Olusegun Obasanjo– former military leader and Nigerian president who has recently ended his political relationship with the PDP in a dramatic fashion. When I was growing up, old age was a thing of pride. You used to look forward to being respected like “Pa such-and-such” or “Ma so-and-so”. When there was any complex or sensitive issue troubling the village, everyone would head to the elders. Their words were laws then, as they believed that God was listening to their utterances. In my village lived “Papa Paul,” or “Pa Paul,” as he was fondly called. He was once a military man like Obasanjo and was over a hundred years old. Unlike Obasanjo, however, he was sincere and always mindful of his words. He never lied even as, by virtue of his military position and ripe age, he wintessed things no one else had an opportunity to witness. In matters that required bravery and sincerity, communities and clans called him as witness. He had always delivered these, and no one was able to “cast a stone” on him even after he died. OBJ shares some similarities with the late Pa Paul: *.military past, *.advanced age, *.access to information not available to others thanks to their positions, *.both can be seen as leaders thanks to their experience. There also are some major differences: *.Pa Paul may be considered a true elder while OBJ may not, *.Pa Paul was careful while choosing his words while OBJ can seen as flippant, *.Pa Paul told us that old age was a blessing while OBJ tells us thatold age is a regret, *.Pa Paul was seen as a statesman while OBJ is now seen as a national disaster. Can someone please tell OBJ that heis influencing our children with his unguarded utterances? We had expected much more from OBJ. I personally thought that OBJ would retire from politics to become our nationalist since we lack one presently. I thought OBJ would become the “face” of Nigeria on the international level. I thought OBJ would become a “father” to us all. Alas, OBJ has turned into Shakespearean Brutus. Where do we go from here? Who do we run to in times of trouble? Who will tell us howwrong we are without sentiments? Our elders have lost their values. Buthas all hope been lost? God forbid. Our elders should be kept busy and retain their sense of belonging. I’m advocating that the positions of advisers, special advisers and seniorspecial advisers should be reserved exclusively for the elders. The elders’ coucils in local government ares, and authorities on state and federal levels should be responsible for producing such advisers who could make use of their experiences. Also, a home for the aged should be established and well-funded where the likes of OBJ can still hold sway as leaders with national recognition. http://www.naij.com/386680-opinion-can-obasanjo-still-be-trusted-as-our-elder.html |

Just few hours ago, Obasanjo endorsed General Buhari as the man to deliver this nation. I was personally shocked, when I heard the news. This is because, I was expecting Baba to stay at the touch line, and leave Nigerians to study his body language. But the masquerade could not control his dance in the public market. Hence he mistakenly flogged his own mother who isalso a trader in the market. Nigerians, I am left with no option than to tell us that, these ex- generals and their boys are up to something. The issue at hand is not all about the presidential seat. But rather, the national cake (oil blocks). Less Iforget, is it not the same Obasanjo who woke up and hand picked his puppet 2011, who eventually grew like Joseph the messiah of Egypt? Is it not the same Obj that told us 2011, that General Buhari is too old to rule this country? Is it not the same Obj that told us Buhari is a dictator? Somebody should have a rethink like me. We must understand the preacher's language before decoding his message. If Obj can take a swift and prefer General Buhari to Jonathan, a puppet he dedicated his energy and resources to win 2011 election, then as an average Nigerian,we should have a rethink and ask our leaders what is so special in Aso Rock. If leadership is to serve the people, why is it that, the ex-generals finally gang up against their new recruit on account of change. If we're to outline the sins of Mr.President, are the ex- generals not guilty of such sins? One may ask why is SPEAKER taking a swift? My comrades,my father once said, if everybody is clapping before you walked in, courtesy demand you ask why they are clapping, before you join them doing so. Everybody wants change. But I am astonished the way and manner these ex- general joined the train of change. Is it that, this is the first time they heard the word change? If NO, why did they not change this country when they were given opportunity. Why advocating for change now when the puppet body language shows he Will not renew their oilblocks licence Why advocating for changenow, when the puppet purchased equipment to monitor and reduce vandalism. Why advocating for change now, when the strong headed puppet wiped out their ghost names from the civil service pay roll. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet sacked yourboys as corrupt ministers. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet refused to dump Sambo for another puppet. Why advocating for change when he refused to kill Nigerians indiscriminately. But rather he is exploiting all means of dialogue. Unlike your Odi brutal killings and destruction. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet refused to twist governors hands with EFCC to pave his way like you did. Why advocating for change now, when at 72 years, you still tell your children of 50years they are the children of tomorrow. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet refused to give you the fertilizer deal. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet refused to jail your enemies. Why advocating for change now, when the puppet refused to rig election for your daughter. Why advocating for change now, when in your time railways were not working. Why advocating for change, when in your time, our judiciary could not delivered a fair judgement in favour of oppositions. Baba, Nigerians are fed up of you sitting in Otta, deciding their future. We want to decide our destiny with the help of God(Allah). We want to practice true democracy by using our votes to decide our future. Let the good works or antecedents of our leaders speak volume for them. Just after the presidential chat with Mr. President, we discovered that, you, your colleagues, and errant boys, are spreading false informations to pave your way to aso rock. Lastly, I challenge you Baba, # Tinubu,# Atiku ,and others to tell Nigerians you don't have oil blocks. Or youguys are not fighting the last battle to protect your oil blocks. They won't come out and speak my brothers and sisters. They want us to believe they are fighting for us. When they have their own local refineries at their backyards. what's your take nairalanders? |
