Webmasters / Whither Punch New Website? by yawatide(f): 12:23pm On Oct 17, 2015 |
Seems like it has been down for at least 2 weeks now. Considering how popular it is among Nigerian reads and the awards it has won in the past, they might want to rectify things quick, before people start losing interest. |
Webmasters / Problems With Daily Independent Newspaper Website by yawatide(f): 2:50pm On Oct 13, 2015 |
To whom it may concern: For at least 2 months now, I have discovered that when I visit dailyindependentnig.com, a few seconds after the site loads, a new window automatically opens, with the site opening again. What I actually find both interesting and scary about all this is that the "parent window" loads an ad while the "child window" reloads the site. When using the "child wndow", after staying on that window for a few seconds, the whole open new window/load ad in previous window thing happens again. This only happens with your site and so I know (or at least hope) that it isn't my lappie. I can only draw the conclusion that it is a case of publisher advertisement gone wrong. Either way, please look into this as other than when I stopped visiting your site daily for about 2 months when the site went down some year ago, I have been a faithful daily visitor to your site for nigerian news since 2007. I would hate to put back your site on my black list. Besides, others might be experiencing this as well but have not spoken up. Sincerely, Yawa |
Webmasters / Re: Help!! I Need Advice On How To Create A Website For A Company by yawatide(f): 2:46pm On Sep 03, 2015 |
My assumption: You took this job knowing fully well that you didn't have the skill set to see it through. If I am correct: 1) You should have been honest with the person upfront, having (hopefully) obtained the requirements first. I personally have gone through this before. Experience has taught me that the client will have more respect for you this way, than the other way around. 2) Why not employ someone who actually knows what they are doing? You might look at it as spending money but trust me, you will be saving money (and your reputation) in the long run 3) If the company is a "small rising company" as you've stated, I personally can't see how it will take 1 month to implement their site. It would be nice to see the requirements 4) Personally, I am concerned for the success of this project. If I were you I would man up, explain things to the client, apologize and return any deposits/full payments they may have made to you. Again, it's about your reputation. Forget the immediate gratification Good luck! 1 Like |

Webmasters / National Assembly Site NOT Implemented With A CMS? by yawatide(f): 12:57pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
Was doing some casual browsing when I decided to check on the website of our red and green chambers - www.nass.gov.ng I must confess that it looks better than it did over the last 8 years. Then I did what I like to do best - view the source to see the code. I didn't see the usual "wp" references that are typical of MANY Nigerian-based websites in general. Question: 1) Does anyone know who implemented this site? 2) Are they using a CMS? If so, which? Note: I am not bashing the use of WP but our tendency to abuse it. Obviously for a site such as NASS, I would expect changes to be made pretty frequently. Any CMS therefore makes perfect sense as those updating the site won't necessarily have the coding know-how. |
Webmasters / Re: Why Responsive Design Sucks And Reduces The Mobile Friendliness Of Your Site. by yawatide(f): 12:32am On Jul 26, 2015 |
OP: 1) If I am arguing, as you say, for you, then perhaps you shouldn't have mentioned this as one of your reasons 2) Again, stop referencing other websites, in particular, google and facebook. Be original. I bet you, if you became real popular and could hire 1 million people and one day you woke up and said, "the only good websites are those that weigh at least 1 GB", you would get a following 3) Of course those guys won't go without a website for some time to come. I said what I said to make a point - refer to #2 above |
Webmasters / Re: Why Responsive Design Sucks And Reduces The Mobile Friendliness Of Your Site. by yawatide(f): 2:34pm On Jul 25, 2015 |
My humble rebuttal: 1) Depends on the coder and/or the technologies used. Let's not forget that the purpose of RWD is to emphasize content over design. Where you have an RWD site that is heavy on graphics, you have a problem. 2) Again, depends on coder. RWD is all about media queries. If you don't master this and are not comfortable with using a reputable theme, don't bother going for the technology 3) Just because Google and facebook don't use it shouldn't be justification for you not to use it. Do you know their justifications for not doing so? So if they decided not to have a website at all, would you also be willing to say owning a website is bad just because they don't have one? I think we should be careful about following the crowd/herd and strive to be our own person 14 Likes |
Webmasters / Re: Images And Copyright Issues by yawatide(f): 6:45pm On Jan 12, 2015 |
Unless specifically stated, I don't think there is anything wrong with you copying an image for your site and adding a "credit" line right underneath it. I have done this on a few ecommerce sites that I have implemented in the past and so far, no issues. HNY! |

