Education / Analysis Of The Song Of The Women Of My Land by zona01: 8:32pm On Sep 15, 2020
Structural Analysis
The poem ‘The Song of the Women of my Land’ is an elegy. The poem has 45 lines. It is a free verse with scattered internal rhymes, which give the poem some rhythm. The poem has a lot of run-on-line (enjambment); this helps convey the poet’s subject matter. In general, it has eight stanzas. The first stanza has one line, while the fifth has two lines.
The mood of the poet is that of sadness. The poet is regretful of the state of his people’s history. His reflective mood reveals the lost beauty of his nation’s cultural heritage.

Driver on his Retirement by Onu Kingsley Chibuike

Many years on wheels
In faithful service to his fatherland
Today retires he home
And a celebration he holds
Many years has he pummeled his boozy throat
In obedience to duty rules and regulations
Today, he’ll go home a Freeman
Eligible for his country’s services
“Come, friends, rejoice with me
I shall booze and zoom myself home
Away from duty rules
Come celebrate my freedom”
“Early to duty tomorrow holds not,
Thirty-five years of faithful services
I’ll booze to sleep away my sufferings
Today I’ve long waited for”
More joy to send him home.
A brand new car in his name
An appreciative symbol
For undented thirty-five years of service to
Fatherland

Education / JAMB Summary And Probable 150 Questions On Sarah Ladipo Manyika's In Dependence by zona01: 8:58pm On May 07, 2017

SUMMARY
The text In Dependence tells a love story between Tayo Ajayi and Vanessa Richardson whereby circumstances and societal factors around them such as racism, cultural differences and political turbulence affected a supposedly genuine love affair. Tayo Ajayi was a Nigerian man who gets a scholarship to study at Oxford in the 1960s while Vanessa Richardson was the daughter of an ex-colonial officer. The story of their love spans from 1963 to 1999. The novel in connection with its title In Dependence uncovers the story of Nigeria’s political atmosphere from Independence to the Fourth Republic. It presents the changes that occurred in the country’s post-independence era –the first coup, the Civil war, the numerous counter coups, military dictatorships, the brief return to civilian rule, exile of Nigerian intellectuals, and the eventual return to democracy towards the end of the novel. Manyika revels in her ability to expose certain issues prevalent in the society such as race or racism, stereotype and cultural differences. She manages to show how these factors affect her characters.
Tayo is an intelligent young man who later becomes a Professor of History. Tayo is the protagonist of this story. Tayo’s weakness as a hero is presented by his inability to manage relationships with the female gender in his life. He concentrated mainly in his work and office duties than his loved ones. That seemed like a pattern in his life which led to the painful death of Christine – his Nigerian girlfriend in College, the break up with Vanessa, the death of his mother, the altercation with Hawa, the divorce with his wife and lose of Kemi’s love and respect. It seemed like it was a fate Tayo couldn’t run away from because each time he tried to make the right decision he ended up hurting the people he thought he was protecting.
