The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has observed that 90 per cent of women awaiting trial in prisons across the country are either pregnant or nursing mothers or pregnant, pointing out that there was no amount of compensation that would be given to such a child or even the mother that can make up for the hardship endured.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, who made this known yesterday when he received the National President, National Council of Women Societies, Mrs. Gloria Shoda, in his office in Abuja, disclosed that the percentage was derived from the commission’s recent prison audit in the country.

The Director of Directorate of Citizens Rights, DCR, Omotilewa Ibirogba, had some time ago stated that nine pregnant women and eight babies are among 222 inmates inside the high walls of the female section of Kirikiri prisons.


Angwe pointed out that the commission needed the collaboration of the NCWS to provide an immediate intervention in this regard.

According to him, “In our prisons today, we have a lot of nursing mothers who are being locked up with their children and are nursing these children in the prison cells.

“We also have instances where such women who are still carrying babies in prison are also pregnant.

“It is also sad to note that more than 90 per cent of these nursing mothers are still awaiting trial. These are women that should have been released on bail while awaiting their trial.


“But they are kept there in prison with their children who are made to serve prison terms when their mothers are not yet convicted,’’ he added.

Stating that there was no amount of compensation that would be given to such a child or even the mother in such a condition, the NHRC stated, “One therefore wonders how in a situation where such mothers are eventually discharged as innocent citizens, how much compensation can be given to a child who is made to pass through the conditions that we presently have in our prisons.’’

He further noted that in spite of several campaigns both internationally and nationally to end discrimination against women, it still existed in form of cultural practices.

“We must recognise the fact that in spite of the huge campaign toward eliminating all kinds of discrimination against women, we still have in existence some form of discriminatory acts against women.

“Many of these acts are hidden under what we call culture and this has contributed largely to the huge number of cases we receive that represent the violation of the rights of all women.”
Angwe advised the NCWS executives not to allow politicians to use the association to score cheap political points, stating that “The society which comprises of over 80 million women should not be used for political purposes.

“The NHRC will not stand back and watch the leadership of the NCWS follow politicians during campaigns because you are supposed to be neutral.’’

Speaking earlier, the NCWS president had said that they were at the commission in light of an MoU the association signed with the NHRC on the protection of the rights of women, youths and children in June.

She said the visit was specifically to evolve the best ways to execute the MoU, particularly with regards to issues of gender-based violence and the Child Rights Act.

Shoda gave the assurance that the association would work with the commission to promote the rights of women, youths and children, particularly sensitisation campaign

Using the O'level as point grade for admission is a big slap for those struggling for admission. Imagine a person who had 5A's with malpractices getting on the list.
The post-ume is really better the this grade point antleast until we get our education ministry right and rid it of malpractices.

Kinda shocked the cutt-offs are high.

Thank God am not facing this sha. Me wey get ordinary 4 B's and 4 c's for waec. in our time for 2009.

I remember that day in 2010 when I did my first & last post-ume in Unilag. 40 thick question for 40 min. Thick maths, physics, chemistry and English. No computer based then. It was all papers.

In my opinion, he should have asked her to choose between the examination and wearing an attire that interferes with smooth running of the examination, just to give her a chance. In his shoes though, I don't think I will allow that. Garments that can conceal suspicious materials are not encouraged. We witnessed even tertiary institutions take examinations in singlets and underwears and aside from general murmurs, no special attention was sought. Does that mean the religion of those affected encourage Nudity?

Religion and Western Education ought not to conflict.

Brazil Senate voted on Thursday morning to suspend President Dilma Rouseff and begin an impeachment trial against her, the unpopularity of the preisident have soared in recent times due to the endemic corruption and economic downturn of the country.


In a vote of 55 to 22, lawmakers accepted the charges against Ms. Rousseff, accusing her of borrowing from state banks to conceal a looming deficit, “We could no longer ignore these crimes and thus voted for impeachment,” Álvaro Dias, a senator from the Green Party, said shortly before casting his vote. “Having been assaulted by incompetence and wrongdoing, Brazilians expect punishment.”
During her impeachment trial, which could last six months, Ms. Rousseff would be replaced by Vice President Michel Temer.

