Retired lieutenant general: Military members are 'furious' with Trump over alleged comments on fallen soldiers
BY BROOKE SEIPEL - 09/04/20 06:55 PM EDT

Retired Lt. General Mark Hertling said in a CNN interview that he has spoken with active military members as well as veterans who are "furious" after it was reported that President Trump called fallen soldiers "losers" and "suckers."

"It's tough to speak out right now if you're an active-duty serving general officer," Hertling told CNN's Don Lemon while discussing the reaction to Trump's alleged comments. "By not saying anything, they're saying a lot."

His comment comes after The Atlantic reported that Trump canceled a trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 because he was worried his hair would become disheveled by the rain, and openly asked senior staff why he should go to a cemetery that is filled with “losers.”

The Atlantic story also claims that Trump referred to Marines killed at the Belleau Wood during World War I as “suckers.”

Herling went on to say in the Thursday interview that the military officers he has spoken with are outraged over the report.

"The military, the veterans I've talked to tonight, they are furious about this and they can't understand why people are still supporting this individual who is doing these kinds of things," he said.

Trump has vehemently denied the claims from the report, which sparked an immediate backlash.

“It was a totally fake story, and that was confirmed by many people that were actually there,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday. “It was a terrible thing that somebody could say the kind of things — especially to me because I have done more for the military than almost anybody else.”

Wisefellow:
With abundance of crude oil in Nigeria, the past and present government have continued to export crude oil and import refined products for our domestic consumption with no geniune will to make our refineries work again at 100% capacity.

Is it a deliberate effort by people in government not to make refineries work or the oil marketers sabotage or is it a curse?

Dangote refinery under construction can not supply our domestic needs alone. Failure of governments is really killing Nigeria or maybe I am wrong. Please share more light.
Sad to say but colonialism still exhibits potent vestibules of power. Stealthily hidden from view. This one oil company below has more power, assets, and influence than many nations around the entire globe. And a former NNPC oil minister was once in their employ, and is now enjoying her loot and three passports. Correction, make that two, she no go return to Naija.

NPA terminates boat contract handled by Atiku’s Intels

September 3, 2020 Oladeinde Olawoyin

The management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has terminated a boat operation contract being handled by Intels Nigeria Limited, INL.

In a marine information notice dated September 1, the Lagos Pilotage District (LPD) of the NPA said the service, hitherto handled by Intels, has been terminated.

The notice, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, was signed by Daniel Hosea, Harbour Master of the LPD.

According to the notice, the LPD directed all service boats owners and operators to do transactions directly in each of the Port Complex of the NPA.

“Every Service Boat movement must be reported and booked at the office of the Harbour Master of the District, where Pilotage Chits and Master Declaration Forms will be issued and returned after every movement,” the notice said.

“Every enquiry on Service Boat movement should be directed to the office of the Port Manager of the Ports/Harbour Master, Pilotage District.”

Unending disagreements
The NPA and Intels have a long history of media face-off and disagreements.

In June 2017, PREMIUM TIMES exclusively reported how the Nigerian government moved against Intels, partly owned by former Nigerian vice-president, Atiku Abubakar.

The company was founded over three decades ago by Gabriele Volpi, an Italian national who also has Nigerian citizenship, and Mr Abubakar.

Earlier in April of that year, President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the recommendations of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, breaking the near-monopoly of Mr Atiku’s Intels in the handling of oil and gas cargoes in the country.

On September 27, 2017, Mr. Malami wrote to the Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala-Usman, directing her to terminate the boats pilotage monitoring and supervision agreement that the agency had with Intels, saying that the contract was illegal.

Mr Malami argued that the agreement which had allowed Intels to receive revenue on behalf of NPA for 17 years, was in contravention of the Nigerian Constitution, especially in view of the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy of government.

Not done, the NPA terminated the Pilotage Agency Agreement with Intels, several months after both parties had disagreements over the company’s operations in Nigerian ports.

In its reaction at the time, Intels kicked against the termination of the agreement describing the action as “preposterous” and highly injurious to Nigeria.

The company claimed that NPA ended the contract without inviting it as the other party to the agreement for negotiation.

Last year, Intels said it is not indebted to the NPA but said rather, the authority owes it more than$750 million.

The company noted that while it is open to an amicable resolution of the contract dispute with NPA, it was willing to proceed in all appropriate directions to protect its interests and employees.

