Saintp:

Is it compulsory that every programmer must start with web development technologies? I mean HTML, CSS, Javascript. what if the person interest is in desktop, mobile applications etc, can't he go into things like Java,,, C# etc without the HTML stuff? please clarify

Sure he can, but like I said, it's slightly easier plus you can start building real usable stuff faster than desktop or mobile applications.

Like I said, its just a suggestion.

For job seekers, ensure you read st least 2 hrs daily. It helps you build confidence. Knowledge brings confidence.

Its been something I've been doing for a long time now and its really good. It could be articles online, books, academic materials, journals, anything.

Task yourself to have some new knowledge that you didn't have the previous day.

Join Quora and subscribe to various topics you're interested in. You'll learn a lot.

Learn to play a musical instrument if you can.

The key here is self development. Time has a way of rewarding these things. I can guarantee that.

I remember when i created a thread a couple years ago for unemployed grads.

Just remember that when its your turn, lend out a helping hand.

From time to time, I'd be dropping links, books etc here for us to enrich our knowledge.

God bless you all.

We shall never forget the days of humble beginnings

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom by yorex2011: 9:14pm On Feb 22, 2018
Good evening everyone.

So I've had the chance of interviewing a couple of young grads for some job positions. Though they are strictly programming/developer positions, i feel there are things we can all learn.

Never overestimate yourself, I've interviewed guys who claimed to have high knowledge in certain topics yet can't answer simple questions.

ASSUMPTION: they think that is what the interviewer wants to hear, or what would impress them.

REALITY: you'd shoot yourself in the foot because most of the time you will invite questions that you cannot give answers to

TIP: potray yourself as a learner who is keen on becoming better, defend your talk by mentioning recently learnt stuff that are in line with the job position. Also demonstrate you understanding of the little you know

RESULT: the interviewer will see potential and appreciate the fact that you realize you know nothing but are open to learning and becoming an asset later.
Remember you are a grad, so the interviewer doesn't expect experience or thorough knowledge, what he expects is potential.

This I applied when interviewing for my first job.

Second point, tell me about yourself.
ASSUMPTIONS : the interviewer wants to me to read my CV to him again

REALITY: the interviewer is giving you a chance to break the ice and feel comfortable.

TIP: Don't mention anything thats in your CV maybe except you course of study and your nickname (and why that nickname if its something reasonable). Mention some productive things you're doing with your spare time, a good approach can be the past, present and future. I've done this, while doing this i realised i needed to learn this so I'm currently learning or reading about this, this is were i see myself in so so and so.

Make it enjoyable for the interviewer. Don't cram responses , just let ot flow.

RESULT: ice broken, rest of interview should be more comfortable for you. You gain confidence.

Some Miscellaneous tips.
Dress well.. A tucked in shirt, tie or suit optional for guys. Girls no flashy colors or revealing stuff.

Smell good but not to the choking extent.

speak simple English and don't try to use big words you don't understand.

When its time for salary talk, ask yourself what you would pay yourself if you could hire yourself. Then you'd realise what you're worth

If your have discipline issues, try Alat by Wema.

You specify what your target is and you won't be able to spend until you reach that target.

Its a revolutionary solution. Registered on my mobile phone, got an atm card 2 days later. You can then upload some more documents to upgrade the account and start saving.

You can even set up recurring transfers, eg transfers to parents automatically at month end etc.

I don't work with them, so I can't answer any questions. I'm just sharing my thoughts

Hello sasquareT,

As a newbie Video tutorials aren't a had Idea, I have a ton of them as well as books. Try to experiment with both to see which suits you.

For a beginner, I'd suggest you learn Web Development first as its not as difficult to get into as others and you can start getting paid jobs in no time (if you are creative and work hard).

Programming is mostly problem solving and algorithm.

You need to start thinking like a problem solver. Synthax is pretty much useless without problem solving skills.

So with all that said, I'd suggest you start with the following.

Html
Css
Javascript

This is your starter pack for web development and pretty much your foundations.

If i have time, I can create a thread for you separately so that I can guide you on how to learn and learn well.

I'd suggest 10hrs html(with bootstrap) , 10hrs CSS, 20 hrs Javascript

After these first 40hrs, we will then decide which backend stack you will like to learn. As well as a database technology

The popular ones are Php, Ruby, Node and Python.

I'm a Php person so I'd naturally tell you to learn php lol.

But by the time you get to this point, you should be comfortable knowing how to learn a new language.

I'd suggest 100hrs on whichever stack you chose as there are a lot of things to be learnt.

During your 100hrs of backend we will also mix in about 10 hours of MySql

When we are done, you'd then learn a framework to help make your development faster,

For Php I'd suggest laravel and for python I'd suggest django.

There is meteorjs, sailsjs etc for node too and rails for ruby

I'd suggest at least 75 hours here too as you will be introduced to a lot of new concepts.

At this point, you should be Comfortable enough to build your own web sites and web applications.