Webmasters / Re: Facebook Is Killing Website by yawatide(f): 8:08pm On Dec 31, 2014 |
Due to our busy schedules, many have now resorted to eating out at fast food joints. Having said that, some people still cook and eat at home. The former might be fast and easy, but in the long run, it is more expensive and not as healthy as the latter. My point: Sure, facebook might be popular. IMHO though, it is like having a yahoo.com or gmail.com email address for your business - it says you either don't have the money to invest in a site of your own or that you don't see the value in same. Spend the money, create your own web presence. Use social media to complement, and not replace, your traditional, conventional website. Happy new year! 2 Likes |
Webmasters / Re: Building A Static Website With Java: How Possible? by yawatide(f): 8:29pm On Sep 15, 2014 |
static vs dynamic has nothing to do with language used but what the website is actually doing. So for example, if you have a, say, 5-page website viz: home, about, services, contact and products and all that is on these pages is text, with no interaction with, say, a database server, then even if you wrote it in a language yet to be developed, it is a static website. On the other hand, if you have a website that, say, displays a list of products from a database, which means each time you click a product, the site talks to a database to get details about the product, now you are talking a dynamic website. You can use any editor from notepad to netbeans, etc etc to create any website, static or dynamic. Good luck! 2 Likes |

@daddynasa: That is why I said, "At any rate, off the top of my head without giving it much thought and based on how you have structured your tables, I would probably..." I always qualify my statements because I know someone like you will sooner or later come along |
Webmasters / Re: Please Help With This Sql Problem by yawatide(f): 1:08pm On Jul 15, 2014 |
So I am looking at the tables and I don't see a (primary) key in one that would serve as the "hook" for the (secondary) key in the other. Maybe it's there, though column names don't match, but I don't see it. You may want to start by making the correction. At any rate, off the top of my head without giving it much thought and based on how you have structured your tables, I would probably do a SELECT * on all msg where userid = senderid AND userid = recipientid Good luck! |

Webmasters / Re: Please Review This Website by yawatide(f): 2:25pm On Jan 10, 2014 |
@hilary: I've been down this road every now and then for the past 9 years on NL. I didn't fall for it then and I won't fall for it now If you want to know more about me, you will have to do so offline. As far as NL goes, you will have to deal with my "personal opinion" based on my years of experience or go do it your own way. I guess at the end of the day, the end will justify the means. Toodles @Taiw: I would google and visit the top 5 search results for job websites in the US, Europe, Africa and Nigeria and note what color combo they are using. That is how i go about my web design. I can't say for a fact, but I bet you there will be a trend (either similar colors or the use of solid colors). Good luck! |
Webmasters / Re: Help Me To Review My Site by yawatide(f): 1:53pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Since most of what I will assume is your target audience browse the web on mobile devices and as such, have to pay for the air time, I guess it makes sense that your site is mostly text-based. Having said that, I don't think a few images here and there would hurt your site. It would make it more inviting and pleasant to the eye. I also think the light blue doesn't make the site appealing. Maybe something deeper. Good luck! 1 Like |
Webmasters / Re: Please Review This Website by yawatide(f): 1:50pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
Personal opinion: Based on the "redness" of the header area and the looks in general, I don't think many will be encouraged to look for a job on that site. I would look at what other good websites are doing (hotjobs, dice, computerjobs, jobber, etc) and see what from those sites you can inculcate into yours. Good luck! |
Webmasters / Re: We Present To You, The (voluntarily) Redesigned Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(f): 2:04pm On Jan 07, 2014 |
^^^ The site was up for about a year after it launched. The point wasn't to compete with the official site but to show the world that there were individuals who were willing to dedicate their (free) time and resources towards doing something good for the country. The facebook group still exists (Nigeria redesign something something... ). Many of the artifacts may be found there. |

Webmasters / Re: Reviews Needed For This Website by yawatide(f): 2:32pm On Dec 29, 2013 |
1) You can do better, with respect to formatting your paragraphs and unordered lists 2) Add pictures of the lawyers, to make it more personal and inviting 3) Remove the scrolling photos on all pages but the home page - it becomes a distraction after the home page, especially since its the same images 4) Move breadcrumbs to the top. Of what use are they if it is at the bottom? |

Webmasters / Re: What Can One Do With Html by yawatide(f): 10:25am On Dec 26, 2013 |
HTML is used to code regular websites (static, nothing happening, plain old informational stuff). As opposed to a web app, which is where the fun stuff happens. For the latter, you need more than html. You need a back end language like php, jsp and the like. Examples of web apps: Facebook, Nairaland, and Twitter, to name but a few 2 Likes |
