Politics / Re: Nigerians Should Not Vote A Leader Above 70 Years - Peter Obi by yibomustgo(m): 4:22am On Jan 01, 2015
[s]
matrixx9:
Ahead of the 2015 presidential election,
Nigerians have been admonished to emulate
progressive countries like the United States
and United Kingdom which have never elected
a president above 70 years of age since the
inception of democracy in their countries.
Speaking in an interview with journalists in
Lagos, a former Governor of Anambra State
and the Deputy Director General (South) of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
reconciliation team, comprising the South-
west, South-east and South-south, Mr. Peter
Obi, said the oldest person ever elected as
the US president was Ronald Reagan at the
age of 68.
He said the All Progressives Congress (APC)
does not wish the country well, or else why
would the party be agitating for the election
of a 73-year-old former Head of State,
General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), adding: “In
a world, where a life-changing protest for
democratic change, the demand for free and
fair democracy without Chinese interference
was led by a 17-year-old boy in Hong Kong,
APC is threatening to inflict a 73-year-old
grandfather on Nigeria as president.”
Obi therefore called for the re-election of
President Goodluck Jonathan, stating that
the president has set the right processes in
motion, adding that Jonathan’s performance
has been under-reported and “even distorted
by mischief makers.”
He said Jonathan could not be held
responsible for the decline in the value of
naira, as Nigerians need the understanding of
macro-economic realities to understand what
is happening in the world today.
According to Obi, “The depreciation in the
exchange rate is a worldwide phenomenon
fuelled by the fall in oil prices and other
elements of the increasing global economic
and security challenges. Hardest hit are
countries that export petroleum products.
“Talking about the fall in the value of the
naira, look at what is happening in Russia
and other places. In just a year, the Russian
rubbles lost 40 per cent of its value. The
Venezuelan currency even lost more than
that. The interesting thing about these
countries is that they are not calling for the
crucifixion of their leaders, rather, they are
supporting them with an understanding that
the gale will pass away.”
“Do you realise that the major search engines
and social networks of the world, like Google
(1998), Yahoo (1994), Ebay (1995),
Facebook (2004) and Alibaba were all
founded by young people under 40 years of
age? Most of the captains of industry in
Nigeria today are led by men and women who
were not yet in primary school 31 years ago
when Buhari’s was head of state.”
Disagreeing with the notion that because
Buhari stopped the Maitatsine insurgency in
the 80s, he could do the same with the Boko
Haram sect, he said what obtained then was
quite different from the current scenario,
adding: “The stable global environment of the
80s cannot be compared with the volatile and
terror-enveloped global environment of today.
The socio-religious realities that threw up the
Maitatsine group are different from the
realities that threw up Boko Haram
insurgency.
Obi commended Buhari, who at 41, which was
31 years ago, staged a coup d’état and
removed the democratically elected
government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari and tried
visibly to instil discipline and order in our
society.
He, however, said that the coup was Buhari’s
greatest achievement, but the “economic
policies and actions of that government were
disastrous, as Nigeria nearly turned into a
pariah nation that no one wanted to deal
with globally. At the time, under the Buhari’s
government, confirmed Letters of Credit were
rejected, because no one wanted to deal with
Nigeria.”
Obi said considering the fact that APC
believes that its presidential candidate is the
best in the annals of Nigeria’s history, does
not indicate that he should be asked to come
back, adding: “The Singaporeans are not
asking Lee Kwuan Yu to come back.
Malaysians are not asking Mahathir
Mohamad to come back. The Americans are
also not asking Bill Clinton, who came to
office 10 years after Buhari’s first outing and
who had the best economic performance in
the 21st century, to come back. Are we
saying that Nigeria has not produced anyone
who can do the job today?”
Taking a swipe at the opposition party that
the Jonathan administration is incapable of
fighting corruption, Obi said: “Everyone in
Nigeria claims to be a saint and accuses
others of being corrupt. We all read and also
heard from those who were there what
transpired at the APC primaries in Lagos.
That is not corruption, right? While I agree
that there is the need to strengthen
institutions like the ICPC and EFCC, to fight
the physical and more tangible forms of
administrative corruption, there is also the
far more fundamental need to fight
corruption from its very roots.”
He called on Nigerians to elect President
Jonathan who he said has what it takes to
take the country to the next level in its
development.

Rubbish from the same suspects from other side of the Niger. How old was Mandela when he became president. How is Prime Minister of India there now? Mugabe, Sirleaf, Bashir, Paul Biya, President of Eq. Guinea, and many more are still there today and in their 70s or 80s doing well for their countries.

xtanburg:
Mr Abdulkadri Abdulsalam, the National Chairman, Labour Party, on Tuesday said that the party had not endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2015 general elections.

Abdulsalam, who gave the clarification in an interview with NAN in Abuja, said the rumour had gone viral on social media.

He said the rumours had no base or truth.

“The party has not endorsed anybody; if we want to endorse anyone as a presidential candidate, we must hold a convention where we will collectively and democratically agree.

