OF IGBOS IN BENUEculled from the Nigerian Sun newspapers of April 12, 2014By Chris Oji.They are torn between two worlds. Being of the Igbostock, their soul is in the Southeast, but their bodies and homes are in Benue State, in the Northcentral. That is not all. In Benue, where they are quartered, more for political considerations than for cultural reaons, they lament their lack: no roads, no water, hardly any sign of modern life. They are Igbos of the Ezza, Izzi and Effium stock. Their kith and kin are in other parts of the Southeast, particularly Ebonyi State. They claim they are not fewer than one million scattered in four local governments of Benue State. And for close to 50 years since they were excised from their kinsmen, they have been living primitive lives.Their pathetic plight is that the authorities in Benue, from the state to the local governments, have not seen them as part of the state ostensibly because they speak Igbo. On the other hand, the Ebonyi Stategovernment where they should have rightly belonged is helpless as they are not under its area of administration and authority. The people allege that since their inclusion into Benue State they have not felt any government presence. None of their people were considered for employment in any of the two tiers of government. Indeed, in their lamentation, they are not in the scheme of things as far as government business is concerned in Benue.“We have been on our own. No roads, no water, no electricity, no employment. We just wander about to help ourselves in our own way,” an octogenarian, Pa Nwankwo Aloh said, clutching a bucket in search of water.Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam is said to have acknowledged their existence and concerns, even promising to address them, but that was during his first term in office. Also, Mr Ogbu Igelega, spokesman of Ado Local Government Area, one of the councils where the Igbos are found in Benue, told our reporter on the telephone that one of the obstacles to the development of the Igbo-speaking areas of the stateis their difficult terrain. Igelega said this makes access difficult, adding that the few places which donot present such challenges get government attention. The spokesman cited the example of Etenyi which has 90 per cent Igbo population, saying the community “is being electrified at the cost of N17m”. He also said the Igbos occupy “important offices” in the council, adding that the assistant head of Revenue Development is Igbo, while the Senior Special Assistant on Inter-ethnic Relations isalso Igbo. The reporter met with the president, Benue Igbo Development Union, Nweke Cedrick Ifeanyi who narrated their ordeal. He said all they want is for theBenue State government to accept them since fate has lumped them together. He is of the view that if they can be given a sense of belonging, they would all wholeheartedly join in the effort to develop the state.Ifeanyi does not expressly condemn their inclusion in Benue State, be he said if the other ethnic groups do not want them in Benue, the Federal Governmentshould set up a machinery immediately to return them to their kith and kin in the Southeast, particularly Ebonyi State. He sent a save-or-soul message to the Senate president, David Mark and Governor Suswam to come and save them from “this ignoble plight”, adding: “We are neither here nor there.”In Nweke’s words: “The Igbos in Benue State particularly those in Ado, Oju, Obi and Okpoku LGAsof the state were in existence before the advent of Christian religion in Nigeria. The Igbo found in Benue are: Umuezeokoha, Umuezeoka, Oriuzor, Umuoghara, Amaekka and Amaezekwe all in Ezza communities, Izzi, Ezzamgbo and Effium, these are the people who would have been in present-day Ebonyi State but due for the fact that the Nigerian government then carved us into Benue in order to use our population to suppress our Eastern population. Apart from the Ezza-speaking clan, particularly the people of Umuezeokoha that has over 300 villages, if you are to calculate the number of Igbo-speaking villages, you find out that we are more than 600 villages because three of the biggest markets in our area areall in the Igbo-speaking part. The markets are as follows: Inikiri Ichari, Iddah, Iduokpe.”But in all these places, we have been facing a lot ofdeprivation of our fundamental human rights to the extent that we do not have any project attracted by the government, be it local, state or federal. In fact we have become the rejected part of the country because local government identification letters are not given to us any longer.“Before now we used to witness governmental attention in everything during and after colonial administration but since after the civil war we were dumped by the successive governments just because of our language difference.“We do not have any drinking water, our source of water here is a dam which Fulani herdsmen do carry their cow to drink at the same place with us because the water is not covered.“In the process of stopping them from coming to thewater with their cow, it later resulted in the loss of five lives.“We have no representative in local, state and federal levels. Mosquito nets that were given free of charge to roll back malaria have been sold to our people at the sum of N6,000 each. We have become slaves to our brothers because of language difference. No hospital, let alone health centre, we are seeing hell here in Benue State because of our language. I do not know whether it is a curse for someone to have fallen under a particular tribe like Ezza, Izzi, Ezzamgbo and Effium.“Our women are dying every day during labour. Alsoour children are dying for lack of polio immunisationprogramme and other medical treatment needed to be given to a child at a tender age.