The new development may signal the beginning of yet another disagreement between the NPA and the company.

Already, PREMIUM TIMES gathered Thursday night that Intels is claiming that it was schemed out of the service boat arrangement.

But a source said that the service boat contract has expired and the NPA is seeking to change the way it is being handled.

According to the source, the NPA wants to allow for competitive bidding and Intels too can apply in the new arrangement.

When contacted for details of the new development Thursday, Adams Jatto, NPA’s spokesperson, said he is on leave and cannot comment

Federal Borrowing Amid Pandemic Puts U.S. Debt on Path to Exceed World War II
Federal debt, as a share of the economy, hit 98 percent in the 2020 fiscal year. Many economists are pushing lawmakers to add even more to it.

Sept. 2, 2020

WASHINGTON — A surge in government borrowing in the face of the pandemic recession has put the United States in a position it has not seen since World War II: In order to pay off its national debt this year, the country would need to spend an amount nearly as large as its entire annual economy.

And still, economists and many fiscal hawks are urging lawmakers to borrow even more to fuel the nation’s economic recovery.

The amount of U.S. government debt has grown to nearly outpace the size of the nation’s economy in the 2020 fiscal year and is set to exceed it next year, as the virus downturn saps tax revenues, spurs government spending and necessitates record amounts of federal borrowing, the Congressional Budget Office said on Wednesday. Federal debt, as a share of the economy, is now on track to smash America’s World War II-era record by 2023.

The budget office report underscored the scrambled politics of deficits in 2020: It showed debt held by the public climbing to 98 percent of the size of the economy for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. Forecasters had previously expected the nation to reach those levels at the end of the decade, a time frame that had already alarmed fiscal hawks in Washington, who warned ballooning deficits would consume federal budgets and chill private investment.

But the virus has upended those predictions, prompting even longtime champions of fiscal prudence to urge lawmakers on Wednesday to keep borrowing more for the time being, in order to help people and businesses survive the lingering pain of a sharp recession and now-slowing recovery.

“We should think and worry about the deficit an awful lot, and we should proceed to make it larger,” said Maya MacGuineas, the president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget in Washington, which has for years pushed lawmakers to take steps to reduce deficits and debt.

The turnabout on deficit fears caps several years of declining concern over Washington spending more than it takes in, particularly among Republicans. Lawmakers voted along party lines in 2017 to pass a $1.5 trillion tax cut that President Trump and Republican leaders insisted would pay for itself but has instead added to the deficit. The budget deficit surpassed $1 trillion in 2019 — before the coronavirus pandemic hit — a jump of 17 percent from 2018 as tax cuts and spending increases continued to force heavy government borrowing.

The pandemic has plunged the economy into its sharpest quarterly contraction in growth in nearly 75 years, ballooning the deficit in the process. With millions out of work and businesses shuttered, tax revenues have fallen for the federal government, along with states and municipalities.

Congress and Mr. Trump moved quickly to approve more than $3 trillion in new federal spending to help businesses and individuals stay afloat through the abrupt slowdown in economic activity. All of those factors necessitated large sums of government borrowing, sending deficits — which had grown steadily even in the middle of a record economic expansion — skyward.

The deficit — the difference between what the United States spends and what it earns through taxes and other revenue — is expected to reach $3.3 trillion for fiscal year 2020, the budget office said on Wednesday. That is more than triple the level it reached in the 2019 fiscal year.

That financial gap is exacerbated by additional borrowing over the past decades. At the end of the fiscal year, the budget office predicts, total debt held by the public will be about $20.3 trillion. By comparison, the total output of the American economy — its gross domestic product — is projected to be just over $20.6 trillion for the fiscal year.

Economic theory has long held that rising debt as a share of the economy would drive up the amount of money governments must pay in interest to borrowers. Like a household with a lot of loans, the theory went, creditors would demand higher interest rates to hand cash to a heavily indebted borrower. With its debt payments more expensive, the household — or government — would have to borrow even more to stay current on its obligations.

That would result in a debt spiral in which the government was not able to do anything but fund its debt, the economists said, though such a spiral did not materialize over the past decade, as debt climbed and interest rates stayed low.

Because the pandemic hit the economy so quickly and painfully this year, lawmakers raced to borrow money much faster than they did during the last recession, when it took two years for the debt ratio to climb by a similar amount, in percentage-point terms: Debt as a percent of gross domestic product grew from 39 percent at the end of the 2008 fiscal year to nearly 61 percent at the end of 2010.