Ms. Rousseff, the first woman to be president of Brazil has describe the effort to remove her as a political coup, has repeatedly rejected calls to resign, vowing to continue her fight to stay at the helm of Latin America’s largest country.

But given the margin of opposition against her on Thursday, political analysts said she stood little chance of winning the trial and finishing the remaining two and a half years of her final term in office.

Nigerian Senate today has thrown out the Gender equality and opportunity bill at second reading that will end gender discrimination. The bill is being sponsor by Senator Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti South)

Background: Gender and Equal Opportunity (GEO) Bill is a direct response to the concerns on the delays in the domestication of gender focused international treaties/conventions particularly CEDAW and the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. It incorporates certain aspects of CEDAW, the African Union Protocol on the Rights of Women and the National Gender Policy.



Rationale: GEO bill is the affirmation of a golden thread that runs through the three afore-mentioned instruments and the need for harmonization. The positive impact of the provisions within the social and legal contexts of the Nigerian society giving careful consideration to sensibilities as well as the avoidance of duplications also informed the harmonization.



Goal: is to provide a legislation that seeks to eliminate all forms of discrimination on the basis of sex and gender in private and public spaces, affirms women’s rights to equal opportunities to realize their full potential and provide protection for their bodily integrity and human dignity.



The GEO Bill seeks to give effect to:

Chapters II and IV of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The International Covenants on Human Rights which affirms the principle of non -discrimination and proclaim that all human are born free and equal in dignity and rights, and that everyone is entitled to all the rights set out without distinction of any kind including distinction based on sex;
The domestication of certain aspects of the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa and the National Gender Policy.
The Bill is structured into three parts:

Part A:

This part contains the substantive sections covering all forms of discrimination against women. Thus you will find sections dealing with the prohibition of discrimination; and adoption of temporary special measures to eliminate discrimination in political and public life; in the field of education; employment; health; on grounds of marital status; and on socio-economic grounds. There are sections on the promotion of equality, full development and advancement of all persons and the modification of socio-cultural practices that discriminate against women. The right to choose Indigenship and identity; the rights of persons in rural communities; rights in matters relating to marriage and family relations are given prominence in the bill. In this part, the bill addresses the prohibition of violence against women; marriage and matrimonial causes; provisions relating to offences and sentencing including costs, damages and compensations.

Part B:

Provides for the establishment of an Equal Opportunities Commission which will among other things monitor and supervise the implementation of the bill as well as investigate and apply to the appropriate court or tribunal for an order of assessment of practices of any person, organ, body, institution, private or public organ in accordance with the bill…[1]. This part of the draft bill further provides for the functions, funds and membership of the commission as well as the appointment of a secretary and tenure of office. Other provisions include resignation from office; power to appoint, dismiss or exercise discipline; meetings of the commission; legal obligations to give information to the commission; rules and regulations of the commission; failure to comply with direction for reversal of discrimination; jurisdiction; procedure and a miscellaneous section.

Part C: This part simply and innovatively seeks to enforce the National Gender Policy.

Review of The "House of Cards" Intriguing Political Drama Series

Oil prices are sky high. The president of the United States has committed murder with his own hands. The Democratic primary is a heated contest filled with lies and backstabbing. And the Kremlin is on the verge of being overthrown by a cadre of Russian liberal businessmen. Sound like a parallel universe? Sort of: It’s the beginning of Season Four of House of Cards.

Netflix’s binge-inducing political drama was released Friday and the latest installment picks up right at the moment where Season Three left off. President Frank Underwood, is on the 2016 campaign trail in his election bid to hold onto the seat of power he has coveted throughout the series. Underwood’s relationship with his wife, Claire, is strained(More or less like Bill Clinton relationship with Hilary during the Lewinsky saga)— their marriage and political partnership is hanging in the balance.


House of Cards continues to pull the thread of the Russia plot line that it spun last season, with a financially-strained Kremlin now seeking an International Monetary Fund bailout. Victor Petrov, the show’s Putin-esque surrogate, is combative and paranoid of Washington’s meddling in Moscow, much to the chagrin of Frank Underwood who is seeking to mend ties after the geopolitical fallout of Season Three.