“Our roads are not passable. We have contributed so much not only to the development of Benue Statebut Nigeria at large. At least a place with over one million people in population has no primary school. We are therefore as a matter of urgency calling on federal government, our Southeastern brothers and any other corporate bodies to rush to our aid before water will come to our neck.It is obvious that if we are speaking the same language with them we wouldn’t have found ourselves in this forbidden and undeserved situationlike this one we are now.An area with over 50 polling units, but we are benefiting nothing even on every of our market daysthey do come and sell their ticket (tax). We have been regarded as slaves in the country of our birth and our fore-fathers, we are also calling on our ablepresident of the senate David mark to come to our help because after God we also contributed in making him what he is today and even Gabriel Suswan. We can never regret why we are Igbos or deny beingIgbo people before we are recognized in the country of our fore-fath |

Embattled Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, has left Nigeria for Israel despite the furore generated by the controversial purchase of N225 million bullet-proof vehicles for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA. Competent sources told Vanguard that the beleagued minister is reported to have summoned courage and flew to Israel of on Tuesday a day ahead of President Jonathan's visit to the country, where he is expected to perform some spiritual rites and engage in some bilateral deals. who has already been subpoenaed by the two chambers of the National Assembly to appear and answer questions on her role in the purchase of the cars, will also come under the searchlight of the special probe panel raised by President Gooodluck Jonathan. The three-man Presidential team that will grill the minister is made up of the immediate past Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Isa Sali Bello, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dakusi (rtd) and AVM Dick Iruenebere (rtd). Vanguard learnt that the decision by the minister to travel to Israel in the midst of the car con was to reduce the tension generated by the negative development and to give her some time off to pray to God while in the Holy Land. But there were doubts in the Presidency last night as to whether the minister would be part of the Presidential team to seal the Bilateral Air Services Agreement, BASA, with Israel in Tel Aviv given the negative publicity the car deal had given the country since it broke out last week. But sources close to the minister said that she was not bothered about the development, as she was said to have received assurance from influential persons close to the Presidency that she would not be dropped because of her political worth to the system. A source close to the Presidency told Vanguard that the decision to query Oduah and eventually raise the panel to probe her did not come easy, as top Peoples Democratic Party members and some aides of the President prevailed on him not to do anything against the minister, given the role she played in the election of Mr. President. It was learnt that after a heated debate, the President bowed to some of his aides, who reasoned that not taking any disciplinary action against the minister would send the wrong message to the world that the President was condoning corruption. Some of the aides were said to have impressed upon Jonathan the need to act fast in taking action to assuage doubting Nigerians about his avowed war against corruption and to send a strong message to others in the system who might engage in similar acts. A source said, "The President finally agreed to set up the panel to probe Oduah after some powerful elements in the PDP BoT and the party tried in vain to dissuade him from taking any disciplinary action against the minister. "The argument of the minister's protagonists is that she is a star performer, who has changed the aviation landscape in Nigeria and has been very useful to the party and the President, as the leader of the Neighbour-to Neighbour group that has been mobilising for the President during elections. The minister is said to have also split her colleagues who are also divided on what should be done to her following the car deal imbroglio. Sources said many ministers, who are apparently fed up with Oduah's excesses, are pushing for serious action against her while those in her support think otherwise, blaming political enemies for her ordealhttp://m.naij.com/news/50446.html |

The Federal Government has, through the Federal Capital Development Authority, marked the national secretariat of the New Peoples Democratic Party at the Maitama District in Abuja for demolition. Inscriptions on the wall and the gate of the building on 4, Oyi River Crescent, show that it was marked on October 11, 2013. Our correspondent, who visited the area on Monday, noticed that an agency of the FCDA, Development Control, used red ink to inscribe the demolition notice on the wall and the gate of the building. However, an Armoured Personnel Carrier, hitherto stationed close to the building and a Police Monitoring van have been removed. Only a riot policeman was seen moving round the area when our correspondent visited. However, the FCDA has unsealed the Adamawa State Governor's Lodge, where the New PDP relocated after its Oyi River Crescent office was sealed off by the police. Investigations by Punch showed that the FCDA took the action when the New PDP said it had accepted the ruling of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which on Friday ordered it to stop using the name, PDP, in its activities. The lodge is located on Katsina Ala Street in Maitama District of Abuja. It