But it has been decades since the amount of federal debt was larger than the sum of the nation’s annual economic output. That came in 1946, shortly after the war ended.

The fiscal woes are not just confined to the United States’ need to borrow. In a separate report released on Wednesday afternoon, the budget office updated its forecasts for the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund, showing it will run out of money faster than the office previously forecast in June.

The new estimates imply the fund will be exhausted by 2031, a year earlier than previously projected, forcing immediate benefit cuts, unless lawmakers intervene. Medicare’s hospital insurance trust fund is now on track to run out of money in 2024, instead of 2026.

The aggressive federal response to the pandemic in March resulted in trillions of dollars in additional government spending, as Washington looked to provide tax breaks, assistance for small and large businesses, direct checks for low- and middle-income individuals and supplemental benefits for the unemployed.

Those measures were widely supported, as millions of workers were suddenly unemployed and businesses were forced to close their doors. Most economists have continued to call for additional spending, as the pandemic shows no sign of abating.

Loretta Mester, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, who has warned about previous deficits, told reporters on Wednesday that her own forecasts for the economic recovery hinge in part on continued fiscal support, and that without it, the United States might struggle to make it through shutdowns and onto a sustained growth path.

While Ms. Mester said that she was “not one of those people who think that deficits don’t matter,” the United States cannot worry about loading up on debt in the middle of a nascent recovery.

“This isn’t the right time to have that conversation,” she said.

In a sign of how unconcerned investors are about the deficit, stocks rose on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 rising 1.5 percent to set another record. It was the index’s best day since July 6.

Republican lawmakers who were little troubled by the increase have since cited debt concerns as a reason to move slowly on a new package of economic assistance amid the pandemic. Democratic leaders in the House drafted and passed a $3 trillion opening bid for a new rescue package this week, but they pared it back and dropped some members’ top priorities from the bill out of deficit concerns.

Yet while Mr. Trump, as a candidate in 2016, famously pledged to pay off the entire national debt in eight years, he and his fellow speakers during this year’s Republican National Convention did not raise the deficit issue at all. Mr. Trump’s most recent budget proposal, offered before the pandemic spread rapidly in the United States, did not include a balanced budget even if he were to win re-election.

For decades, analysts argued that an explosion of government borrowing risked devouring a large part of the nation’s savings, leaving less cash available for private businesses to use for investment.

Those companies would then be forced to pay higher interest rates to gain access to that smaller pool of funds. And those higher borrowing costs, it was argued, would curtail investment and hurt economic growth. The process is known as “crowding out,” and there is no sign that it is happening now. Interest rates remain low and inflation is muted.

“We’re in an era where more government debt is not doing so much crowding out,” said Douglas Elmendorf, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and the current dean of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“I think the idea that we should not let the debt constrain our response to the pandemic is exactly right,” he said. “But I think the idea that it never matters how much debt you have, because there’s always some way around that, is wrong.”

Even some fiscal hawks, like Ms. MacGuineas and Michael A. Peterson, the chief executive of the debt-focused Peterson Foundation, say lawmakers should continue to spend for now, while targeting their efforts more effectively to help the economy recover. Eventually, they say, that spending will need to yield to debt reduction.

“When this devastating pandemic is behind us,” Mr. Peterson said, “our leaders must come together to address our growing debt so the next generation can have better preparedness and greater prosperity.”

Trump Suspends Aid to Ethiopia Over Nile River Dam Dispute

The U.S. suspended aid to Ethiopia over its decision to fill a hydropower dam on a tributary of the Nile River before agreeing with Egypt and Sudan on how the reservoir will be managed.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has posed a challenge to the U.S. as it’s tried to balance the demands of two major African allies and takes steps toward restoring relations with a fledgling democratic Sudan. Withholding aid to Ethiopia signals U.S. backing for Egypt, also an important Middle East partner, in the dispute.

African Union-brokered talks have so far failed to resolve the impasse and the Trump administration is increasingly concerned about their lack of progress, said a State Department official who asked not to be identified because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Egypt, which depends on the Nile River for most of its fresh-water needs, is opposed to any development it says will impact the flow downstream -- a position echoed by Sudan. Ethiopia is developing a 6,000-megawatt power plant at the dam, and has asserted a right to use the resource for its development.

