Yesterday afternoon, August 7, 2022, some opposition figures sought to trend a video in which thugs and supporters of former Senate President Bukola Saraki threw caution to the wind and disrupted an event held on 26th December 2018 by the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) at the Emir of Ilorins Palace. This video showed the Saraki crowd, known in those years for intimidating people, heckling the then governorship candidate of APC AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as he gave his remarks at the community event in the presence of the Emir and dignitaries from the Emirate. Attached to the video (they tried to trend now) is a caption that the Governor was booed at Kwara State Polytechnic. It is false. No event took place in Kwara Polytechnic yesterday, August 7, 2022, to warrant the Governor being there. The video was taken in 2018 at the annual event organised by Ilorin Emirate's apex sociocultural body, the IEDPU. The Governor who was a candidate then, attended the event as a special guest of his home community association. It is well known that this riotous and disrespectful action by Saraki supporters and thugs was the last straw that caused the Saraki's loss of every single elective seat in Kwara at the 2019 General Elections. Those who trended the video desperately meant to send the signal that an incumbent Governor was being booed. That probably misled the wrong audience. For the Kwara audience, however, the video did the opposite. It reminded them of the terrible old days when anyone who held different views was treated with contempt and harassed with thugs loyal to the deposed dynasty. The video reminds them of the dreaded dark days when respected Royalty and elders of the community were humiliated for daring to differ. The video brought back memories of when opposition leaders were denied access to public places. But the fake video came at a wrong moment in history. Over the last three years of the AbdulRazaq Administration, Kwara has enjoyed unprecedented peace and security. Scheduled flights to the city of Ilorin have quadrupled. Less than a month ago, this conducive environment allowed all Ilorin sons and daughters and residents of the capital city to enjoy a very peaceful Eid as well as a joyous Durbar at which the Governor and other dignitaries rode on horseback along with the Emir amidst a cheering tumultuous crowd. Such events were never held peacefully in those dark years. It was a video that retold the story of the horrors of those years, in contrast with the convivial atmosphere that the same man they harassed in the old video has now created in Kwara State. It is a rude awakening of Kwarans to the ugly past administrations and a time call for them to exercise their imminent civic duty of voting to permanently bury the bad old days and its ruthless rulers. While the Governor represents a bright new dawn of free speech, those behind the video are purveyors of fake news reminiscent of the old order. Certainly, no reasonable Kwaran wishes a return of those years where to hold a contrary view earns you jeers, indignation and violence. Members of the public are kindly urged to ignore the old video clip which is clearly one propaganda gone awry.

Eight suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militant wing of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have been arrested in Umuodeche, a community in Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria’s South-east.
The suspects were arrested on 20 July inside a thick forest popularly known as “Ikeohia-Umuodeche.”
A vigilante group from the community and another vigilante group from a neighbouring community, Umuezeukwu, carried out the arrest when they raided the suspects’ camp in the forest.
Five of the suspects, including a lady, were arrested in their hideout.
Hours later, the vigilante group, with the help of the information from the arrested suspects, also arrested three more suspects.
Members of the community had not entered the forest for many years, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
The suspected IPOB members erected a makeshift tent inside the forest and had spent about two weeks there before they were arrested.
A team of police officers who visited the place reportedly razed the makeshift tent, hours after the vigilante arrested the suspects. Some video clips and pictures, taken before the camp was razed, showed that the suspects had erected two shrines where they usually force their recruits to take oath before beginning their operations.
“This is where I stood and took the oath with this kola nut,” said a recruit, in yellow sportswear, pointing at a piece of kola nut on the ground.
In his confessional statement to the joint-vigilante group, Uchenna Otuocha, one of the arrested gang members, confirmed they were IPOB members.
“We are here as IPOB members, we are 11 in number, three indigenes of this village and eight of us, we got an information that you guys (vigilantes) are coming and this guy (pointing at the one in yellow sportswear) said we should leave here.
“That he will find us another forest inside and cook food for us. As we got that information, we don’t know here, so they led us to the other road while they followed the main road with the tools bag (containing guns and other weapons),” an IPOB member, who was shirtless in the clip, said.
While he was still speaking, the only lady among them, who identified herself as Chinenye Amaka, told the vigilante that some of her colleagues who had the gang’s arms and ammunition followed one of the indigenes to his house to pass the night.
“Those three guys with the bag followed this guy (pointing at another indigene of the place whose name is yet to be ascertained) to their house to pass the night,” she said.
Continuing, Ms Amaka, who claimed she is from Enugu State, said the gang members usually carry out attacks, although she denied ever taking part in the attacks. “We were brought here for armed robbery, we also set police stations ablaze,” she said.
When asked what else they do, she said, “We also kidnap people. We are five – myself, Lampard, Hotwater, Reported and Young.”
She said Reported nickname of one of the suspects is the owner of the arms they used to carry out the attacks.
