1. Kanu knew all along that he breached conditions of bail. That when his court date comes up he will be locked up permanently, and possibly killed in detention. So he did not intend ever to return to Binta Nyako's court. His plan was to escape before the court date.

(By the way, you know that the head of BZM died in detention, right?)

2. An arrangement was already hatched and sealed to smuggle him out, they were just waiting for it to happen few days or hours to his court appearance.

3. On the side, Kanu was apprehensive. He became even more apprehensive after Kaduna Declaration. Even SE governors and Ohanaeze leaders were afraid that the Northerners were going to trigger something and force a Biafra they were not prepared for. If that happened, all the chips will fall into Kanu's hands and he will hold all the bargaining power for Biafra. They had to options, swallow pride and beg North or bluff their way and dare North. Either option must devise a solution to eliminate Kanu.

4. SE governors and Ohanaeze begged North and de-escalated Kaduna Declaration. Part of the condition to take KD off table was that Ibo leaders must resolve Kanu situation. They were accused of sponsoring him as attack dog against North.

5. Nwabueze got Kanu and SE leaders together to meet and resolve the Biafra issue.

6. They wanted Kanu to drop down from secession to restructure. Kanu refused. They were gripped by the earlier fear that if they did not get rid of Kanu, he will become a change agent no one in SE wanted. At the same time they recognized that Kanu could be molded and turned to a Amnesty fund through IPOB.

7. Army dropped in on the 10th of September and conducted a mock exercise in war tanks blaring music and shooting into air as they passed front of Kanu gate. Before nightfall they had killed some IPOBs. This was a red flag for Kanu and his supporters.

8. Kanu did not sleep at home and was ported out, with his family and parents, through the forest of Abia on the 12th.

9. There was a followup meeting between him and the SE leaders on the 12th. He did not show. He had dissapeared from the scene.

10. The military show of force was an invitation by SE govs to shake down Kanu and deterr him from turning down the offer to downgrade from secession to restructuring.

11. In the meeting of 10th Sept Kanu had tentatively told them its possible but a decision must wait till after his meeting with IPOB leaders for concurrence. He figured he would have answer at the followup mtng of 12thbut Army harassed him evening of 10th and killed his members.

13. He activated the escape route earlier scheduled and dissapeared.

14. Army discovered later that Kanu was not around, laid seige in the compound, and with rage wiped everything out, Kanu or no Kanu.


There are chatters that SE leaders did not want the Army to hurt him because they saw him as an asset and a version of their own militant squad to be reserved for time of need. They wanted him just shaken down enough to back off secession. So they were equally shocked of how event turned out the evening of 10th, and moreso that of 14th. It is believed they facilitated his exit out of Nigeria and into a neighbouring country using diplomatic privilege. Some said he was freighted to Gabon, and from where he obtained replacement travel documents to enter Israel for asylum. Israel will not hold him long. As British citizen he must file for new passport and return to UK soon.
