1) A client might say they want something but that doesn't mean you should be a code monkey who simply takes orders. If you talk to the client "well", 99% of the time, they will back down. At least that's what works for me. It is taking the content on the other pages down, thus causing people to scroll. Major problem for those on mobile devices. Maybe if you put it to him like that (assuming you haven't already), maybe they will budge.

2) At least N100K
Webmasters / Re: School Portal ...... Any Help by yawatide(f): 5:50pm On Sep 10, 2013
Depends on features and how much they are paying you. I personally would recommend a hybrid - build from scratch but provide a CMS solution for "non techie" pages that may change often. That way, you are not called every so often to add "coma" to a page, if you know what I mean. Of course, this all depends on how much is being offered.
Webmasters / Education Ministry Website Suspended Amid ASUU Strike by yawatide(f): 5:25pm On Sep 10, 2013
http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/education-ministry-website-suspended-amid-ASUU-strike/

The website of the Federal Ministry of Education, www.fme.gov.ng, is down. Although it could not be ascertained how long it has been down, our correspondent, who visited the website on Monday, had stumbled on the message, “This account has been suspended.’’

No information was placed on the site to tell visitors that it has moved to another domain and no link was provided to redirect those in search of information about the educational system to a new one.

Besides, another website attributed to the ministry online, fmegovng.org, is also “ailing’’ as the message on the site read, “This domain name will be on Godaddy Auctions soon.”

Visitors to any of the two portals in search of reports related to the ongoing industrial action by university teachers may be disappointed as the ministry literally has no official website to inform interested members of the public.

A check on some education parastatals in the country shows that some of them are fast taking a cue from the supervisory ministry that is saddled with the responsibility for defining and shaping the structure of the education system in Nigeria.

For instance, a visit to the website of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, www.ncceonline.org, showed that the information on the site was far from being rich. The “About Us’’ is the only section that the website has, while the welcome page contains two articles which only informed visitors on how to go about securing loan to study in higher institutions of learning abroad.

No mention was made of its activities, pertaining to the regulation of colleges of education in the country, as well as the issuance of the National Certificate of Education – the minimum certificate that qualifies one to teach in the country.

The National Educational Research and Development Council’s website, www.nerdc.gov.ng, which prides itself as the “think-tank of Nigerian education’’ is only a little better than that of the NCCE.

The first information that caught the attention of the correspondent on the welcome page of the website on Monday was the date on it. The date on the site simply read Thursday, September 05, 2013.

A click on the “Achievement’’ section of the site, which was expected to give the track record of the council from 2005 to 2012, showed it was empty. The message on it read, “This page is awaiting update.” A similarly information was posted on the “Press Release” section.

Besides, the website managers did not deem it fit to input the contact person and phone number of the designatedofficial at its area office on 8, Orlu Street, Garki, Abuja as they simply left the spaces meant for it blank.

While NERDC made an appreciable effort to make its digital engagement social with its presence on Facebook, it was observed that its account on the social service was also largely neglected. In the course of this year, the handlers of the Facebook page had only managed to post messages on it four times.

The National Library of Nigeria, created to serve as the nation’s “intellectual store house and databank,” has a rather poor outlook online. It was observed that information pertaining to its services, such as bibliography control, cataloguing in publication, training and skills development, were not available on its website, www.nln.gov.ng.

Besides, all the links to all its social media pages, with the exception of its Facebook page were broken and did not connect to the social accounts they were supposed to.

But while it appears that the NCCE and NERDC may have taken after the Federal Ministry of Education in terms of managing its digital presence, some of the parastatals under it are putting in efforts to have functional online tracks.

The National Mathematical Centre has a functional and updated website. The website, nmcabuja.org, does not only appear to fall into the good books of its managers, but it also carry visitors along with its upcoming events. Checks on the website offered information about conferences, workshops and seminars lined up.

However, the NMC may need to take advantage of one or a number of social networks to engage its audience with a view to giving adequate publicity to its activities.

Essentially, the Federal Ministry may need to learn a lesson or two from the Ghanaian Ministry of Education that has a regularly updated and fully functional portal for sundry issues bordering on education in the West African nation.

Apart from being up-to-date, the portal, www.moe.gov.gh, contains requisite statistics and other resources that could help local stakeholders, as well as international organisations deliver on key educational indicators in the country’s various educational sectors.

In general:
1) Remove the fading photos from all pages other than the home page

2) What is the difference b/w "sign up" and "forum" links in the footer

3) It would be nice if you could customize the forum to have 90% of the look and feel of the main site. Right now, it's like I am going to another site

4) In the fading photos section, some portions of the blue text of the "akande" picture is bleeding into the actual image

In firefox:
When I click items in the nav, nothing happens

In IE8:
Hovering over "We diagnose and treat" in the nav results in an orange hover effect that doesn't cover the entire white font

OP:

Then why not have a teaser line or paragraph, with a link that says something like, "read more..."? I shouldn't have to download your list of services by default. Besides, your services page should have a summary (as in, titles) of your services. Give me that at the very least.

Good luck!
Webmasters / Re: Please Review by yawatide(f): 1:26pm On Sep 09, 2013
1) I would move the social icon, in addition to making it smaller, to the top, upper right corner of the page

2) Why are services and activities in PDF form? Make that HTML and put it in the appropriate sections. At least that way, they can be spidered by the search engines and indexed

I am going to need the actual url of the site.