was sealed off two weeks ago by the FCDA on the grounds that the New PDP was using it for political activities, an action it said was against the approval granted for the building of the lodge. A private security man, who spoke with our correspondent at the lodge, said that policemen drafted to the building left last weekend. "The policemen stopped coming since Thursday last week and we don't know why they stopped coming. But we have not seen them since then," he said. Five riot policemen were drafted to the building by the FCDA in a move aimed at stopping the faction of the PDP from using the building for its meetings. Speaking on the plan to demolish the secretariat, the spokesperson for the New PDP, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, said it was an attempt by the Minister of the FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed, to satisfy his paymaster. He also saidthe minister was determined to weaken the opposition, an action he said would fail. Eze said, "This will show the level of desperation which the PDP officials and the FCT Minister want to use to attack and kill opposition in the country. But it will fail. It can't weaken us."What is the reason for the move to demolish a building that has its plan and other documentation that are intact, including the certificate of occupancy. This is nothing but desperation. "But it is expected. A government that has no value for the rule of law can go to any extent to perpetrate any evil. We wait to see what would happen next." Perhaps, in order to weaken the opposition, the Federal Government started using the FCDA to threaten the members of the New PDP some weeks ago. The FCT administration had revoked the Certificate of Occupancy of a building belonging to Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso, one of the seven governors behind the New PDP. An event centre, A-Park, owned by Sen. Aisha Al-Hassan, a staunch member of the faction has also been marked for demolition. The event centre is located near the OAU Quarters in Maitama District. A former Governor of Gombe State, Sen. Danjuma Goje, had his security details withdrawn for allegedly showing support to the PDP faction. The security details of a former Governor of Kwara State, Sen. Bukoka Saraki, who is also a member of the faction, were withdrawn by the Police authorities. Saraki is also being investigated by the Special Fraud Unit, an arm of the Police, over alleged bonds he took while in office. It was also gathered that the Police in Bayelsa State had declared the chairman of the faction in the state, Chief Richard Kpodo, and secretary, Sivi Godswill, wanted. Apart from them, other high ranking members of the party in the state were said to have been declared wanted for allegedly belonging to a political party alien to the Independent National Electoral Commissionhttp://m.naij.com/news/50235.html |
Igbo think tank Aka Ikenga this afternoon frowned at what it considers to be a campaign of calumny against Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah. The group in a statement signed by its President, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, observed “with dismay the concerted effort of a despicable group led by a discredited former Minister of Aviation to ‘sack’ the current Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah from her post.” Aka Ikenga is believed to be referring to Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who has been preoccupied with the campaign for Ms. Oduah’s ouster. According to Aka Ikenga: “It is a shame that a man who suffers from hallucinations of his past and present life will lead a motley crowd of revellers in demanding the sack of a minister. It is even more mind boggling when one remembers that the main reason for the sack is the death of some of our fellow citizens in a chartered flight which the only authoritative body has attributed to engine failure! “Was the minister derelict in her function? “Did she fail to appoint the right people to their various positions? The decision to fly that day was done by a particular person! Was it the minister, Director General of NCAA or who? “This campaign of calumny is clearly borne out of bitterness as the Minister of Aviation made the know nothing former minister of Aviation a Lilliput by her achievements which the hatchet group derisively describes as a renovation! This same group even fought against the infrastructural changes at our gateway airports! “Today, the swan song is about purchase of official cars! Have you checked the budget for the year 2013? “Have you checked whether the due process was followed? “Let it be known to all and sundry that the Ministry of Aviation is busy changing the outlook of our airports to the credit of Mr President while some hirelings are disgracefully distributing syndicated falsehood. “Leave Stella Oduah Alone! “You cannot get to Mr President by peddling falsehood.” •Phohttp://newsexpressngr.com/news |
