13. Learn to say, “No.”
Don’t feel guilty about saying no once in a while. Don’t worry about missed opportunities either. You don’t need to agree to everything that someone asks from you, especially if it is a superior or a client. Sometimes, you are more respected by saying no, rather than agreeing to do a thing. When you say no, you show you’re not afraid of admitting that you value your time, and that you don’t have time for everything.

14. Don’t believe the self-talk.
If you want others to respect you, of course it’s obvious that you need to respect yourself. It’s not always easy, as we all have our bad days. On those days, you will experience negative self-talk. Don’t believe it. Remember your strengths and learn from your mistakes. Confidence comes from knowing that failure and imperfection are the paths to greatness.

15. Believe in your ideas.
Don’t discard your ideas, even if they seem funny, weird, or unorthodox. Embrace your creativity and follow through with your ideas. If you follow through you will achieve something great—and others will wonder how you came up with such a unique idea. The thing is, most people have these unique ideas, but most people are afraid to follow up and implement them, because they seem too far-fetched.

16. Speak up when you’re mistreated.
Don’t just take it when someone is mistreating you, or taking advantage of you. Be professional and diplomatic, but don’t be silent. Speaking up for yourself is not always easy to do, which is why it is the mark of a person deserving respect.

17. Stand up for someone else.
When you see injustice around you, do you ignore it in order to avoid confrontation? Sometimes you have no choice, but there are moments when you need to stand up for others, especially when they cannot stand up for themselves. You don’t need to please everyone. Don’t be afraid of confrontation once in a while, as long as you do it in a diplomatic way.

18. Speak your mind.
When it is necessary, make sure you speak your mind. People who are highly respected have strong opinions on many topics, and lots of ideas about how to improve things. Don’t be afraid to mention these ideas once in a while, especially during a meeting, brainstorming session, or casual gathering.

19. Stop talking.
Sometimes you need to stop talking and listen. People who talk endlessly without pause are not usually respected (with very few exceptions). Listen to others. Stop talking about yourself all the time. Genuinely listen to people—really listen and try to understand them. Use silence to your advantage. Not every pause should be filled up with noise. Taking a moment to consider a thing before you open your mouth is almost always going to command respect.

20. Care about others.
Start caring about others. Pay attention to your surroundings and the people in your life, whether it is at work, home or church. Genuinely caring about others and showing concern during times of need shows empathy—a powerful trait of good leadership. It also shows that you don’t only focus on yourself, and that you have the emotional capability to pay attention and give help when needed. Not everyone can do this, which is why it is so powerful.

21. Control your emotions.
Make sure to curb your instant reactions to things that make you highly emotional—whether it is good or bad. Sure, it’s OK to be yourself and show enthusiasm. But remember that good leaders and well-respected people know the difference between responding and reacting. The latter is not a good habit.

Be confident. Believe in yourself that you can gain respect from others

Nairaland / General / 21 Ways You Can Earn The Respect Of Others by youngPRO(m): 6:59pm On Apr 06, 2015
1. Be relentlessly proactive:
Don’t always wait for direction from others. Use your own skills and resources to start getting things done and solve problems. Get in the habit of figuring things out for yourself. Don’t be afraid of a challenge once in a while.

2. Keep your promises:
This is by far one of the most important actions you can take to start gaining respect. If you took commitments lightly in the past, don’t do that anymore. Always honor commitments and promises. If you find yourself having a lot of trouble with that, it means you make too many promises you can’t keep.

3. Stop apologizing:
People who are constantly saying, “I’m sorry,” without giving it a second thought are usually not the ones that are well respected. There is a time and place for apologies. Sometimes you make mistakes that affect family and friends. You can apologize to them. Meanwhile, stop using the word “sorry” a hundred times an hour for every little thing that goes wrong, especially in the workplace.

4. Don’t waste other people’s time:
If you respect others’ time, they will respect yours. This includes not being late for appointments, not spending meetings talking about useless items, getting to the point fast, bringing up issues right away, being succinct, and of course, making it easier for others to make decisions, especially when they are busier than you.

5. Stop gossiping immediately:
Always act as if the person you’re talking about is right there with you. You need to respect others—even if you don’t like them. Everyone has desirable and undesirable traits. Realize this and talk from this fundamental belief. If you talk behind people’s backs, you and your reputation will quickly become irrelevant.

6. Stop being too nice:
Distinguish kindness from always having to do things for people. Trying to make everyone happy won’t get you very far. Being a pushover is highly undesirable if your goal is to be respected. If you’re too nice to everyone all the time, some people might even think you’re not genuine.

7. Practice humility:
You’re not always going to be right, and you’re not the best at everything. Every person you meet can teach you something. Confidence doesn’t come from a place where you’re the best. True confidence comes from understanding humility, and that every person has something unique to offer to the world, including you.