“Ethiopia will not be deterred from finishing GERD by U.S. aid cuts and nor will it change its negotiating stance,” said William Davison, the International Crisis Group’s senior analyst for Ethiopia. “Any U.S. attempt to pressurize Ethiopia in this manner will stiffen the government’s resolve to not make any concessions that Ethiopia believes will reduce the benefits” of the dam, he said.

Islamist Extremists
By cutting aid, the U.S. also risks weakening cooperation with Ethiopia in its fight against Islamist extremists in the Horn of Africa region, said Nima Khorrami, an analyst at the Washington, D.C.-based Arctic Institute.

“It is a huge strategic mistake,” said Khorrami. “Halting aid will not only prove that U.S. is not a neutral mediator, but it could very well push Addis Ababa closer to both China and Turkey.”

The cut in U.S. aid could amount to about $130 million and affect security, counter-terrorism and anti-human trafficking programs, Foreign Policy reported Aug. 28. The country received about $881 million of U.S. aid last year, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Fitsum Arega, the Ethiopian ambassador to the U.S., confirmed the suspension after asking the State Department for clarity.

“We understand that the issue is Temporary Pause,” he said in a Twitter post. “The dam is ours! We will finish it together! With our efforts, our Ethiopia will shine!”

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office declined to comment on Wednesday.

The U.S. brought the countries together in November to negotiate an agreement, after previous attempts failed. Ethiopia walked away from the talks and called for the African Union to moderate the dispute. Those discussions are still ongoing.

The three African nations failed to break the deadlock in negotiations last week, Sudanese Irrigation Minister Yasser Abas said. Talks are expected to resume on Sept. 14, according to a statement from the Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy.

A Minneapolis man has been arrested after shooting dead his wife, dumping her body in their garage then opening fire on two sisters next door, wounding one while she shielded her 18-month-old niece from the gunfire.

Jason Michael Mesich killed his wife Angela Lynn then put her body in the garage of their home in Minneapolis at 11pm on Sunday.

According to police, they'd had an argument about not having enough sex. He then opened fire on neighbors Canisha and Makayla Saulter, who were loading up a U-Haul van with other members of their family.

Makayla, 12, was holding 29-year-old Canisha's 18-month-old daughter at the time.

She shielded the girl from the gunfire but was shot in the head and is now in the hospital in a critical condition.

Canisha was shot multiple times from the waist down. She is in the hospital in a serious but stable condition. The other members of their family drove them to the hospital and called police on Mesich.

When authorities arrived, they engaged in a standoff with the man. He fired 40 shots before being arrested.

Mesich told police that he and his wife had been arguing in the garage of their home. He then went to retrieve a weapon from inside the house and returned.

When he got back, he said his wife hit him. He punched her in the collar bone, he said, then she 'told him' to shoot her so he did.

He told police he 'emptied' the gun.

When asked why he'd shot the girls next door, he said he 'hates all children' and that they 'weren't good neighbors'.

The Saulter family say 12-year-old Makayla is a 'hero' for protecting her niece, Winter, from the hail of bullets.

Her family is now raising money for her medical care on GoFundMe page found here. They have raised $46,000 of their $50,000 target.

In the description, they say: 'She was shot somewhere in the back of the head. During a CT Scan they found her skull had been fractured, and have removed a piece of her skull to allow room for it to swell.

'She is currently on a respirator, with a tube near her forehead to allow the blood to drain.

'It is unknown how long she will be in the hospital or if she will ever fully recover. The doctors predict she will have a long road to recovery.

'She will be in the hospital for at least 2-3 months with the piece of her skull removed, then even longer once it is put back in place, then she will be going to Gillette Children's Hospital after that.'

Mesich is in custody on murder and attempted murder charges.

Male suicide rate hits two-decade high in England and Wales

Rate of 16.9 deaths per 100,000 in 2019 was highest since 2000, ONS data shows

Patrick Butler and agency

Tue 1 Sep 2020 12.29 EDT

The suicide rate for men in England and Wales in 2019 was the highest for two decades, official figures show.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), published on Tuesday, found there were 5,691 suicides registered, with an age-standardised rate of 11 deaths per 100,000 population.

The England and Wales male suicide rate of 16.9 deaths per 100,000 was the highest since 2000 but remained in the line with the 2018 rate. The rate for women was 5.3 deaths per 100,000, the highest since 2004.

Samaritans pointed to “worrying trends”, including men aged 45-49 remaining at the highest risk of suicide, and an increase in suicide rates among young people, especially women under 25. An increase in suicide rates among people aged 25 to 44 in recent years continued in 2019.