“Reported brought me from Owerri,” she said.
A suspect, Chinedu David, who had been implicated by other gang members before his arrest, however, denied his involvement in the robberies and other crimes.
“I didn’t commit any crime. I don’t know why they mentioned my name. Let the person that mentioned my name prove it,” he told our reporter.
Tracing of their camp Many of the suspects confessed to the crime of kidnapping and armed robbery, including attacks on police stations, which have been on the increase across Nigeria’s South-east.
A source, who asked not to be named in this report because of the fear of being attacked, told this reporter that the suspects were traced to their camp when some members of the community became suspicious and uncomfortable due to strange faces they kept seeing around the community.
“We started noticing that this girl (Ms Amaka) will always come out from somewhere, buy something from our market and go towards the forest. So, we started monitoring her until we ascertained where she was coming from and then alerted our vigilante group,” the source said.
The arrest A leader of the joint-vigilante group said the arrest of the suspects was in response to a distress call from another vigilante group in a neighbouring community.
“We planned and went into the bush at about 7:30 to 8:00 in the night and apprehended four boys and a girl. So, we brought them back to the community,” he said.
He said the vigilante handed over the suspects to the police.
No rifles The leader of the joint-vigilante lamented that fighting crime in the area had been difficult because of the lack of arms.
“Had it been that those suspects came with guns that day, there was no way we could have faced them because we only went with machetes,” he said, as he displayed his machete. “You don’t expect a vigilante member with a machete to arrest a suspected criminal with rifles.”
He appealed to the government to assist them with some rifles to enable them to fight crimes in their communities.
Meanwhile, some police officers from Abia State visited the community and picked up the arrested suspects.
The police paraded the suspects in the community before taking them away, but the officers denied our reporter access to interview or take photos of the suspects.
The police also denied a State Security Service official access to the suspects.
Three of the suspects who fled the scene were said to have left with their arms. They were yet to be arrested at the time of filing this report.
When contacted on 29 July, nine days after the arrest, the police spokesperson in Abia State, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he was not aware of the incident.

The Delta State Governor and Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said the PDP remains the only party capable of rescuing Nigeria from the dungeon which the All Progressives Congress has plunged it.
Okowa also stated that he was very optimistic that the PDP would not only win the election with an impressive margin, but also garner massive votes from the South-East in general.
He said his party would win Anambra State with wide margin, in spite of the fact that the state already has two presidential candidates in the Labour Party and the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Okowa stated these at the Uche Ekwunife Campaign Office, Awka, on Sunday, after attending a special church service to mark the 60th birthday anniversary of the Anglican Archbishop of Niger Province and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Alexander Ibezim.
According to the governor, key appointments had eluded the South-East region for the past 12 years, a situation he said his party was all out to correct. Okowa insisted that the major reason the PDP was seeking to win the presidential election in 2023 was to rescue the country from the current poor state which the APC had plunged it into.
He said, “The PDP is not unmindful of the fact that Ndigbo have never had their fair share of appointments in the country over the past 12 years and I stand here to promise that Ndigbo will play a major role in our government as from 2023 and beyond. “We are aware that Anambra has two presidential candidates for the 2023 election, but we are going to win, not just a landslide, but an impressive margin. We will also garner massive votes from the South-East in general and Anambra State in particular, inspite of the fact that the state is parading two presidential candidates of Labour Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance.”
Okowa was flanked by a PDP Board of Trustees, BoT member, Chief Ben Obi; the state chairman of the PDP, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu; the senatorial candidate of the PDP for Anambra Central, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), among other top executive members of the PDP in Anambra State.
In their separate remarks, Ben Obi, Nwobu and Ekwunife assured Okowa that Anambra State would vote massively for the PDP to give the party a resounding victory in 2023.
The Abia state government says it will not disband the Ebube Agu security outfit.
Sopuruchi Bekee, Abia commissioner for homeland security, said this on Tuesday amid protests demanding the disbandment of Ebube Agu.
The security outfit was set up in April 2021 by the south-east governors to tackle insecurity in the geo-political zone.
But in recent months, reports of arbitrary killings have been linked to personnel of the security outfit.
In July 2022, Amnesty International had called on the federal government to investigate allegations of extrajudicial killings involving Ebube Agu operatives.
The human rights advocacy group made the demand a few days after some persons, said to be wedding guests, were allegedly killed by Ebube Agu operatives in Otulu in Oru east LGA of Imo state.
In the past few days, protesters have taken to the streets in parts of the south-east, including Imo, seeking the disbandment of the security outfit. According to NAN, on Tuesday in Abia, protesters converged on Ariaria international market, from which they moved through Faulks road, Aba-Owerri road, Brass road to Aba north LGA, chanting anti-Ebube Agu songs.
The protesters also accused Ebube Agu of being a “murderous outfit”.