8. Have a moral code:
Many overlook this important little piece of advice. What do you believe in? What’s important to you? What makes you mad and want to change the world? These kinds of questions will get you to the core of your own personal moral code. Figure it out and share it with the world in small amounts. All the great leaders of the world had a clear moral code.

9. Be open-minded:
At the other extreme of having a moral code is to remain open-minded. Being open-minded is not complicated, nor is it in conflict with having a moral code. It simply means that you acknowledge that you still have so much to learn, and you continue learning from others, even if you have a strong core belief system.

10. Add real value:
Whether you’re part of a community, a company, a group of friends or a team, you will be respected if you always think of ways to offer value to others. Value can come in many forms, but in the end it’s all about offering something to the world or to your community that can help by solving a problem for them. If you create something of value, people will respect you.

11. Always do your homework:
This means do the due diligence. When you’re interviewing someone, do the background research and find out everything you need to know to make an effective interview. When you’re going to a job interview, make sure you’ve done your homework about the company and know what their needs are. When you’re talking to friends, listen and retain information from the conversations and remember things that they care about for next time.

12. Be inspiring:
You can be inspiring by talking to others about your passions and goals without holding back. You can be inspiring by endlessly encouraging others to follow their dreams, goals, and visions, and showing that you have faith in them.

A man came back from work and met his wife
making love to another man on their
matrimonial bed, without shouting or beating any of them he went to the sitting room, switched on the television and sat quietly listening to news.

A few minutes later, the man got dressed,
came to the sitting room and said to the husband 'am sorry',
but before he could say any more words, the
husband said 'don't
worry, stuff like this happen', and the man
left, but the wife did not come out of the room.

Tired of watching the television, the husband
switched off the TV, went into the room, met the wife crying, without saying a word
to her or asking about the incident, he went
straight to bed and slept.

By morning, the husband woke up and saw the lifeless body of the wife. She committed suicide
while he was sleeping.

The husband was
arrested and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for murder.

QUESTION: Who is unfair in this?
1. The Law;
2. The Wife;
3. The Husband; or
4. The Man.

EPISODE 23 - EVI EVICTED; SAMANTHA IS LAST FEMALE CONTESTANT STANDING

The Council of Elders sent word to Chinedu, the tribe leader, to go to Desire’s Ditch, with his most trusted ally. Chinedu picked Cosy; and both of them found a scroll and a small sack at Desire’s Ditch.
The scroll read: “The Council of Elders heard your call for beans. Use the beans to determine on your sundial, what time you should go back tonight to search again.”

The sack contained six bean pods and the contestants reasoned that they were to return to the location by 6pm, later that evening. They also speculated that the Council of Elders, having heard their plea for beans, had decided to grant their wishes and provide them with the food staple.

Otto said the contestants were willing to exchange a bucket of garri for beans while Emmanuel said that he planned to have some of the contestants solicit for Sharwarma; since the tactic appeared to have worked.

Just before the day’s task at Snake’s Village, Chidi asked if there was anything new happening in camp. Chinedu told him that the Council of Elders had heard the contestants’ cry for beans and had told them to go to Desire’s Ditch by 6pm to pick up the beans.
Chinedu also requested that they be allowed to display their tribe chant in the presence of Chidi. The Anchor man said he was impressed with their chant.

The day’s task was called Bucket trap. Each of the contestants was to lift buckets off a pulley and hold on to the pulley for as long as their strengths could carry them. They were to remain on a platform and they could not lean left or right or lean on the pulley. The weight of the buckets was 30 per cent of the body weight of each contestant. There were water melons under each of the buckets and the contestant whose bucket touched the water melon first lost.

Chinedu described the challenge as the most difficult since he got to the jungle. He also questioned if the bucket was actually 30 per cent of his weight as he felt it was higher. Cosy wanted to know the morale behind the task, stating that it was an unnecessary burden. Emmanuel said the contestants had to endure pains through the task.

The contestants’ facial expressions betrayed the intense pain which they had to endure as they held on to 30 per cent of their body weights under the scorching sun. As they tried to adjust their hands to reduce the agony, Chidi kept instructing them to adhere to the rules of the task.

Samantha, Otto and Chinedu all said they felt like giving up, but had to muster enough energy to keep them in the gain.

After enduring 30 per cent of her body weight over a period of an hour and 15 minutes, Evi was gradually drained of her energy and she released the pulley as her bucket touched the water melon. She was declared the loser of the game and was evicted from Gulder Ultimate Search 11.

Cosy soon dropped his bucket, followed by Samantha. Chinedu and Emmanuel followed suit, paving the way for Otto to win the game and emerge the new Tribe leader. He was also allowed to keep his water melon.
Samantha did not immediately realise that she was the Last Woman Standing on Gulder Ultimate Search. She received commendations from Chidi and the remaining contestants. Chidi also urged her to aspire for more on the Search and not get carried away with just being the Last Female Contestant Standing.

