U.S. sportswear maker Nike was hit with a 12.5 million euros fine on Monday for blocking cross-border sales of football merchandise of some of Europe’s best-known clubs.

Reuters reports that the fine, which is about 10.7 million pounds or N5.6 billion, is the latest European Union (EU) sanction against such restrictions.

The European Commission, which oversees EU’s activities, said Nike’s illegal practices occurred between 2004 to 2017.

It said the practices were related to licensed merchandise for FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, AS Roma and the French Football Federation (FFF).

The European Union case focused on Nike’s role as a licensor for making and distributing licensed merchandise featuring a football club’s brands and not its own trademarks.

The sanction came after a two-year investigation triggered by a sector inquiry into e-commerce in the 28-country bloc.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said Nike’s actions deprived football fans in other countries of the opportunity to buy their clubs’ merchandise such as mugs, bags, bed sheets, stationery and toys.

“Nike prevented many of its licensees from selling these branded products in a different country leading to less choice and higher prices for consumers,” she said in a statement.

Nike’s practices included clauses in contracts prohibiting out-of-territory sales by licensees and threats to end agreements if licensees ignored the clauses.

Her son Ryan Urich said his mother died on Christmas Eve, surrounded by her children and family members.
“She was an actress, a ballerina and loved living her life to the fullest,” her son said in a statement to Variety. “She was not in any pain but, nearly four weeks after her diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, she had enough and took her last breath on this earth at 7:22 p.m.”

Born in Toronto, Menzies-Urich was 15 when she was cast as the third-oldest of the seven von Trapp children in 1965’s The Sound of Music alongside Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The big-screen adaptation of the Broadway show was a worldwide hit and won five Oscars including Best Picture.
She went on to star in films including Hawaii and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and later starred as Jessica in the 1977 TV series Logan’s Run.
Kym Karath, who played Gretl, the youngest of the von Trapp children, mourned her celluloid sibling on Twitter, writing, “I am filled with infinite sadness tonight. My precious friend and SOM sister Heather Menzies passed away this evening. Devastated.”

Popular actor, Kit Harington popularly known by his name “Jon Snow” on the hit HBO series is winning both in Game of Thrones and real life..

The actor, who was a fairly unknown actor until he joined Game of Thrones, reportedly earns £2m (N928m) per episode of the hit HBO fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

Harington is, however, not the only person making that amount; other stars — Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Danish co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lanister) also earn £2m in each episode of the film.

The big cash had come from bonus clauses, which saw the stars earning percentages of the syndication payments that come from the record-breaking show being aired in more than 170 countries.

The stars are also said to be benefitting from payments from re-runs, with shows earning audiences of up to 23 million people during the sixth season.
Meanwhile, Harington is reportedly worth $12m (N4.3bn).

John Edwards allowed himself to be buried by his friends and family so as to raise awareness for those suffering from addiction and depression. John chose Ash Wednesday to be 'laid to rest' because that is the start of lent and the day on which Christians are encouraged to die to self. Just before being buried, John who was formerly an addict kissed his wife goodbye then was lowered into the coffin placed under the streets of Belfast, outside Willowfield Parish Church after which the lid was placed and dirt poured on it.
From the grave, John will be live streaming advice to addicts and those suffering from depression and broadcasting stories of hope. Broadband internet and electronics were fixed in the coffin to make it possible for him to communicate online with people. While
The former addict founded the charity Walking Free, which helps people who are suicidal and those with addiction. He will live stream help and advice to addicts from inside his coffin.

"I'm a former addict and I've been clean and sober for 25 years. I'm making a very large coffin, I'm burying it in East Belfast and I'm going to live in it for three days," John told Belfast Live prior to his burial.

“I know this is a radical move but people are continually contacting me who are either suicidal or who know friends or family who are. My plan is to speak to them from the grave before they get there and show them hope.”

Racially abused striker saves life of opponent goal keeper in Czech League

Racially abused by their fans, Togolese striker Francis Kone has taken on hero status after saving a rival goalkeeper’s life in a Czech top-flight game last weekend.

Half an hour into Saturday’s tie pitting Bohemians 1905 Prague against FC Slovacko, Bohemians keeper Martin Berkovec sprinted towards the edge of the box to head out a long pass. He crashed into his teammate, defender Daniel Krch, who was also running after the ball at full speed. The home crowd in Prague watched in horror as the impact left the 28-year-old Berkovec unconscious on the pitch with a swallowed tongue. Swept to the ground by the tumbling keeper Slovacko striker Kone was first to provide emergency first aid as soon as he stood up.
“I was close because I was involved in the play,” Kone told AFP on Monday.
He managed to pull out Berkovec’s tongue in the time it took Bohemians’ medical staff to arrive at the scene after waiting for the referee to wave them onto the pitch and run some 60 metres (yards).
“Seconds matter in a situation like this. If you swallow your tongue you start to choke, the flow of air into the brain stops, so you have to act as fast as possible,” said Bohemians spokesman Tomas Mutinsky.
“If Martin is in a stable condition today, it is largely thanks to Francis,” he told AFP.
“I would like to thank Francis Kone for his prompt help that saved my life. Once again, THANK YOU,” Berkovec wrote on Facebook.
The keeper is set to meet his saviour soon. “He has invited me for dinner,” said Kone.
One Bohemians fan tweeted his thanks to Kone after the goalless draw: “He taught me something today, and not only me.”
Another fan who was in the stands on Saturday told Bohemians’ club website how Kone’s quick thinking had impacted on the club’s hard core fans.
“Two guys were sitting next to me. Racists. Their language was…(racist), monkey stuff,” he said.
And then comes the shock. Endless seconds. Martin falls and doesn’t move. Kone is the first to arrive. He pulls the keeper’s tongue out. A rival. A black guy. The entire stadium is silent, including the two guys. I don’t give a damn about the score. Martin will be OK, Francis Kone helped him.
Born in Bondoukou in the northeast of Ivory Coast, Kone has taken advantage of his mother’s nationality to play for Togo since 2013. At 26, he has had a varied career, having played for several clubs in Thailand (Muangthong United FC, PTT Rayong), Oman (Al-Musannah), Portugal (Olhanense) and Hungary (Honved Budapest) before joining Slovacko in 2015.
“This is the fourth time it has happened to me — (I’ve experienced this) once in Thailand and twice in Africa,” said Kone. “and no, I don’t have medical education,” he chuckles. “In this type of situation, I always make sure whether the player has not swallowed his tongue.”