boyega Akinsanmi The Lagos State Government Thursday faulted a suit filed by seven of the Igbo that were recently relocated out of the state against it, saying the suit might have been politically motivated. Just after the state government reacted to the lawsuit, two other Igbos, Mr. Osondu Agwuogo and Mr. Dandy Eze, had jointly instituted a fresh suit against the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeola Ipaye. The seven persons that sued the state government on behalf of others are Joseph Aniebonam, Osondu Mbuto, Osondu Agwu, Nnenna Ogbonna, Emily Okoroariri, Friday Ndukwe and Onyeka Ugwu. They are demanding N1 billion as damages for the alleged forcible relocation. Ipaye told THISDAY that the state government was not perturbed by the series of cases being instituted against it by some Igbos, who claimed to have been forcibly relocated from the state. The attorney-general also said the government was not moved by the N1 billion suit as it would appropriately respond to the challenge. He, therefore, expressed readiness of the state government to defend the case and it would respond to it appropriately. According to him, “We are not disturbed by the lawsuit. The suit could be politically motivated. There is the possibility. It seems it is being fuelled. We are going to respond to it.” In another suit filed at the Ikeja High Court, by the applicants sought a declaration that the forcible removal of the applicants by the first respondent and the eventual dumping of them being Igbo are illegal, unconstitutional and a blatant violation of the applicants’ right to move freely throughout Nigeria and reside in any part thereof. They also sought another declaration that the arrest and eventual dumping of applicants in Onitsha, Anambra State, are unconstitutional. They demanded N10 million as damages for each of the affected persons. Also reacting to the lawsuit, the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Joe Igbokwe, condemned the decision of the plaintiffs to go to court. He added that the lawsuit was politically motivated, noting that those relocated out of the metropolis could not have garnered courage and resources to sue the state government. Igbokwe accused the Anambra State Government of politicising the relocation of the Igbos due to the November 14 governorship election. authorities of Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State heaved a sigh of relief on Friday, September 20 when the mystery behind the headless corpses they usually picked in communities under the local government was resolved with the arrest of Seyi Akinrinola when he when to pick a human head he hung on a tree in the bush at Igbo-Oloyin area, Ibadan, Oyo State. Also arrested was Ajitoni Ogundeji whom Akinrinola claimed prompted his search for a head. On that day, policemen did a lot of work to contain the large crowd which besieged Ojoo division of Oyo State Police Command to catch a glimpse of the human head and the suspects in possession of it. Despite the odour from the decomposed head, the crowd stayed put, as many more rushed to join as soon the news spread to them. The head was obviously that of a female. The flesh around had eaten off, except for a little which was at the back, and to which the few strands of hair that remained were attached. Akinrinola thought he was smart. To avoid being detected, after securing a head, the suspect decided to keep it on the tree until it would be dry. But the fart he thought he released silently was loud enough for others to hear. At about 10: 00a.m. same day, the divisional Police Officer in charge of Ojoo division, Musiliu Doga, received an information that a human head was sighted on a tree. He promptly went out with his men to survey the place. After he confirmed the information he received to be true, the DPO reportedly put some of his men on ground to lay ambush for the person that would come to pick the head. The plan worked out. According to the Police Public Relation Officer of the command, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, "About an hour, after the policemen laid an ambush, they saw a man who approached the site where the head was hung on a motorcycle. He got down from the bike and, holding a polythene bag, went to where the head was hung and put it the bag. As he made to go, the policemen emerged from hiding and apprehended him." Upon arrest, Akinrinola reportedly pleaded to be handled gently as he had an accomplice. He disclosed to the policemen that it was a native doctor he consulted for help who requested for the human head in order to help him prepare a charm that would serve as bullet proof. In an interview, 30-year-old Akinrinola, who said he was residing at Demilokun area of Igbo Oloyin, disclosed that he was once a butcher but left the job to become a farmer. He denied killing the owner of the head, saying that it belonged to a mad woman whose corpse he saw along Igbo Oloyin road. "I am a member of Oodua People's Congress and also a farmer. When we used to go to Saki side to buy cows, armed robbers used to trouble us so much on the way. I left the butcher job about five years ago but I intend to return to it. "Ogundeji was like a brother in my area, so I told him that I needed a charm that would prevent bullet from entering my body in case I am shot at. He told me that he would do it for me if I could bring a human head. "I found the woman's body along Igbo Oloyin road where she died. We did not cut the head; we just pulled it off the neck." When questioned on how he knew the corpse was that of a mad woman, Akinrinola replied: "She was a mad woman, even the villagers confirmed it. I was the one who removed the head at about 7.30p.m. about three weeks ago. After cutting it, I travelled, but I learnt that local government officials came to remove the headless body. Ogundeji is a hunter; that was why I believed he would know what to do to prepare bullet proof charm. Two days before my arrest, Ogundeji came to ask whether I got a head and I told him I have found one. I hung the head on a tree beside the house I was living because it was smelling." On whether he was an armed robber who needed to protect himself against an onslaught by law enforcement agents, the suspect said: "Never. I have never robbed in my life. My lineage had never been involved in robbery. My arrest is a great shame because I don't even understand myself. I have never done such a thing in my life. I am an orphan because my parents are dead. How was he caught? Akinrinola gave an answer: "I believe people from my community who saw the head informed the police."