As is becoming the norm with House of Cards, the show succeeds in ramping up the drama and taking its characters’ personal stories to new and unexpected places.But as with its second season’s China trade and politburo plotline, or the third season’s Russian intervention in the Jordan Valley, the show once again struggles to transform its soap
opera formula into plausible foreign policy. But perhaps the more unforgivable sin is its cursory handling of an election cycle at a time when America is in the throes of its most dramatic and unexpected campaign in years.

The show actually is: A dark, well-produced soap opera, not a reflection of anything resembling realistic politics but intriguing and gives a mere insight of the politicking game.Last season, the show devoted a huge stretch of its early episodes to international events: Claire had a brief stint as America’s ambassador to the United Nations before being forced out by behind-the-scenes intrigue involving Russia’s president.

The show also touched on LGBT rights in Russia before moving on the Middle East, taking its soapy style to exploring a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine.The fourth season once again doesn’t shy away from global storylines; it returns to Russia, but this time focuses on palace intrigue in the Kremlin

In another development that is sure to have major repercussions in future episodes, Washington and Beijing conspire to divide control of Siberian oil fields, with little explanation as to why they would cooperate so closely.Luckily, the international events mostly loom ominously in the background and are a foil for drama in the United States that the show handles more eloquently. Review of The "House of Cards" Intriguing Political Drama Series

Oil prices are sky high. The president of the United States has committed murder with his own hands. The Democratic primary is a heated contest filled with lies and backstabbing. And the Kremlin is on the verge of being overthrown by a cadre of Russian liberal businessmen. Sound like a parallel universe? Sort of: It’s the beginning of Season Four of House of Cards.

Netflix’s binge-inducing political drama was released Friday and the latest installment picks up right at the moment where Season Three left off. President Frank Underwood, is on the 2016 campaign trail in his election bid to hold onto the seat of power he has coveted throughout the series. Underwood’s relationship with his wife, Claire, is strained(More or less like Bill Clinton relationship with Hilary during the Lewinsky saga)— their marriage and political partnership is hanging in the balance.


House of Cards continues to pull the thread of the Russia plot line that it spun last season, with a financially-strained Kremlin now seeking an International Monetary Fund bailout. Victor Petrov, the show’s Putin-esque surrogate, is combative and paranoid of Washington’s meddling in Moscow, much to the chagrin of Frank Underwood who is seeking to mend ties after the geopolitical fallout of Season Three.

As is becoming the norm with House of Cards, the show succeeds in ramping up the drama and taking its characters’ personal stories to new and unexpected places.But as with its second season’s China trade and politburo plotline, or the third season’s Russian intervention in the Jordan Valley, the show once again struggles to transform its soap
opera formula into plausible foreign policy. But perhaps the more unforgivable sin is its cursory handling of an election cycle at a time when America is in the throes of its most dramatic and unexpected campaign in years.

The show actually is: A dark, well-produced soap opera, not a reflection of anything resembling realistic politics but intriguing and gives a mere insight of the politicking game.Last season, the show devoted a huge stretch of its early episodes to international events: Claire had a brief stint as America’s ambassador to the United Nations before being forced out by behind-the-scenes intrigue involving Russia’s president.

The show also touched on LGBT rights in Russia before moving on the Middle East, taking its soapy style to exploring a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine.The fourth season once again doesn’t shy away from global storylines; it returns to Russia, but this time focuses on palace intrigue in the Kremlin

In another development that is sure to have major repercussions in future episodes, Washington and Beijing conspire to divide control of Siberian oil fields, with little explanation as to why they would cooperate so closely.Luckily, the international events mostly loom ominously in the background and are a foil for drama in the United States that the show handles more eloquently. The transition of countries mode of governance around the world into democratic rule since the end of the cold war against communism have witnessed many countries especially in the African continent moved from autocratic to democratic rule.
African continent have witnessed several civil wars than any continent since the last 3 decades.Rebel groups taking control of political power, Military ruling in sheer dictatorial manner in most part of the continent,and even countries which boast of democracy has made efforts to allow incumbent in office for decades.

The large scale of underdevelopment in the continent has deprived the people of fundamental human rights. No thanks to the colonial masters who have always wanted to control several of these nations even after independence.

