The Academic Staff Union of Universities says it is yet to conclude consultations with its members on the possible agreement presented by the Federal Government.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, said the union was still consulting.



NAN recalled that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, on Monday met with the striking lecturers at a reconciliatory meeting.

Ngige said some agreement had been reached, that the Federal Government had released N15.4 billion for the payment of the salary shortfalls, which was one of the major demands of the union.



“On the issue of salaries in tertiary institutions, especially in universities, the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General provided evidence that as of Dec. 31, 2018, the Federal Government had remitted N15.4 billion.

“Also on the issue of Earned Allowances in the universities system, they also showed us evidence that Mr President has approved the N20 billion to be used to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 and 2012 audit verified earnings, in the university system,” he said.

The minister, however, said that the fund was being worked on, and would be released to ASUU as soon as the process was completed.



Ngige also told the striking workers to take the possible agreement reached back to their members and should get back to Federal Government on Thursday, Jan. 10 for possibly calling off the strike embarked upon since Nov. 4, 2018.

According to the ASUU president, the strike is still on.

He said, “So, we are still consulting and will be getting back to the Federal Government today."

The Catholic Church bases her teaching upon one source: The word of God. This divine revelation is transmitted in two ways: through Scripture and apostolic tradition. In a bid to save Venezuela from hyperinflation, embattled President Nicolás Maduro has mandated that his Petro cryptocurrency become the nation’s second official currency.

By August 20, Venezuela will have two new official currencies: the “sovereign Bolivar” and the Petro cryptocurrency – valued equally and supposedly interchangeable.

“As of next Monday, Venezuela will have a second accounting unit based on […] the value of the Petro.” Maduro declared in a televised address (spotted by Sputnik). “It will be a second accounting unit of the Republic and will begin operations as a mandatory accounting unit of our PDVSA oil industry.”

The Petro is Maduro’s pet project – a cryptocurrency backed by barrels of oil. It’s been speculated that his plan has been to skirt harsh international sanctions imposed on his government by conducting international trade with Petro rather than the Bolivar.

Well, now we have confirmation: not only will the Petro have to be used by the state oil industry, it’s also to be pegged to the new “sovereign Bolivar,” meaning the Petro will technically the official stablecoin of Venezuela.

Maduro confirmed that the valuations of each currency will come from the Central Bank (CBV). He also teased a new salary system built for paying wages in Petro, and a new pricing guidelines for goods and services to match, but no real details were given.

The new Bolivar is also just a reissue of the old one, but with a fancy stamp on it, and less value. Citizens will be able to claim one sovereign Bolivar for every 100,000 old-school Bolivar they own.

Venezuela’s hyperinflation index reached one million recently. Bloomberg reporting that a coffee, once worth just 450 Bolivar, now costs one million. The Bolivar is so worthless, in fact, that one million Bolivar is the equivalent of roughly 30 American cents.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force station on its historic mission to the Sun.
The probe lit up the night sky as it blasted off at 3:31 a.m. EDT.
“It was a really clean launch,” Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, told reporters. “It took off like it should.”
“Everything was exactly like we thought it would be – it really was textbook,” he added.
Carried by a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket, Parker lifted off from Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 37. The launch had intially been scheduled for early Saturday, but last-minute technical glitches ate away at the launch window, prompting a 24-hour delay.
The $1.5 billion mission will take humanity closer to the Sun than ever before. Parker will be the first spacecraft to fly through the Sun’s corona, the outermost part of the star’s atmosphere. It is expected to reach the Sun in November.

A 29-year-old woman , Mrs Ndidi Odo from igbo Eze South LGA, ENUGU State, though reside in Anambra has given birth to quintuplets. She was delivered at God’s Mercy Hospital, Obiuno, Otolo-Nnewi.
Many people gathered to behold the couple, Mr and Mrs Abuchi Odo, and their quintuplets. The mother of the five new-born babies (four boys and a girl) said she didn’t know that she was carrying quintuplets in her womb and that scan only revealed that she would give birth to twins.

According to her, she earlier had three girls which she got one after the other in different pregnancies, saying the girls were followed by triplets (two boys and a girl). She, however, explained that she later lost the boys and was left with four girls, noting that she prepared for her last pregnancy which she hoped would produce a boy only to be blessed with four boys and a girl. Mrs Odo, an apprentice tailor, who was delivered of the quintuplets through caesarean section, said she was in good health but needed assistance of well-meaning individuals as the family could not cater for nine children. A nurse in God’s Mercy Hospital, Blessing Odemena, who had a tough time warding off the mammoth crowd that trooped to her hospital, narrated how the lady came to her to complain that she was desirous of having a baby boy as is customary in Igboland. Odoemena corroborated the new mother’s claim that the scanning done during antenatal revealed a set of twins but that when her patient’s stomach became too big, the doctor prescribed another scan which indicated triplets. The father of the new babies, Mr Abuchi Odo, a tricycle operator, who said he wanted to run away after realizing the magnitude of the responsibility that just fell on him, said he was prevailed upon to stay back by one Prince Justin Brown and his elder brother. He said his old tricycle could not put food on the table for nine children outside him and his wife. He appealed to Governor Willie Obiano, Mr. Peter Obi, Cletus Ibeto, Dr Ifeanyi Uba, Sir Louis Onwugbuenu, Dame Virgy Etiaba, Archbishop Godwin Okpala and Bishop Hilary Okeke and other eminent personalities in the state and beyond for help. Prince Justin Brown, a family friend of the Odos, also pleaded with public-spirited individuals to help the struggling family to keep the babies
