kobojunkie: FG is working ‘very hard’ to contain security challenges-Jonathan
http://www.channelstv.com/home/2012/06/21/fg-is-working-very-hard-to-contain-security-challenges-jonathan/

President Goodluck Jonathan has given the assurance that the Federal Government is working very hard to overcome Nigeria’s current security challenges.

The president made this known at an interactive session he had in Rio de Janeiro with members of the Nigerian community in Brazil.

President Jonathan is in Brazil to attend the on-going United Nations Earth Summit on Sustainable Development, tagged Rio+20.
Dr Jonathan stated that the first person he called when he arrived in Brazil was the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) in order to be abreast with developments in the troubled Kaduna and Yobe states.

“We have challenges, but they are not insurmountable. We remain fully focused and committed to national development in spite of sponsored lies against this administration” he said.

“We are ready to work together with all of our people to move the country forward. We will work even harder to place concrete realities on the ground that will further prove our sincerity and commitment to all Nigerians,” he pledged.

The President noted that the earlier individuals and groups, especially opposition politicians stopped playing politics with every decision of government, the better for the country.

“One of the problems we have is that some Nigerians play politics with everything, but we cannot destroy our country because of personal political ambitions” he said.

“We now have a constitutional democracy and no one can stay in office forever. It will therefore be best for our nation if we all support whoever is there for the development of the country instead of trying to pull him down by all means.”

Nothing to lose

Meanwhile the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, to the President Dr. Reuben Abati, has also stated that the nation has nothing to lose with the president’s attendance of the summit in Brazil.

Dr Abati on the side-line of the Rio+20 Summit expressed his displeasure on the criticism that has trailed the president’s departure from the country to PUNCH Newspapers.

“It is as if there is nothing you can do to please our people. It is not that Nigeria is going to lose anything by Mr. President’s presence here rather; the country is going to gain a lot from his presence” he stated.

According to Dr Abati, the president is in Brazil “serving the interest of Nigerians; it is not as if he has abandoned his responsibilities.” “The crisis in Kaduna and Yobe occurred almost on the eve of the President’s departure for this event and commitments have been made.”

The aide also noted that the president’s presence in Brazil for Rio+20 summit at a time violence broke out in Kaduna and Yobe states does not mean the President has abandoned his responsibility, adding that the president met with security chiefs before he left the country and he was confident that security agencies were on top of the situation.

He further explained that the president needed to attend the conference because of its importance to Nigeria and because commitments had already been made on his attendance, adding that his presence at the summit was in the best interest of the country.

“The conference, Rio+20, is very important and nobody can doubt that. The issues that will be discussed at this conference are also issues that are relevant to Nigeria’s interest. It is also an opportunity for Nigeria to promote its interest in terms of its place in global community” he said.

Dr Abati noted that security agencies are aptly handling the situation, saying that “in any event, it is not as if the government has abandoned the situation at home. Security agencies are there, they are on top of the situation.”

“Before the President left, he met with security chiefs. The business of leadership cannot just stop because there is a crisis there” he added.

He appealed to the opposition not to always play politics with everything, as he claimed that “if the President had refused to come to Rio, the same persons (opposition parties) will turn around and say that there is an important conference attended by world leaders and the Nigerian President stayed away from it.”
In the same vein, Boko Haram Sect has also assured Nigerians that the group is working extremely hard to make Nigerian ungovernable. The sect made this know...... grin Let's see who is working hard!