Evicted Evi said she sustained blisters on her hands during the previous day’s challenge which affected her performance in The Bucket Trap task.

She said: “There’s a whole lot which I’ve learnt on GUS which I’m going to apply in life. I’m very happy I was privileged to have had this experience. I have no regrets and I’m very happy I came. I learnt I can actually adapt to the craziest situations ever. I learnt I can be able to survive and improvise in any situation I find myself.”

Her parting words were: “Will miss y’all.”

Otto said he felt sad and emotional about Evi’s eviction and confessed that he liked her personality.”

Back at camp, Samantha revealed that the ladies planned for an all-female final cast, while Chinedu and Emmanuel joked about her statement.

By 6pm, Cosy and Chinedu left for Desire’s Ditch with the hope of getting beans. The remaining contestants urged them to get baskets. As they walked to Desire’s Ditch, Cosy and Chinedu discussed that the Council of Elders should give them onions and other condiments alongside the beans. They also fantasized about having beans and yam as well as beans and garri for dinner.

On getting to Desire’s Ditch, Cosy said they had to look for the beans and they split themselves. After fruitlessly searching for beans, what they eventually found was a scroll and a map. They decided to open the scroll at their camp.

Otto expressed his disappointment stating that he had already prepared the fire with which to cook the beans.

EPISODE 22 - WHY NOELA? WHY?

If there ever was a wager on Gulder Ultimate Search contestants, Chinedu would place his bet on Noela not getting evicted so soon.

Evi also revealed that the female contestants had a plan of dominating the Gulder Ultimate Search 11 finals. But Noela’s eviction has diminished the number of the female contestants. Her exit has also saddened Samantha, who said she would have traded Otto to have her good friend back on the reality TV show. Evi was seen consoling Samantha.

Emmanuel appeared disappointed; not at the fact that she was evicted, but according to him, Noela did not put up a fight in that particular challenge. He said: “One thing I didn’t like was that she gave up. To have made it this far means we are fighters. She shouldn’t have given up.”
Perhaps Cosy’s words best described the Noela quagmire. He said: “It doesn’t matter the location. If it’s your day, it’s your day. If it’s not your day, it’s not your day.”

Perhaps it was a veiled reference to Episode 13’s Ticking Time challenge in which Noela spurred her team to victory. That particular challenge entailed contestants climbing up a palm tree to retrieve tiles to build up a ladder. The day's challenge was similar, perhaps a bit easier. The contestants were to locate a board and memorise the symbols on that board. They were then to make three trips up a high wall, aided by a rope and retrieve three sets of tiles – one at a time. They were then to replicate the symbols on their work stations.
Chidi also instructed them not to drop their tiles but come to the ground with it.

After the contestants rushed to the board to take a look at the symbols, Noela was the first to rush back to the wall in an attempt to retrieve her tiles. However, her attempts remained attempts as contestant after contestant climbed the ropes and retrieved their tiles. As they climbed up the wall, Noela lost her grip, hitting her head against the wall several times.

As the contestants called Chidi’s attention to the fact that they were done arranging the symbols, Noela knelt helplessly, beside the wall, starring as her fellow warriors trudged on.

Chinedu was the first to get it, followed by Evi. Evi’s climbing skills had evidently improved as she performed the task with ease. The same Evi had a very difficult time climbing the palm tree and even burst into tears during Episode 13’s challenge. At this point, Noela used sand particles to tighten her grip on the rope and managed to retrieve one tile. She also removed her shoes and tried to go up the wall with her bare feet, but it did not work either.
By this time, Chidi gave Samantha the pass mark for correctly fixing her symbol.
Noela then put back her shoes on and she stopped attempting to climb to retrieve the two remaining tiles. When Chidi asked her what was wrong, she replied that her hands were too weak. Chidi encouraged her to go on after she said she had used up all her energy.

Otto and Emmanuel then correctly arranged their symbols leaving Noela standing by the wall, with her two remaining tiles still high up the ropes.

Chidi then asked her if she had finally given up. She said she had adding that her hands were swollen.

After the task, the Anchor man asked her what went wrong but she could not explain. He then told her: “You surprised yourself. You surprised me. I’m sure you surprised the tribe too.” She said she was disappointed as well.
Noela appeared to heave a sigh of relief when Chidi asked the contestants to return to base camp. Then Chidi dropped the bombshell – he declared Noela evicted and asked her to return her bandana.