Based on the code and screenshot, I am going to say that your (white) background image is too short but I need to see the actual site in action before I can authoritatively come to that conclusion.

What were the terms of the contract or gentleman's agreement? If none, you don't have to pay.

Lesson of the day: Always have a contract, no matter how friendly you are with the person you are working with.
Webmasters / Re: Standard Quote For Building A CMS by yawatide(f): 4:22pm On Sep 03, 2013
I prefer joomla as it has a low learning curve, based on personal experience, for the client. As per quote, it will depend on features. Having said that, because of customization, I would say nothing less than N200K, base price.
Webmasters / Re: My Site Is Not Recognised By Google. by yawatide(f): 12:33pm On Sep 01, 2013
How long ago is, "just launched"? If you are doing organic SEO, it can take more than few weeks for your site to even register on any of its pages.

Google will probably index your site, depending on when last it "danced", within the next 30 days or so. Ranking will depend on how relevant your site is. What I would do is google for sites in your niche, check out the top 5 for the search and see what they are doing that you aren't doing.

good luck!

As someone who reads from left to right, I find the social media icons, top left...and fixed, distracting. I would suggest moving it to the right.

Interesting. I haven't used Publisher in ages and back then, you couldn't do it. I guess you learn something new every day.

Hmm, I could have sworn it was free. I also could have sworn this was the script I have been using for some time.

Try:

Webmasters / Re: How To Convert .pub Format File To .jpg? by yawatide(f): 8:47pm On Aug 25, 2013
I don't think this is possible. PUB to PDF? Sure. PUB to JPG or PNG, probably not possible.

Why do you need to do this?
Webmasters / Re: Mobile Phone/device Detect Php Code by yawatide(f): 8:46pm On Aug 25, 2013
This has always worked for me:
http://detectmobilebrowsers.mobi/

Eventually though, you should look at building your sites such that it is just one site that serves up the same content. Think twitter bootstrap and foundation.

Good luck!

Webmasters / Re: GTB Website- Joomla, Wordpress Or Dreamweaver? by yawatide(f): 11:10am On Aug 15, 2013
For a site like this, I would probably do a combo of a customized CMS and a regular site - I assume content pages will need to be updated from time to time by non-techies and regular techies have better things to do than to go add a "coma" to a page.
Webmasters / Re: Rate This Website by yawatide(f): 3:04pm On Aug 13, 2013
1) Don't use popups for your photo gallery. Use one of the many javascript libraries
2) Add a margin b/w the bottom of the page and the black footer
3) Try and add some pictures on each of the pages.

Thanks,

Itoro

Everything to oyinbo boils down to the almighty dollar and reputation. Whereby either is threatened, expect them to react like a cat that is backed into a corner. If you have been in that situation, I am sure you know that it is best to back down wink

Webmasters / Re: Let's Discuss SSL Certificates by yawatide(f): 5:23pm On Aug 10, 2013
I have used SSL certificates from hostmonster on 2 sites so far. I don't know what to say about integration as I just paid for it (around $140 a year) and they tell you it will be active in 24 - 48 hours. Hostmonster's customer support has also been spot on for me, going back 8 years.

If the site you are working on will require an SSL, don't hesitate to insist that the client gets it.

Webmasters / Paypal Tests Mobile Payments Using Your Face For Verification by yawatide(f): 1:38pm On Aug 09, 2013
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57597555-93/paypal-tests-mobile-payments-using-your-face-for-verification/

PayPal is rolling out a new trial for British consumers to see if they really can leave their wallets at home.

Recently kicking off in London borough Richmond upon Thames, the test includes 12 different merchants set up to accept PayPal payments, according to the company.

Using the PayPal app for iOS, Android, or Windows Phone, shoppers can see nearby participating merchants highlighted on their mobile phones. They can then "check into" a certain store by clicking on its name and pay for an item by sliding an animated pin down the screen. The person's name and photo then pops up on the store's payment system. After the customer agrees to pay for the item, the cashier clicks on the person's photo to send the payment through.

The customer receives an alert via phone with the amount paid along with PayPal's usual receipt.

Merchants who've joined the test program include Cook & Garcia, The Farmery, The Tea Box, The Bingham Hotel, Revolution, Caffé Paolo, The Cedar Coffee Shop, Urban Diner, Pier 1 Fish and Chips, Noble Jones, Hill Café, and Knot Coffee and Pretzel.

"We've been using PayPal's check-in service within the business for several months, and have found it really efficient," Cook & Garcia owner Richard Garcia said in a statement. "Customers don't have to worry about having cards, cash or change, just their phones -- it is the quickest transaction through the till, which means less queues and we never have to turn down a sale, both of which are great for business."

Though only a dozen retailers are part of the test, PayPal expects that more than 2,000 merchants will be able to accept the PayPal payments by the end of 2013, according to Sky News. And PayPal has grander ambitions beyond this year.

"This is another step on the journey towards a wallet-less high street, where customers will be able to leave their wallet or purse at home and pay using their phone or tablet," Rob Harper, PayPal head of retail services, said in a statement. "We predict that by 2016 this will become a reality."