“No credible candidate has spoken with us for endorsement; the information going round that we have endorsed Jonathan must be considered as rumour.

“Whatever is our intention to endorse any presidential candidate will be made known because we will definitely meet and endorse who ever we want as a presidential candidate,’’ he said.

However, he said that no credible candidate with the capacity and capability to compete for presidential position had emerged from Labour Party.

On the party’s score card for 2014, he said it had conducted different political education programmes and seminars for women and youths on the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

He recalled that the party’s convention was held successfully on Oct. 11 in Akure, where he emerged as the National Chairman.

According to him, the party has given 40 per cent slots to women in its cabinet and relocated its National Secretariat from the noisy Garki market to a more suitable environment, among others.

Meaning - Labour Party is yet to get paid by PDP its own billions.

Politics / Re: Obasanjo, Buhari Planning Interim Govt —FG by yibomustgo(m): 2:11am On Dec 30, 2014
Sharksblow:
The Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, on Monday, said a plot by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to form an interim government has been uncovered.

The minister said this in Lagos at the launch of a book titled, ‘Watch the Watcher,’ written by an activist, Yinka Odumakin, in reaction to Obasanjo’s controversial book, ‘My Watch’.

Adesiyan said he had already directed the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba; and the Department of State Service to arrest anybody that made inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections.

He said, “Many of those in the APC are disgruntled PDP members who are no longer relevant and because they could not have their way, they have started to heat up the polity. They have said they will form a parallel government if they lose.

“I have already told the IG and the DSS to arrest anybody making such mutinous and inflammatory statements.”

Adesiyan said his suspicion was fuelled by a threat by the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that the APC would form a parallel government if the 2015 general elections were rigged.

He added, “Obasanjo is already planning to install an interim government with Buhari. But we will vote and we will work with whoever wins the election.”

Adesiyan, who was detained in 2003 for the murder of the Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, said the former President was vindictive and was fighting Jonathan because he (Jonathan) had refused to be used by him.

The minister, who was later freed over Ige’s murder, said Obasanjo picked Jonathan as the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s running mate because he felt he could control him but his plans backfired.

The minister said, “He picked a President that was sick and while we were campaigning for the President, he (Yar’Adua) was always in Germany receiving treatment. While many were lobbying for the VP slot, Obasanjo picked a gentleman, Goodluck Jonathan, who had no strong political base so that he could control him.

“Unfortunately for Obasanjo, God had a better plan and Jonathan refused to be used. Obasanjo, being the man that he is, has now teamed up with Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar to snatch power but Tinubu will outsmart him because we Osun people are smart. Ask Tinubu, he is my brother, from my state. He is from Iragbiji while I am from Ode-Omu.”

The Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisations, Dele Alake, said it was silly for anyone to say that Buhari was plotting the emergence of an interim government when Buhari was also participating in the presidential election.

He said, “It must have dawned on Nigerians that the PDP don’t have any answer to the multifarious problems plaguing Nigeria and that is why they have resorted to mudslinging and character assassination.

“If Buhari was planning an interim government, why would he be running for President in the first place? I think sanity has taken leave from them.

“Buhari remains the only viable solution to the quagmire that Nigeria has fallen into and it will take a disciplined person like Buhari to straighten things out.”

When contacted, a source close to Obasanjo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was only the ex-president that could react to the allegation.

The source told our correspondent on the telephone, “It is only Baba that can react to the matter.”

I love the last three paragraphs and I approve of it. Dele Alake should be spokeman for APC. He would be better spokesperson than Lai Muhammed.

Politics / Re: Sule Lamido Accuses Buhari of Divisive Campaigns by yibomustgo(m): 1:24am On Dec 30, 2014
Lamido, who did not want to be seen as an alarmist, said: “Today a vote for either of them could lead Nigeria to an untimely division as well as push others to their early graves.
“We have heard the devilish pronouncements of people like Edwin Clark and Dokubo Asari and Buba Galadima, among others who were predicting a bad end for the country should we Nigerians fail to a vote for either Jonathan or General Buhari and going by what their supporters are preaching, if either of them fails to scale through, it could destabilise Nigeria.”
Lamido, however, hoped that Nigeria will survive the intrigues, adding that it was unfortunate that their supporters are preaching doom for the nation.

He urged the Jigawa electorate, especially members of the PDP to vote for the candidates of their choice and told them not be intimidated or coerced into inappropriate decisions.
Other candidates at the declaration rally were the three senatorial contenders who were handed the party’s flags to gun for their respective seats during the forthcoming elections.
Also speaking, the Vice-Chairman, North-west of the PDP, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Kazaure, who represented the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, said the fact remains always that the PDP is still the party for the people of Nigeria.
He described the huge crowd of PDP supporters in the state as an indication of victory for the party in the state, adding that its governorship candidate was just waiting for the time to be sworn in.
Speaking earlier, Ringim, who spoke on behalf of other candidates, extolled the virtue of Lamido and described him as a role model.
Meanwhile, APC has assured Nigerians and the international community that it will do all in its power to make sure that the 2015 general election is violence-free, saying the rising apprehension about the polls among the populace is inimical to the conduct of a successful election.