Speaking on her eviction, Noela said: “The truth is I’ve surprised myself on Gulder Ultimate Search and I’ve also disappointed myself. Sometimes you never know what you can do and what you can’t do. I was obviously a strong competitor, a lot of people will be happy I’m going. Before I came here, I never knew I could make it to the final seven. I’m proud of myself. Ninety per cent of the things I’ve done here, I’ve never done in my life. I’m sure my friends and family are proud of me too. I was among the last three girls. Such is life. You win some, you lose some.”

Before Noela left, she wrote “Sammy will miss you” on the camp grounds.

Earlier on, the warriors agreed to name their tribe COSCANE.

COSCANE was an acronym formed from the initials of the contestants’ names. They designed a tribe flag and took it to the battle ground. Chidi said he liked it because it had the picture of a helmet and the words Tribe and Mission.

After the task, he tasked Chinedu who emerged Tribe leader, to ensure that they erect a signage with the COSCANE insignia on it and put it in front of their camp.

The warriors worked on their sign. The COSCANE TRIBE signage adorned the camp surrounding, while the warrior’s flag hung from a pole.

A quick recap of episode 21

Sharon told Chinedu she feared they may be evicted, when the duo performed poorly in the Market Place challenge. Today, Sharon’s work station was in disarray when the other contestants successfully displayed the General’s Helmet; hence she was evicted.

For the Essential Shape challenge, the contestants were expected to retrieve two packs of tiles, one at a time. After successfully arranging it on their work stations, they would have a recognizable shape; and move on to the next stage which was retrieving the last piece of the puzzle.

Chidi Mokeme also informed the contestants that the packs were colour coded. Hence the colour of the pack any contestant picks would be the colour they would work with.

While the contestants were retrieving their tiles, Sharon mistakenly picked up Otto’s tiles, forcing Otto to pick up hers when he could not find his. When Chidi noticed, the Anchor man asked Otto to return her tiles, while Sharon had to make an extra trip to retrieve it.

Samantha emerged the winner of the task, followed by Cosy, Noela, Evi, Chinedu and then Emmanuel. Otto had difficulty in solving the puzzle and at a point shed tears. He eventually fixed the puzzle, narrowly evading the eviction hammer; thus paving the way for Sharon’s exit. Chidi then asked the contestants to give their camp a befitting name on their return.

Speaking after her departure, Sharon said: “I feel very sad that I’ve been evicted, but I know I will get over it. I really wanted to solve the puzzle. I tried my best but maybe my best wasn’t good enough. The only regret I have is that I left too early. But such is life. You win some, you lose some.

On how the remaining contestants would fare with cooking after her exit, she said: “Cooking of food in camp will be handled by the remaining female contestants in camp.”

Sharon is confident that a female contestant would win Gulder Ultimate Search 11. The fallen hero said: “Strange things have been happening in Gulder Ultimate Search this year. Girls have been topping the tasks. I don't think I can vouch for any guy for now because the ladies have been winning this time around.”

Before Sharon’s exit from the camp, she inscribed: “I love you ladies, Cosy my nigga” on the floor in front of their common area.

Noela and Samantha said they were moved to tears when they got to camp and found Sharon’s words. Noela stated: “I felt bad when Sharon was evicted. I was close to tears because Sharon is my friend. It really touched me when I got to camp and I saw the message I love you ladies.”

Sharon’s former teammate, Samantha also had kind words for the evicted contestant. She remarked: “Sharon was my friend and my team mate. We failed tasks as a team. We also won tasks as a team. She’s the closest person to me. When I saw Sharon’s totem burnt, it really moved me. There’s a place we always stay together. When I saw the place empty, I was really moved, but it also taught me that I have to be strong. Before Sharon left, she said if she should leave before me for any reason, that I should try my best and be strong for the both of us. And when I saw the words I love you ladies, I just had to go to Noela’s tent only for me to find Noela too down as well. We just had to pick up ourselves and remind ourselves that we are still in the game.”

Speaking on his near-eviction ordeal, Otto said he almost gave up. He also blamed his poor performance on the task ground – Nameless. He said: “There’s something about that place called Nameless. The first game we played there as a team, we emerged second to the last. Now, we just finished playing game here and I also emerged second to the last.”

Earlier in the day, the contestants had a difficult time locating the Task Area. Chinedu picked up a clue from The Cube which read: “The poor have it, the rich lack it. If you eat it you will die. When you die, you take it with you. This place’s name is not its name, so this riddle tells you the answer to this riddle.”

They had different interpretations for the riddle. While Sharon said the challenge would be held at Nameless, Cosy disagreed. He argued that Nameless was a name and maintained that the challenge would be held at a venue which had no name. Otto said the answer to the riddle was nothing, meaning they were meant to do nothing about the riddle.

They search for their task ground took them to The Place of the Broken Dream and Tomorrow’s Tomorrow which turned out to be wrong destinations. They then decided to head to Nameless where the task was eventually held.