“With the impact of the pandemic this year taking a huge toll on people’s mental wellbeing, we should be even more concerned,” said the charity’s chief executive, Ruth Sutherland.

Although there was no guarantee the impact of Covid-19 would lead to higher suicide rates, Samaritans said its research, based on calls to its helpline, found the pandemic had exacerbated known risk factors for people already vulnerable.

“Volunteers are telling us that many callers have been worried about losing their job and/or business and their finances, with common themes around not being able to pay rent/mortgage, inability to support the family, and fear of homelessness.”

Vicki Nash, the head of policy and campaigns at the charity Mind, said: “Not all suicides are mental health-related but many are, and we know that a significant proportion of people who take their own lives have asked for support for their mental health within the last 12 months, which means that services are failing people when they need help the most.

“With more and more people seeking support for their mental health, it is absolutely crucial that services are equipped to meet the demand. No one in touch with services, asking for help, should reach the point of taking their own life.”

Among men, the area with the highest rate was Yorkshire and the Humber at 20.6 per 100,000, followed by the south-west at 19.4. London recorded the lowest rate with 11.8.

The area with the highest female suicide rate was also Yorkshire and the Humber at 7.3 per 100,000, while the north-east had the lowest rate among women at 4.1.

The male suicide rate in the south-east increased from 13.5 per 100,000 (526 deaths) in 2018 to 16.8 per 100,000 (657 deaths) in 2019.

The ONS said: “Higher rates of suicide among middle-aged men in recent years might be because this group is more likely to be affected by economic adversity, alcoholism and isolation. It could also be that this group is less inclined to seek help.”

Provisional data, also published by the ONS, showed there were 6.9 suicide deaths per 100,000 people in England between April and June, during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. This was the equivalent of 845 registered deaths, the lowest of any quarter since 2001, the ONS added.

But the ONS said the low number of suicide deaths registered during this period was probably because inquests were delayed because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

“The lower number of deaths registered caused by suicide in quarter two of 2020 should be interpreted with caution; this likely reflects delays to inquests because of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on the coroner’s service. All deaths caused by suicide in England are investigated by coroners,” it said.

“Given the length of time it takes to hold an inquest (around five months), we do not currently know the total number of suicides that occurred during the coronavirus pandemic.”

Poorer middle-aged men most at risk from suicide in pandemic, say Samaritans

Sutherland added: “Undoubtedly, the pandemic has affected everyone in society, but Samaritans is particularly worried about three groups: people with pre-existing mental health conditions, young people who self-harm, and less well-off middle-aged men.

“It is essential that these groups are given the support they need before people reach crisis point. Suicide prevention must be a priority right now, so we can save lives.”

In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org or jo@samaritans.ie. In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is 13 11 14. Other international helplines can be found at www.befrienders.org.

does the way Trump talks or tweet sound like someone that gives a rat's ass of what people think?
He probably gave Mike Tyson audio support. I don't recall him assembling a top legal team of lawyers to help keep Tyson out of prison. Plus Mike was running wild at the time, trying to f*ck every big booty female with a pulse. Divorced twice just like 45. He needed that time in prison to grow.

As far as Mayweather. He said in so many words f*ck Africa. A coon extraordinaire. He hasn't changed or grown. And don't forget, one of his ex girlfriends aborted his twin seeds that were her in her stomach, left him, and returned all the material gifts. She wanted absolutely nothing to do with him.

We are evangelical Christians not voting for Donald Trump this time

BY RYAN HURLBURT AND KATHARINE HURLBURT, OPINION CONTRIBUTORS — 08/31/20 12:00 PM EDT

THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY CONTRIBUTORS ARE THEIR OWN AND NOT THE VIEW OF THE HILL

It is no secret that most white evangelical Christians in the country voted for Donald Trump in 2016. But one recent survey finds that, if the election were tomorrow, his margin of victory with white evangelical voters would be just 38 points, dramatically down from his advantage of 61 points over Hillary Clinton. Evangelical voters are having second thoughts.

We are a white evangelical married couple living in Georgia. We have both worked on evangelical missions across various cultural contexts, and are absolutely committed to upholding the dignity and value of all human life, including those who are not yet born. But having witnessed the negative effects that the administration has had on vulnerable people, particularly refugees and other immigrants, we are among the significant number of evangelical Christians who will not vote for the president again.