Its now time to start applying for jobs or mini contracts.

When you are comfortable making web applications, we can then revisit your frontend (Javascript) and learn a framework for it (either React, Angular or Vue) as they are the most popular. Learning these will give your skillset a great boost and you'd be able to apply for more jobs or build more sophisticated applications.

React is especially good because of their React Native Platform which can help you build stunning mobile applications.

While doing everything above, it is imperative you read articles, look at other people's codes, and keep up to date with technologies. These can be especially helpful in job interviews.

At some point you will want to pick Java, Python, C, C++ or C#. The key here is not about knowing how to code in 2000 languages but knowing how to think like a software engineer to solve problems in the best way possible, you should be able to pick up syntax easily.

Whatever you chose to do here is entirely up to you, there are a ton of cool stuff to learn. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing,

I wish you all the best in your journey to Mastery.

REMEMBER, ANYTHING CAN BE EASY, YOU JUST NEED TO FOCUS AND MASTER THE ART OF LEARNING.

dimexy247:
Ladies, how long is long enough before you give up the cookie?

The cookie, as we know, is that thing that women have held on to as their power for years.

Sex.
So how long do you usually wait before you have sex in a new relationship? I believe strongly in the ninety-day rule.
This means that you take those three months to find out just what kind of man you are with, and what he is willing to give up to be in the relationship. Your time is precious, and so is your trust and commitment. Any man who is not willing to wait for those three months is not worth all you have to offer.

Instead of sex, take the time to go on dates, explore each other’s hobbies, talk about the future, and even meet each other’s friends and family. Nothing speaks of a man who is truly serious about you than his willingness to meet your bossy sister and overbearing brother.

And if he has stuck it out for ninety days, you have to make sure he’s not just there waiting for the sex. Instead, let it be a time for you two to grow.

By the time those days roll around; you’ll have a deeper and more meaningful relationship that is not built on sexual interest.

Since you suggested jquery then React, I'd go that way. I've learnt many of the topics in your previous post and with the knowledge of java basics (up to classes and objects), picking up js isn't very hard

No be this same var ni that want to be giving me problem grin?

Is it react you use to build android apps please?

Nice work and UI by the way

I'm sorry for many questions!

You can use react to build native android and ios apps via their react Native library.

The reason i mentioned jquery is cos you won't need to use react for all apps.. So jquery will be useful there. But when your using react, there's no need to add jquery to it.

Olalekank:

Thank you very much bro.

Please how long would it take me to move from beginner to intermediate?

I'm not an expert myself so i can't give you a definite figure, but if you're already comfortable with programming in another language, you can start building reasonable stuff in a month or less.

Just try to study too... Read articles not just books... Read about design patterns, look at some github repos.

Though I knew some Javascript, took me less than 2 weeks to get comfortable in react, within the next two weeks i started a react Native app which i helped me learn some more advanced concepts like Higher order functions, pure functions etc.

I recently even wrote my first pure Java android app despite only having theoretical knowledge of Java.

Try to task yourself too... Helps you learn, start simple but not too simple.

With knowledge of strings, arrays, functions, objects and DOM, you can implement a basic ludo game as a way of flexing your muscles.

Javascript is interesting but can also be annoying. Browser console and console.log should be your friend at all times grin

When you're done with the basics, send me a message let's do some real life stuff

Below are the two apps i did,
One was with React Native... Purely Javascript

The other was with purely Java,

And they are almost indistinguishable in terms of performance and feel.

One of the apps helps you generate invoices and mail to your clients.

The other converts your phone to a gateway and posts received sms containing a predefined key to a url eg sms "vote bl bla bla" to a number and the app intercepts any message that starts with vote and sends a post request to a url with the sms as the payload.

They are both simple apps but some good concepts where learnt along the way

I have been battling with web for a while now.
Tried taking JavaScript last year and spent a few hours on it (and I don't think I went back to it until yesterday).

Now I became determined that I needed to take JavaScript yesterday (cos I need to know something to get a job) and resumed JavaScript just around yesterday/today. It's not much of a problem because I have basic knowledge of java and so the syntax is not that hard to use.

I'd resume back to learning this evening when I'm done with classes.

Please I'd like to ask
1. What textbooks can I use to learn effectively?
2. What is the learning curve of JavaScript and how long would it take me to move from beginner to intermediate?
3. What frameworks or libraries would you advise me to learn and at what point do I start picking them up?

Thank you for answers

pcguru1, yorex2011, directonpc

You can get Eloquent Javascript. Its a free book I think and is very good.

You start basically the way you start learning a new programming language.

The only thing is that you don't need a special compiler as your browser would do.

Start learning variable,

Math operations,

String methods

Array methods

Functions

Objects

Scope - very important

DOM

JQuery

React or Vue

Generally, when you understand "how to learn", then learning anything is easy

I'd suggest you make use of your phone if you have an android device.

Its faster and easier to debug.

Those emulators require a lot of system resources.
