Femi down a pawn. slowly being crushed His dark square bishop pretty bad and passive, his best result will be a draw here. if all pawns are exchanged on the queenside and the kingside, blacks advantage will be the b pawn which has a light queening square. Should he aim to get black to relinquish the light square bishop and lead to that sort of an endgam?

Femi plays bishop defending his weak pawn but exposing another weakness.

Femi in trouble, Carlsen targeting his weak pawn, or force white to exchange his light bishop?...white have a really bad position after this... He tempted femi to play Bg8 ,

Queens off the board, game tending towards a draw

Carlsen retreats his knight |

is Femi planning Bxb5 to force trades and leave a bishop and knight drawish endgame??

That e5 square must remain guarded, so Femi should not be tempted to push his d pawn, he can reroute his bishop to a more active square via f1 despite black's lone d pawn looking a lil weak, it cannot be easily reached. so it really isnt much of a weakness,

Femi is slowly trying to uncramp the position

Whites problems are beginning to compound....being constricted like a boa, his game is very very passive, which is not good for a player using white

Magnus plays f4 and after the bishop retreat he play g5, the slow crush has begun
|
![]() |
black is beginning to win space and f4 is a threat
|

the recent f3 move by femi chasing white's bishop could be a problem for him as he has shut his bishop off temporarily

Femi declined a bishop exchange.. Well for Carlsen to offer it means its good for him 1 Like

Femi has routed his knight, forcing black to do something about the c5 pawn

Carlsen playing quietly as usual

Carlsen plays e5, Femi replies with a3, is he planning a b4 break. Wondering what his plan for his dark square bishop is
|
![]() |
Femi solves the problem of the b2 pawn by pushing c3, now he can castle, carlsen can continue his development with Nf6 preparing to castle while white can castle and push for e4 with good stake at the center

Status, white's pawn on b2 hinders his bishop from developing

As expected Femi begins with Nf3 - The Reti's opening , this opening leads to the kings indian via a bishop fianchetto on the kingside. This move is attributed to Richard Reti who was a proponent of hypermodern chess which suggests that the battle for the center should not be fought directly with pawns but from the flanks via bishops and knights. Another popular proponent of hypermodern chess was Aaron Nimzowitch who was widely regarded as the father of hypermodern chess

Game to start in a couple of moves. From the little history we can find on Balogun's games. he seems to favour the kings indian as white. As usual expect Carlsen to avoid early crisis in the opening and play quietly in the beginning. His focus are more on the middle game where his strategic and positional prowess will come to light. Lets see how Femi performs!! |

Day 2 is upon us for Game 2 of the ongoing FIDE world chess championships For the benefit of those who didnt follow yesterday, Oluwafemi Balogun of Nigeria played World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway. He resigned after 37 moves as black following some slow crushing play by Magnus. Femi plays as white today in game 2 and we hope he has some novelties up his sleeves. Best of luck to him 2 Likes |

alex81: We knew carlsen 10 yrs ago lol... The point is that nowadays if you're not yet a GM by at least 22, just forget it lol... He's 30 and not an IM yet, there are 15 year old GMs.. Anish giri, caruana, wesley so, wei yi, those guys are young... Anand is getting old but has been a consistent challenger for very long time... Its not like those days where you can learn chess at an old age and still thrive (blackburne learnt chess at 18 i think but was still referred to as a coffee house player cos of his inconsistencies)... Nowadays if you are 20 and not yet a GM... Hmm.. 1 Like |
