Russian military helicopters have opened fire on a convoy of rebel mercenaries already more than half way towards Moscow in a lightning advance after seizing a southern city overnight, Reuters has confirmed.

It follows earlier claims by the Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin that his forces had been fired on by artillery and helicopters.

Fighters from Yevgeny Prigozhin’s private Wagner militia were in control of Rostov-on-Don, a city of more than a million people close to the border with Ukraine, and were rapidly advancing northwards through western Russia.

A Reuters journalist saw army helicopters open fire at an armed Wagner column that was advancing past the city of Voronezh with troop carriers and at least one tank on a flatbed truck. The city is more than half way along the 680-mile highway from Rostov to Moscow.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed that the embattled CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has resumed duty after his annual leave abroad Amid Tight security within the premises of his office.

Disclosing this in a press statement by the Director, Public Relations, Osita Nwanisobi, the CBN said Emefiele resumed duty on Monday (today).


The statement read, “The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has resumed duty after his annual vacation abroad. Mr. Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed today, Monday, January 16, 2023.

The Governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the year scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.

“Mr. Emefiele remains committed to performing the task beforw him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari.


“While thanking the public for keeping faith with the Bank, we urge Nigerians to continue to support the policies of the Bank aimed at ensuring a stable financial system

At least eight Fulanis were allegedly killed in the early hours of Sunday, in an attack by a vigilante group at Wasinmi village, in Irewolede local government area of Osun State.

Reports reaching DAILY POST indicates that an attack was carried out on the village at about 2am on Sunday.

Those reportedly killed were identified as Alhaji Samo Wasinmi, head of the family, Alhaja Belu, Alhaja Waso, Alhaja Adamo, Maryam Ibrahim, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammed, Mumini Ibrahim and Mumini Abdullahi.

No fewer than six herders were on Saturday night killed when unknown gunmen raided a settlement in Wasinmi village, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