The introduction of democracy to Africa has further empowered more despot to device cunning alternative to remain in power through legitimate rule.Maneuvering of the electoral system, intimidation of opposition and endemic corruption of important institution. African presidents that have conducted elections which voted them out of office most times concede defeat because of international pressure as the case of the kenneth kaunda of Zambia who probably did so because of Jimmy Carter presence in Zambia during the elections. Joyce Banda of Malawi and Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria are all victims of such.

In terms of resources, the African continent has everything neccessary for her development. Unexplored raw materials lying fallow in almost ever country, large base of human resources are been underutilized. More recently uprising has seen despot like of Laurent Gbagbo of Cote de voire, Gadaffi of Libya, Ben Alli of Tunisia,and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt leave office through several "failed" revolutions that have left those countries in worse comditions than it were.
For Africa to grow as a continent, the people must ascertain if democracy or these "sit tightism" rule is the best for the continent. One might tend to argue that large percentage of prosperous countries do not practice democracy.One question that must be ask is "If Democracy Is The Best For The Continent"

If democracy is preffered, the people, African Union and the international community must step up their game in ensuring that the people's voice are not thwarted by microscopic few. policy must be made to discourage and sanction these leaders on their sit tightism stand.

The Brutal Face Of War; The Ankara Bomb Explosion



There was an explosion at the Turkish capital, Ankara yesterday which have reportedly killed 30 people and left over 61 injured. The explosion was heard across the capital when it went off at about 6.15pm local time.

Just as i have predicted yesterday that the attack might have come as a retaliation of turkish intense operation on the syrian border against the Kurdish militants in the wake of a syrian peace treaty. Turkey were desperately looking to gain more grounds into Syria before the signing of the treaty so that they would have an upper hand.What they got was a bomb explosion in their capital.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan convened an emergency security meeting in the wake of the blast, which is likely to inflame tensions over Turkey's growing involvement in the war in Syria.He and his prime minster Ahmet Davoglu has cancelled their trips to Azerbaijan and Belgium respectively in the wake of the attack.

Turkey has been shelling positions inside Syria near their shared border, held by the PKK's local affiliate, the YPG kurdish militant s which has been backed by Russia against anti-Assad rebels and by the US against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). The explosion isthe second attack in this year after 11 people were killed at an a mid last month.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu have confirmed that Ankara bombing was conducted by a Syrian member of the YPG Kurdish militant group.

My prayers, Nigeria has started this journey to greatness (liberation from oil dependency), I won't pray for anything to derail it. Lets fix Nigeria once and for all

Even if the cease deal goes through, There will be US led coalition in Syria. Some countries are being accused of buying crude from ISIS, those countries would be sanctioned, then they will be forced to buy oil from other source. Demand might go higher

A LITTLE TOO LATE FOR SAUDI ARABIA INTERVENTION IN SYRIA!

Saudi Arabia have hinted the possibility of sending ground troops to Syria after five years of war that have left over 250,000 people dead and millions displaced.
Saudi officials are waiting to see if a planned cease-fire transpires and for a sign-off from the US-led coalition.

President Assad have warned Saudi Arabia and Turkey on the implication of sending troops to his country without his authorization. Although the Russian fighter jet have been shelling the Rebel and Isis control areas in recent times killing hundreds of innocent civilians.

This decision is likely to affect world oil prices significantly as majors player in the oil markets are on the verge of war. One of ISIS major source of funding is the income they get from their acquired oil installations. The destructions of these installations by a US-led coallition or Saudi and Turkish troops would greatly affect world prices. Oil producing countries like Nigeria might stand to benefit greatly in the coming months.

Indeed Nixon efforts on the environment were commendable. I believe the epa and the NEPA acts have strengthened American fight against the abuse of its environment. (Rachel Carson silent spring was the spur to all that)
Clinton lied about his affairs but what Nixon did was a gross abuse of power. When Watergate came to light, he sought to discredit all those who wanted him to come clean.
My main focus was to dismiss the notion you need military background and I used Clinton records to show that while I used the most 'unlucky' Nixon records to buttress that point.

Unless you tell me that Truman who blew up Japan killing millions even after he knows Japan was ready to surrender, Or Wilson might have had a hand in new structure in the UN after the league of Nation was squashed. I still think Clinton is the best in the last century.
