Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution proposing further sanctions on Syria, prompting an angry Western response. The UK, US and France said the UN had failed the people of Syria. The mood inside the security council chamber was acrimonious after China and Russia vetoed the resolution. Britain's ambassador accused the two nations of protecting a brutal regime by their actions. America's ambassador said the security council had failed utterly in the most important task on its agenda. China's ambassador denounced what he called an uneven resolution which placed pressure on one side, while Russia's representative claimed the resolution would have opened the path to military involvement in Syria's affairs. Now negotiations are underway to try to extend the mandate of the UN monitoring mission in Syria which is due to expire on Friday. The mission is supposed to monitor a ceasefire and support a political process - neither of which exist. So the UK is proposing a 30 day "final" extension. Syrian forces have deployed tanks, artillery and helicopters in parts of the capital and clashes have been reported south-west and north-east of the city. Meanwhile, the rebels are reported to have captured a number of border posts. Sources told a BBC correspondent on the Turkish-Syrian border that the Free Syrian Army had taken the Sarmada and Bab al- Hawa crossings. However, they were later said to have withdrawn from Bab al-Hawa. On Syria's eastern border, Iraqi officials told AFP news agency that rebels had taken over the Abu Kamal crossing between the two countries. Russia and China have used their vetoes twice before over Syria and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned their latest action as "inexcusable and indefensible". "They have turned their back on the people of Syria in their darkest hour," he said. The UK's ambassador to the UN, Mark Lyall Grant, said he was appalled. Under the Western-backed plan, the Damascus government would have been threatened with non-military sanctions under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter if it failed to move troops and heavy weapons from populated areas. It was the use of Chapter Seven that stirred Moscow's objections. It opened the path to "external military involvement in Syrian domestic affairs", Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin argued. But US ambassador Susan Rice said that any suggestion of military force was "paranoid if not disingenuous". The French envoy accused Russia of seeking to gain time for the Syrian regime while the US said it planned to intensify its work outside the Security Council. With sporadic battles breaking out for control of Damascus, international envoy Kofi Annan has pushed the international community to take urgent and decisive action. The Security Council still has to decide whether to renew the mandate of a UN mission in Syria, due to end on Friday. The UK is said to be revising the text of the vetoed resolution proposing an extension for a "final 30 days". The BBC's Jim Muir in Lebanon says the 300 UN observers have found themselves completely sidelined by the violence in Syria. Whether or not the mission is extended, their commander Gen Robert Mood has decided to leave anyway. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-18914578 And so the bloodshed continues |
Billyonaire: So where can one watch the Chinese League, I have been scanning cctvn and cctvf on KU Band without seeing Soccer played. You will likely not find any football match because entertainment programs in China are limited to two times a week and a maximum of 90 mins in a day. The channels therefore will prioritise, and I dont think football will be number one in the entertainment priority list. The link is below for more info. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-16405804 |
a1solution: It is simply smart guys at work. Such jazz does not exist if he does all the bank and exchange bareu in Naija might have closed down for long. And you think those people you mentioned don't use jazz to protect their money? |
Kobojunkie: I don't care about any persons personal issues with AlJazeera. If anything we have yet to produce anything close to an Aljazeera in all of Africa and so should get over our issues or stick ups. This Post was never about Aljazeera but a discussion featuring Nigerians discussing Nigerian issues, something we are not doing and need to do more of.God bless you |
hassymo5: yes we are ripe, he just want to seat in abuja and direct the whole police sytem from abuja, thats why crises will continue to erupt, Governors dont have power over security challenges of his state, so annoyingIf you clamor for state police, then think again. Think about the TIMARIV of Rivers state, the LASMA of Lagos state, the OPC of the west, the Bakassi boys of the East and the Arewa youths of the North raised to the powers of two. Nigeria is divided against tribal and religious lines, thus the adoption of state police will most likely serve as a tool of intimidation and oppression against other tribes in the states. People should not make the mistake of comparing the USA with Nigeria in this regard. The US is about ten times the land area of Nigeria and such, state police is necessary, not to talk about the inherent tribalism which is found entrenched in the hearts and minds of Nigeria. If that problem of tribalism can be removed in Nigeria (which seems very much unlikely), then we might be ripe for a state police. I think that is what the IG is refering to. |
Image123: I'm not ignoring the corinthian passage, I just feel it's an unneeded complication in understanding the simple issue placed before us. The OP asks, is Jesus Almighty? Jesus Himself replies in Revelation saying "I am Almighty". settle that simple line first before throwing in what ofs and what notsIt will be better u read that passage of Rev 1 v 8 again. Jesus did not say he was the almighty, God Jehovah was the one who said so. Jesus himself said in John 14 v 28 that the father is greater than he is. Whn asked about the time of the end, he said he did not knw but only the father and in 1 Cor 11 v 3, the bible said the head of the christ is GOd. These scriptures among many others simply shows that Jesus and God are not equal or one. |