Our critical values have not changed since 2016. We were uncomfortable back then with the credible reports of his marital infidelities, his bullying tone, and disparaging comments on immigrants. But we also were, and certainly still are, deeply committed to protecting the lives of children in the womb and the freedom to practice our faith without interference. We felt that we had chosen the lesser of two evils when we voted.

While the president has delivered on some issues of concern to us, such as economic reforms and trade deals, his immigration policies are cruel, undermining his pledges to life and religious freedom. For instance, while we cherish unborn lives, we also value the lives of thousands of children who were separated from their mothers or fathers by the “zero tolerance” policies of the administration at the Mexican border in 2018.

Our commitment to life also compels us to do everything that we can to end human trafficking. The administration has decided to suspend the life saving elements of the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, the passage of which evangelical Christians proudly championed under George Bush and the flouting of which evangelical ministries like World Vision and International Justice Mission have decried.

Our convictions on life also are why we strongly believe the United States should continue to be, in the famous words of George Washington, “a safe and agreeable asylum to the virtuous and persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong.” Rather than continue the life saving tradition of asylum and resettlement of refugees, the administration has shut out persecuted refugees with its immigration policies.

Denying asylum to those fleeing persecution is not a commitment to life. Since many are fleeing persecution on account of their faith, it undercuts the pledge of the president on religious freedom. As the alarming findings from evangelical ministries Open Doors and World Relief note, the number of refugees from countries where Christians face the most persecution is on track for a decline of 90 percent this year versus 2016.

This is not what the president promised to evangelical voters. During his first week in office, he criticized the previous administration for admitting too few Syrian refugees and promised to assist them. But then, just hours after he made that pledge, he signed an executive order that dramatically restricted the number of refugees to enter the United States, including an indefinite ban on all Syrian refugees. Indeed, fewer Syrian Christians have been resettled in the almost four years of the current administration than in the last year that Barack Obama was in office alone.

With these harsh policies, the president has lost our votes. That does not necessarily mean we will vote for Joe Biden, but our consciences will not allow us to vote for Trump again. We believe he could change his mind. He could set the refugee ceiling at the historical normal of 95,000. He could restore the asylum program. He could also work with Congress to pass the immigration reforms based on restitution, advocated by a broad range of evangelical Christians, that would create a new legal pathway to eventual citizenship, which Bush and Obama tried but failed to do.

We know it might take a miracle for the president to reverse course on his immigration policies at this point. But unless he does so, he will forfeit our votes and, as the polls suggest, many others as well.

Ryan Hurlburt and Katharine Hurlburt are voters who are based in Georgia.

Trump losing military support in election: poll

AFP
MANDEL NGAN ,AFP•August 31, 2020

Just 37.4 percent of active personnel in the US military support President Donald Trump's re-election, while 43.1 percent back his Democratic opponent Joe Biden, according to a new poll Monday.

The poll by the Military Times and the Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that half of servicemen and women have an unfavorable view of Trump, and 42 percent strongly disapprove of him, compared to 38 percent with a favorable view of the Republican leader.

Support for Trump fell from the previous poll in December 2019, when he had a 42 percent favorable rating.

The poll of 1,018 people was taken before the recent Democratic and Republican party national conventions, in which the parties laid out the cases for supporting their candidate.

The poll was weighted more to career members of the military rather than younger, junior enlisted personnel, the Military Times noted, so is not a complete snapshot of what the entire US military thinks.

Trump has boasted of strong support among the military and has touted his increase in funding for the Pentagon's budget.

But that record is clouded by frequent disputes with the Pentagon's leadership, including popular defense secretary Jim Mattis, who resigned in December 2018, and policy conflicts with the current secretary, Mark Esper, and Joint Chiefs Chair General Mark Milley.

Discord between US President Donald Trump (L) and Defense Secretary Mark Esper may contribute to his relatively low level of electoral support in a new poll of the US military

75% of CFOs now predict Joe Biden will win the election: Global CFO Council survey - Chief Financial Officers

CNBC's Frank Holland reports on the CNBC Global CFO Council Survey results that show how some executives view Joe Biden's potential impact on the U.S. economy. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi

According to the most recent CNBC/Change Research Poll, fear over coronavirus has fallen in several key six swing states while at the same time President Donald Trump’s approval rating has seen an uptick. In Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Trump now has an approval rating of 48%, two weeks ago his approval was at 46%.