actually I find it very hilarious hearing some of the APC slogans, though am not a partisan! first it was, #Fe-buhari' and some translated it to mean Fail-buhari' now barely 24 hours that the election date have been shifted to march the new slogan now is #match-buhari, yet another people translate it to mean #match upon buhari, (ie, trample upon) on May handover date, what slogan should we be expecting it will be something like this: #May-buhari be declared winner by the election tribuner (they have matched to court) |
rebranded:keep matching for buhari while we keep voting for GEj! at the end you will keep losing while we keep winning! |
who will read all this ![]() did u say, by force wouldn't he go through election ![]() |

In theopinion article, published in TheGuardian, Professor Nwabueze, a constitutional lawyer and former education minister, President of The Patriots, speaks about why qualification standards for presidentialcandidates, prescribed by Nigerian Constitution, do not comply with the country’s needs.Author is strongly convinced that poorleadership our country has been constantly suffering from is due to lack of qualification and educational background. However, the problem traces its roots much deeper than it may seem. The United States is a perfect exampleof how strong presidential leadership managed to successfully lead the country through the painful process ofdecolonization in XVIII century. The American Revolution was made possible due to the exceptional qualities of the so-called Founding Fathers, who were able to convert American society, its government, values and culture into what The United States of America are now. Each American revolutionary leader was a divine combination of good personality, outstanding education, integrity and devotement to provide for the common good. Through the “brilliance of their thought, the creativity of their politics” and ability to combine “ideas and power, intellectualism and politics” they were leading the country to the better futureserving as the ideal patterns of behavior for the common people. However, Nigerian governmental elite cannot be described in the same way. During 1960, when the country was released from the colonial burden, to 2007 not a single Head of Governmentor his deputy except Dr. Alex Ekwuemeand Chief Ernest Shonekan possesseda certificate of higher education. Eight senior leaders of Nigeria in the period from January 1966 to May 1999, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, were of military educational background. Though they studied in outstanding military schools and, with no doubt, were skilled military officers, such kind of education hadn’t apparently given them enough expertise to run the whole country. The military regimented system formed under the ruling of the retired military men was described as “constitutional dictatorship” that simply prevented Nigeria’s transformation into constitutional democracy.Nigeria is probably one of the few democratic countries in the world experiencing such enormous influence of former military officers on the government and political process in whole. Having received little or no relevant education they were not able to understand the concept of the modern state, which was imposed on African people by European colonialists. As far as the nature of modern democratic state was completely different from what African countries (except Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) used to be in pre-colonial times, its principles and institutions were absolutely unknown to the indigenous people. Thus, the African leader, especially those of military background, could hardly understand how to perform effectively in the totally new circumstances. In other words, leaders with no proper educational and personal background were not able to cope with the challenges Africa faced in the period of decolonization. However, it should be taken into account that the principles of poor leadership are partially imposed by the Constitution, section 131 of which provides:“A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if –(a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth;(b) he has attained the age of forty years;(c) he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party; and(d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.”Section 318(1) concerning the school certificate or its equivalent provides the following definition:“(a) a Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent, or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate, the City and Guilds Certificate; or(b) education up to Secondary School Certificate level (i.e. without the certificate); or(c) Primary Six School Leaving Certificate or its equivalent and –(i) service in the public or private sector in the Federation in any capacity acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission for a minimum of ten years, and(ii) attendance at courses and trainingin such institutions as may be acceptable to the Independent National Electoral Commission for periods totaling up to a minimum of one year; and(iii) the ability to read, write, understand and communicate in the English language to the satisfaction ofthe Independent National Electoral Commission; and(d) any other qualification acceptable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.”Nowadays, when fake certificates are not uncommon and level of secondaryeducation is sliding down, what Sections 131(d) and 318(1) encourage is illiteracy among the senior leaders of the country.Mr. Nwabueze believes that the certificate of higher education or its equivalent should be a minimum qualification standard for presidential candidates and other senior officials. In 2010 Section 131(d) underwent some changes: the words “school certificate level or its equivalent” were removed and substituted with “tertiarylevel and obtained the relevant certificates. Section 318(1) was also amended and therefore provided the following definitions:“(a) Ordinary National Diploma or its equivalent; or(b)Nigerian Certificate in Education or its equivalent; or(c)Higher School Certificate or its equivalent; or(d)Advanced School Certificate or its equivalent; or(e) Higher National Diploma or its equivalent.”However, the amendments were lost at some stage of the process and never became law. It’s a shame for Nigeria desperately needs it now. http://www.naij.com/ |
