To force aspirants to step down for him… ABUJA—FRESH facts have emerged why the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was last Thursday silent at its National Executive Committee, NEC, on planned moves to amend the constitution to pave the way for President Goodluck Jonathan to have automatic ticket towards 2015 election. A motion was to be moved to allow for the President and governors on the ticket of the party serving the first term in office the right of first refusal to the party’s ticket for a second term. The proposal which would have scaled through only to be ratified at the August 31, Special Convention, was jettisoned at the last meeting following advice by members of the Board of Trustees, BoT, and also from meetings held last Wednesday. It was also gathered that members argued that since the convention was designed for the election of members of National Working Committee, NWC, the PDP decided to suspend such volatile issues which included the amendment of the constitution. According to a source, since it was expected that the 62nd NEC meeting would be stormy, raising it will further aggravate the PDP crisis. A source told Vanguard that at meetings before last Thursday NEC, members argued that there was no need amending the constitution for the purpose, adding that it was resolved that 2015 was still far and other teething problems of the party should be resolved at the moment. Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and President Goodluck Jonathan It was also resolved that when the primary election comes, rather than including it in the constitution, other aspirants will be asked to step down for President Jonathan like what happened at the 2012 National Convention where other aspirants stepped down for Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Vanguard gathered that to allow tempers rise especially from the anti-Tukur’s camp, the meeting became the shortest in the history of NEC, just as it was gathered that only item five on the agenda was taken after Mao Ohabunwa moved a motion for the ratification of the item, “Ratification of Date for the Special National Convention” His motion was seconded by former National Woman Leader, Hajia Maryam Inna Ciroma. It will be recalled that the Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT of PDP, Chief Tony Anenih had at a meeting of the party’s leaders in South-South region, proposed the granting of automatic tickets to a sitting president and governors, just as he stressed that PDP must not subject the president to the party’s primary election. Chief Anenih also at a dinner meeting called by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja with select leaders of the party drawn from the federal and state levels, said he did not see any problem in PDP extending the gesture to the president to serve a second term without going through the rigours of primary election. Anenih had on May 30, said, “Party leaders, brothers and sisters listening to reports of Ministers of various sectors at the Democracy Day celebration held at the International Conference Centre on May 29, 2013, I felt proud that Nigerians have not been disappointed by this administration, fulfilled by his own achievements, President Jonathan confidently asked Nigerians to develop their own criteria in judging his performance during the last two years. “I do not see anything wrong if the PDP considers automatic tickets for the President and its Governors who have performed well and are seeking for a second term. It is my view that with the outstanding performance of President Jonathan in the areas of power, rail, and water, transformation, road construction, aviation reforms, education, agriculture, job creation, etc, the party should not find it difficult in granting him the opportunity to serve a second term if he so desires. At today’s emergency NEC meeting which will have President Goodluck Jonathan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other members in attendance will deliberate on the crises rocking the party, as well as assess the successes recorded by Governor Seriake Dickson-led National Reconciliation Committee. Nigeria risks losing $185bn within 10 years as higher taxes proposed by a new law will deter investments in the country's oil industry, an association of energy companies including Exxon Mobil, has said. The nation's oil production may slump by 25 per cent from 2.4 Million barrels a day if the Petroleum Industry Bill is implemented, the Managing Director of Exxon Mobil Corporation's Migerian unit, Mr. Mark Ward, said in Lagos on Friday, according to a Bloomberg report. The loss of investment caused by the law would leave it insufficient to tackle decline rates at oilfields, said Ward, representing the Oil Producers Trade Section at a conference in the commercial capital. "The terms proposed increase royalties, increase taxes and lower allowances or incentives all at the same time," said ward. Energy companies are "deeply concerned" as the new tax proposals will "create one of the world's harshest fiscal regimes." The new law is aimed at reforming the way Nigeria's oil and gas industry is regulated and funded, and seeks to increase the government's share of profit from oil pumped to at least 73 per cent, from 61 per cent currently, according to Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The Oil Producers Trade Section are Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Chevron Corporation, Exxon Mobil, Total sa and Eni SpA. The companies pump about 90 per cent of Nigeria's oil through ventures with the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. Proposed increased taxes in the legislation would make exploration "uneconomical," they said in a joint presentation to lawmakers last month. Source |
More than 100 persons brought in from Lagos State; Jos, the Plateau State capital; and other parts of the country to register as voters in Anambra State in the ongoing voters revalidation exercise were on Sunday arrested and detained by the police in the state. Also arrested were two members of the Independent National Electoral Commission ad hoc staff who were the registration and assistant registration officers for Unit 013, Ovala Square, Igbariam. They are National Youth Service Corps members recruited to register voters during the revalidation exercise. The police also impounded two luxurious buses that were used to bring the arrested voters from Lagos and Jos for the exercise. INEC had last week disclosed that there w ere 93,000 fake voters in Anambra State. The 'imported voters,' who were arrested at Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area said they had been mobilised and brought in to register by the Ifeanyi Ubah Fan Club, a political group made up of the supporters of Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah, one of the governorship aspirants for the November 16 election in the state. One of the detainees, Mr. Bonaventure Ofieli, who said he was a trader based in Jos, said the Ifeanyi Ubah Fan Club in Jos had provided them with the fund for their trip to Anambra State to register for the election. He said he hailed from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Ubah is a governorship aspirant of the Labour Party. The party is due to hold its primaries on Wednesday in Awka, the Anambra State capital. But the Director-General of the Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation, Chief Dan Ulasi, criticised the arrest of the voters, saying there was nothing wrong in mobilising registered voters to come home to vote. He said the innocent citizens were being unnecessarily punished for offering to obey a national call to exercise their franchise. He said the organisation might go to court to seek remedy for the detained persons. The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government, Mr. Chinedu Obidigwe, said his attention had been drawn to the registration unit in front of the palace of the traditional ruler of Igbariam, Igwe N.N. Kelly by locals, who claimed to have noticed strange faces about to get registered. He said on getting to the unit, he interviewed the strangers, who admitted that they were brought in to register as voters but that they were not residing in the area. Source As you can see, they have already showing their true colors. We know what we want. |