shymmex: they're trigger happy fools who just leave everything worse than they actually met it... We can use Somalia, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya etc. as case studies...Fool, why don't you include Japan, South Korea, Germany, England, Jibouti, Australia and other western European countries in your post. Or did you not know American soldiers are there? |
Most Africans just turn a blind eye to d bad practices of the Chinese just because of their dislike for the West. But the simple truth is, the Chinese are far worse than the west. Consider their human right record, consider their labour practise, their thriving in counterfeiting of goods and consider the limited freedom that they give to their citizens among other negativities, then you will know that the West is far more humane than the Chinese. You only need to read about Tianemen square massacre in 1989. |
Only one nation has called for a military strike against Iran and that, we learned from Wikileaks, is Saudi Arabia. Still, the main focus of media attention has been on the prospect that Israel will attack Iran because it is the one country the Iranians have threatened with destruction and Israel's leaders have declared a nuclear Iran an existential threat. Many analysts argue that Israel lacks the military capability to stop the Iranian nuclear program for more than a few years and assert that the cost of any attack will exceed the benefit. This is the conventional wisdom, but it is just that, conventional, and Israel has repeatedly proved that it has the daring and creativity to disprove the skeptics. Consider Israel's history. American officials have been consistently wrong about Israel's capabilities. They did not expect Israel to survive the Arab invasion of 1948. In the early 1950s, the Arabs were seen as strategic allies, but, by the end of the decade, Israel was acknowledged as the only pro-Western power in the region. In 1967, no one anticipated that Israel would surprise their neighbors and destroy their air forces on the ground. In 1976, Israel shocked the world when it rescued 102 hostages in Entebbe. In 1981, Israel flew through Arab air space and destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor. In 2007, an Israeli raid destroyed a suspected Syrian nuclear facility. Now Israel's capabilities are again being doubted. Only a handful of Israelis are privy to plans that could be far more audacious and innovative than critics imagine. As Eitan Ben-Eliyahu, who flew a fighter escort on the raid on Iraq told the Jerusalem Report, "you can introduce dozens of improvisations and creative ideas and get much more out of the basic conditions than would seem possible at face value." Assuming Israel can launch an effective strike, what about the argument that it will only set Iran back a few years?Maybe the strike will succeed in destroying more of the program than the naysayers believe. But let's say that it doesn't. This does not mean that Iran will be able to rebuild their program quickly, if at all. Sure, they will still have the knowledge, but it took them about 20years to get to where they are today. They will also face much greater international scrutiny. The world kept its head in the sand for years, and the International Atomic Energy Agency acted like the three blind mice. That will not happen in the future. Furthermore, sanctions can remain in place, inspections could become more rigorous and other measures taken to ensure the nuclear program is not rebuilt. Some argue the Iranians will become more united as a result of their nation being attacked. They may also become more determined to get a bomb to ensure that no one can attack them in the future. This is indeed one scenario, but others are also conceivable. Given the dramatic changes in the Middle East in the last year, isn't it possible that an upheaval will occur in Iran as well and that new leaders will abandon the nuclear option? The people may conclude that their fanatical leaders brought a catastrophe upon them and that it is time to revolt and to restore Iran to the community of nations. Senior leaders may die in the attack, which might facilitate regime change. Opponents of a military option say the consequences would be catastrophic. Iran could launch a military attack at Israel, target Americans or block the Persian Gulf. Iranian allies in Gaza and Lebanon might launch thousands of missiles into Israel. Terrorists may seek revenge on Jews and Americans around the world. These are all possibilities that must be weighed before acting. Other scenarios are also possible. Israel attacked both Iraqi and Syrian facilities and neither country counterattacked Israel. The Iranians know that if they strike back, Israel can respond in devastating fashion. Israel would overwhelm Lebanon and Gaza if Hezbollah and Hamas entered the fray. An Iranian attack on American targets or interference with oil supplies would provoke an overwhelming U.S. response and might bring other Western powers into the fight. Everyone prefers an alternative to a military option, but there is little evidence to date than any other approach will stop Iran from obtaining a bomb. It is wise to consider all the possible consequences of going to war, but it would be a mistake to assume only the worst case scenarios and to underestimate Israel's capabilities. opinion.foxnews.mobi/quickPage.html?page=34606&content=72263059&pageNum=-1 |

Russia says it is prepared to use "destructive force pre-emptively" if the US goes ahead with controversial plans for a missile defence system based in Central Europe. The warning came after the Russian defence minister said talks on missile defence were nearing a dead end. Moscow fears that missile interceptors would be a threat to Russia's security. But the US and Nato say they are intended to protect against attacks from Iran or North Korea. "A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens," chief of the Russian defence staff Gen Nikolai Makarov said. Two days of talks opened on Thursday in Moscow between Russia, the US and Nato. Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said the talks were "close to a dead end", but Nato said it remained hopeful of reaching a deal. Nato Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow told the BBC that Russia's fears of a European missile defence shield were "based on some flawed assumptions" and did not weaken Russia's nuclear deterrent. Gen Makarov also said that if the European shield was built, Russia would respond by putting more powerful warheads on its own ballistic missiles. Russia and the US have been at odds over the issue of missile defence since 2000, ever since the idea was first put forward by then-President George W Bush. President Barack Obama, who succeeded Mr Bush in the White House in 2008, scrapped plans for a network of bases spread across Poland and the Czech Republic with the capacity to intercept long-range missiles. But in 2010, the US signed an agreement with Poland to use an old airstrip at Redzikowo, near the Baltic coast, as a missile defence base. For its part, Russia has put into commission a radar system in its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad which is capable of monitoring missile launches from Europe and the North Atlantic. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17937795 |