In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party however said its efforts should be complemented by the PDP-led federal government, which has a propensity for using the security agencies to harass and intimidate the opposition and ordinary citizens.
It also said the federal government should take all measures necessary to ensure that the elections are free, fair and credible, since rigging and other acts of electoral malfeasance constitute the immediate trigger for anger and violence during and after elections.
“We have heard from Nigerians who are so afraid about possible violence during the forthcoming election that they are even willing to relocate to other countries until after the elections. But as the biggest opposition party in Nigeria and a major stakeholder in our nation’s democracy, we are assuring, on our part, that there will be no violence.
“Though our party has no history of violence, we have commenced a nationwide effort to sensitise our members and supporters on the need to eschew rancour and embrace non-violent methods, even in the face of the kind of provocations to which we were subjected during the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, when our members were needlessly harassed, arrested and detained by partisan security agencies acting under orders from the FG.

“If the federal government allows a level playing field for all contestants, if the security agencies stop acting as the armed wing of the ruling PDP, if the electoral umpire will carry out its duties without fear, favour or bias and if citizens are allowed to exercise their franchise unmolested, the stage will be set for a non-violent, free, fair and credible polls.
“In other words, the government has a major role to play in making the forthcoming polls peaceful. On our part, in addition to other efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful election, we pledge to accept the result of an election that is not only free, fair, credible and transparent, but one that is also seen to be so. We hope other parties will make a similar pledge,” APC said.
The party said it demonstrated, during its recent rancour-free and festive national convention in Lagos, that elections should be a celebration of democracy, rather than a moment of fear, violence and threat to lives.
It said far from mere rhetoric, it had taken practical steps, as far back as May 2014, to work with the PDP to ensure violence-free polls in 2015.

“Following up on a meeting of representatives of both parties in Washington, DC, US, April 7-8 2014 under the auspices of the CSIS Nigeria Election Forum, at which it was agreed that a joint meeting of both parties be convened to discuss and agree on the crucial issue of a code of conduct for the campaigns and the elections, we wrote a letter to the PDP suggesting a bipartisan meeting to address the issue.
“The PDP agreed to the proposal and suggested that it should be expanded to include the leadership of other political parties in the country. However, problem with logistics meant that the meeting did not hold.
“Even with the little time left for the election to hold, we strongly believe that a meeting of the leadership of the two political parties, the APC and the PDP, will send a powerful message to our compatriots and indeed the international community and douse the tension that is building up ahead of the election,” APC said.

Governor Sule Lamido

• Says ex-head of state, Jonathan are Nigeria’s albatross

•APC promises violence-free polls

Abdullahi Rabiu in Dutse and Onyebuchi Ezigbo

Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has accused the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, of divisive campaigns in the northern and southern parts of the country.
Stating this yesterday at the Malam Aminu Kano Triangle during the official declaration of the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and a former chief of staff, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim, alongside his running mate, Dr Nurudeen Mohammad, Lamido noted that a critical look at the situation on the ground exposes people like Buhari as being insincere in both intent and purpose.

Elaborating, Lamido alleged that when Buhari talks to the electorate in the North, he usually plays up the religious card, but once he is in the South, he plays it down by harping on the unity of Nigeria.
Lamido wondered why Buhari had gone out of his way to select a Christian as his running mate and what this portends, adding: “Why then are our people vilified and maligned because they refuse to vote for a Muslim as their president and have opted for a Christian?
“If not, why is it that he chose a Christian as his running mate and shunned the Muslim community, then he turns round to tell the people in the North that his contest is anchored on promoting and guiding their ideological faith.”
The governor was of the opinion that “so long as we want Nigeria to get out of her present predicament, we must be sincere in the way we practise democracy so as to avoid a bloodbath and the rampant killing of Nigerians because of the interest of a few individuals."
Not stopping at blaming solely the former military head of state, Lamido said the main problem of Nigeria today politically speaking is the duo of President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP and his main rival, Buhari, who will be squaring up against each other in the 2015 presidential election.

Lamido said except they are ready to clearly distinguish between their interests and the corporate existence of Nigeria as an indivisible entity, the country would be heading for doom.
He said Nigeria is at a crossroads and blamed the two personalities for the impending danger ahead of the nation.
He warned that after the declaration of the winner of the 2015 presidential election, there could be mayhem if the provocative statements of the supporters of both candidates are anything to go by.
According to him, “Buhari and Jonathan are the albatross of the nation due to their desperation to lead Nigeria at all cost."

Why the lies Mr. Lamido the thiefing Jigawa governor? I have never seen anywhere where Buhari did what you accused of him of doing. By the may Mr. Lamido, what about the corruption cases against your two sons running into over 9 billion Naira with fake contract money paid into 19 bank accounts? I Know you are doing everything possible to make you look like a good cop in front tof GEJ, an Ijaw man for that matter you thought was stupid and was going to bow down for you to become president. it is now glaring you are fighting for the quash of corruption cases against you and your thiefing sons.

Ole, barowo banza!