Despite an uptick in his job approval rating, President Trump is still trailing his Democratic presidential opponent Joe Biden. According to Nate Silver’s FiveThirtEight, Biden is currently favored to win the election — a 70 in 100 chance. Those numbers are in line with some of the world’s top business leaders. Seventy-five percent of the CNBC Global CFO Council say Joe Biden will win the U.S. Presidential election in November, according to the latest quarterly survey of members released on Friday. That same number holds true for North American-based members.

The CNBC Global CFO Council represents some of the largest public and private companies in the world, collectively managing more than $5 trillion in market value across a wide variety of sectors. The Q3 2020 survey was conducted between Aug. 7 and Aug. 22. among 40 global members of the council.

Outside of the Presidential horse race, 63% of North American respondents believe that neither the Senate or the House will flip, while 25% believe the Democrats will take back the Senate and 6% believe the Republicans will take back the House.

Global recession and the election

A struggling economy typically puts incumbent presidents at a disadvantage but this election cycle is taking place in a relatively rare economic time as it will be only the third to take place during a formal recession since World War II. The previous two recession time elections were in 1948 when Harry Truman won reelection, and in 1980 when Jimmy Carter lost reelection.

Trump faces a true uphill battle when it comes to the election in the midst of this particular recession. That’s because this one is projected to be the worst since World War II with the global economy shrinking by 5.2% and the U.S. by 6.1% this year, according to the the World Bank.

CFOs are anticipating a similar downturn in the global economy. Respondents said on average that 7 out of 11 global regions were in decline, the rest were stable. More than 62% said that the pandemic is the greatest external risk factor facing their business while 80% of respondents say the coronavirus will have a negative impact on their business. Only 7.5% percent say it will have a positive effect.

The impact of Covid-19 is the obvious leading factor as to why corporations are deciding to slash jobs. More than half of respondents say they will be decreasing the number of employees over the next 12 months; just under 32% of North America respondents anticipate a reduction in their workforce.

Is post-nut clarity an actual scientific thing? If it is, how does it work?

Yes it is a thing, and it has to do with blood and oxygen.

The penis and vagina, when you’re aroused, engorge with blood, oxygenating the sexual organs. In men it is what allows for an erection. This blood is taken away from the brain while at the same time during sex the brain is flooded with endorphins, adrenaline, and serotonin. This heightens the sexual experience. The same is true in women but the effects can last much longer and multiple orgasims are possible for both men and women although more likely for women.

Once you ejaculate arousal quickly subsides and the blood rushes back to the brain and dumping a ton of oxygen. The endorphins are the first things to subside in the brain leaving adrenaline. This puts the body into an active response state not unlike flight or fight mode. Thus post-nut clarity.

This is an evolutionary trait, especially in men, that goes back over a million years when we were still the prey. Sex was dangerous, it put the couple in a vulnerable state. Once sexual congress is completed the male needed to be alert for any predators almost immediately so as to defend their now hopefully pregnant partner. In almost every mammal this state of post coitus alertness is found.

Coke will offer buyouts to 4,000 workers in the US and Canada

By Alicia Wallace, CNN Business

Updated 10:09 AM ET, Fri August 28, 2020

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/28/business/coke-layoffs-restructuring/index.html

San Francisco (CNN Business)Coca-Cola (KO) will cut thousands of jobs and reduce its number of business units as it faces declining beverage sales in the pandemic.

Coke said Friday the job cuts would come in the form of voluntary and involuntary reductions. It plans to first offer buyouts to 4,000 employees in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico and then offer a similar voluntary program in other countries. The number of people who take the buyout will reduce the number of involuntary layoffs, the company said.
Coke did not say how many jobs could be lost in total, but said global severance expenses could range from $350 million to $550 million.

As of Dec. 31, 2019, Coke had 86,200 employees, of which approximately 10,100 were located in the United States.
The company said it plans to reduce its number of operating units from their current total of 17 businesses in four geographies to nine operating units in those regions. Coke is focusing on its most popular segments that include its main Coca-Cola line and products like sports drinks, coffees and teas. It also wants to expand in growing categories such as sparkling water and plant-based drinks.
Meanwhile, it has outlined plans to to kill more "zombie brands," or those that aren't growing. For instance, the company discontinued its Odwalla smoothie brand in July.
In Coca-Cola's second quarter, which ended on June 26, the company saw sales drop 28% to $7.2 billion.