bittyend: How do these people always have intelligence of things like this - if they are not the ones behind Boko Haram?? Boko Haram isn't a sophisticated terrorist group, and they're face, yet US always know about their attacks before hand.. Something is fishy here..Have you ever heard the words; espionage, spies and counterintelligence? If you have, then you will know how they get their information. |
alj harem: Because in the international stage their is corruption !!!Your comments only goes to show how unprincipled you are. If you can be so sentimental and biased on the international stage, then what stops u from doing the same in d national level when someone from your tribe is vying for a position - political or otherwise? |
Ayatullah: The late Great and Respectable AYATULLAH KHOMEINI has said it all that America is the GREAT SATAN. This is a proof of his wise saying no doubt!Go blow bomb, if na so e pain u reach. Nonsense Bokoharamist. |
alj harem: Probably but I would not support a foreigner against a Nigerian not matter how corrupt or good the Nigerian is.How do you expect Nigeria or Africa to progress with this type of sentiments. There is really no hope for Nigeria. |
violent: If anyone thinks that in the run up to American elections, Obama will show weakness by allowing his nominee to lose in a position that is almost always exclusively reserved for Americans, then that person has no idea what world politics is all about.you just hit the nail on the head. Tell them. |
warrior101: No link i heard it from Press TV News about 3-4 years ago... Used to be a fan of press tv cuz they are a little bit anti west media...So how do u expect to get an unbiased, unpolished report from a news media which is clearly not objective? |

Danka7777: We know this type of gimmick. This is a precursor to the invasion of Nigeria. The pretext would be: to protect American Citizens on ground! Nigerians shine your eyes, these people don't give a damn about black people. Anything they do is for media gains and their own selfish global interests. If they really do care about Nigerians and blacks as they claim to, they say charity begins at home right, let them start from the blacks in America who have lived under absolute subjugation in America for the past almost 400 yrs, since 1620.You mean black people like Obama, Condoleeza Rice, Lil Wayne and other countless millions in the US. |
pd piper pippen: That idiot knuckle headed good for nothing heaven forsaken idiot who takes delight in attackin pastors, be careful before u face God's wrath, or better stil do us a favour go lie under moving trailer.Have u not been reading the scriptures? Abraham questioned God when He wanted to destroy Sodom and Gommorrah. God had to justify the Destruction to Abraham, that even Abraham said it was 'unthinkable' of God to destroy the righteous with the unrighteous. That is a mere man talking to God, and you say pastors should not be criticized, mere humans like us? No wonder they call you sheeps. |
Meeeen, come my area, make u come see people dey spread pant for high tension wire. |
those of u who are blaming the poster dont know what you are talking about. How many Hausas leaving in the east will claim to be Hausas after the Madalla bombing or how many christains if possible will not claim to be muslims during the Kano riots some years ago. And you blame the young man who is far away from his homeland struggling to survive to admit been a Nigerian after a Brit and an Italian has been killed in his home country. The survival instinct kicked in and he should not be blamed for that. |
I pity those who out of ignorance would prefer the Chinese to the US or the west in general. U only need to go back to history to see how the chinese have been so oppressive, even to their own people. As educated individuals, google Tianamen square and read how on June 4, 1989, the chinese military used live fire to kill thousands of student who were protesting, even using the tanks to crush them. Or of recent, have you nt been hearing of the oppressions and suppression in Tibet, that Tibetian monks now regularly set themselves on fire in protest? Ask yourselves how Chinese companies in Nigeria treat Nigerian workers, as if they are slaves. Wht about internet censorship and the censorship of their entertainment industry? And some ignorant people will compare the Chinese to the US. You better wake up and do not be fooled by their devilish hospitality. |
That she sued for $900 trillion only helps to confirm her insanity. She just helped to kill her case. |
To imagine someone who calls himself a leader will not support the actions of NATO in Libya is unimaginable. Nato took decisive steps(one that cannot be taken by the so-called African leaders) to bring down the oppressive regime of Ghaddafi. African leaders will have prefered the world stays back and watch as civilians are slaughtered like Assad is doing in Syria. Its obvious that Mugabe is only afraid that he might b next, but he shouldnt worry, they have no interest in him. SA that is the most developed in Africa, is so, because in of the presence and acceptance of the whites who live there. If you pursue the west, who will replace them? The Chinese, who most African leaders are already in bed with? The Chinese can not even be taking as models of freedom and civility. We should stop blaming our woes on the west, as these woes were and are caused by the greed, wickedness and self-centeredness of our leaders and Africans as a whole. Only ignorant people will listen to the rantings of Mugabe. |
